A Fantastic Introduction!
I first discovered this book when I was doing some research for a paper in my graduate Italian Renaissance class. This book was not a source that I was able to site much, but since I come from a Baptist background I was very unfamiliar with the Church Councils. This book does an excellent job of succinctly (only 119 pages) sumerizing 1700 years of conciliar history. For someone who was entirely unfamiliar with the subject this was essential.

What was invaluable for my research was the Bibliography! This was the jumping off point of my research and saved me many hours in the library.

This book however is not just for the non-catholic who is unfamilliar with the church councils. I found that just this short book gave me a better basic understanding of the church councils than the average lay Catholic.

I have recently reread this book due to appologetic conversations. Most christian faiths would be well suited to have an understanding of conciliar history since their faith either clings to, protests or denies the authority of the church councils.

Everyone at all levels of organization needs this NOW !!
This book is a profound work for those of us trying to create a new work environment which embraces collaboration and a new kind of deep participation at all levels in the organization. The people at the top no longer have all the answers, at many times they have none of the answers. The authors give us a new way to look at how we participate in the workplace and suggest practical, workable ways to explore our own actions and understand the interactions we see going on around us. This book gives a badly needed message to all of us and offers excellent workable approaches to practice. If you want to build a collaborative workplace, then here is one clear, thoughtful, and sensitive path to get there. Every person in every organization should read this and practice it's suggestions over and over and over. Eric B. Hert

Deserves TEN stars
As a member of a group of folks currently planning an intentional community, I can testify to the fact that a million and one totally unexpected questions (not to mention the expected ones!) leap up to bewilder anyone thinking about creating an alternative living experiment. There are philosophical questions--what do we stand for (not just what are we against)? what's our vision?--and there are the nitty-gritty questions that have to do with land ownership, trusts, zoning permits, nonprofit status, and so on. Until you're actually in the process, you have no idea of how complicated the creation of an intentional community can be. No wonder fewer than 10% of planned communities actually get off the ground!

That's why Diana Leafe Christian's book is so invaluable. Written by someone who's been part of the intentional community movement for years, and a member of an ecovillage, "Creating a Life Together" could easily be subtitled "everything you always wanted to know about forming an intentional community but were afraid to ask." Especially valuable is its discussion of composing vision statements, thinking through what kind of land is right for your group, dealing with bankers who are likely to be wary of intentional living in the first place, and different strategies for conducting initial meetings and making group decisions--you'd be surprised how foreign consensus-style decision-making is to most of us.

A growing number of folks are searching for meaningful, peaceful, self-sufficient, and eco-friendly lifestyles-in- community that offer alternatives to the consumer-driven world. But building these communities is hard and sometimes perplexing work. Take all the help and advice you can get-and Christian's book is at the top of the list.

"E pluribus unum"...and Vice Versa
This is one of the volumes which comprise the University of Michigan Business School Management Series. According to Paul H. O'Neill in the Foreword, this book "captures the leading-edge theory and practice on how to leverage diversity for the benefit of individuals and the organizations in which they work." It does indeed. Cox organizes his excellent material within seven chapters:

1. The Challenge of Managing Diversity

2. for Meeting the Challenge

3. leadership: The First Requirement of Change

4. Leverage Research, Develop Measurement Plans

5. Create Effective Education

6. Align Organizational Systems and Practices

7. Follow Up for Sustainable Results A Strategy

As you can see, Cox presents the material within a logical sequence inorder to achieve several specific objectives: to offer a systematic, comprehensive model for change as well as to provide data on the results of using that method; to include detailed examples to illustrate all of his main ideas; to include, also, an integrated case study on managing diversity efforts in one of the world's largest companies Alcoa, Inc.); meanwhile, to integrate relevant research with chapter endnotes; and finally, to raise questions in each chapter for discussion and further learning. He fully achieves all of these objectives.

Cox defines diversity as "the variation of social and cultural identities among people existing together in a defined employment or market setting." Many of the largest organizations have operations located throughout the world. They are by nature "multicultural." Other, probably smaller organizations are now involved in globalization initiatives and have become (or will soon become) "multicultural." Still other organizations, perhaps even smaller, may not be (according to Cox's definition) "multicultural" but they do business with organizations which are; it is in their best interests to have a strategy (or combination of strategies) to capture, manage, and then sustain what Cox calls "the power of diversity." I strongly urge decision-makers in all of these organizations to read Cox's book because all of the subjects, covered so well in logical sequence, can also serve as agenda items during the strategic planning process.

One of the book's greatest value-added benefits consists of various "Tables" and clusters of bullet points which Cox includes within a fast-paced but comprehensive narrative. For example, Table 3.1 (in Chapter 1) which provides seven examples of strong leadership behavior or Table 6.1 (in Chapter 6) which lists "primary climate factors" to be aligned with diversity. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out the other volumes in the series. With regard to other relevant resources which readers may need for additional study of this important subject, Cox includes a number of excellent recommendations within the "Notes" section.
