A modern technical analysis tool
I've been trading for a while now with a few different forecast signals that I receive in my email everyday and decided to move on to some software where I can do the forecasting myself. The professional nostradamus forex trader has given me a very good overview of the Nostradamus system and I think Nostradamus is a great tool once you know how to use it effectively. Just a warning to everybody - the material is only about Nostradamus and not about other forex subjects but gives you a good understanding of what you can do once you're know this forecasting system very good!

I will recommend this as a quick reference to the different instruments in the Nostradamus system.

Real Options in Capital Investment

Advanced theoretical real options applications
The editor of this book, Lenos Trigeorgis, earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University, and has since that published several articles in distinguished journals on one of his favourite research subjects - real options. By using basic option pricing principles in capital investments, a practicing manager as well as an academic can develop financial models that handle stochastic information, for instance oil prices. The capital investment theories explained in this book is the greatest breakthrough in capital investments since the 60's. The widely accepted DCF-method should partly be replaced by Option Pricing Models, OPM, as this is the first method that can handle volatility and uncertainty in a theoretically consistent way. Several academics are finding this difficult to accept - the old "truth" doesn't hold is a volatile environment! If you believe in Discounted Cash Flow analysis - you MUST read this book! If you want to stay ahead of your competitors, you SHOULD read THIS comprehensive book on capital investments! It may require a lot more maths that any other books on the subject, as the book is rather theoretical with several real life examples. Most of the 20 authors have a background in maths as well as economics, something preferrable but not necessary for the reader of this excellent book. The book could be recommended for MBA and PhD students. Niklas Uddstrom (niklas.uddstrom@mandatum.fi)

Very useful and eclectic
This collection of essays is practical and wide-ranging. The editors have assembled essays from academics who study law, politics, public health, and economics. The information is reliable and current. The charts are easy to understand. The writing is almost always clear, but arguments and analyses will challenge newcomers and provoke old hands.

Essays concern the regulation of tobacco by means of international and domestic politics, taxes, marketing, and litigation, as well as efforts to reduce injuries to smokers and availability to youths. Every essay complements the whole. Each chapter features at least some history to summarize the performance of policies to date. The index will expedite use of the book as for building bibliographies, as will the abundant references and footnotes.

I award only four stars because some of the chapters go too far and some not far enough. Dr. Jack Slade calls the marketing of tobacco "peculiar" despite the fact that the appeal of tobacco companies to freedom of choice is a position accepted by 75-80% of Americans, to the best of my information. Dr. Robert Kagan and his co-author conclude on page 32 that "On balance, contemporary U. S. tobacco policy seems to reflect American public opinion much more than it does the preference set of either the tobacco industry, public health activists, or antitobacco lawyers." Try writing that "duh!" conclusion in a term paper and see what grade you get when the teacher stops guffawing. Not only is that contention so obvious as to be risable, but it also misleads. Even if tobacco companies have not gotten all that they wanted, they have made billions by addicting young people to known carcinogens. Policy may long have reflected tobacco power far more than public health activism or litigation, ya think?

Still, this is a terrific resource.

There is about a 30 page appendix of useful websites. The Samson Option
Published in Hardcover by Random House (October, 1991)
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

An enlightened look at Israeli nuclear development.
The Samson Option is an in-depth look at a truly fascinating and shadowy facet of Israeli history. The book makes clear the diffuculties of fully developing nuclear capability in respect to Israel's tenuous and (often) isolated political and scientific position. Additionally, The Option uncovers the myriad covert (and world-wide) operations/contacts/political maneuvers employed by the Israelis in their quest for the bomb. The book also slightly examines Israeli moves within the political arena once the bomb had been successfully developed/deployed. The only slight I have against the book is that it fails to significantly account for the results of Israel's missile/warhead development programs, which it describes in such detail. One must therefore go to other sources for the desired information. All in all, the Samson Option is excellent reading for those curious about the nuclear goings-on over the past decades within the borders of our diminutive Mideastern ally.

It is Time to Reconsider the Militarization of Space?
With the Cold War over in the mid-1990s, and growing commercial use of space by the United States and other countries, many people in the the U.S. military believed that the role of space operations in the national defense arena needed to be reevaluated. Taking this as their rationale for pursuing this study, the authors outline the shifts in expected military operations in a post-Cold War world, and provide three options for the future military use of space. A "minimalist" option would have the military rely on partnerships with other government agencies and commercial resources to serve the military. Relying on assets in orbit for military uses operated by other organizations, therefore, would be a central activity in this option. An "enhanced" option would expand the military's use of space in a variety of areas, and integrate their operational components into the existing military organization of the United States. The third option would establish an "aerospace force" separate from the other military branches. While they might work jointly with other branches, these autonomous units would also be able to exercise power separately. The book does not provide a recommendation for any of the three options, choosing instead to characterize the strengths and weaknesses of each.

The Stasis Option

Something A Bit Different
A book worth reading. The Stasis Option seems to hark back to the early traditions of serious science-fiction, concerning itself with a social problem and its solution through technology. Unlike many scifi novels written in that vein, the author spends little time in "preaching", but instead lets his characters and the story speak for itself. The plotting, action, and dialogue remind me of Dashiell Hammett and Robert Heinlein, an odd combination, but immensely enjoyable anyway. The "heavier" more serious parts of the story are generously interladed with humour, some of it, I am sure, unintended. The motivations and thoughts of the two main characters are transparently examined in empathic detail, showing perhaps the author's own identification with these characters. As in any good scifi novel, there are non-human characters, one probably predictable, an awakening sentient computer, and the other, absolutely unpredictable, a sapient horse who thinks he's human. I recommend The Stasis Option to any reader who is jaded by the sometimes incomprehensibly verbose science-fiction fare of the past few years. This author has a knack of saying a lot with a few words and making his story genuinely entertaining.

good
Presents a number of monthly, weekly and a few daily chart setups. These are essentially just breakouts based on bar patterns with the occasional indicator for confirmation. In addition, there are backtested results for each of them that are eye boggling if true (75-90% win, 3 to 1 minimum). I figured there's considerable curve fitting and many hours of computer scanning to find profitable patterns. This isn't necessarily bad, and given as these patterns are all fairly long term.. few people would actually care to stomach the stops necessary to trade it. Interesting, nonetheless .. and again if these backtests are even 75% accurate, you are looking at some amazing setups.

Great rock reading
Option had an interesting history. Originally called OP, the magazine attempted to cover everyting, letter by letter, getting partly through the alphabet before giving up and re-inventing itself as an indie label: SubPop. At that point Becker took over and continued it as probably the most balanced indie rock magazine of its era.

the art of short selling by kathryn f. staley
the book is good overall. it gives you many detailed particular examples and is worth reading also because it gives you an idea which SEC forms to review to determine if a stock is worth buying or shorting. A bit weak on general guidelines though.
