A great summary of inner conflicts
While women have gone through SOME changes since this book was published in the early '70s, they (unfortunately) still wrestle with the conflicting expectations that this author describes clearly, insightfully, and succinctly. Every young woman should be made aware of the information in this book at an early age--whether through their own reading or through the caring explanations of parents and teachers.

Sequal to trading for a living
Very good book. I agree that the charts could have been better and more relevant to wha Elder was discussing in the text. His mental toughness section is excellent. Trading is a mental game, and a trader has to stay mentally tough or take a break. Mark Douglas's books are the best on this. Laurence Connors places a big emphasis on this too.

A Complete Introduction to Trading Essentials
I really enjoyed the first book by Dr Elder, "Trading for a Living" very much. I have just finished Dr Elder's new book, "Come Into My Trading Room" and have enjoyed it very much too. There are several new ideas in the new book. A lot of the material in this book was presented in "Trading for a Living". It is the best book that combined the 3Ms -- Mind, Method and Money Management -- required for successful traders. It expands on the methods presented in "Trading for a Living" and makes the triple screen concept very clear.

I think the great difference between this book and other trading books is Dr Elder's background as a psychiatrist. He provides valuable insights into understanding the human element of market behavior, and the individual trader that makes his work unique. Dr Elder shares his own, successful trading strategy in a clear, concise, and easy to understand style. He does a great job showing some of his successful trades. I'm sure this is one of the finest books on developing trading skills. It is not only fun and easy to read but it is profitable. It pays back.

An Excellent Follow-Up to Elder's Trading For A Living
Alexander Elder gained well-deserved prominence for his first book, Trading For a Living. It's one of my favorite books on trading. Out of this classic came such new indicators as the Force Index, which is one of the indicators I use regularly in my chart software. I read Elder's follow-up, Come Into My Trading Room, in hopes of learning additional insights of the Force Index. While I found some new information here, I was even more impressed by the following lessons Elder shared:

1) "Some of the best trading opportunities occur after false breakouts" - I'm finding this more and more these days, which is why I actively use my Momentum Divergence indicators to separate the fakeouts from the real breakouts. Elder does a great job showing numerous charts throughout his book, laying the groundwork for the divergence examples he explains in great depth when you step into his trading room in the final chapter with many actual trading examples. You need to understand the concept of divergence to trade today's markets more profitably, and this book will be a great help in showing you how to trade divergence setups.

2) Triple Screen - Elder explains the important of using multiple timeframes, though he advocates two to no more than three time frames. The key concept is that whatever timeframe you use, you need to go up to the next longer timeframe to get confirmation. This provides the bigger picture trend to define the nature of your trades, and then you can return to the shorter timeframe and make more tactical decisions with this broader trend in mind as well.

3) Grade Your Performance - Elder actually quantifies trading effectiveness by defining the width of the channel for a stock, and what percentage of the move the trader actually captured to determine his grade. Regardless of how a trader measures his performance, it must be tracked in order to make improvements and experience constant improvement.

4) The SafeZone Stop - While I have not tested this indicator in my systems yet, Elder's SafeZone Stop looks like a more effective way to place a trailing stop than standard moving averages. The SafeZone Stop appears to adjust more rapidly to trending versus flat periods for a stock, compared to moving averages. This new technique should easily be worth many times the price of this book by itself.

5) Chapter 9: Trading for a Living - This chapter was my most highlighted chapter, as Elder covers the stages of growth from beginning to professional trader, covering a wide range of topics on trading discipline, time management, organization and developing a viable trading plan, to highlight just a few.

All in all, Come Into My Trading Room is an excellent follow-up to Elder's Trading For A Living, and I think you'll also find it a quick and thought-provoking read.

Thank you Mr. Douglas
Anyone noticed that Mr. Douglas's detractors are NOT experienced traders? All I have to say is: THANK YOU 1000 TIMES MR DOUGLAS.

Written by a successful trader
To the previous reviewer -- It doesn't matter that Douglas is not a psychologist -- the book is about trading, and the mental processes involved in becoming a consistently successful trader. Since the early 1980s, Douglas has been, and still is, a successful trader -- not someone who makes his living writing books about trading -- as Mr. Kiev seems to do. Also, with regard to Mr. Kiev's book and the fact that he is a psychologist -- keep in mind -- Mr. Kiev is NOT a trader, never has been, so how could he write about being successful at something he has never accomplished himself??? But hey -- go ahead and buy Kiev's book -- if you need "degree" initials after an author's name to give a book validity. Myself -- I'll stick with a REAL trader's point of view and Douglas' books and talks -- he knows what he's talking about because he's been there in the trenches with us!

A MUST FOR SERIOUS TRADERS
It is apparent that Douglas exhaustively researched material for his book by talking and coaching other traders -- I see myself, and my fellow traders, in every chapter! It is great to know that even a successful trader like Douglas had problems in the beginning, like most of us, and learned how to overcome them. But more importantly, that he chose to share those ideas with the trading public. Thank you for your generosity!

Stock Options: An Authoritative Guide to Incentive and Nonqualified Stock Options (2nd edition)

If you're lucky enough to be granted employee stock options--and if the stock is actually worth something!--consider spending a little extra to purchase Robert Pastore's pricey primer on options. Stock options can be quite lucrative, but "while the intention of management and the board of directors is to motivate and reward people through stock options, the reality is that much of the potential wealth that could come from those options is wasted. Why? "The answer is simple," continues Pastore. "Options are complicated. If people maximize the value of their options, it's usually by luck ... blind luck." Thankfully, he writes with the layperson in mind, pinpointing ways to maximize earnings with textbook-like clarity. He explains the difference between incentive and nonqualified options, including charts showing how tax consequences vary, depending on exercise date. Pastore spends considerable time on tax issues, detailing the ramifications of long-term capital gains, alternative minimum tax (AMT), and disqualifying versus nondisqualifying dispositions of stock. Clear and thorough enough for both options newbies and tax professionals, Stock Options should help make blind luck less than necessary for success in the options process. --Rob McDonald

Helped me
This book helped me greatly with some stock options I got from my work. I had NSO stock and had not idea how the taxes worked out on it and when the best time was to exercise.
Well this book, I made a good decision and made $80,000 on my stock options.

A useful guide for analyzing tax treatment of stock options
I found the book to be a "must have" in my professional library. I use the book to reinforce discussions on the planning techniques and available tools for stock options. Most people have misconceptions on tax treatment of stock options. I recommend this book to anyone who holds stock options or who advises people who hold stock options.

Very timely book on a topic that is not well covered.
This is an excellent guide to understand the strategies and tax consequences surrounding stock optins. This book is a clear and concise guide on stock options. I recommend that you buy, read and understand this information in this book before you exercise your stock options.

I agree with the reviewer from San Mateo regarding Sept. 17
Isn't it really all so obvious that September 17th never even bothered to read this book?I've reread this book 4 times and never, repeat never saw anything where Wade Cook says that somebody made a million dollars in one day. Also, this is not just Wall Street Money Machine Vol. 1 on a "new cover", yes some parts are similiar, but there is also more informaion on rolling stocks, covered calls, stock splits which are NOT covered in Wall Street Money Machine Vol 1 PLUS new strategies not covered like naked puts and tandem plays and more.September 17th, try reading the book first before writing a review, better yet, try using the strategies and see for yourself how well they work. You'll be glad you did!

You'll want to add this one to your library
Wall Street Money Machine-Stock Market Miracles is an excellent companion to Wall Street Money Machine for the new millenium. It goes beyond WSMMFTNM and covers more information like selling puts and tandem plays. As for the advertisements, I think the bashers mean testimonials and whats wrong with listing success stories? I enjoyed this book and made money with the strategies. Recently, I bought puts on Cpq for 1/16 and sold them for 7/16 five days later using the peak strategy that Wade talks about. I knew Cpqs run wasn't sustainable based on valuations of their stock. There is a wealth of information in these books. Use them and benefit from them.

328% 1 day return! Thanks Wade!
Following the advice by Wade Cook in WSMM Vol. 2, I bought December 55 calls on THO on a stock split announcement. I bought @ (---) and sold @ (---) for a fantastic 328% 1 day return. If it wasn't for this excellent book by Wade, I never would have known how to do this. Thanks Wade! Looking forward to Wall Street Money Machine Vol. 7!!

I could not put it down...best trading book I have read yet!
While this book is not overly strong on technical details, it is excellent reading: well written and the author is liberal in showing his successess and his mistakes with equal candor. I consider this a "must read" for stock or comodiities traders/speculators. Marrty Schwartz discuss his methods that made him a champion trader, and gives one example of his "sheet of boxes that he prepares and uses daily, but I would have like a little more detail there. I like how he had to balance his family and his health with trading. His stories all have a point he is putting across.....well worth the money! Once I started. I couldn't put it down!!! If he writes another book, I'll buy it! The best trading book I have read so far!

A great read!
As a professional trader I am always looking for the "edge". This book is weak on actual trading methodologies. But I really enjoyed hearing about his daily life and routines as a trader. Especially what it's like when things go against you as they eventually will if you are in this game long enough.

I had trouble putting the book down. Highly recommended.

Woops, just got a fill, gotta go!

Very Fun Financial Read!
Here's a fun read in one of my favorite areas....dreaming of making a killing in the stock market. So much of this book is how I personally approached the stock market....giving up fundamental analysis for the glamour of technical trading....chasing down the perfect system whether it was Dow Theory, Elliot Wave, Joe Granville, or the obcure Magic T Theory (I thought that I was the only who really knew this one). The stories in this book are very entertaining like gambling stories. What I like most is the frank discussion of methodology...tactics that Buzzy shares....so similar to my own approach. If you are a Baby Boomer amateur technical stock market trader you'll probably love this book like I did. It's all about us and the 80's & 90's...pre-day trading.

25%= 1 day return! Thanks Wade....
Using the advice in Red Light Green Light and Wall Street Money Machine #1, I enjoyed a nice 25.91% 1 day return on NTE on a joint post stock split and earnings announcement.

I know that some of Wade's detractors will criticize this review and say this is after the fact. Sorry, I don't have a crystal ball so I can't post trades that I haven't made yet. Besides, no merchant has even refused my business from profits that I have made by trading using Wade's strategies nor has anyone ever refused my credit card, check or cash when then found out how I made a living.

And no one has ever critized my success by saying "it's after the fact."

The reality is that Wade's advice is right on. It works if you follow it.

I highly recommend Red Light Green Light, Wall Street Money Machine #1 and any book writen by Mr. Cook. The advice actually works.

Try it. You'll like it!

Just finished reading this one--Outstanding!!
In fact, this may very well be Wade's best book to date. Although a unsung hero, haven't heard very much about Red Light, Green Light untill a few days ago when a friend told me about it. I wanted to comment on that sole 1 star reviewer but will limit my comments since I believe this individual has a personal vendetta with Wade and did not make any articulate comments about the book itself. Perhaps this individual is a former, disgruntled employee of Wade Cook. Red Light. Green Light is an outstanding book and I highly recommend it along with Wall Street Money Machine Vol 1 and Brilliant Deductions.

Welcome back Wade!
Glad to see that the great Wade B. Cook is back after a hiatus.
Looking forward to your seminars and new strategies.

Red Light Green Light is a excellent book. But one for yourself and one for your broker. If you broker disagrees, FIR HIM and find a new broker.

Great strategies.

Excellent book!!
This is definitely a book for the novice, the intermediate and the professional trader.

The psychological section of the book is useful more towards the intermediate and the professional trader, whilst the trading tactics section is more designed for the novice and the intermediate trader, and the money management section for all three types of traders.

I found this book very helpful throughout my trading career and I would highly recommend that once you have read it not to discard it. You will find it greatly more beneficial to your trading career if you were to read it at least once every 1-2 years of your trading life, because certain areas in the book become highlighted and more readily understood as you mature.

The only reason why I gave it the 4 stars was Elder's fairly lack-lustre Money Management section (accounts for about 6% of the book). However if you find you would like to know more about Money Management (which is an integral part of trading) I would highly recommed K. van Tharp's "Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom."

Really A Must
Dr. Elder is a practicing psychiatrist. He is Russian origin and today he is well-known in Russia after his Moscow course of lectures on short-term investment in 1996. This book is translated into Russian and was published twice in Moscow ...

The first half of the book is pure psychology. The stock market in fact is a reflection of the human psychology. As the author points out, so many people who are educated think that because they are "school smart" that they must be able to master the financial markets just as well. It's the psychology and the mentality that goes into it. The author likens a typical losing trader (in other words, most traders!) to an alcoholic in denial. Traders are addicted to losing money. They get such a thrill from trading that they don't care if they win or lose.

The second half (Trading for a Living) is the core of the book. It is various trading strategies and technical information. If you're an experienced trader, you'll recognize most of it. The rule is simple: "buy low, sell high" or "short high, cover low". I think the author did an excellent job of covering a wide variety of strategies and trading tools. If you are new to trading, it may confuse the daylights out of you.

This book is a must have for anyone venturing into online trading. Dr. Elder lays out the three essentials of becoming a successful trader: Mind, Method and Money Management.

1. Mind: The psychological aspect of trading. Tells you to observe your own emotions as you trade.

2. Method: Technical analysis. Almost every major indicator is discussed here.

3. Money Management: Gives you some tips on how much to risk.

I have found a lot more detail in this book than in any other I've read so far. It is very enlightning. I give the book five stars. It is really good. If you don't mind the high price, buy it. It pays. You won't be disappointed. I highly recommend it to those traders who wants to improve the quality of their lives.

Alexander Petrochenkov

Read it for the third time
This is the type of book you keep on your shelf and read again and again. I just finished reading it for the third time and each time the learning becomes more valuable than the previous. The first reading gave me a broad understanding of the game, some of the formulas of the technical indicators seemed a little dry for the novice. But now I am so thankful for the formulas, they are the most treasured part of the book. I have used the formulas to plot my own graphs with my spreadsheet and have developed my own triple screen trading system witch is a system that isn't based on blind faith but a through understanding (which leads to confidence)of each indicator. So many people trade based on using an EMA or Stochastics or MACD, but what actually is it?
Buy this book and stop placing confidence and relying on other peoples data feeds and opinions, gain confidence and grow from within, trade from stable ground, your own. All the information you need to build a trading system can be found in this book along with the psychological aspect needed to trade it.
I place this book on par with Street Smarts and Dave Landry on Swing Trading.

Options, Futures and Other Derivative Securities

Author: John Hull

Average review score:

A Bible for the Derivatives market
This is a comprehensive book that is easy to read both as a reference book and as a learners guide to the derivatives market.

It is an excellent guide for stock-brokers, economists, mathematicians and anyone interested in the derivative markets who possess a fair understanding of probability theory and a basic knowledge of stochastic calculus.

The book deals with such issues of different types of options, portfolio hedging, options pricing, stock market models (e.g. Black-Scholes and Brownian motion) and the various jargon and equations used in the option market.

As other readers have suggested much of the book may be beyond certain readers who lack the mathematical background. For those interested in the subject and with a mathematical knowledge they should find this book succint, comprehensive and accurate.

Best Overall Derivatives Reference
John Hull manages to give a useful overview of all of the major derivatives products. He gives methods of valuation that are easy to understand. The first step to understanding is to get the correct terminology and breadth. Critics might say he doesn't give the most technical valuation techniques. That's not the point of a work like this. This is a reference which promotes illumination and allows one to integrate knowledge in the entire field. Detailed pricing models for each of these products and sophisticated yield curve building methods require additional study and separate debate. No one said it wasn't work, but this gives the dedicated professional the best cognitive guide book in the field. The coverage of credit derivatives is light, however. In addition to this book, I also highly recommend Tavakoli's "Credit Derivatives & Synthetic Structures".

Simply the Best!
This is the bible of options and futures markets. It is very well written, clear, and relatively easy to understand. However, you have to read it carefully as it minces its words. Every sentence is packed with information and is important. You may find 'easier' books, but they will not go the distance. So, save your money and get the best of them all. Risk Magazine lists this book as #4 among most widely cited papers/books between 1988 and 2003. No surprise there!

Failure Is Not an Option : Mission Control from Mercury to Apollo 13 and Beyond

In 1957, the Russians launched Sputnik and the ensuing space race. Three years later, Gene Kranz left his aircraft testing job to join NASA and champion the American cause. What he found was an embryonic department run by whiz kids (such as himself), sharp engineers and technicians who had to create the Mercury mission rules and procedure from the ground up. As he says, "Since there were no books written on the actual methodology of space flight, we had to write them as we went along."

Kranz was part of the mission control team that, in January 1961, launched a chimpanzee into space and successfully retrieved him, and made Alan Shepard the first American in space in May 1961. Just two months later they launched Gus Grissom for a space orbit, John Glenn orbited Earth three times in February 1962, and in May of 1963 Gordon Cooper completed the final Project Mercury launch with 22 Earth orbits. And through them all, and the many Apollo missions that followed, Gene Kranz was one of the integral inside men--one of those who bore the responsibility for the Apollo 1 tragedy, and the leader of the "tiger team" that saved the Apollo 13 astronauts.

Moviegoers know Gene Kranz through Ed Harris's Oscar-nominated portrayal of him in Apollo 13, but Kranz provides a more detailed insider's perspective in his book Failure Is Not an Option. You see NASA through his eyes, from its primitive days when he first joined up, through the 1993 shuttle mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope, his last mission control project. His memoir, however, is not high literature. Kranz has many accomplishments and honors to his credit, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but this is his first book, and he's not a polished author. There are, perhaps, more behind-the-scenes details and more paragraphs devoted to what Cape Canaveral looked like than the general public demands. If, however, you have a long-standing fascination with aeronautics, if you watched Apollo 13 and wanted more, Failure Is Not an Option will fill the bill. --Stephanie Gold

Mercury to Apollo: the inside scoop on the US space program
In my boyhoood, I collected news clippings of space flights like some others collected stamps. While I knew of the the complete or near-disasters of Apollo 1 and 13 which never escaped media attention, I could not imagine how many more instances of nervous questions there were on the ground at Mission Control Center (MCC) during many of the celebrated successful space shots.

Gene Kranz's book provides an insider's view into the inner workings of MCC, all the way from the Mercury program to the final Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Probably better suited than almost any one else to tell this story on how things looked from the ground, Kranz worked his career in NASA up to Flight Director, including for the memorable Apollo 11 and 13 flights which provide some of the most dramatic passages in the book. While the world savored the euphoria of the first men landing on the moon, Kranz tells of how he and his team were worrying about near fatal computer problems with the lunar lander. Most readers will be familiar with the Apollo 13 episode which was well enacted on the big screen with Tom Hanks , but Kranz's book provides some of the finer detail that the movie misses.

The book not only provides flight details of the manned spaced shots, but discuss some of the important management and technical issues which need to be resolved to move from Mercury through Gemini and Apollo. Kranz's epilogue concludes with some of his broader observatons and recommendations for future space policy.

Readers will be struck by the authoritarian and disciplined management style in the program, which Kranz does not easily hide. The author would probably have done well to use a ghostwriter or good editor. But apart from its prose which lacks elegance and an easy flow, this book provides an illuminating insight into how such a complex management feat was accomplished.

An insider's view of history
Gene Kranz was a flight director for most of the U.S. manned space program, and was on duty for some of the most critical events - including the first moon landing, and, of course the Apollo 13 accident.

In "Failure Is Not an Option," Kranz tells the story of Mission Control from the begining (he wrote some of the intial procedures manuals) through the Space Shuttle program. He shows how the ground controllers developed into a team, not only with each other, but with the astronauts on board the spacecraft.

Kranz may not be the most polished writer, but this is a first-person account from someone who helped make history. One of the things I really liked about the book is that Kranz not only took detailed notes during the missions (that was his first flight assignment), but he held on to them and used them to provide a more detailed account than I have seen before of the key missions from the perspective of Mission Control. He doesn't pull punches, and he's not afraid to admit mistakes, and this gives this book an air of honesty that you don't always find in an autobiography.

Must read after reading all the astronauts' books.
Gene Kranz's book tells a similar story, as told in books by Eugene Cerman, Scott Carpenter, and Chris Kraft, without being dominated by the author's ego. The others wrote good books. But Kranz avoids using personal attacks to tell his tale. The antidotes differ from those in other stories, as Kranz does not have a Boy Scout image to preserve. However, Kranz covers mission control only through Apollo 17.

This book is an excellent story of the space race from the ground.
