Jeeves and Bertie Wooster are my all-time favorite Wodehouse characters. The book, although written almost a hundred years ago, is still a lot of fresh fun. Impeccable language, unforgettable characters, and timeless humor - what can be better?

Some might consider these short stories a little repetitive, and I will agree with them, but I enjoyed this book nevertheless.

Recommended to anyone interested in classic English humor.

Topping stories for a whole lot of escapist fun!

This is the first Wodehouse book I read and it will not be my last. The anthology of adventures that Jeeves is involved in are not only funny, they are wildly entertaining. Some of the slang used in the book gives it a distinctly dated English tone, but still very readable nevertheless. The book is a pure escapist fun, frivolous read for everyone!

Wodehouse seems dated? Yes, thank heavens!

Did I read that correctly? The material is frothy and the characters haven't aged well? Perhaps lazza has missed the point of reading a Bertie and Jeeves.

The characters of Betram Wooster and Jeeves are, indeed, far removed from today's society -- but that's what makes them so priceless. We are taken on romp after romp through busy London in the roaring 20s and the sleepy English countryside. And in the day-to-day lives of these two characters, Wodehouse has preserved for us the life of domestic service and the frivolities of the upper class in the 20s.

Their lack of grit and raunchiness may be too tame for some, but P.G.'s Bertie and Jeeves deliver page after delightful page of sheer silliness, as Wodehouse strings us through meandering and beautifully crafted lines.

So, comparing Bertie and Jeeves to 2009? Seems a little like comparing a stroll in the park to an hour online and asking, "Which one's better?" P.G. Wodehouse was one of THE great writers of prose. So relax, read, and enjoy, because with Wodehouse, getting there is half the fun.

Wodehouse is perhaps the best antidote I know for depression. His novels are literally unreal, for Bertie inhabits a world of leisure, servants, and privilege, an Edenic world where even the threat of pain, suffering, and mortality have no place, and Jeeves is always there as a deus ex machina. But ultimately we return to Wodehouse (again and again!) because of the language--quite simply, the man cannot write a bad sentence.

"Think outside the pill . . . "

Anybody ever have a side effect from taking meds? For years I took theophyllin for asthma, until I self-diagnosed that this medicine was the cause of my rising blood pressure. My doctor at the time told me I would have to take it for the rest of my life, which probably would have been pretty short if I'd listened only to him. Instead, I researched the side effects of the drug, and sought out the opinion of another doctor. Today I am totally off it, and doin' just fine . . . no wheezing or other breathing difficulties, and my blood pressure, while still higher than what I want it to be, is 40 points lower without taking medication to lower it.

Suzy is a pharmacist who tells us to "think outside the pill," and gives us the knowledge needed to accomplish that goal. She tells us about plant extracts, vitamins, herbs, aromatherapy, and supplements. Her expose on osteoporosis (another of my hereditary risks) is the best I've seen. I didn't really care for Kevin Trudeau's book on natural cures, which totally bashed traditional medicine. However, through my career as a healthcare recruiter, I have seen the pharmaceutical reps toting in food and other treats to physician practices and ancillary hospital departments. They are not doing this to be nice, but to encourage the staff to pedal the drugs they sell. So Kevin's right about that. Suzy's book, however, give us the best of both worlds . . . natural cures and traditional medicine, and any holistic physician will tell you there's a time for both. Suzy shares her vast knowledge of natural cures and medicine, backing it up with well-reputed studies. If you're looking for solutions in a pill, this isn't the book for you. But if you like to manage your own health, with the help of well-educated professionals, this is a resource you shouldn't be without. Buy it, read it, and age well!

This book answers so many of the questions you would like to ask about maintaining your health. These are questions about managing your daily aches and pains, sniffles and coughs and other ailments that drag you down. If you ever wished you could have possible solutions to these problems, -literally at your fingertips, - then this book is for you.
And if you are taking prescription medications,- there is a whole section in the book about how some prescription drugs may deplete important vitamins and other necessary substances in your body. The author not only warns you about these possible drug side effects, she also takes it one step further - and suggests ways you can counteract these effects by using 'over the counter' herbs and vitamins from your local drug or health food store. I wish I had this book years ago.

It's easy to read and funny at times. But she makes sense. I experience alot of reactions from any prescription med, so I like the idea that I now have options. I like that she is knowledgeable in both natural and prescription products.

My biggest concern is that there is a shortage of livers now for transplants, what is going to happen in the next decade when we all need livers from blood pressure pills and statin drugs.

with eliot, a maximum of content is achieved through a FORM worked with a
care and conciousness not seen perhaps since the greeks. he understood,
as he once wrote, that the novel form ended with flaubert. in the centuries after picasso and stravinsky there is no place for anything in
literature which makes people remain sitting, whithout standing and perhaps dancing. the same thing could be said about pound, very different though very twin.

The Eliot of despair, the Eliot of 'Prufrock' and 'Wasteland' is contended with and overcome by the Eliot of the 'Quartets'. The message of modern mankind's meaninglessness, the broken fragments ( of Tradition) shored against his ruin is replaced by the vision of sacred turning, a Christian vision of redemption. Eliot is a writer whose work and life break down into these two distinct periods each of which has its champions in defining what is best in him.
As one raised on 'April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land' and 'Let us go then you and I when the evening is spread out against the sky, like a patient etherized upon a table' the most memorable lines are certainly of the first phase where it ends not with a bang but with a whimper.
Yet my admiration for the hypnotic power of Eliot's memorable lines is strongly qualified by my knowledge of his 'Burbank with a Baedaker, and Bluestein with a Cigar' with his all too fashionable literary anti- Semitism. Of course Eliot was not preaching death camps and extermination but he did connect his work to the tradition of Christian Anti- Semitism.
Thus I have always had difficulty being comfortable with my 'enjoying of Eliot's poetry. And I have never been able to sympathetically read 'The Quartets.' They have always seemed to me to be too impersonal characterless and abstract.
Eliot who for most of the century strode the English Departments as if he were a colossus did noble work in reviving interest in 'The Metaphysicals' but somehow failed in my mind to write a poetry humanly rich in the deepest sense.

When you think of the best poets ever, T.S. Eliot is one of those that comes to mind. His work is well crafted, intelligent, beautifully written, and has a flow to it that few poets can match. And this is a fine collection for the Eliot lover or for the reader unfamiliar with Eliot. It's divided into several sections. The first section is his Prufrock section, poems from 1917, which contains probably his finest poems: "Prufrock", "Preludes" "Rhapsody on a Windy Night", "Hysteria", among others. Then there is the Poems 1920 section which also contains many fine poems ("Sweeney Erect" and "The Hippopotamus" being my favorites). Then follows his masterpiece The Wasteland. Then The Hollow Men which is followed by the wonderful Ash Wednesday. Then the Ariel Poems (which contains "Journey of the Magi"). Then there are two unfinished poems, "Sweeney Agonistes" and "Coriolan" which I thought were weak. Maybe they would have been great had he ever finished them. Then there is a section called minor poems followed by the mediocre "Choruses from 'The Rock.' And then there is what I consider to be his true masterpiece, "Four Quartets." And the book finishes with some occasional verses, one of which is a sweet and touching poem to his wife. This is a great collection of poems.

Good stuff

Yep, this is a great collection of Eliot's works. I initially found out about Eliot throught the Movie 'Apocalypse Now' in which Brando is heard reciting the poem 'The Hollow Men'. The poem sounded so good I hunted it down and came across this little book.

My favourite poems would have to be 'The Hollow Men', 'Love song of Prufrock', 'Ash Wednesday' and 'Rannoch, by Glencoe (perfectly captured, drive through Rannoch and you'll see ;-)

Yep, definetly worth a read.

The recurring message in the book is that YOU are the one who is best able to make birthing choices for yourself. I like that the authors don't push one method over another. We pregnant women hear so many stories about delivery. This book reminds you that during labor, you will still be you--only in a more heightened state--so go with options that fit the type of person you (already) are when creating your birth plan. Good over-view of options and choices to think about ahead of time.

This was a really great book although it was not what I expected exactly. I was expecting some sort of quiz that would send me in the direction of a specific method based on my personality. That didn't happen. But it did explain, it great detail, what goes down during labor, birth, c-section if you have to have one, and post-partum. Not a one size fits all explanation, but a variety of things that happen to different women kind of explanation. During these essays, it did go through various coping strategies based on what one might do if that had a dental abscess and had to wait for an appointment or something like that. The big question, how do you cope with fear, anxiety, pain in your every day life? Here's a list of ways that might correspond to that during the birth process. I feel like I know a lot more about what to expect, what things might feel like, and the wide variety of alternate endings that can go down. I feel better just knowing something about that stuff. And I feel somewhat empowered knowing what I can ask for if I want/need it too. This book really drove home getting a support system in place and that I do not have to conform to any specific method, which I really appreciate a lot. I would highly recommend this book to any first time mother who wants to know what she is in for and is not sure she and any specific method are a match. It will help you build a great foundation for your birthing plan.

To have all 19 reviews at present be five stars is a little over the top, especially when you consider this gem on page 126:

"Redhat- This is the country's largest and fastest growing Linux software company. This is a rarity for me, owning a genuine growth company. I can't see anything on the horizon that will induce me to sell it. I have believed since I bought it that it was an estate builder. Of course it is outrageously overpriced, but for this baby I throw caution to the winds."

A good read for the person who is trying to turn a little money into a lot of money. This book gives you many categories of stocks to consider and the author lists his favorites in each sector.

A word of caution because these are very speculative stocks with high volatility. I like his practice of keeping one third of his portfolio in speculative plays while allocating two thirds to income stocks producing dividends of at least 6%.

Very entertaining with just the facts and no fluff.

This is a wonderful book. I have to agree with all the positive remarks in these 5 star reviews. The strategies are different and unique and I believe will work. I'm sure going to give them a try anyway. But, to me, the background material Mr. Carach includes adds so much to the book. It makes whats been going on in our economy much more understandable and thereby helps you understand why the investment strategies presented will work. The section called "The Wrath of Adam Smith" for example is a real eye opener. I highly recommend this book.

Fred Carach speaks from the weight of experience gained from the
school of hard knocks. As a futures and options trader myself with
twenty years in the industry, even from a brief reading it's readily
apparent that the author truly knows his craft -- the business of
small cap investing within the natural resource sector.

His trading style and philosophy are completely unorthodox (a big plus
point in my book). His views on technical analysis, stop-loss orders
and other conventional Wall Street wisdom surely would have him
condemned for heresy, however, I suspect the author would feel such a
charge be considered a badge of honour.

This book is full of common sense and a distillation of wonderful
investment stories. I can highly recommend it.

The Guru Next Door
Although I never had the opportunity to meet Bruce DiMarsico I feel like I should know him. Over the years I have heard Wendy speak of him and his Option Method. I see how knowing him and believing in his teachings have made Wendy the woman she is today. She is by far the most grounded person I know. She wanted Bruce and his Option Method to live on. In writing The Guru Next Door she has succeeded in that goal. She has created a wonderful book. It combines an engaging story about Annie along with excerpts taken from Bruce's writing. The end result is a wonderful adventure and an insightful look into happiness. Not only does my sister talk the talk but she also walks the walk. I know Bruce would be as proud of her as I am.

A delightful blend of self-help and fiction, "The Guru Next Door: A Teacher's Legacy" follows Annie as she deals with her highly dysfunctional family. Her father is gone, her grandmother apparently hates her, her mother is a recluse, and everyone around her is simply unhappy. Her only hope is her next door neighbor, a shining beacon in the sea of darkness that is her life. Teaching readers mental well-being can be found even when everything seems terrible, "The Guru Next Door" is a great pick for anyone who needs their spirits lifted.

Bob Critchley's book provides a powerful and compelling argument for "thinking outside the box".

The population demographics are inevitable and organisations ignore them at their own peril.

Unless organisations adopt flexible ways of engaging employees and think laterally about how to maximise the contribution of every single employee, they are doomed to become victims of the demographic reality.

Critchley's book not only provides the evidence and demonstrates the inevitibility - but he also provides a compendium of ideas about how to respond.

An invaluable guide to any forward thinking HR professional.

Time marches slowly on and we all tend get caught up in our day to day and short term activities. Just like when global warming incidents started to occur. In isolation they meant little and then a pattern and explanation emerged. Critchley pulls together the signs in our demographic and employment changes. Dramatic shortages in skilled labour arise; a lack of investment in infrastructure becomes apparent; retirement and aged care issues start to be reported in the media; the funding of retirees becomes a federal budget issue; government start to create incentives to get people back to work. For those who run businesses other symptoms become apparent. So often the employer has to convince the prospective employee why to join them; the employer becomes aware of impending skill losses as older employees approach retirement age; people talk about not wanting to fully retire and having flexible arrangements; the employer can't find the right people.
Critchley's book suddenly pulls all these incidents and changes in attitude together into one easy flowing cohesive read. He paints a picture of why things are happening and what is likely to continue to happen. More importantly he canvasses what needs to be done for organisations to be successful in this environment. Many organisations pay lip service to people being their most important asset and often they have a short term focus. Critchley really sets down some ideas and a framework that organisations, who really do value people, will need to adopt to be successful in the long term. A must read.

Under the guise of being about trading securities, this is an excellent book about life, about observing what work gives you and what it deprives you of. About making changes that lead to a richer life and how to know when work costs too much. It also offers wonderful insights into the life of a trader and the paradox of being a good trader and trying to balance that with being a good Christian.

Entertaining and insightful book about values and business

Joe has done a good job of taking interesting stories from his life and distilling an excellent life-lesson from each. Joe's life comes through clearly in this well written collection. He is transparent and engaging. Not only does it draw us to examine our inner health and values, but to look to our own stories for the lessons hidden in them. Worth a plane flight to read it.

I think this book was great, and one of a kind.

Lessons From the Pit was a very fasinating and involving book. It is obvious that Joe Leininger spent a lot of time thinking and planning this book. This book is not one where the first chapters are interesting. The whole story is interesting. I kept saying to myself "at the end of the chapter, I will go to sleep, but I just couldn't put it down! He talked about personal subjects also, making you feel like you were just talking to him, alone. I highly recommend this book, and I think that Lessons From the Pit was the best book I have read so far.

I probably brought a slightly different perspective to reading this book than many readers. My infertility journey ended several years ago when my husband & I made the painful decision to abandon infertility treatments & live childless/free. It's been a long time since I cracked open a guide to infertility, and in fact, I have given away most of the ones I had in my collection.

However -- the shadow of infertility & loss continue to hover over my life, which is why, even after all these years, I continue to read books, articles & blogs about it -- including Mel's blog, Stirrup Queens, which I love. She is a great support for those of us in the ALI (adoption, loss & infertility) community, and so I was keen to read her book.

Even though I found some sections more interesting/applicable than others (as I'm sure most readers did, or will), I loved the book, and I wish it had been around when I was going through treatment. Most infertility guides that I've read tend to be a tad clinical. Not this book. The tone is that of a slightly older/wiser girlfriend who'd already been there/done that and is filling you in on what to expect when you're NOT expecting and trying to do something about it.

It's a book I would definitely recommend to anyone going through infertility. It would also be fabulous to read if you're a fertile person hoping to gain some insight into what a friend or family member is going through and how you can best support them.

Because my husband & I wound up living without children, I was particularly interested in what Melissa would have to say on the subject, and went straight for the chapter on childfree living first. Very few books on infertility say much about the childless/free option beyond a few paragraphs -- so I'm always interested to see how the subject is covered in any new IF book that I come across.

I'm happy to say she more than did the subject justice. The whole concept of "choosing" to live childless/free is one that many women in my shoes struggle with, but Melissa makes the valid point that, rather than accepting the childfree option as a "default," you have to take an active role in carving out your future.

Melissa covered many aspects of living childfree. She makes a point of distinguishing between living childfree by choice and childfree after infertility, and also between taking a break and actually choosing to live childfree. She suggests a trial period (something an infertility counsellor recommended to my husband & me). She talks about how the childfree are frequently made to justify their choice (so true), and what happens when one partner wants to live childfree and the other doesn't.

I also learned a lot about other aspects of the infertility journey. And oh, to have had Melissa's list of comebacks to unthinking friends & relatives 10 years ago...!

This book is awesome!! This is book uses the tour guide type theme through out the book, and that helps to guide you through the different areas of infertility (IF). With Melissa's unique prose she helped me understand things that I have read in other books and couldn't ever get. This is a 'real' world book- not just full of medical terminology and cookie cutter definitions. You can feel her talking to you! I have found myself laughing outloud many many times.

This is by far the best IF guidebook out there. Melissa Ford tells it to you straight, but also manages to be supportive and kind in dealing with such an emotional topic. I love that she is inclusive of every kind of IF as well as every possible solution. Melissa Ford is definitely the friend you want in your backpocket as you traverse the island of IF.

(Background: I am infertile as a result of endometriosis and am an adoptive mother.)

When I first ordered this book and received it I didn't think I would read it at all, since in my mind I am residing in Mamaland and I'm not marooned in IF anymore. I intended to tuck it away and eventually give it to a friend who was beginning her IF journey. But I love books and couldn't resist thumbing through the pages, getting a feel for the book's layout and style. Immediately the chapter on adoption caught my eye and I read from that chapter to the end of the book the first night the book came in the mail, then went back the next day and started reading from the beginning.

(I did end up using the book for its intended purpose, as well. As I'm typing this I don't have my copy of the book to refer to; I've lent it to a friend who, unfortunately, was dumped into the land of IF recently and is still in the diagnosis acquisition phase.)

Anyhow, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and got a lot more out of it than I thought I would. I admire Mel a lot, so I don't mean that I didn't expect her book to be great. It's just that I didn't think I could learn anything about infertility from a book that I hadn't already read online. I was wrong! It was an entertaining and informative read.

Comprehensive and real... great introduction to IF!

I am a loyal reader of Melissa Ford's blog, and I was thrilled to hear that she had written a book. Even though this is my second journey through infertility and I am reasonably familiar with the topic, I knew I could rely on Melissa for a comprehensive and truthful IF guide, marked with her wit and candor. I purchased it as a "refresher" before heading back to the RE for help conceiving another child, and it served its purpose well. Some of my favorite aspects: it covers the three main areas of IF (emotional/physical/financial) unlike previous books I have read that tackle only one; she cheers you on and makes you smile even while talking about poking yourself with needles; she breaks down the complex treatment options into readable sections so you can digeset the overview; the practical advice on handling comments from others and relationships with "fertiles"; and as she has been-there-done-that, she shares her own struggles that make the information feel like it's coming from a friend.

This book is very appropriately titled, as it is a the perfect guide to navigating the various intertwining aspects of IF. Well done.

I have had many years of investing experience including options and the technique of covered call writing. I read the book Cashing in on Covered Calls and was amazed at the clear explanation Alan Ellman provided concerning the selection of potential stocks and their evaluation for covered call writing. I have tried the method he outlines, and found it to be helpful and profitable, even in a terrible market environment.

Dr. Ellman supports the book with an excellent website and blog site where questions can be asked and answered .

Cashing in on Covered Calls. Investing with Stock Options

Janet and I are retired and wanted an avocation to supplement our Social Security and pay for our meds. Allen's Book gave us the knowledge and the support we needed to get started. In my first three weeks, I earned over $7800 using his methodology. Not a bad income generator, huh? I advise senior citizens nearing or at retirement age to investigate their potential for selling covered calls and investing with stock options.

It is all about money management. Janet and I have a Get Rich Pile ($3500) which we use for buying and selling options. We also have a Stay Rich pile which is our 401k rollovers...we don't let the broker run it any more. We manage them. Allen's book, blogs, forms and secrets for success are in this book. It is the closest thing we have found to a silver bullet. Be careful out there...these are hard times.
