A nice little variations bookThis is a book for the player who wants analysis of numerous variations in brief, unemphatic prose. There is little of the "ideas behind the opening" material that is essential to the lesser player (the reader might want to find Soltis' brief chapbook on the opening from some years ago for this type of thing), nor is there intricate theoretical discussion that a master level treatment might involve. Instead, this book seems geared for the A or B player, giving lines as developed in tournament praxis. I do not believe this is the best book with which to take up Larsen's, but if one enjoys playing Larsen's, this is a nice supplement to one's preparation.

HelpfulPublished in 1993, the only downside i see is that it only contains 144 pages of material. There is a bonus however, in that the Modern defence is also addressed. The Pirc defence (1.e4 d6, 2.d4 Nf6, 3.Nc3 g6, 4.Nf3 Bg7) is a close relation to the King's Indian defence, the only difference being White has played e4 instead of c4. The game can also transpose to the Pirc if 1.d4 d6 and White chooses 2.e4 instead of 2.c4 but it would be a good idea to have another system available if e4 is not forthcoming. Black's idea is to have White establish a pawn centre with the idea of rapidly undermining it, creating an unbalanced position and exciting play. The Modern defence (1.e4 g6, 2.d4 Bg7) can also lead back to the Pirc, but that's not set in stone. The Modern defence can lead to it's own set of complications for both sides. Overall, it's a good book to have, especially if you're a King's pawn player and have to face Pirc or Modern defence players and you need some general theory and positional understanding.

Opening and Closing Closures: Closures
Published in Paperback by Design & Sew (August, 1996)
Amazon base price: $28.00
Average review score:

Functionality of closings turned into artistic closureThis book has fascinating ideas on how to take every day closures and turn them into an intergral part of the garment rather than just a functional necessity.
Good explainations of how to incorporate unusual and non standard closures into garments before they are cut out. Directions are adequate and pictures good for closure but a full garment picture with inset of closure would be more effective. Full garments were on TV program and really showed how these closures were such a part of the total that they did not stand out as closures.
Book is excellent and shows what can be done with a little imagination, recycling unusual small objects and basic to advanced sewing skills. A book for anyone who appreciates the unusual and loves to sew.

Opening Day and Other NeurosesWhat a wonderful book, especially for the fly fisherman that I am. I love to fish, and this book taught me a lot of techniques, hints, and secrets. This book is full of suggestions on how to catch fish in different environments. So if you like catching little brookies in narrow streams or tarpon in the ocean, this book has something to teach you. The author, William Tapply, has been an avid fisherman his whole life. This book also taught me some awesome tricks on how to tie my flies. I also learned when and how to use certain types of flies/bait in different conditions. I recommend this book to any obsessive fisherman like myself.

Deep insight into the teachings of Tibetan BuddhismThis book is for anyone who wants great insight into Tibetan Buddhism. For those who were disappointed with introduction books to Buddhism, H.H. Dalai Lama gets in depth into the paths, teachings, and practices in Buddhism. It is a very detailed book and teaches Buddhism in depth and not in an overview fashion. Very insightful and I was able to learn a vast amount of knowledge from reading this book. H.H. Dalai Lama, I feel is an amazing writer and is a source of compassion and knowledge for anyone. If you would like to know more about Buddhism than just an overview and ways to cultivate the wisdom inside of you, I would say this is the book for you.
