Interesting Approach to King Pawn's Opening
Published in 1995, this 125 page volume is considered a 'delayed King's Gambit'. Move order for White usually consists of 1.e4 2.Nc3 3.Bc4 4.d3 5.f4 6.Nf3 and 7.O-O Unlike the King's Gambit though, the F pawn is protected on it's release by the Queen's Bishop since the Queen's Pawn is previously moved to d3. The King's Rook at some point should have a half-open F file to manuever on, which does have it's advantages. The downside to this opening is that it doesn't place pressure on Black's King Pawn immediately, giving Black more room to breathe so to speak in the very beginning. White has a choice of quiet strategic lines and violent gambits. Fun to pull out to surprise your opponent.

An incredible yet little known true story
This account of the first south-north crossing in Victorian times is incredible. A film of this story several years ago did little to change that situation. The story recounts the key attempts and the elaborate expeditions involved. The crux of the story really revolves around a series of many mishaps and oh so near misses. Tragedy was almost avoided numerous times but ultimately...well read the book. The fact that the story is known and accurately recorded is in itself an incredible sub-plot. It is hard to believe sometimes that this is a true story -- yet this is a case of real life being more amazing than one would dare write as fiction! The story is quite detailed but hang in there, the threads all come together in an incredible finale.

An interesting book about a true American explorer
This book gives an interesting and factual account of the life of Daniel Boone and his adventures in the wilderness. The information in this book is written in a way thats easy to understand. It keeps you interested all the way through. You will learn about the many close encounters Boone has with death. This book also tells about Boone's life with the Indians in captivity. Their are many pictures in this book that help to give you a better picture of what is going on. The book begins by describing Boone's parents and early life. Here I learned many things I didn't know about Boone. Then the book tells of Boone's life after his marraige to Rebecca Bryan, and their settlement in Kentucky. It is here that you will read about Boone's expeditions with his fellow settlers and their deadly encounters with the Indians. One interesting story the book tells is how Boone rescues two of his daughters from Indian captivity. The book then tells of Boone's life after he moves away from Kentucky. Finally it tells of his tragic death from acute indigestion caused by eating too many sweat potatoes. Their are so many interesting things you will read about in this book. For example, it tells of Boone's son and his friend being skinned alive slowly by Indians. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about US explorers, or adventures in the forests. It is also a great book for book reports and projects because it has excellent pictures and key facts. In the back of the book their is even a timeline summarizing Boone's life. Anyone interested should definitely read this book!

Get Strong at the Opening

If you want to get ahead
The Get Strong at Go series is not the easiest set of books for complete beginners however if you've read through a few books already (J. Kim is a good author to learn with) and got some hands on experience then you will be ready for this book. The series breaks down most of the elements of Go into several categories making it easier to understand. Get Strong at Opening (like most of the series) helps you not only understand the game better but also develope an intuition for the game. This is acheived with the books problem and answer format, on each page there is 2-5 problems for you to work on followed on the next page with the answers, variations and continuations to some answers and sometimes examples of how not to play. Most examples can be read from either black or whites perspective killing two birds with one stone. A must buy for anyone serious about Go.

Remembering traditions of the past and present
Reading Homemade Hospitality brought back many memories of my childhood and youth when families and friends visited regularly. There were always refreshments available for visitors, including adding more ingredients to stretch the meals. Barbara's ideas for entertaining were delightful and would make any party, luncheon, or overnight visit fun and exciting. The description of her friendship with the dear and precious lady, Mrs. Mary Cunningham, who was my former sixth grade teacher and friend, made the book even more special. This book, in today's rushed and technologically advanced society, reminds us that we should continue family traditions, especially through being hospitable to others--wherever we are.

Give a Gift with Meaning
Someone gave me this book as a gift for my birthday, and it was without doubt the best gift I received! It is not an ordinary historical book or a self-help book; rather, it offers a lens to look at -- and to deeply connect with -- history. (And the pictures are really beautiful!)

I thought the book would just tell me how to read my dreams, or tell me how the ancients read theirs; but instead, it offers a process that affects my waking hours as well. I feel like I am interacting with my dreams WHILE interacting with the generations of people who came before me. It is certainly a religious book, but, for someone like me who is not very religious, it offers a spiritual perspective for my own life without any of the potentially intimidating aspects of formal religious study. I have put this book on my holiday gift list for six of my friends/family, both male and female and will give it to friends all year for birthdays.

Versatility for your repertoire!
I have been playing the King's Indian against 1.d4 for about three years. I started out using the lines suggested by Gufeld in his book "The Art of the King's Indian". After a few months I found out that I usually ended up in uncomfortable positions in some of the lines. For example, I had huge problems getting effective counterplay in the now very popular line 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be2 e5 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5 Ne7 9.b4!

Luckily I found Burgess's book, which provided me with more active lines and turned out to improve my results considerably against this queen pawn opening. The book also covers the Classical Lines, including the one mentioned above, but it gives Black extra weapons to vary from this line if you find it awkward. Several of the variations are crafted around the idea of developing the knight through a6 instead of c6. For example, one alternative in the Classical Variation would be to play 6...Na6!?

The other great idea I found in this book is the pawn sacrifice against the Samisch Variation. After browsing through the book and seeing this line, I played through the variations in a study session. A couple of weeks after, I was playing in a blitz tournament against a player with a rating of 2100 (I was 1800) and he played the Samisch. I decided to give the pawn sacrifice a try and won convincingly. After the game he told me that he always had trouble with that line. Needless to say that I have also lost countless games playing the pawn sacrifice, but at least it is fun to play and gives Black great opportunities for counterattack.

I have found this book a lot more useful than Gufeld's, and the very few weak points it has, can be complemented by "The Art of the King's Indian" or by "Bronstein on the King's Indian". Overall, I give the book 4.5 stars!
