The best way to open a game of chess
Chess grandmaster Raymond Keene analyses the compelling question of the best way to open a game. The advantages of both the traditional Sicilian defence and the more abstract and offbeat openings are discussed. Alltogether an excellent way to improve your own game. A must have for any chess enthusiast. (Published by Hardinge and Simpole).

Will lift you up and Jump Start your brain
"Openings" is a book that you can pick up any time and find something worthwhile to take away with you. This is a great gift book. I was very impressed by the total quality of this book since it is published by a very small press in Seattle, WA. - nice job!

Quotations and wisdom gathered over many years are separated into subject areas such as "Peace", "Laughter & Humor", "Journey" and so on. Many of the quotations are from names you would recognize. You'll find such treasures as this piece of wisdom by Beej Whiteaker-Hawks: "Excuses keep integrity at bay", and this quotation by Victor Borge "Laughter is the shortest distance between two people", or this one by Margaret Atwood "A Word after a Word after a Word is Power."

This is a timeless book that you will pick up five years after you have purchased it and love it all over again. I highly recommend it.

Plan Like a Grandmaster

Epic and classic
This is one of the greatest instructional manuals every written on chess. It has that "chess magic" that I have found in only a few books. Suetin was a great writer. This book teaches you chess, focusing on the opening and the transition to the middlegame, showing you common themes and ideas. There is a lot of text, which explains the chess ideas which are being fleshed out, and then he provides illustrative games with brief annotations displaying that theme. There are over 350 games presented. For instance, he will tell you that many short games are won due to black's weakness at f7. He then will show you games of whatever opening--be it queen's gambit or the pirc--and will display how the f7 point was weak. This is a marvelous instructive method, as the reader begins to see themes in his own games. Other books have tried to do this as well, but one senses that Suetin really scored with this book and this method. It isn't like a lot of chess books of miniatures, that classify them by opening. Rather, the book is classified by themes, but there are a huge number of illustrative games that hammer the theme into your sub-conscious. But don't get the idea that there isn't a lot of text; there is, but it seems Suetin wanted you to play through the games themselves on your won, with fairly sparse annotations. So, you aread explanatory text, then play games, which have brief annotations. And something magic happens. If you have this book, as well as his other books "Three Steps to Chess Mastery" and "A Contemporary Approach to the Middlegame," you are set for the middlegame. And I must add that his book on the Ruy Lopez, "The Complete Spanish," is a compellingly beautiful opening treatise as well. The present book is quite rare, but definitely essential for the intermediate player.

Play the King's Indian Defence
Published in Paperback by Pergamon Press (February, 1984)
Author: Drazen Marovic
Amazon base price: $12.50
Used price: $14.00

He's a great writer and teacher
Simply put, Marovic is one of the best chess writers. He is a GM but knows how to communicate chess to you. All of his books are a joy to study. This book, along with his work, Play the Queen's Gambit, somehow seem to get a lot of use by me, while other more famous books go untouched. Marovic writes with passion, but not in an unbridled manner. He is always a perfect blend of intensity, variations, text, and enthusiasm. This book on the King's Indian is great. I love these Pergamon books from the '80. They were beautifully produced, they had sections covering variations, and each chapter had several illustrative games, and there is a nice index at the back. Sounds simple, right? Then why can't EVERYMAN books do it? Why can't GAMBIT do it? This is a great book, a perfect chess openings book.

Play the Tarrasch (Pergamon Chess Openings)

Collectible price: $9.98

Worth hunting down any buying
This nicely done Pergamon hardcover starts by exploring the history of the Tarrasch, presenting several games that show typical ideas. Like nearly all Pergamon books from the '80s, this one is very nicely produced and put together. It has a more prefessional feel than Schiller's Cardoza books. I love his Cardoza book on the Tarrasch too, but this one feels more like a traditional opening treatise.

I came across Praying the Catechism as I was looking for different ways to incorporate the richness of my Catholic faith into my everyday life. At times the Catechism of the Catholic Church can be difficult to approach but I find this book opens up the simple beauty of the faith in very user-friendly way. Designed to compliment the four pillars of the faith, the daily meditations provide a wonderful beginning point for internalizing, through prayer, what we believe.
