Best Bed & Breakfast available
Found this entertaining, fun, and highly informative. If you need encouragement in starting a b & b biz, this is for you! Great anecdotes that are amusing and educational. Good advice all around. Particularly liked the checklists.

Most complete
Have you ever flirted with the idea of opening a B&B? Many people have, but most don't have any idea where to start. Jan Stankus's book will tell you everything you'll need to know whether you have one spare room or six.

I admit I was thinking about the possibility of buying a larger house than we can afford and putting the unused space to use as a B&B. I needed information, but surfing the Internet was a long and time consuming job.

I did end up with two trade journals, that I'll tell you about later, but there is no web site that has the plethora of information in this book.

This book is very well written. I actually sat down with it and read most of it straight through, like a novel. The index is so good you can easily go back to the topics you'll need if you pursue the B&B route.

Stankus doesn't pull any punches when she tells what's involved in owning and operating a B&B. I found out things like:

* the difference between a B&B and an inn

* safety concerns for yourself and your house

* zoning issues and ordinances

* insurance, fire laws, and other legal requirements

* furnishing and outfitting your home

* how to get in the guide books

* applying to and using an RSA (reservation service agencies)

* ways to market your B&B business

* what's involved in the B&B lifestyle

* your competition - how to find it and use it to your advantage

* how to price your rooms

* determining your start-up costs

* amenities - what are they and do you need them

Included are: some useful web sites; a state-by-state list of the RSA's; U. S. & Canadian tourist offices; and a number of various work sheets.

Stankus also deals with issues such as allowing pets or children as guests, medical concerns, food preferences and allergies.

There is enough information to give a reader a solid background in how a B&B works.

Here are some other sources if you're enamoured of the idea of a B&B:

* look for local or regional classes (many times taught by owners of B&B's)...

As always, Globe Pequot's "How To" series is chock full of useful information, reasonably priced, and delivers more than expected. I've decided B&B (or innkeeping) isn't for me. But, if you want to explore the option for yourself, I can't think of a better book to start with.

Easy reading/great information
After taking a seminar in Opening a Bed and breakfast, I found this book to be very informative and influential in my decision of opening my own Bed and Breakfast soon. Realizing it will take a few years to get it up and running successfully, I know that this will be my goal and I feel I will be very successful in this endeavor with the help of my husband.

How to Open Doors in the Music Industry: The Independent Way

Good advice from someone who obviously knows the ropes.
Very good and easy to read. I wish I'd known about this book earlier. I'm going to keep it close at hand.

Great musicians reference tool.
I have just finished reading your book and I have found it a very interesting read. My only regret is that I did not have a copy four or five years ago, as many of the areas you point out as possible pitfalls, I have already managed to blunder into through trial and error. I have a lot to learn about the music industry and what I have learned has only been from some very costly and time wasting ventures on my behalf. I hope to avoid many of these in the future. As I read through your book my empathy increased and each chapter seemed to echo some of my more bitter disappointments, but I also began to see some of my triumphs stemming from similar ideas that you had proposed, so I know that I am at least heading in the right direction. All in all, a good concise, practical book that I will refer to for further reference. Thank you Frank Fara and Patty Parker.

The best book for anyone starting out in the music industry
"How to Open Doors in the Music Industry: The Independant Way" is the best book there is for anyone starting out in the music industry. Whether you are an artist, songwriter or industry person, you will find a wealth of information in this book. Frank Fara & Patty Parker really made an easy to understand publication that you will want to refer back to again & again. This book is a Hit! As a songwriter and artist manager myself, this book really got me going in the right direction by enabling me to understand the market and therefore charting in Europe and the U.S. In my opinion "How to Open Doors in the Music Industry" is a must read and will help you along in your career.

Solid Read
This is a solid read with excellent examples of the information provided for someone like me who is on the verge of their first western hunts. There is nothing fancy or high dollar here at all, which I found very refreshing in this world of magazine articles where thousands of dollars paid at a fenced in farm allows trophy "hunting". It is a book that I will read again.

hunting open-country mule deer
Dwight Schuh did another good job on this book. Every bowhunter needs to read this book. After reading it they will want a hunting parnter like Dwight Schuh. Good tips - good reading

the most comprehensive book on hunting mule deer
I have been hunting mule deer for the last fifteen years. I read this book after hunting these deer for about eight or so years. I have found it to be the most complete book available about finding and stalking mule deer. It also goes indepth in equipment, scouting, tactics that really work and hunting the different seasons. Schuh bowhunts but this book can be used by all hunters, rifle and bow. It also will help you narrow down areas in which to hunt if you are going to an area you've never been before. You will maximize hunting time by learning where to start looking. It will cut down wandering all over the mountains looking for deer that usually are in small pockets. If planning an out of state hunt or just starting out hunting, this book is worth its weight in gold. I can not say enough positive things about this book. Schuh also publishes other books that are extremely well written and easy to read as well as useful.

Open and Clothed: For the Passionate Clothes Lover

Authors: Andrea Siegel and Andrea Lynn Siegel
Amazon base price: $24.00

Intelligent, unique book about humans and clothing.
Open and Clothed is one of the most interesting, intelligent, funny and unique books I've read in a long time (and I am an avid reader!). It is not only about clothes and fashion, but about the human being wearing the clothes and the dynamics thereof. A person's relationship to clothing is explored in a way that opens the subject in what I think is an unprecendented way. A must read for all who wear clothing!

Finally, a book about fashion and style that makes sense
Every few months I buy a "woman's" magazine or fashion magazine looking for that elusive "something". Within the pages of OPEN and CLOTHED, however, I found it all. This is a book for people who want integrity with their fashion statements, whatever they may be. This book offers insight and support for REAL women (and men), not just wannabe models. Siegel's voice is strong and clear, full of warmth, humor, and above all, a style that never goes out of fashion.

Excellent for a quick fix of fun/inspiration
I'm not a passionate clothes lover. My wife got this book. Still I find myself reading it every chance I get. You can open to any page and get fascinating history/anecdote/thought on humans and their clothing and how it might all relate to you. Lots of quotes, lists, questionnaires, ideas, advice, etc. And scholarly endnotes to boot. As a lazy reader who appreciates a quick fix of entertainment/enlightenment I recommend it totally.

Very concise
I wish more books were this concise and to the point. Very deep, very interesting, and worth every penny.

Open and Innocent
One of the best! Scott has a remarkable way of drawing your attention to what is really important, this moment, the only moment you truly have. It is amazing that such a small book can be so filled with wisdom. A book that I have read and enjoyed many times and look forward to reading and enjoying again.

A Peace That Depends On Nothing
In my lifelong search for truth and wisdom, Scott Morrison's work has been pivotal for me. His sincerity and depth of understanding are stunning, and Open and Innocent will make your heart glow with happiness and loving kindness. There are so many wonderful surprises in this book! Like an old friend, he gently encourages the reader to abandon the arrogance and pretense of opinion and knowing in advance, and to discover firsthand the wonder and beauty of this present unknown moment.

Open Season on Lawyers (Wheeler Large Print Softcover Series)
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (July, 2003)
Author: Taffy Cannon
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Crais, Coben and Cannon
From TV to movies to a dark history of mystery noir, we just can't get our fill of that slice of humanity that passes for L.A. underbelly. And when we're talking L.A. Low, we're talking L.A. Law. For some reason, the lawyers getting theirs in this book never come off as quite slime-ball enough for my taste. But in fairness, there's a balancing act going on here between the ongoing plottings of a serial killer (so bland he blends) and his deserving victims. It's hard to tell who the real bad guys are without a good detective so Cannon delivers up her most well rounded protagonist yet - Joanna Davis, an empty nesting middle aged career cop who gets the case of a lifetime - especially after it becomes intensely personal. Cannon's SoCal circus is populated with a great sideshow of characters all given their marching orders by the masterful mystery ringmaster. How she loves to get crack that wit. On Viki Vale, trophy wife: "The lady shopped at some classy stores, but she had a gift for finding the sleaziest apparel each had to offer. Basically this was a room to get naked in. Trash will out." In the whatever happened to Vicki Vale category, hey? What did happen to Vicki Vale? No matter. Another character. "Nothing in this office indicated that its occupant had a personality. Including the occupant." Or the Midwest sheriff. "The big, barrel-chested sheriff wore no overcoat and his improbable uniform featured a lot of silly cords and complicated braids and shiny hardware. He looked like an organ grinder's monkey on steroids." Or a victim's wife as "an ebony stunner". Good stuff. This is a well plotted, highly engaging and entertaining read that cascades to a clever and unpredictable action climax. Mystery trolls will appreciate that this is an honestly written caper - the planted clues all come together in the end as Cannon gets the last laugh. Sometimes the author's sharp wit works against her; i.e. - "The Atterminator" - the name the local then national press ascribes to the lawyer killing antagonist works against giving the book a really gritty anchor. The female detective is almost too perennially optimistic - is this woman too nice to be a cop? I don't know. But she's likable. While investigating a twelve step program, she observes "Nobody had founded Cigars Anonymous, a program she considered desperately overdue." She doesn't have the angst or sex drive of Robert Crais' lady cop in L.A. Requiem and the only reason I bring that up is cause this book is close to being as captivating as that great piece of L.A. noir, imho. Any comparison in that company is pure compliment. Open Season on Lawyers is a good read that really gets up on its legs after the case breaks, running all the way to a heart pounding finish.

unusual, to say the least!
If you've ever had a less-than-happy experience with an attorney, you'll LOVE this book! It's everyone's fantasy about how to rid oneself of an enemy. Or perceived enemy, at any rate.

Joanna Davis is a wonderful creation; a police detective on the LAPD force who is tough yet sensitive, smart yet cautious, feminine but strong, a very young grandmother and an almost-menopausal woman, all rolled into one delightful bunch of contradictions. Any woman who reads this book would like to have a Joanna in her life as a friend.

Of course, almost anyone who reads this book would probably like to have the 'perp' as a friend, too, as long as one stayed on his good side. He's clever and funny and thoughtful and kind to the elderly; it's just most of the legal profession of which he's not overly fond.

This is a delightful book, satisfying in every way; it's well-written with a most unusual plot, right up to and including the last page, and peopled by characters you won't soon forget. I'm off to find more books by this author who was previously unknown to me. No longer, though.

Lawyers - let's go
This was an extremely fast paced book with infinite innuendoes. The suspect is revealed early on, but the mystery is at large until the very end. Ms Cannon appears to have an in depth knowledge of the LAPD workings and she skillfully uses this to her advantage. Warning - this is a hard book to put down!

An easy way to quit smoking?
I sure hope so! I've been trying for years and this is just crazy enough that I think it might work! I tried a few of the exercises and I could definitely feel myself slipping into hypnosis...

Something that works...wow, that's rare!
This is a book for people--like me--who don't like self-help books. I saw this one in the bookstore, and I couldn't resist it, because it said I could hypnotize myself with my eyes open. I'm really turned off by the Dr. Phils and the shmarmy new age type stuff...which is mostly hype with little substance. This book didn't waste my time. I started to put it to the test in about an hour after starting to read it. I felt myself going under hypnosis in only about a minute of reading the hypnotic script in it. Amazing. I'm using it to help me stay on my diet...and it's working!

I WAS a skeptic.
I highly recommend the book for those who want to know how and why people choose hypnosis to change their lives or an undersirable behavior.

Simply put, it worked for me after a little practice and a little rereading - had I initially followed the directions to a "T," it probably would have helped me to become more efficient sooner. In otherwords, when it says to find a "quiet place where you can be completely alone..." you really have to do so. That meant I had to put my cat out of the room and close the door in order to eliminate all distractions and keep my mind from wondering.

In my opinion, the best thing about the book was the various templates. They help you organize your thoughts on paper and systmatically achieve your goal.

I was impressed. Highly reccommend the book.

Great Main Idea, Too Much Other Stuff

Burklo's primary thesis is right on target, and generally well presented -- I would recommend this book to others, especially those uncertain about their own relation to Christianity. If he'd left well enough alone after the first two sections, I'd have probably given the book five stars (I consider three the default/average, and any more have to be earned, so by giving it four I'm still saying this is good stuff).

Unfortunately, this book does not leave well enough alone. Instead, Burklo adds a lot of unneeded baggage. While the primary thesis, that Christianity should be centered on Christ as God and God as love, and that doctrines and dogmas are not what maters, the book doesn't stop there. Instead, a lot of new doctrines are invented, in an apparent attempt to answer common questions in a way that would make religion more appealing to a newer generation. Unfortunately, I found these to be empty, unsatisfying, and contrived in many case; for example, there's a chapter that tries to reconcile science and religion (or separate them, there some double talk on this), but all he really accomplishes is showing a lack of real understanding of the subject at hand. Worse, he often take on an accusing tone toward those who prefer the more traditional views that is nearly as annoying as that of the fundamentalists whose view he is apposing. Basically, the book starts with a profound and important message, but then ends up spending most of the total text on unneeded baggage.

All things considered, though, this book has an important message to all Christians -- a call to return to the REAL fundamentals of Christian Love and the experience of God.

Courageous and enlightening!
This book is a clear account of an honest, faithful, soul searching journey into the heart of Christian faith. Jim Burklo shares the questions, concerns, and struggles that many of us face when we are authentically challenging our beliefs and striving to broaden our faith walk. Jim encourages readers to be willing to supercede mere reason rather than abandoning it, and gives the reader a solid strarting point for a transformative spiritual journey. Jim's book opens the way for both traditional Christian disciples and seekers from a variety of spiritual backgrounds to explore the Christ path with open minds and open hearts.

revealing
Rev. Burklo's book is revealing not only for Christians but for people who belongs to other religious traditions, showing deep spiritual insights of Christianism, and demonstrating how Chirstianism substantially overlaps with other faiths. Although the book deals with old discussions of spiritual Christianism, it puts them together in a very clear, elucidating and transparent fashion accesible for all readers. In my opinion, the final quality of the chapters is uneven, but most of them are very solid and the book as a whole invites for more than one reading. A fascinating and challeging chapter is "the theology of enough", which is more than theology, but ethics, ecology and spirituality together.
