Lesbian Polyfidelity: A Pleasure Guide for the Woman Whose Heart Is Open to Multiple, Concurrent Sexualoves, or How to Keep Non-Monogamy Safe, Sane,

Watch Out--This Book is a Bit Flighty
I hate this book. I wanted to love it. I wanted to be like a free-flowing Stevie Nicks kind of lesbian, with my scarves blowing in the wind, but no. This book just about scared me straight because if lesbian processing isn't bad enough being monogamous, being non-monogamous will cause an avalanche of insecurity and constant discussion. Yikes. Beware, because like I said: if lesbian sex at its worst wasn't still pretty good, this book would have scared me straight. (But genitals are always getting us into trouble no matter which direction you fling yourself into.) I'm bisexual and I still found this book flighty and indecisive. You can hear a vague "la la la" humming in the background as you read, so be careful.

good resource in spite of the silliness
I thought that this book had a lot of west coast hippie sensitivity and silliness... I would have liked something a bit more straightforward with fewer trippy explorations of feelings. However, there isn't a whole lot of stuff out there on lesbian polyfidelity - so its a good resource for women who are learning about this relationship style.

Trade in your therapist for this book.
Ever wonder where all the lesbian feminists have gone? Here is one answer. The author of Lesbian Polyfidelity dares to love outside the lines of monogamy and has generously provided suggestions for those who are trying to navigate honest love lives that respect each woman's differing needs.

One by one, West shreds objections to loving more than one woman like so much confetti to throw in the face of the love police. With humor and wisdom, she assures us that love is not an addiction any more than fresh air is an addiction; there is plenty of both to go around. "Love is life affirming, generous, powerful, brave, and probably the most nourishing thing on this sad earth."

Is having more than one lover a psychopathology? The author tells us to avoid any psychotherapist who presents monogamy as the only healthy option.

While rewarding, polyfidelity offers its own challenges and this book provides suggestions for dealing with jealousy and setting personal boundaries. Along with her spiritual view of life, the author throws in a few breakfast recipes, reminding us to have healthy food around the house to sustain the emotional and physical energy required for relationships.

I was fortunate to have bought Lesbian Polyfidelity on line without having seen the cover. Though the cover is delightful -- a cartoon-like drawing of many cavorting nude women of various skin tones -- I might easily have judged this book by it and never picked it up, assuming that lesbian polyfidelity meant group sex or orgies (it doesn't), which interest me not at all. Instead, the book is about lesbian couples who want more fulfilling love lives but do not want to break up, and single women who enjoy variety.

This book is sex positive, love-positive, life-positive and lesbian-positive. Though skeptical about monogamy, it prescribes no one way to live or love, respecting the choices of women interested in no sex and those who want a lot. "Surely 'sexual liberation' also means the freedom to refrain from sex as we know it..." West writes.

Whether or not you ever explore a polyfidelitous life, this book provides an entertaining critique of our culture's assumptions about what is normal and possible.

Learning to Use Statistical Tests in Psychology (Open Guides to Psychology)

Fruitless attempt to circumvent statistical theory
This book has one single aim: to help students select the appropriate test for experimental designs (as stated in the preface). It is a basic book for real "beginners" and covers introduction to experimental design, non-parametric tests and parametric tests, including 51 exercises and statistical tables. It takes the student on a very practical tour finally reaching one- and two-way ANOVA, repeated measures and mixed model. The theoretical explanations are extremely sparse and nothing is mentioned about fundamental statistical concepts like sampling distributions, assumptions or the linear model. The explanation of the function of parameters and statistical inference is extremely thin. There is an obvious risk that this book leaves the student very ill prepared for further studies in statistics. Any interested reader is recommended to compare the approach taken in this book to the deeper perspective in books by e.g. Pagano, R.R. or Howell, R.D.

Very good for those familiar with stats, but needing help!
This book is ideal for researchers who are familiar with statistical procedures but have problems choosing which one to use etc.

Open house: Closed book.
Disappointing! I purchased a number of books along the lines of this book for a reference library and this was the only one that I did not want to keep. It just seemed to miss the point. Everything in this book had been covered so much better in my other purchases. There was nothing original and inspiring that made me feel this was a book to keep. To add to my disappointment the store management equated the return of this book like requesting my money back after reading a novel and extracting the gist. They had no concept of what it means to build a reference source. It's not like seeing a bad movie and requesting a refund after sitting through it which is the way they put it to me.

Open House: Unbound Space and the Modern Dwelling
Heavy on pictures and short on text, this is a quirky collection of houses that take the modern obsession with openness to one or another extreme. Familiar examples like Philip Johnson's Glass House and Shigeru Ban's Wall-less house --with its toilet and tub sitting out in full view--are juxtaposed with some interiors that feel confined and a couple of blue-sky projects that seem almost claustrophobic. However, as surveys of contemporary architecture become ever more predictable, a book as eccentric as this is welcome. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

No substance-not self-help
I have also attended a seminar taught by this author. Neither it nor any of his books, including this one were authentic. Yes, he has studied with many masters, and believes himself to be one, but he is far from that. Much of what he writes and says are regurgitations of the thoughts of others. Unfortunately this is yet another one of his books where the title does not fit the content. Which is misleading. Your money is much better spent elsewhere. He does manage to brainwash (I've seen it done) and manipulate some to becoming devout followers. (almost cult-like?) Beware.

This book was a waste of my time and money
Poorly written, this book continues in Dr.? Warter's tradition of new age mumbo jumbo masquerading as a self help book. Lot's of words, no substance. Aside from needing to take some writing lessons, this guy would benefit from some serious study of his subject matter.

What The Book means to Me
I am a student of Carlos Warter, MD, PhD, in his workshops. I have experienced first hand the exercises in this book and the unbounded wisdom that is integrated with them. They are very powerful since Dr. Warter has not only learned from many of the great spiritual masters of the world, but is one. The teachings have brought me to an icredible awareness of myself and deep compassion for others. He offers a message that incorporates modern day psychology and the wisdom of the ages. This book is highly recommended. I am grateful for the experience of these exercises and knowledge printed simply yet so profoundly in these pages.

Open Road's Costa Rica Guide
Published in Paperback by Open Road Pub (May, 1998)

Paul Glassman's Costa Rica Guide is an excellent, thorough, in-depth travel guide to Costa Rica, supplying salient details on the green turtles of Tortugeuro, the volcanic peaks of Irazú, and the lovely beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula, plus all the various ecotours among hundreds of bird and butterfly species and thousands of plants and insects, in habitats ranging from lowland jungle to cloud forest. With river rafting, scuba diving, and sport fishing (oceanic as well as lake and mountain stream), horseback riding, windsurfing, and the citified pleasures of San José, it's small wonder so many visitors to Costa Rica get hooked on the place, not just for annual vacations, but for retirement as well. Glassman clearly knows the country well, and along with comprehensive coverage of hotels (from luxury beachfront cabanas to budget mountainside B & Bs), restaurants (from French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Lebanese options to Costa Rican specialties like gallo pinto, casado, and plátanos fritos), and activities (rafting and spelunking to bird watching and exploring the national parks), Glassman provides a wide array of candid information--on topics as diverse as retirement, pickpocket precautions, schooling options, paying off the cops, and, most importantly, the various courses and institutions that offer to teach you Spanish. Insightful, reliable, and full of interesting asides, Glassman's book is practical and easy to use--a quality guide to Costa Rica. --Stephanie Gold

This is old material
Hi, I'm Paul Glassman, the author of the original and authorized Costa Rica Guide. Though this book uses my name, it consists entirely of outdated material.

Problems with details
Each summer I go to Costa Rica with a group of students to do a course in Sustainable Development. As a consequence I collect Costa Rican guidebooks. The previous guide by this author was good and I looked forward to this one.

This one was a bit of a disappointment. The guide presents a good straight forward description of Costa Rica and is still a useful tool for travellers.

Where this book suffers is in the details. I first came aware of this when I was trying to use it in Monteverde and I found out that there were many errors in the map presented. I eventually learned that the map presented things as they were in arly 1997. This is a real problem for a guide published in 2000 especially since there are guides published in 1999 that have more up to date maps than this one.

The discussion of the Southern Talamanca Coast also suffers. Cahuita is discussed in greater detail than Puerto Viejo even though the latter has become the bigger tourist destination in the past 5 years. Once again, the layout of this book seems to be based on what existed in 1996-97 rather than what exists today.

Lack of detailed, useful information also haunts the ArenalVolcano/La Fortuna disussions.

In summary, Paul Glassman's Costa Rica Guide covers the basics but does not provide the type of helpful detail that many other guides provide. Normally the more recently a guide is published, the more useful it is. However in this case, there are guides published in 1999 and even 1998 that contain more useful and sometimes more up to date information than this year 2000 publication.

Great Book
Hi,

I am working at Ilisa Language Instute in Costa Rica, San Jose and I want to say that this book helps us a lot to give our students helpfull information about getting around in Costa Rica. Thanks!

About Chinese Women (Open Forum)

Authors: Julia Kristeva and Anita Barrows

Orientalism
Kristeva's early masterpiece that helped to solidify her reputation in the early 70s as a masterly leftist feminist can now be reread as indicative of the Orientalism of the Paris of the 1970s in which Roland Barthes, Jacques Lacan, Philippe Sollers, and many others championed Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution. This revolution of the Parisian letters of the 1970s has now become a powerful wing of what is euphemistically called Cultural Studies, but which is actually a branch of Mao's Cultural Revolution, being played out today in almost every institution of higher education in America.

This book is the purest Orientalism of the kind that Edward Said complains about. She actually argues that because the future is so bright after the Cultural Revolution that the possibilities are unlimited.

It shows the left's prophetic powers in retrospect.

Music only
I didn't realize this was a music only tape. I only listened to it once, and returned it. It wasn't what I was looking for at all. I find this brand to be very "new age", which I'm just not into, and whether it's the tapes which are all music, or the tapes with words and music, I just can't get into it because of the "new age" feel to it.

New book....outdated information
Pediatric Dentists are battling for early visits to prevent and detect problems with early childhood caries. The rugrats have not yet received this message. The book suggests that the time for the first visit is once all primary teeth are erupted. That would mean ca. 3 years of age which seems to match with Angelica and Susie's age. The "little kids" have some erupted teeth (Chuckie and the twins), but they are told that they are too young to see the dentist - The chance to include anticipatory guidance and discuss baby bottle caries is clearly missed. Why does a dentist have to be bald and look this serious? At least x-rays are taken and some prevention is discussed.
