Pedestrian and poorly written
Anyone wishing to discover Mexican cuisine should look elsewhere. Better recipes are in many other books (Diana Kennedy, Bayless, the Oaxaca book). The writing is full of cliches and the shopping and dining "tips" in Mexico were worthless. I'm very sorry I bought it! Actually, the dumbed-down recipes can be handy if you're in a rush.

Delightful and Authentic Regional Guide to Mexican Cooking
This is a very fine collection of unpretentious, delicious recipes - wonderful food as cooked by real Mexicans. The descriptions of local markets and fondas are rendered with affection, humor and a healthy dose of common sense. In short, a book that should be in the collection of every Mexican cooking aficionado.

Steve Sando is a Moron!
This book rocks! I don't know if Mr. Sando is used to Taco Bell or what? The food I have made form this book has all been superb. The flavor is authentic. Some of the recipies are simple and some quite involved! Not every recipe needs a list of 20+ ingredients and 3 pages of instructions to be wonderfully flavorful. The many types of moles are some of the best I have ever had. Anyone who looks in cookbooks for travel tips is delusional. Great cookbook!

More of a Center Book
This book was not as helpful as I really thought it was going to be. I am opening a daycare in my home and this books speaks quite abit about how to run your own daycare "Center". She talks about finding space, getting a loan, buying "Center" equipment. So if you are going to open your own "Center" then its great - but for all of you who are getting your licence to run it out of your home - try something else - especially for the price of the book ! YIKES!

Great Reading
Great Book! It was easy to read and I especially enjoyed the lessons learned from child care professionals referenced throughout the book. Provided practical knowledge on everything from up-start, grand opening to dealing with difficult situations like child abuse. Also get Profitable Child Care by Nan Howkins

Great book with HELPFUL advice
My mom, sister in law and I are in the process of opening our own daycare center--we find that this book is very helpful-with suggestions on where to get a buisness loan, to how to look for the perfect location to setting up the center itself, it can't be beat. We know nothing about getting a buisness started but we love children and this book reinforced our desire to take the leap into the unknown.
Absolutely wonderful resource!

Very good book, if you want to open a resume production biz.
Ms. Melink writes well and includes much information, however it seems geared toward the resume business, vs. a well-rounded secretarial service. The information on what to charge clients is well written and informative.

Definitely Worth a Read!
Ms. Melnik has done an excellent job in writing this book. She provides comprehensive information on all aspects of starting your own secretarial service. She assume's the reader is at the very beginnin stages of planning and does a great job going through the entire process, one step at a time!

The only thing I wish there was more information on was operating this business from an internet standpoint.

A Must Have!
Jan's book is a must have for anyone seeking to start a home-based secretarial (virtual assistance) business. Her book is full of wonderful advice -- she even shares with her readers the actual forms she uses in her own business. This book is the "Virtual Assistant's" bible!

A good introduction to Open Inventor
This book gives a good overview of how to use Open Inventor to depict three-dimensional objects and scenes. To my knowledge, this is the only introductory book on Open Inventor. Since there are no tutorial books on Open Inventor, this is where many people start when they want to use the language.

This book describes the capabilities and features of Open Inventor and gives brief examples, often with code. By the end of the book, you have a good idea of what Open Inventor can do and what parts of the language you would use for each feature. Unfortunately, many of the descriptions leave much to be desired. The book does not go into detail on how to use any feature. Many descriptions are given a light, cursory treatment.

If your goal is to start programming in Open Inventor, you will find many omissions. You will need to compensate for this by writing test cases and experimental code. You will also need to purchase The Open Inventor C++ Reference Manual, which will fill in many of the gaps in this book.

If, however, your goal is to get an understanding of what Open Inventor is, this book is perfect.

good book
I find that the general concepts presented in this book are still valid, even several years after its publication. Most of the commercial graphics software out there follows similar programming architectures and this book covers these fairly well.

However, you need to read the Open Inventor Toolmaker book to extend your Open Inventor Library distribution by adding more nodes/actions/engines, it also gives a much more in depth understanding. The real power of this library is that you can extend it fairly easily.

For the reference manual book for detailed specs about functions or callback methods, they are all available in the online manual pages now which are distributed freely by SGI since August of 2000.

I like the Book
I've concluded that I like the Inventor Mentor Book. I've used the book to teach open inventor to Senior University students. I worked with students to demonstrate a comprehensive set of programs viewable at WSU Virtual Worlds. WSU Virtual Worlds illustrates a more comprehensive code explaination. If you have questions on concepts in the book, email me. Heres what we were able to accomplish: Cylinder in trackball with Examiner Widget, Orthographic Camera and explainations of Perspective Camera, Space station w/ Camera and Point Light, Space station w/ Copper Material, Space station w/ Text, Grids (callbacks to OpenGL Code), applying Texture maps, B-Spline, using the Elapsed-Time Engine, Two Time Counters, Keyboard Events (this was very challenging to learn), Sensors, Draggers, nurb surface figure (cool technology), Walking Figure, skeleton and nurb surface skin (the best subject of the book: node kits), Examiner Widget, Water Molecule with Draggers and Timer Sensors.

Maybe I'm just new to Buk, but its just ok
This book had some intersting stuff and it was better in the beginning than in the end. This is the first thing i've ever read by him and i know some people who are really into his poetry, so that's why I picked up one of them from the library. Most of it .... Every once in a while a good poem comes up but most of it is choppy and reptitive and boring. I should have started with a different one.

Dear publisher- a small effort please!
Since this is a posthumous volume of poems I would expect some explanations or introduction from the publisher or someone else, like was this book prepared by Bukowski at the time of his death, if not why were these poems put in and not the others, when were the poems written or published, it's not enough to say between 1970 and 1990... etc...

As for the poems, Bukowski is always great, but I wouldnt recommend this book to Buk's beginner's, they should start by "War All the time" or "The days run away ...", "Septuagenarian stew" and some others before buying this one. It's more for completists, and I guess there are a few of us out there in the wilderness.

not one word wasted
It's not just the sorry world his poetry echoes, but the massive machinery of Bukowski's technique that amazes. How spare, how cutting his line divisions, how they leave you gaping in mid-air. The man obviously studied as well as passively listened to the music he wrote about; it measures his lines and puts his sounds in invisibly proper order.

The book is a collection of character sketches in a world where ignobility wins trophies and troubles keep them polished and best of all it comes with the half-ring of a whiskey-glass stain on the rear cover.

An Open Book - Closed Mind
After reading my way thru almost half of this book, could not take any more. I am a life long Lorain resident, growing up in the same time frame that the author did and also attending the same high school. Although the author does write very well, it would behoove him to check his so-called facts, several of the places he mentions have never existed in Lorain and his skewed perceptions of growing up in the city are full of fabrications. How sad that he choose to use his talent in writing such a shoddy book, certainly not something I choose to have on my bookshelves nor recommend to others. Shame on this author!

an open book
I love the book! The book is very special and has a place in my heart. My favorite part of the book is how Dirda makes fun of his middle pesky sister Pamela. i laughed historically at the part. i also like how toward of the end od the book Dirda's hormones begin to blossom. Overall i feel that it is an awesome book and should be read and shared with families all over the world.

Dirda Fan
I've only read the first two chapters, but so far I am laughing myself silly. The book is hilarious.

not so good.
Much is made of dyson's intellectual prowess; this just goes to show you that all things are relative. There are organisms shuffling down the street to whom dyson's intellect would, one assumes, seem impressive. But that don't necessarily make it so. You may, at some point, have heard the term pinhead. The term signifies that the owner of such a head has a tiny little brain, a "peabrain" if you will. This, in a nutshell, is dyson. He meanders around offering weak commentary and observation that appeals chiefly to the MTV and BET crowd. This is to say, he offers nothing of value other than allowing Penn to make their quota. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs.

Controversial, Articulate, Unapologetic
Open Mike is a book that I picked up on accident and I thnak whatever angel was sitting on my shoulder that day. I had never been blessed enough to have been exposed to Dyson before and I was quite surprise about what I found. This man is BAD. He has the same theoretical and intellectual presence as Malcom, Martin, Carmichael, etc. In Open Mike, a series of interviews Dyson gave, I found that I was surprise that anyone could speak this way from the hip. I often wondered if he'd practiced what he had to say. Then I heard him speak at the State of the Black Chruch conference in Detroit, MI 2003. He's for real.

Open Mike is an honest and revealing account of Dyson's life, his thoughts, and the controversies that he's started. No one is safe from this man 's tongue---no one. Pick it up and be enlightened.

Open Mic is Dyson's answer to the esoteric!!!
As a mentee of Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, I can certainly attest to his rhetorical genius, his intellectual compassion, his scholarly depth and his cerebral authority on a wide range of cultural, philosophical and theoretical themes. But as it occurs, many acadamicians (i.e. Adolph Reed) have questioned his scholarship, and even if he is a serious intellectual, suggesting that his writing tends to gravitate toward petty motives that deal with popular culture and the commercialization of societal issues. Nevermind that one of the most noted philosophers, Antonio Gramsci proposed the notion of the "organic intellectual" as one who could arise from the people but never become so esoterically connected to some ebony or ivory academy. That is Dyson--the organic intellectual--and we Dysonians appreciate him as a defining intellectual acrobat regardless of the commentaries put out by PEDANTIC scholars who resist mainstream culture, pretty much because they, themselves, fail to identify with it.

But still, Dyson answers his critics with Open Mike, a scholarly enterprise of the highest order. The book is a collection of conversations on philosophy, race, sex, culture and religion, that definitively evinces the "seriousness" of Dyson's scholarship. Dyson effortlessly registers his deepening intellectual and moral convictions on every subject from poststructuralist theory to the polyrhythmic structures of African American musical traditions and from Nietzsche's view of God to the prism through with Nas analyzed black social plight.

As Mark Anthony Neal stated in the foreword, "Open Mike is a critical beat-down!" I recommend that this scholarly contribution be digested by every intellect for its complex exploration into the various layers and dimensions of black radical discourse, politics and ethics. And I even further, invite all general readers to add this book to their reading appetite, as Dyson's consistent flow and vivid portrayals are sure to delight your thirst for an impassioned discussion of the social dynamics that affect us all.

This book isn't actually about having an open mind
I bought this book because it had a great title. I would love to read a book about how to maintain an open mind while experiencing something new (or old, for that matter). Unfortunately, this book is not about having an open mind. Rather, Dr. Markova is a lecturer and speaker who has a following for her way of thinking (like some of the self-help gurus that we are all familiar with), and this book describes her "program". There does not seem to be anything wrong with her program, but my opinion is that a book titled "The Open Mind" should be about how to handle new experiences with integrity and vision. I did not get the impression that was what she was writing about. This a well written book, but is essentially a philosophical book by a sound thinker. The problem is that it is mostly of a testimonial nature, not rigorous by any means. If you want a book that focuses on the best way to maintain an open mind, this does not make the grade.

Brilliant theory, comprehensively written
Dr. Markova's learning process ideas have vastly altered the way I view, work with, and relate to others. While acknowledging that people's minds work differently (and beautifully in their respective ways), she has made it clear that no two people are fated to lock horns! This book provides practical tips on building and maintaining a relationship with someone whose learning pattern is different from one's own.

I appreciate her brevity, also. It's a simple theory, though an exceptional one. But Markova doesn't embellish her ideas, slapping wordy technical terms on everything. These concepts speak for themselves. She gives further insight where it's needed, but mostly the reader is allowed to make his/her own interpretations. This is not heavy reading, (easily digestible for a college freshman such as myself!) but enlightening nonetheless.

One of the most profound influences in my life
From professional colleagues to the family members who drive me crazy to my spouse, this book has truly changed the way I relate to people. Through gaining an understanding of how people communicate--how we all have our own unique mind--I now understand how I can most effectively listen to others, speak my heart and connect with people on their terms. Most importantly, I understand my own particular quirks and needs (and realize they're not "quirks" but simply how my mind processes, etc.) and I cherish those qualities in myself--and work with them--instead of trying to change them to fit another way of thinking. This book has been instrumental in helping me take charge of the interactions I have in my life, and it has been one of the most profound influences of my adult relationship life.

Saints and Madmen: Psychiatry Opens Its Doors to Spirituality

Many people who experience psychotic episodes have extreme spiritual encounters: for one person, it may be a sense of a tree's spirit speaking its truth aloud; for others, it could be the sensation of energy beaming from their bodies and communicating with dolphins on a far-off coast. Modern psychiatry usually categorizes these visions as evidence of psychosis, to be treated with antipsychotic medication. But what if these visions were actually extensions of legitimate spiritual encounters or glimpses into the deeper dimensions of the soul?

Author Russell Shorto (Gospel Truth) dares to ask these questions. He even offers evidence of a new movement in psychiatry, in which established doctors are assuming a more holistic approach to psychotic episodes and taking the patient's soul into account. This is not a cavalier dismissal of all that can be gained from appropriate diagnoses of (and medications for) mental illness; rather, it is an impressively researched argument for opening up to the idea of spiritual visions. Citing extensive research and numerous case studies, Shorto helps readers consider the possibility that grandiose spiritual visions aren't necessarily symptoms of mental illness. --Gail Hudson

TOO FEW SAINTS AND MADMEN
While this book had the noblest of intentions, it dwelt too often on the politics of American Psychiatry and not enough on the actual Saints and Madmen. Where the author did cover accounts of psychotic/mystical experiences - he handled them extremely well - it is a pity he lost his focus.

A review by a Shaman
I found this book very interesting. Speaking as the world's first post-op transsexual Two-Spirit Shaman and Chi Gung master, I am drawn to this subject since it is who I am and what I do. In fact, I have been this way since a near-death incident at the age of 5 just as have so many others that are covered in this book. The book shows that throughout history there have been those who have experienced things on the edge of most people's reality. It's easy to scoff, but when you experience it yourself, you realize that there is a lot more out there than anyone imagines.

Lily of the Valley Carnie, author of Chi Gung: Chinese Healing, Energy, and Natural Magick

Thought provoking and informative
Mind stretching introduction to the field of spirituality and psychiatry. Entertaining case histories. Definitely worth the read for those interested in mind/body or spiritual healing.

Hurricane: Open Seas, 1844

poor book
This was the most boring book I have ever read. The author spent way too much time on details and not enought on interesting stuff! My son had to use this book for a book report where he had to pick out 10 important details and find objects to help describe them. This was the most difficult task ever. All we could come up with was a cat, a harpoon, a whale a boat and oil!

Horrible.

A good Survival book!
This story is about Rebecca Whittier, the daughter of the captain of the Vigilance-a whaling boat hunting for whales in 1844. Rebecca wishes she was back home in New Bedford, with her friend and cousin. John Lowe is a free African American about Rebecca's age. John was indentured by his father to work on the Vigilance, but John hates the work. When a sudden hurricane hits the Vigilance and the lifeboats leave without them, Rebecca and John must help each other to survive the violent winds and waves. I think the other Survival books were better than this one. They spent too much time describing the whaling process and not enough time during the hurricane. It was still a better-than-average book, though.

This book was great!!
I have read the book of SURVIVAL! HURRICANE.
I thought that it was the BEST survival book that I have read in a long time. This is such a good book that I couldn't put it down once I started it. After I read the first few pages I was into it right away. That was when I became a good fan of the survival books. Kathleen Duey and K. A. Bale are one of the best adventure writers that I have read about.
