Beautiful Photos and Informative Descriptions
This book is a huge step up from the Heacock & Johnson 5000 Open Salts. The photography is outstanding and the descriptions are informative with current pricing. The authors did a wonderful job of publishing a reference book for open salt collectors which complements the H&J but focuses on higher end salts and includes very little duplication from those in the H&J. This book was long overdue for the serious open salt collector. Thanks for all the hard work to make it happen.

Exceptional Beauty and Information
I must agree with the previous "Raves" about this book. I do feel that the new collector can benefit from it also - If I had been aware of such examples of open salts and the information given in this book - perhaps I would not have passed up some finer pieces in the beginning or made some of the mistakes in my early purchases. I have been a basic pattern piece collector but this book has kindled new interests in my collecting desires. I would strongly suggest this book be owned by all Open Salt Collectors - new or seasoned!!!

Newest book in field of salt collecting
This book is a "must have" for long time collectors. For new collectors, it might be a bit expensive but well worth looking at for the information and comprehensive categories of open salt collecting. The photographs of salts and the price and rarity guide beneath each set of pictures is invaluable. Many books on open salt collecting are out of print or have outdated prices. This book is a wonderful feast for the eyes and a great deal of time and effort went into the gathering and photographing of collector's salts.

Very timely and patriotic
This is a wonderful book -- the fictional account of young German girl becoming truly American. Her story is surrounded by historically accurate events during the World War II era. Meta offers great insights about war, love, freedom, family, and faith. This would also be a great book for teens who can relate to Meta's feelings -- and gain an more personal appreciation of that period in history.
It will leave you feeling very patriotic -- with a renewed thankfulness for the windows of opportunity that have as Americans in the United States, one nation under God.

Great book
I grew up in Europe and I can identify my experience coming to the US with Meta. I would strongly recommend this book for new comers to this country. The story was captivating, emotional and close to reality for a lot of new immigrants.

A Fascinating Peek into the Immigrant Experience
A fictional biography with a heart, A Window Opens touches the soul. It is the engaging account of one family's immigrant experience. When the Morgenstern family comes to America to escape the changes in their native Germany, young Meta Morgentstern decides to keep a journal. Through the entries in Meta's journal, the reader learns not only about the events that happen in the Morgenstern family's new American life, but what is happening overseas in their homeland as well. Family hardships, joys, customs, and culture paint the backdrop for the story of one girl's struggle to become American while not forgetting her German roots. A. M. Philyaw has done a masterful job of using characterization and historical detail to enrich the story of Meta's American experience. A nation of immigrants, we too easily forget the hardships and sacrifices of the generations who came before. A Window Opens offers the opportunity to journey in the moccasins of those, no matter the country or culture of origin, whose bravery and struggle paid for many of the freedoms we enjoy today.

LEARN FROM A LIVING MASTER!!!!
THIS BOOK IS MOST EXCELLENT ESPECIALLY IF USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ANTHONY RYDER'S BOOK. I'VE BEEN DRAWING ALL MY LIFE, AND NOW I FEEL I'VE JUST BEGUN MY JOURNEY TO BECOME AN EXCELLENT DRAUGHTSMAN!!! BRAVO, TED! BRAVO, TONY!

You need this book
If you were stripped of every luxury of life, and had to exile yourself to an abandoned island with only the essentials for human existence, you'd think of things like food, water, and shelter. Likewise, if I ever had to get rid of every book in my how-to art library except for the ones that I would absolutely shrivel up and blow away without, this book would remain on my shelf along with Richard Schmid's "Alla Prima" and "Life Drawing in Charcoal" by Douglas Graves. These three are my food, water and shelter for surviving as a serious art student.

This book puts a greater emphasis on the artist's focus and state of mind than it does on technique.. Sound a little "Zen-like?" It is, in a lot of ways, but "you will draw what the mind sees" until you learn to draw what the eye sees. "The problem," Jacobs writes, "is not that we don't see well enough but that we do not draw what we see. We draw what we think." This is coming from a man whose drawings look like the masterpieces of da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Better listen to him.

While developing your mental-visual muscles, Jacobs goes into symmetry, balance, and light. But only after opening your eyes to what you see before you so your art won't be contaminated from an image file in your brain.

Each topic is broken down into bite-sized segments--you can literally read a topic and digest it in 5 minutes or less. Or, if you want to sit down for the full meal, read and absorb several topics, review some you've read before, and skip ahead to some other stuff you found in the index. Then go draw. You'll be flexing art muscles you never knew you had. And you will be very pleased with your results.

ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS ON DRAWING EVER WRITTEN
I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOKS YOU HAVE READ ON DRAWING BEFORE BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS ON DRAWING EVER WRITTEN. ANOTHER EXCELLENT BOOK IS BY HIS FORMER STUDENT ANTHONY RYDER ENTITLED THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO FIGURE DRAWING. EACH IS INCREDIBLY DETAILED IN ITS DESCRIPTIONS ON TECHNIQUE AS WELL AS THE LEVEL OF ATTENTION AND CARE REQUIRED TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL DRAWINGS. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO HAVE A CAREER IN REPRESENTATIONAL ART YOU HAVE GOT TO READ AT LEAST ONE OF, IF NOT BOTH THESE BOOKS. OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY "MORE MONEY" FOR A GUIDE TO DRAWING BY MARCUS MANDELOWITZ WHICH SAYS THE SAME THINGS, IT JUST TAKES LONGER TO SAY THEM AND MAKES YOU PAY MORE FOR IT. ANY OTHER BOOK IS PROBOBLY NOT WORTH BUYING.

Not kind for the one who want to know in details.
What this book covers are mainly based on the distribution of that of Red Hat. Has plenty of pages and makes one feel that this may contain essential articles though explanations are in fact too short for practically using what's written there. I think this is a book to give any ideas only as a tip and not by a full description. One may need to refer to another book for figuring out what this book was saying. Not kind for the one who want to know in details.

Good for reference but definitely not for learners
After going through lots of other Linux books, finally found one which has everything except how to install Linux on your computer.

It's a quick and easy way to go around your way while administrating Linux machine provided you have some familiarity with the operating system environment.

The book gives you solutions and answers to lots of common (and uncommon, and sometimes too simple to be worth mentioning in any other book) problems and questions. The book is ordered according to topics and each topic contains related questions and answers. Each question also has reference to other possible questions. For example, in installing a printer, a question such as 'How to connect to Windows printer from Linux' refers to 'How to install printer on Linux and access it from Windows'.

Very useful for someone who is actually working with Linux and need to refer to a book every now and then for quick answers, but definitely not for someone who is just starting to learn Linux administration or hoping to learn it by using this book.

MARVELOUS BOOK!!!
The combination of very well-written, clear theoretical material and "how to" sections is excellent, leaving all published competitors far behind in the dust. Spectrum and profoundness of covered material is unprecedented. I am an undergraduate computer science student and didn't buy this book for some specific task, just to enlighten myself more in the field, and found a lot of new knowledge. But after graduation, on my first day on the job this book will be in my briefcase: it can save me a lot of effort. "Linux System Administration Black Book" is really great for everyone: from guys who barely know how to spell "kernel" to experienced, sometimes arrogant gurus.

Be a Tourist, Not a Traveler
If the ratings allowed, I would evaluate this book as 3 1/2***. Comparing this with Open Road for the traveler, my rating must stand. There are other books that I will put in second and third place (this in fourth). However, comparing these with Fodor and the like, I would place this at the top. The question becomes one of deciding who the book really serves. While labeled as being for the "traveler," one who moves around and stays in places for short or long times usually alone or in a small group, I see this book as fine for the "tourist," one who comes to visit a country, see a few big cities and sites, often with n an organized group or structured itinerary.

The tourist doesn't have to be concerned about what to do in an emergency in a given community. The tourist is more interested in learning who to file a complaint in case something goes wrong in a community or with any of its merchants or features. For example look at the information on Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, on the east coast of China across from Taiwan. There is no population or temperature data at the start of this section(P. 317). There are no estimated prices to take a bus, train or plane to Hong Kong, Xiamen or Shanghai. There is a brief section identifying a few major hotels and two restaurants outside of the hotels in Fuzhou. But, for excursions and day trips there is more information than many of the other books with which this is being compared. In the "Practical Information" section (Pp. 322-323), there are five travel services identified, a place for tourists to file complaints and a tourist hotline. Other books focusing more on travelers would include practical information on police, health care facilities, postal services and media. Fuzhou is a city gaining more importance due to location and the expansion of the Hong Kong/Canton trading areas.

Fuzhou is listed in Chapter 16, Pp. 317-420 "EAST CHINA." This chapter includes many other cities such as Nanjing, Wuxi and Suzhou. But, there is no separate map for East China. There are individual maps for Nanjing (5.5 million) and Qingdao (2 million) but no other cities. Also some of the cities listed cannot be found on the overall China map, even if over one million people live in them.

Chapter 15 "SHANGHAI" on Pp. 275-316 covers China's second or third most populated city, depending if Hong Kong is counted (not by this author). The chapter presents lots of helpful information on hotels, places to eat by cuisine type, night life and shopping. There is also 1 1/2 pages devoted to excursions outside of Shanghai. But, Shanghai is such an exciting, growing city that one can stay in it for a while. "Shanghai is the best city to shop in China outside of Hong Kong for selection and quality, and time should be set aside here to shop if interested" (P. 308). There is a short "Sidebar" on P. 304 "FOLLOW PRESIDENT CLINTON'S SHANGHAI ITINERARY." The code of the Shanghai map on P. 289 does not show locations of the Shanghai Library, General Motors Plant or Portman Hotel (585 rooms were used by the group).

There are good bits of information on China but I could not find a list of Chinese and English words. Rely on a guide and take a small Chinese/English dictionary.

China is a safe, fascinating country. This book is enjoyable, especially for tourists. The Center for Disease Control and author recommends some shots that should be taken. ...END

More than I can absorb
As I get ready for a summer trip to China, there are many practical things I wanted to know about. What to expect in a Chinese toilet for example. What to shop for where. And a mydrid of other questions. I've never been to the east and I had no idea what I might be putting myself in for. Therefore, I needed the information this book has to offer. I won't really be going to the big tourist places and this book offered much reasonable advice on what to expect where. And it covers almost any area or city one might reasonable expect to go to. It (or pertenent parts) will definitely be in my pack when I leave.

Kept this with me in China
Although things are changing so fast in China that no book can be absolutely up to date, this one is excellent. Before going on a 12 day (June 25-July 6, 2001) China tour I spent over $100 on guide books. This one went with me.

Tips about what to do & watch out for in everything from hotels, touring, tipping, eating etc. were good, valid, clear and - most importantly - easy to find in the book when you're in a hurry on a crowded street in Beijing.

While some other books simply tell you to beware of rip offs - with cab drivers for example, this book goes on to tell you what you should expect to pay.

There are also small history sections for lots of key cities. Although I was on a hand held tour for 12 days, I kept this book in my carryon wherever I went - plane, ship, or bus!

Yummy
This collection of stories was an amazing celebration of womanhood, including stories of love, life, and tragedy. This compilation covers all the bases of a woman's life from poverty and love in the heart-wrenching story "Christmas in the Silver Egg" to the humorous "I'll Never Understand my Wife," which deals with marriage. A Second Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul is satisfying, refreshing, and warmhearted.

Great Stories for MOMS!
There are several books that enlighten you, and this is surely one of them. Then there are books that change you, books that you take with you for the rest of your life, and these you must share with fellow seekers. These are the books that have unconditionally inspired me to be a better person and that I recommend to anyone searching for inspiration. The first is "The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho" this book is all about a shepherd trying to find his treasure. In the end he realizes his treasure was the journey, the people he met, the souls that touched him(How beautiful!) The second is "Siddhartha by Herman Hesse" A brilliant tale of a man who gives up everything for a journey of enlightenment. On his journey he meets the Buddha, he meets ascetics, and he meets his...(I wont spoil it for you). The last one is for kids, but it is still beautiful. "The Butterfly by Jay Singh" is a tale about a caterpillar in search of her smile! One day this caterpillar realizes she can no longer smile anymore because she is living an inauthentic life. She musters the courage to leave the Silk Palace to find her smile and discovers a whole new world that was hidden from her. Buy them, read them, be inspired!

Excellent
I know you'll like this. It has helped and inspired me.

A Match Made in Heaven
Readers will find the perfect match indeed in Michelle Monkou's debut novel, "Open Your Heart". Monkou joins Shelly Bishop and Justin Thornton, two people with tragic pasts who desperately desire love.

Shelly, a nurse has been strongly affected by an attempted date rape. She spends her time volunteering at a local rape crisis center and mentoring her troubled niece. Justin has inherited the CEO position at the family owned Hopetown Savings Bank. Like Shelly, Justin harbors a burdensome past. His adulterous wife asked for his forgiveness seconds before she dies. Unable to forgive her, Justin spends his days engrossed in the bank's operations.

Justin's terminally ill father, Phillip Thornton, hires Shelly as his private nurse. Day by day, Shelly and Justin draw closer to each other, slowly trusting with their hearts again. Unfortunately, their relationship becomes threatened by a common enemy.

Once the reader begins reading this book, it will not be easy to put it down. Shelly and Justin's relationship goes up and down as they learn to trust and reveal buried insecurities. The novel's concluding chapters will no doubt draw emotions and tears! This debut is a great romantic read!

Open Your Heart, You'll Enjoy This Book!
Shelly Bishop is still grappling to forget the pain inflicted upon her by an old flame, Toby Gillis. Justin Thornton is attracted to the strong, courageous woman, however, he's been burned by women before, and wonders if Shelly is after his money. Toby Gillis wants to take over Justin's family bank, using his backstabbing tactics. Toby approachs Shelly again, and she finally finds the strength to overcome her fears of her attacker. Justin executes a plan to bring Toby Gillis down, wanting to make Toby suffer for all the wrongs he's inflicted upon Shelly and his family business. While Shelly cares for her elderly ill patient, Justin's father, she develops a loving relationship with the old man, and Shelly and Justin finally discover his plan to bring the two of them together.

This book was great! It shows how a young courageous woman overcame her fears, and learned to open her heart and love again! This is an exciting first novel from Ms. Monkou, and I look forward to reading her next book!

Open Your Heart
Wonderful! Exceptional story that will raise your spirits and touch your heart.

Doesn't live up to the name
After receiving Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, I read it cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed it. Since then, I became a big Chicken Soup fan and bought a few other books. Among them I recommend (other than the above) Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul and the original Chicken Soup book. I feel bad not highly recommending this book either, but I felt utterly disappointed after purchasing this book and really wanted a refund, unfortunately I had spilled a drink on it. It seems as though the publishers were simply trying to push another Chicken Soup book and just slapped a book together using remnant, semi-motivating stories from the editing floor rejects and stories from celebrities that weren't necessarily as inspiring as I would expect. Perhaps if this was my first Chicken soup book, I would have loved it, but it wasn't and I was sorely displeased.

the greatest book ever
As I read a third serving of chicken soup for the soul, my heart changed. Each story is touching. some are sad, some are happy, but they are all unforgetable. I believe that reading this book has made me a better person, and I reccomend any of the books in this series to everyone. It will touch your life forever.

What a refreshing book!
When they tout this series of Chicken Soup books as "Stories To Open The Heart And Rekindle The Spirit" they are not kidding! I have the first three Servings, and have the fourth on order. I read them cover to cover, laughing, crying, sighing. I can't bookmark any one page because almost every single page is great, and can be related to my life or referred to others to help in their lives. It is a book on life's perspectives... These two men hit the nail on the head everytime with the book's entries. I can read the book cover to cover, and find myself going back a day or two later, and re-reading one or more of the stories, as it relates to my life. I would recommend this book to everyone, young and old alike. It is truly a book, and a series, for everyone!!

Open Closed Open: Poems

In the centerpiece of Open Closed Open, the Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai ponders his most treasured keepsake, "a triangular fragment of stone from a Jewish graveyard destroyed / many generations ago." This object is, needless to say, more than a souvenir: throughout the zigzagging lines of "The Amen Stone," it allows Amichai to reconstruct bits and pieces of the past, "fragment to fragment, / like the resurrection of the dead, a mosaic, / a jigsaw puzzle. Child's play." The ensuing narrative leads the poet directly into his nation's history. Yet this is not merely a political but a personal resurrection, for Amichai sees himself as the stone's well-weathered counterpart, a byproduct of time. And he, too, has experienced an inevitable erosion: "Jewish History and World History / grind me between them like two grindstones / sometimes to a powder."

Throughout the collection, Amichai returns again and again to this convergence. In "Once I Wrote 'Now and in Other Days.' Thus Glory Passes, Thus the Psalms Pass," for example, he chronicles the destruction of Huleh swamp, an open ecosystem drained by the Israeli government during the 1950s to fight malaria and provide arable land:

Now half a century later they are filling it with water again
because it was a mistake. Perhaps my entire life
I've been living a mistake
Indeed, Amichai's misgivings seem to extend to the very foundations of the modern Israeli state. Might not the "bright-colored birds" who fled the swamp "for their lives" be figures for the displaced Palestinians? Huleh, we learn, was eventually restored. But sowing the seeds of peace is as precarious an enterprise as rebuilding a fragile ecosystem.

Elsewhere, "My Son Was Drafted" records a father's concern and fear for his military-age child. Amichai wishes his son were joining an army without a war, where soldiers serve as decorations around monuments, where the ornate and impractical replace the camouflaged and tactical. But here, too, the father has a few spiritual heirlooms to pass on to his son, which incidentally allow him to open up yet another closed system:

I would like to add two more commandments to the ten:
the Eleventh Commandment: "Thou shalt not change,"
and the Twelfth Commandment "Thou shalt change. You will change."
My dead father added those for me.
A man, Amichai suggests, is more pliable once he has been opened up, refreshed, newly defined. Cultures, alas, are not so flexible. But the rich language of Open Closed Open, which has been meticulously translated by Chana Bloch and Chana Kronfeld, holds out the hope that nations, too, might submit to the Twelfth Commandment. --Ryan Kuykendall

Amichai struggles with eternity
Compared to his earlier work, this is a disappointment. Themes which worked extraordinarily well in the past seem flat here. Anyone who has really read Amichai will understand this. The few good pieces presented here pale in comparison to those which may one day win Amichai a Nobel Prize, those tight, wonderfully written pieces which are memorable without effort. Unfortunately, there is not a line in this work which stands out. In this work Amichai is very reflective. He is reviewing his life, and though there are moments which seem tender it is a tenderness without the caress. A thoughtful work which does not leave one thinking very long. If you want to experience Amichai, read any of his earlier works, love poems etc. Or his last best book from 1989 "Gam ha-Egruf..."(In English, "Even the fist was once an open hand with fingers"). This work relies more on the great author's name to sell it then the quality of the work within. His earlier work sells itself easily because it was great, in and of itself.

The Perfect Ending
This, the final of Yehuda Amichai's works, lays to rest a life and career memorable to no end. Open Closed Open is about the Israel that is and has been -- tensions that have not faded -- complexities that have not eroded -- and loves that remain in spite of it all. It is, in every sense, a book of poetry, of poetics unequalled. Please read Open Closed Open.

Genius
Amichai's poetry, and especially this book, is the pristine instance of a Jewish literature. To Jews, or those interested in Jewish culture, Amichai's symbols and meditations will strike a profound chord, as he draws on Jewish culture--from Abraham to modernity--to create a comprehensive poetic representation of a people's collective conscience.

However, even those with little interest in Jewish culture should be able to appreciate this work, as Amichai's commentary on the ephemerality of life, the beauty of love and the capriciousness of the world bears a profound appeal to all readers. I would recommend this book as a prime example of how beautiful modern poetry can be. Amichai takes ancient symbols and historical allusions, fits them into a uniquely modern meditation, and the result is breathtaking.

Sad
Though the book is a well written account of an African immigrant's experience, I was dismayed to find that the author bought into a lot of the stereotypes of African Americans and Africans. Check out Morehouse and Howard universities!! Had it not been for the efforts of African Americans, African immigrants would not be able to enjoy the opportunites that the author has.

the open road an african walking
The open road is a captivating recollection of one man's growth and experiences that come with his journey to and settling in th united states.Ababio tells of his past in a manner with which any audience can identify: almost everyone can understand the awkwardness of not fitting in, and the isolation that this creates. The reader can share the emotions of th author, yet the barriers that Ababio is forced to break are unique to those new to America. Though only immigrants and international students or visitors might fully identify with Ababio's specific experiences, his book is one that can educate us all. Some may doubt the recism within a race can exist, others might not recognize tha trials that one must go through to truly grasp the best qualities about America, and many may not be aware of how getting to know different cultures can enrich their own lives.Ababio uses The open Road to open the eyes of these readers to the truth of these matters and more. This book is almost addictive,as the reader is drwn into the tale like a conversation with an old friend. I recommend The open Road to anyone who wants to enjoy the story of one man's extremely interesting, entertaining, and educational transition into manhood and American society.
