Super guide for down to earth travellers
It's apparent from reading this title that the author really knows her stuff. She's spent 30 years island hopping the Caribbean and it shows in her grasp of local cultures and her ability to sniff out the authentic in every town. In a crowded field of Caribbean guidebooks, this title truly excels.

A GREAT BOOK IN EVERY RESPECT
This is truly a guide that lists everything you could possibly want to know about a golf course site unseen. I currently live in the tri-county area (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach) of south-florida and have been very impressed by the accuracy of the information contained in this book. It has certainly helped me enjoy the sport by allowing me to choose a course for my type of play. Thank you Mr. Shacky

A GREAT GUIDE!!!
I been living in Arizona for the past twelve years and have enjoyed the countless courses that we have in our wonderful state. I seriously thought that I knew all of the best courses in my state until last Christmas when my wife bought me this informative book. Since then I've discovered numerous courses that I may not have discovered if it wasn't for this well thought out book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in dicovering the vast resources of golf courses throughout my home state. By the way... Jimmy Shacky writes beautifully.

Open Road's Japan Guide

Patrice Fusillo and Noriko Araki have authored a large book about a small country where space is at a premium, and packed it with the sort of details and options that let you maneuver, if not like a native, at least like a well-informed traveler. Covering all the islands, and giving in-depth attention to Mt. Fuji, the Japan Alps, and all the major cities, Open Road's Japan Guide is a remarkably comprehensive and useful tome. Fusillo and Araki explain everything, including the craftsmanship that goes into making a perfect lacquer bowl, the acumen that churns out millions of Walkmans, proper etiquette for Japanese inns and baths, and what the temples and shrines are all about. Along with a history of Japan and asides on culture and religion, they give cost-cutting advice; direct you to hot-spring resorts, kabuki dances, smoking volcanoes, serene rock gardens, and virtual reality game centers; explain how to get around by train; introduce you to a vast array of restaurants; detail all the sight-seeing alternatives; and thoroughly cover the lodging options in each city. With additional chapters on sports and recreation in Japan and traveling with children, they make the diverse pleasures of Japan accessible.

The Real London Unveiled
What splendid guides Meg Rossoff and Caren Acker are! They know everything there is to know about London and they're willing to reveal it. They are delightfully opinionated and contagiously enthusiastic. This book will be of immense value to newcomers and to old London hands alike: there's that much in it, from the basics to the most hidden (the hows and whats and whys of pubgoing, for instance, that will enable you to pass for an experienced local). For those who travel with kids, this will simplify and enrich your visit. I know London well, and yet they manage to come up with a "favorites" list of hotels most of which were new to me, all of which were within reach on a splurge, and all of which sounded utterly charming in its individual way. It is this blend of a highly personal approach with solid information that makes the book both such a valuable guide and such a wonderful read. Top marks!

Everything you need to know about partying on New Year's Eve
What a great find this book was for me. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to party into the next millenium. The book contains an unbelievable amount of information on getting ready for the biggest party of our lifetime! Hotels, cruises, hot air balloon rides, you name it and it's covered in this book. Anyone who is in the travel and tourism industry will find this book indispenable. It has helped me immensely and I even made my own party plans based on the author's recommendation. Five stars for this little jewel of a book!

Open Road's San Francisco Guide
Published in Paperback by Open Road Pub (September, 1996)
Author: Stephanie Gold
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $0.97
Buy one from zShops for: $13.80
San Francisco Guide by Stephanie Gold is one of the most comprehensive looks at the Bay City on the market today. A great resource for visitors, it's also thorough enough for any local who wants to hunt down the inside scoop. Clearly, Gold has a handle on her town, and readers will appreciate her breezy, conversational style. Though the guide doesn't include photographs, reams of well-organized information more than make up for it. You won't find thumbnail descriptions of neighborhoods or hotels in this book--each entry receives nearly half a page of coverage. And the sections themselves are more than thorough: the "Where to Eat" chapter, for instance, is an astonishing 161 pages. Even San Francisco natives are bound to discover a few new dining choices here (the pages on good eats near movie theaters are a nice touch). Readers interested in nocturnal activities will certainly applaud the space dedicated to nightlife and entertainment--why do most guidebooks shortchange this important category? The best Irish pubs, karaoke bars, and gay clubs are all covered. You'll also find detailed sections on sightseeing, cultural offerings, shopping, and day trips. And as if that weren't enough, the "Practical Information" chapter is packed with everything from garages to 24-hour pharmacies. --Jill Fergus

What a great guide book!!!!!
After buying 3 other guide books about Spain, this is the best of the bunch. Deep detail on off the neaten path destinations that are not even covered in any other books, well written, and a great travel asset. Highly recommended for those looking for a real special trip.

Open Road: A Celebration of the American Highway

The Open Road -- A Delightful Journey
I was given this book by my children recently after I had told them how much I enjoyed travelling the great roads we have in our country. I'm glad they chose this particular book because it's been one of the most enjoyable I've ever read. Not only is it historically relevant in describing how we developed from pastoral backwoods areas to a system of large cities and suburbs, but it sheds light on many unknown facts of that 200 year journey. For instance, I did not know that our present day Interstate Highway system-something we take for granted when we drive to see grandma a few states away at Christmas time-was originally proposed by President Roosevelt in 1937. He envisioned it as a pattern of roads which would facilitate the movement of men and equipment during the World War which he knew was imminent. Neither did I know the extent to which Huey Long, the populist governor of Louisiana in the '30's, used the construction of roads throughout his state to enlist support from the common people. ("Every Man A King" was his slogan.) So successful was Long that historians say he might have seriously challenged Roosevelt in 1936 had he not been assasinated. Patton points out the fusion of good highways, recently invented air-conditioning and reliable vehicles enabled the entire southern portion of the United States to prosper during the last half of the 20th Century. It was a combination of these three factors which moved us from a predominantly backwards area stretching from Atlanta to Los Angeles into becoming the nation's prosperous Sun Belt. It is this region that has attracted so many new residents and has "driven" the emerging high tech commercial engine which is fueling the unparalled prosperity of our country. From the opening of the first road in America, the Natchez Trace, dedicated in 1803 by Thomas Jefferson, to the 99.9% completed Federal Interstate Highway system, Patton takes us on a journey at once both informative and nostalgic, winding down the roads where the orange-topped Howard Johnsons sat, and out past all the Burma Shave signs lining the roads splitting the wheat fields of Nebraska. I urge all who are interested in learning how the American road evolved to read this book. As a 1951 Ford ad in the book pointed out: "Today the American Road has no end; the road that went nowhere now goes everywhere....on that road, the nation is travelling beyond the troubles of this century, constantly heading towards a finer tomorrow." True then, truer now.
