Excellent teaching tool
This book is great! If you don't have access to college courses or the time to take them then this is a book for you. This book is clearly written and its exercises guide you through properly interpreting mass spectra. The first edition of this book is also excellent. If you compare this book to McLafferty's (Interpretation of Mass Spectra) this is much more effective for teaching the beginner. I highly recommend this book

MCANDREW: OPEN AIR CHURCHES OF 16TH CE

Great look an Post Conquest Indigenous Art
Many persons interered in mesoamerican art and indigenous culture draw a line at 1521, when Cortes and his 50,000 strong indigenous allies overcame the last stronghold of Mexi'ca (azteca) power at Tlatelolco. They seem to feel that once this happened all "indigenous art" ended, surviving only faintly in the artesanal crafts of distant indigenous villages. Many feel that colonial art and architecture are fake and clumsy derivitives of an imperialistic culture that was forced down the throats of the the vanquished indigenous people.

But what McAndrew profoundly shows is that the indigenous artists (painters, sculptors and craftsmen) quickly, eloquently, and innovatively, abosrbed the late mideval- early renaissance/moorish styles of the spanish and quickly created a uniquely Mexican colonial/indigenous style that still captures our modern artistic sensibility. They aggresively adopted the technological imports of the Europeans ( the arch, metal tools etc.) But in doing so they not only kept alive their precolumbian sensibilities, the embued the european esthetic with a richer, more passionate exuberence that was lacking within the mannered and court-approved styles of European culture.

This "tequiti" style gave rise to modern Mexico's unique blend of latin rooted "spanish colonial" style with deep indigenous currents; as well as blending in asian and african touches that were a part of colonial Mexico.

McAndrew's book justly calls our attention as travelors, lovers of indigenous art, and historians to discover and study the great conventos, churches and chapels of Mexico, created by the same people that created the "pyramids" of Teotihuacan, Tula, Tenochtitlan and Chichen Itza.

A computing breakthrough!
Dr. Sapaty describes some very far out and very powerful technologies that are coming on line for organizational management of dynamic distributed systems. The Internet will no longer be just for sending emails and basic e-commerce in the very near future. I see WAVE as a general solver to a multitude of distributed systems. WAVE is a new methodology and technology enabling the solution of any reasonable, and some that may not be currently reasonable, problem in distributed computer networks, with code mobility being a key principle. The technology allows for the problem description on a semantic level, shifting traditional coordination, synchronization, and data or agent exchange to automatic implementation, making application programming very compact and simple.

This WAVE paradigm looks very powerful: One issue with it is that it is so radically new and improved from what is currently being done, that it will take a while for people to actually believe it is real! I do, and now I want - no, need - to help convince others...The fact that you are reading this review indicates that you have interest in this field. As such, I recommend that you purchase this book, as well as his new book that discusses advances in the spatial programming of distributed dynamic worlds (which is due to be released soon) and judge for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Very touching, helpful and moving book!!!!!!!!!!!
This book moved me to tears. Mrs. Vanderveen is a very talented writer. She explores the many emotions a grieving parent goes through- even the ones most people are afraid to acknowledge. I love her honesty and openess. It will help others feel not so alone with the emotions they will be going through...such as spirituality & sex. Her children are very lucky to have such a wonderful Mother who has left them a treasure of herself and their brother.

This is the first of an ongoing series of art catalogs
Each 128 pp edition of "Paintings" catalogs, in full color, work of the 50 winners of a rigorous competition for mid-career and emerging painters held in one of six regions of the US and juried by curators from major art museums (Guggenheim, National Gallery, etc.) museum-quality stock and reproduction; exciting new talent; almost no artspeak. Collectors and gallery directors report using these books as valuable resources for finding new talent. Great coffee table books for everyone!

Like potato chips, it's hard to be satisfied with with just one. This first, 1993, volume features artists from New England. Subsequent volumes feature artists from Mid-Atlantic, Southern, Midwestern, Western and Pacific Coast states; and then start again in the Northeast. Differences and similarities of artists around the country are fascinating to follow.

As of December, 1997, at least two competitions will have been held in each region of the country. For a list of volume numbers by region, e-mail your request to us.
