How urban areas workThe background to his study was this: following the enormous success of the plaza of Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building in New York in the mid-1950s, the city began to give tax breaks to new buildings that included plazas as part of their design. At the Seagram, people found in the heart of the city a marvelous space in which to congregate, to eat lunch, to sit and talk, and just enjoy a few minutes away from the office. While the idea of providing an incentive to new plaza development was unquestionably a great aim, a small problem developed: many of the new plazas were, unlike that of the Seagram, just dreadful. Cold, austere, people unfriendly, unwelcoming, many of them seemed designed more to keep people away than give them a place to enjoy themselves. This is where Whyte comes in. New York City was concerned with codifying what made a successful plaza, and giving tax breaks based more on the kind of plaza being built, rather than any kind of plaza at all. So, Whyte was charged with discovering precisely what goes into a successful urban space. The results of his exhaustive study are summed up in this brilliant monograph.
Whyte took cameras and began filming all kinds of urban spots in plazas and parks, and on regular sidewalks. As a result of this study, he was able first to analyze how urban spaces work, and secondly on the basis of this make, to make suggestions as to how to make successful spaces. He discusses the enormous value and utility of using fountains or falling water both to provide aesthetic benefits and to create a barrier of white noise between an urban space and the street. He shows the value of having a variety of steps and levels in providing fun places to sit. He allays the fears of those who are afraid that a plaza will attract undesirables by showing that the homeless tend to go where other people are not. He displays the patterns of traffic on sidewalks and the function that street food can play. Whyte comes across not merely as a sophisticated urban planner and social scientist: he is revealed as a visionary.
I think that this ought to be a must-read for anyone with any curiosity about cities and the potential they possess for a vibrant and exciting social life. Here in my own city of Chicago, I constantly lament that Whyte's lessons go unheeded and unlearned. We Chicagoans take pride in how clean our downtown area is, but we possess very, very few plazas, instead having virtually all of our buildings coming all the way to the edge of the sidewalk. I lament that there are so few places in the Loop and the near North to sit at lunch, that so very, very little has been done along the river to make it people friendly, and that there are so few places to congregate. We have a gorgeous, inpirational skyline, but on the sidewalk level, things are different. I wish our city planners had more of Whyte's view of things.

Small Backwoods Town HumorFor those who don't know, Geech is the main character of the strip. He's a dim-witted man who "works" at the local gas station/auto-repair shop for Merle. While Merle isn't the brightest person on the planet, he does pay Geech to basically do nothing. Merle is good at not fixing your car. Others in the town are Nadine (an overweight food-a-holic), her best friend Ruby (the life-long waitress at the local cafe), Artie Beemer (a family man), Rabbit Fester (the angry owner of the local bar), Homer Pervis (the old barber who can't cut hair), Weldon Ledbedder (the guy always trying to get a decent hair cut), Raymond Flowers (the big bartender with a good heart), and Rev. J. C. Meeks (who's always trying to convert Rabbit).
Funny, imaginative stuff

VERY INFORMATIVE

CLOSES THE BIBLE ON DEVANGELICAL OPEN THEORYSince there are plenty of books already on the market since Calvin's/Arminius's time debating these evangelical positions, the Devangelical aberrancy of Open Theory will be highlighted that springs from the fertile pens/brains of contempo philosophisticates such as Gregory Boyd, Clark Pinnock, John Sanders.
The first fatal flaw of Devangelical Openism is lack of biblical integrity. Texts used by their creative proponents are skewed and lopsided to a reduced Providence, due to reduced Prescience.
After all, the very word PRO VIDENCE comes from the Latin for 'seeing beforehand'. Since according to Openists, God cannot see free decisions beforehand because of their non-existence, His Providence is accordingly limited to the past, present and divine projections/forecasts about probabilities of what may or might occur, if all present things remain equal.
The second fatal flaw of Devangelical Open Theory is its massive overdependency on Western Philosophy a la Whitehead and Hartshorne. See separate review of Boyd's TRINITY & PROCESS to get an idea of the processistic leanings of Openism. The argument "since Openism is not Process, they have little in common" is BOGUS. An honest evaluation of both Process and Openism (which Boyd tries to do in TRINITY & PROCESS) shows a great deal in common after all. Balanced scholars like Millard Erickson in his WHAT DOES GOD KNOW AND WHEN DOES HE KNOW IT establish the connection quite clearly and undeniably to any fair reader.
The third fatal flaw of Devangelical Open Interpretation is a failure to understand how to read the Bible properly and gather what it really says about God's OMNIPRESCIENT CAPABILITY. Just reading the book of Jeremiah dispels any notion of God being ignorant of any aspect of free futures. See Jer.42 leading up to verse 22 when the rebellious remnant seeks to escape to Egypt. God OMNIPRESCIENTLY warns them "Know CERTAINLY that you shall die by the sword, famine, plague in the place where you decide to go to dwell." God's Providence is clear. God's Prescience is clear. The people's free will and libertarian rebellion is clear.
But just as clear is what is missing: any hint at an Openist spin on the text or processistic philosophy take on events.
The author does an outstanding rebuttal biblically, common sensically and philosophically that Openism is a failed system. And it just so happens to also be DEVANGELICAL.
This book is highly recommended to all Arminian-leaning Bible students (like yours truly) to note the abysmal pitfalls of Open Theory and how it damages any semblance of Providence left in its incoherent, inconsistent, inapprehending system of belief.
Jesus said it best about PROVIDENCE, PRESCIENCE & PROPHECY:
"AMEN, AMEN, I tell you Peter, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times." (John 13:38) Note the double-AMEN in the Greek text!
Puts open theism in its placeThe book stresses the biblical support for the Calvinist and Arminian positions and their challenges. All in all, most impressive how they are treated and evaluated.
When it came to the open view, I had to read and re-read the rationale for open theists holding such beliefs and at the same time take the Bible in its naturally intended way. It was confusing to say the least! But the author did a good job in showing how open view is far from a valid bible viewpoint.
I think what settled the issue for this reader is how the open position seems to believe in a God who progresses, changes or is in process of adding to himself new things. This is rather disturbing. Almost like a deity that evolves and improves and increases in understanding and awareness of what was not aware of before?
This book helped me get back to the Bible and read it again for myself. It seems midway between Calvinism and Arminian (Cal-minian) is probably the Bible position (not Either/Or, but some Both/And). The more I look up the Bible verses in support of Providence and Free Will/Moral Agency, open theism just can't handle all the texts completely without damage to one side (Providence) or overinflating of the other (Meaningful, unprogrammed Choice)
This book shows how Calvinism, Arminian and a Cal-minian view can be valid interpretations of Biblical Providence. But open view is invalid and needs to be either reworked from scratch, or folded back into a moderate Cal-minian position to even get close to all the Scriptures teaching Providence and Free Agency.
I highly recommend this book as an affirmation of the Bible's plain teaching of how God looks forth, Pro Vides for us. And a refutation of the open teaching that God cannot look forward without limits and hindrance into the future and thus how can He fully Pro Vide for us? Can God only Vide? Can He only look, but not Ahead? Is He blinded to what will definitely come and not come our way? Can He only look backward and look around but not forward just as completely and unmistakably?

Yes, The Best Book On Swimming For Triathletes I have Read
The definitive book on triathlon swimmingWhen you buy the book, you should also order the video "Fishlike Freestyle," which shows all the drills beautifully executed by top-notch swimmers. (In fact, the "models" in the video make the drills look TOO easy.)
If you read the book, follow the program, and execute the drills according to the video, you'll become an excellent swimmer. It might take you several months or even a year or two, but eventually you'll do it. Personally, I'm still working at it--slowly--but a friend of mine went from being a terrible swimmer to being a beautiful, smooth, fast fishlike triathlete in the water by following the Total Immersion program. Several other of my triathlete friends have used the Total Immersion program with excellent success. You can spot these swimmers for the grace and fluidity as they glide effortlessly through the water.
If you're serious about swimming or triathlon, this book is a must buy.
