Interesting book, very focused
The book was very interesting and exciting. The pace was fast and never had a dull moment. Selina was very accurate decribing her job duties on a Military Depot. Also her everyday dealings with the Local Unions was very humerous, but generally very true.
She described the characters is the book very well. The plot was very good.

A fast paced book that you can't put down!
I found the book very exciting and fast paced. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I quickly learned to love the "good" guys and hate the "bad" guys.
The book was set in Pennsylvania, an area I know well, so I found that part very interesting. The author was very exact and accurate in her facts about the area.
I think that Selena has a lot of spunk, and I look forward to hearing about her next adventure!

The Best
I live in Los Angeles and find this book excellent for locals. I have used this book when out of towners pop in for a visit. It lists great places to eat..interesting tid-bits that I would have not known. I have a friend who is moving out here from NYC and bought him the book. He can't wait to be in LA to explore some of the sites listed. A GREAT GUIDE!

Southern California Guide
This is the most comprehensive travel guide that I have ever read and by far, the most interesting. Incidentally, the guide is 754 pages, not 448 pages, as listed by Amazon. What makes the 'Southern California Guide' different, is that the tourist learns something about the place that he is visiting. For example: The story of Winston Churchill and his connection with the Queen Mary. Example: How the famous restaurant, The Brown Derby, came into existance. There are about 200 sidebars in this guide, all interesting and helpful. There is not one restaurant, hotel, motel, entertainment venue, sports venue, shopping area or anything else of importance to the tourist, that is not covered in this book. The author is very candid about the establishments listed in this book and is not afraid to give you her opinion of same, good and bad. Last but not least, the tourist will find many, many, out of the way places listed in this guide that you will not find in any other travel guide. I unequivocally recommend this travel book as the very best that has ever been written about the Southern California Area.

The Only guidebook you'll need
I planned a self guided tour of Italy this past October/November. In addition to the Open Road guide, I purchased Frommer's 2001 Italy guide book. The Open road book is very well organized and written, providing an overview of Italian history, food and culture. A suggested itinerary is provided for each major city and the recomendations contained therein are invaluable. The reviews of hotels and restaurants are accurate and reflect a range of prices and styles, with an emphasis on the off the beaten path local joints. They even have suggested dishs to order and the best rooms to request.

My trip was a smashing success and I used this book for the majority of my planning.

Take only this guide to Italy.
We are the authors of Eating & Drinking in Italy. The author of this Italy guide, who lived in Italy and seems to visit often, has written a guide that can be used by budget travelers and those looking for luxury. This guide is opinionated and thorough. It's the only guide we used in Italy on our last three trips. Don't want to carry a lot of guide books? Just take this one.

Philippines guide, 2
We were being assigned to the Philippines and I browsed through all the travel books available on the country. I chose this (the first edition) because i liked the way it was written and that the writers live in the Philippines. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed! In fact i found both the information provided and the personalized descriptions of places to stay and eat very helpful. When the second edition came out i bought it and passed on my old copy to a friend. The 2nd edition has new information (unlike others that i have found are almost completely re-writes of past editions) and continues to be a more personal travel guide. I will be sorry to leave the country and this book has helped my family enjoy our travels.

Extremely helpful, highly detailed and accurate information.
I am a traveller from Madrid and was given this book as a gift by a friend from Manila. It was full of everything a traveller who is unfamiliar with an exotic country like the Philippines. When I went there with several friends last year we found the book to be extremely helpful and so accurate in detail that we had an easy time moving around, finding hotels and site-seeing areas. To the authors: thank you for a very relaxing trip to the Philippines!

Second Edition
Yes, the Second Edition of my Thailand Guide was published July 2000. I added about 50 new pages, updating material including detailed diagrams of Old Sukhothai (as I recall, you suggested this one), Wat Po, Wat Phra Khao and the Grand Palace, the National Museum, a map and suggested tour of the Canals of Thonburi, a map of the Skytrain, improved the index, etc. Very little new on the Myanmar section. I spent equivalent time of 64 8-hour days for the update. Now you know.

A CATALOGUE of information for the MODERATE budget trip.
The most currently popular travel books for Thailand are written with backpackers in mind, those who are trying to stretch the baht until it groans. Lou Bechtel's Guide is more for the typical vacationer with a moderate budget, especially for those who are taking their families with them.

The first thing you notice about this book is the extensive contact information for every single hotel and restaurant listed, and there are lots of them in every location reported. All guidebooks on Thailand cover Bangkok according to the sections of the city. This book adds a section that other books do not have:"Near the Airport," for those jaundiced travelers who wish to "skip Bangkok" other than using the airport.

Lou is frequently engaged to review hotels and cover trade fairs in Asia, so he knows what he is looking for and expecting, both in service and cost. As a travel journalist, he often gets the VIP treatment, but he thinks you should not pay more than necessary to have a good time. Often he just tells the reader, "This is what you should do."

You can read other books on Thailand with all the glossy pictures, to decide where you want to go. Once you have an idea what you would like to do and where you would like to go, this is the book to plan your itinerary.

Another interesting read
A wonderful book, but without an extensive backround in the subject it is difficult to judge its accuracy. Good to have at hand when listening to the latest dispatches from the Middle East. Guaranteed to earn you concerned glances from your friends when they spot it on your bookshelf!

No Democracy in the Middle East
The late Jewish author, Israel Shahak, explains in great detail the interconnections between U.S. and Israeli policies in both the middle east and Latin America and how these policies affect both countries and the world.

Consider the current situation with North Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan... this book is prophetic. This book details why China and North Korea will talk to Israel when negotiating indirectly witht he United States. If ever there was a time to understand the web of communications between countries such as North Korea, Syria, China, Israel, Columbia and others, now is it. I read this book over a year ago, and now come back to write a review because of its renewed importance in light of recent developments (2003).

Read about Saddam Hussein's failed attempt to make peace with Israel, and more! Long before 9-11, this book WARNS its readers of the serious terrorist threat that would come out of Afghanistan! Prophetic. A book that details information with such accuracy, makes predictions that come to realization, is certainly a book worthy of information-hungry men and women the world over.

Going back and re-reading this book is like a visit with Nostradamus. I HIGHLY recommend this book as it will provide you with a strong understanding of what's behind U.S. moves on Iraq, relative silence towards North Korea and more.

Super Reference

Open Source Web Development with LAMP is a very long title, but an absolutely killer book. LAMP is Linux (OS), Apache (web server) MySQL (database), Perl and PHP (scripting). This book also includes many languages not covered in other titles. I was particularly glad to see WML (Website Meta Language) which is useful for generating static pages through a robust programming construct. Static pages load faster and without any security concerns that you have with dynamic scripting languages like perl, php, embperl, or mason, all of which are covered extreemly well in this book.

I've been doing web development for about 8 years, which probably makes me pretty old in the business. I've seen the dynamic web content languages from infancy, but I've never seen a good way of learning them until now. OSWD w/ LAMP is absolutely fabulous.

Required reading for any web designer.
Open Source Development with LAMP (hereafter "OSWB") is the perfect book to learn a wide variety of server technologies that will have you writing useful, clean, fast, and productive websites before you finish reading.

I was one of the technical editors of this book, and was able to watch it evolve as they wrote. The authors have made a huge effort to make the book appropriate for multiple Linux distributions, and they have achieved the highest degree of technical accuracy.

OSWB covers many different technologies, some complementary, some discreet. By showing you many of the possible tools, this book lets you decide which is best for the job at hand.

The theory behind OSWB is that knowledge of 20% of a tool's capabilities will let you accomplish 80% of the tasks you face. OSWB does a superb job of giving the user a sizable introduction to webserver technologies that will be sufficient for most rojects, and tells you where you can get information for advanced needs...This is the first book I know of that has written their website with the exact same tools they teach you in the book, and they offer the entire source of their website for download for your investigation and reference.

The gold in this book is not just the descriptions of how the languages work, but how you can use them singly or together to create interactive websites. Their are many sample projects which let you see how everything fits together, and much of the ode can be adapted immediately to your needs. The book is extremely well integrated and organized.

I have used some of the languages described in this book, while others were completely new to me. I am definitely not a web design person, preferring to write back-end server software. owever while reading OSWB, I was charged with creating a MySQL database with a customizable web interface for my alumni organization. Using only this book and a few perldoc commands, I was able to create an interactive mod_perl website in a few days.

This book offers something to everyone, even advanced web designers. If you are starting out in Web technologies, or are curious about other ways you can get the job done, this is the book for you.

Most helpful for newbies in Open Source
The book is well-written, particularly helpful for people they have little or no experience in Open Source. It saves time giving advice and proposing GNU products for various web-services. The most important for me was Part III, where the subject becomes more demanding and difficult : Scalability, Availability, Site-Management and Load-Balancing. Though I have not test them yet, the proposed solutions seem applicable, sound and reasonable and integrate the endeavour for a complete Open Source environment.

Business Web Servers from the Ground Up
I'm a little biased because I hooked Thomas up with the SAMs editors, my brother was a collaborator on his earlier book, and I helped out with this one, but I only confess this to put my biases on the table: I would not have done any of that if I didn't think Thomas Schenk was up to the task, and he exceeded my wildest dreams as an opensource writer.

This is not just another book about configuring webservers. Yes, it includes how to configure the systems, how to cluster servers and all that hot jazz, but far more importantly, this book asks you to face those hard questions that make the difference between a webserver and a business webserver. This is a book from someone who knows what he's talking about; Tom was the server master behind Deja.com and currently consults for Penguin Computing. He knows your server is not a mere capital asset; a successful web venture depends on vitality and communications as much as it depends on throughput and uptime.

This is also not just another book about Linux and Apache; Tom goes to the heart of the business case for opensource on mission critical systems. There are example applications of many alternative server, eBusiness and content management packages, but these are brandnames that will change with time: The essential lessons of opensource that emerge from the many case studies will continue to be valuable long after all these names have vanished from memory.

An Open Tunings Christmas for Guitar Book/Cd Set

Out of the Ordinary
I love the sound of a guitar for Christmas music, and in my quest for a variety of arrangements, Steve's book stands apart from other collections that I have purchased. There is a mix of familiar and lesser known international tunes, which are not only set in an array of different tunings, but stylistically have different approaches; they don't all sound the same. As a beginner/intermediate player, I appreciate that some of the tunes I can play right away, while others entice me to improve my skills. The CD that accompanies the book will be enjoyed for the beautiful renditions of seasonal music, in addition to its instructional value.

We are not worthy!
The preeminent teacher of the guitar is finally back with his second guitar instruction guide, the long-awaited An Open Tunings Christmas for Guitar.

Here are two important things you should know about this sublimely brilliant text with accompanying CD: (1) It can be easily studied and fully understood on its own terms, without reference to Baughman's previous guitar book, so newcomers to Baughman wonderful instruction books needn't be deterred; and (2) It's such a richly insightful, universally relevant book about musical technique that each and every string instrumentalist -- not just the guitarist -- stands to gain immeasurable new depths of polish, style, and expressiveness through its use and study. (It's a shame that the title is apt to turn off fiddlers, harpists, mandolinists, and others who will benefit as much as guitarists from the teaching of this master.)

Don't waste another minute; life is too short; order this volume right now. As to Steve Baughman: Please don't make us wait so long again for your next book. Your dedicated fans and students can't stand the wait!

"Most Disturbing Work in English"
Photojournalist Stanley Green's "Open Wound: Chechnya 1994-2003" has recently appeared, arguably the most disturbing work ever to be published in English about the two Chechen wars, with haunting text to accompany pictures that should become as indelible in the mind as the photos of Hiroshima or Vietnam.

From "Escaping the Chechen Quagmire" www.rferl.org/reports/ucs 16 December 2003

Beautiful and Amazing pictures
This book is a must for everyone who is interested in the War against Chechnya. Pictures in this book, though not graphic, are very powerful. What the Russians are trying to hide, Stanley Greene exposes it and with class. It is going to be a classic.
