Surprise Ending! This was a good read. Stefin painted picture of a complex individual, that the reader could really get to know, and understand where he was coming from. I read the book in 1 day, couldn't put it down. It made me laugh & made me cry.. But the best part is the ending.. You will have to read it, just to see where he takes it. I ordered his 2nd book, "The Immortality King", and can't wait to read it!!

Order the "yellow" book before you go to England and Wales..If you are planning a trip to England and/or Wales and want to know which gardens are open on what days, plus which of those days selected gardens are open for charity, this is the book to buy. GARDENS OPEN FOR CHARITY (2003) is updated every year. The 2003 version is sponsored by "Carr Sheppards and Crosthaite" and contains every thing the avid gardener and/or garden lover and/or visitor will want to have on hand to plan a vacation, a weekend excursion, or a day out. I ordered the 2003 version of the "yellow book" from Amazon-UK and received it very quickly.
Gardens open almost every day through the year, or the growing season plus those only open for special events are included. You can obtain information about all kinds of gardens including the Botanic Gardens (Oxford University) and Hidcote Manor Garden in Chipping Camden (National Trust) that are accessible most of the time to privately owned gardens such as Lambeth Palace (Archbishop of Canterbury) that are only open to the public on special occasions.
England and Wales are divided into shires and maps are shown for each jurisdiction. The gardens discussed in the catalogue are noted on the map. This is one of the best if not the best guide you will find to gardens in the U.K.
Review of Gardens of England and Wales Open for Charity 1999Whether you are an armchair traveler who loves gardens or international traveler in search of the most beautiful gardens in England and Wales, this book both satisfies the craving for reading about this topic and whets the appetite for more. These private gardens, opened to visits to help raise funds for this charitable organizaton, are described in detail with dates and times they are open, admission fees, directions, parking and what is available to partake of, such as teas and music. There are several pages of beautiful color photographs. This is one book that will be packed in the suitcase or tucked by the garden lover's chair. It's a book I love and never tire of going through time and again.

The Governance of Science: Ideology and the Future of the Open Society (Issues in Society)
Published in Paperback by Open Univ Pr (May, 2000)
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Creative and thought-provokingFuller makes creative use of ideas from political philosophy to come up with a model for science policy. Encapsulating the model is the principle of "the right to be wrong". This is central to the political tradition of "republicanism", which appears to have been sidelined in public debate by its better known rivals, liberalism and communitarianism. Fuller examines and rejects liberal (free market politics) and communitarian (identity politics) arguments for the organization of knowledge. The liberal ideology punishes individuals whose ideas and projects are made "wrong" by the market - not by taking away their freedom to exist but by making it harder for them to move on and acquire intellectual capital. Dissent is highly risky in the absence of a safety-net in the case of failure. The communitarian ideology would forbid the very expression of certain ideas; it places cultural hurdles for individuals to dissent from their community, which in the case of science, is the academic discipline that they are a part of. By contrast, republicanism both encourages free expression and recognizes that specific steps must be taken to provide more than a few risk-takers with the incentive for such expression. Relying as it does on large-scale state-funded resources, "Big Science" undermines the republican ideal, Fuller argues - failure becomes too costly. Now that the question of government versus private funding for science is regularly being debated in the media, Fuller's proposals detailed in the book provide an interesting and thought-provoking alternative to the usual positions. But apart from science policy people, those interested in political theory should also find this book worth a read.
Gutsy defence of open scienceThis book is much more politically minded than Fuller's usual stuff and he says things that have needed to be said for a long time - namely, that organised enquiry is threatened by both the political correctness brigade and grant racketeers. There are some pretty wild positive proposals in here as well, which include enabling people to gamble on alternative research programmes as a way of raising public interest (and perhaps even support?) in science. Definitely worth a look, even if with arched eyebrow. Certainly much gutsier than run-of-the-mill science studies.

A Suspensefilled storySabina Zimering has created a monument to courage. This is the unusual holocaust memoir of two Jewish sisters' flight from Poland and extermination camps. They flee to Germany where they hide in the open till the end of the war. The gripping story pulls the reader along to its bittersweet ending. During their flight the sisters time and again escape apprehension and when they, during the last months of the war, settle in as domestics in a hotel housing Gestapo officers they face daily danger. Sabina Zimering's prose is captivating and colorful, her story compelling. A must read for anyone interested in the holocaust and WWII.
Dr. Zimering a survivorDr. Zimering is a wonderful new writer. I had heard of her story and was pleased she had it published. This book holds special meaning to me because I know one of its characters, Helka. Helka is in her 70's now, and a strong woman who understandably carries the weight of her past on her shoulders. However, she's a very private woman and her past had mostly been a mystery to those of us who know her. The mystery is solved as Dr. Zimering's writing takes the reader into an ugly era filled with remarkable people. Understanding the history helps me better know Helka. I'm overwhelmed with the story Dr. Zimering writes and am planning on purchasing 15 more copies of this book to share with others who know Helka. I hope to meet Dr. Zimering one day soon, as she seems an amazing, courageous woman whom I would be proud to know.

Set amid the natural beauty of Montana and IdahoSet amid the natural beauty of Montana and Idaho, A High, Lonesome Call: One Man, Two Bird Dogs, And The Open Road That Is Their Answer by sportswriter Robert Holthouse is a superbly written novel of searching, self-reflection, and respect for wild grandeur. Drawing upon autobiographical experience, Holthouser wonderfully captures the essence of the hunt and the bond between a man and his faithful canine companions. A thoughtful, serious, soul-deepening read.
Gun Dog ChroniclesYou have to be interested in the subject, but, then again, maybe you do not. This is a great dog and hunting book. It is also one of the best written books of any I have read, and I have read a lot of the different genres. Read it and see if you don't agree.

Best BibleThis is thee best study Bible I have ever read. It doesn't explain each and every verse but gives you solid facts that aid in your study. It lets the word of God explain itself and doesn't give some editors opinion.
The Bible a Bible Student Must Have!I have many Bibles, but this one is very user friendly. I needed to do research and I found this Bible most helpful. A friend let me use hers for a paper and I fell in love with it. I had to put it in my shopping cart ASAP. Buy it if you are in the process of studying the Bible, you won't regret it!

The New Open Book BibleLove the Bible Cyclopedic, the Concordance, the Christian Worker section, the Between the Testaments, the .... could go on and on with the pluses! AWESOME BOOK - AWESOME AUTHOR!
A Bible Teacher's DelightI have owned my New Open Study Bible since 1994. I have split the spine on my Bible from overuse so I had to order another. The topical index in the front is superb and covers more topics than you will ever need to teach or study the Bible. The background articles on the customs and manners of Bible times dispersed throughout this work give all the background necessary to teach an in-depth bible study on that topic. The charts of measures, currency, customs, feasts, kingdoms, and time are excellent. The Visual Survey of the Bible Chart in the center of the Bible is a fabulous overview of the key concepts and principles taught in the O.T. and N.T. It is worth the price of this Bible. It fabulously shows how all of the books of the Bible fit together and the main topics presented in each book. The book introductions found at the beginning of each book are meaty enough for a scholar but explained simply enough for a layperson. I wish that every member of my church would invest in this wonderful study Bible. I would never want to be without it.

A great guide especially for peole who love to cook and eat.We bought this book before heading up to the Hudson Valley and it proved to be invaluable. When we weren't visiting sites like the Roosevelt Museum and Vanderbilt Mansions, we stopped at many of the farms mentioned in the book. All of the farmers knew Jan Greenberg and treated us like old friends. We returned to New York with a hamper full of food which we enjoyed for days afterwards. A book like this is certainly different from your standard guidebooks and gave us a special dimension to our visit to the Hudson Valley.
Great resource for food loversWhen my family moved to the Hudson Valley, we had heard about its agricultural resurgence but it was difficult to find out where to go and who was growing and producing what. Jan Greenberg's book has been a wonderful source for the freshest, just-picked fruits and vegetables. We now buy most of our meat and poultry locally as well. We know that we are eating food that not only tastes good but is grown and raised in a way that makes us feel good about eating it. We also like being able to tell our children the stories about the farmers who raise the food that we are eating. All in all, this is a great resource.
