for easy sailing fiction, this is as good as it gets!
Classic! Like several other reviewers, I just stumbled on an ancient paperback copy of this in a used bookstore, and what a little treasure it is! hard to believe that in 1956 you could pick this book up for just 35 cents, the same book I just bought for 2.50 (though at a mere 4.7% compound interest I guess it's just as well I bought it now, and not in 1956). I'm so happy to see it's still available; keep your expectations low and this is a fast-moving, cleanly written little sailing adventure that stands the test of time; absolutely perfect vacation, travel, or relaxing read. If you're looking for more: I still have not read the highly touted classic 'Riddle of the Sands' but I imagine it's very similar.

The Best Book in the world
I picked up this book as a 13 yr old at a country fair and have been completely heart broken since I lent it a friend who lost it about five years ago. To explain how good it is I have spend these last 5 years doing my damnedest to find a copy. This book should be on every school curriculum. Fascinating, exhilarating, saddening, frustrating - this book brings out every emotion humanly possible. The style of writing leaves you feeling the spirit of the Mary Deare and the shifting of her along the reefs of The Minkies. Fantastic! I cannot wait to get my hands on it again

OutstandingAdventure Storry, Expert writing, Movie Potential
My wife picked up this book in a used bookstore in Seward,Alaska, while on a bike trip. We were looking for a cheep read and were shocked that we had bumbled onto a timeless classic. Half way through my wife, who is a professor and creative writer herself, got so exhited about the storry that she cut the book in half so that I could start on the beginning half of the book. The storry is outstanding (and I generally am not a fan of maritime themes), the writing rivals the great authors of the century, and the research is flawless. A must read. It is the second best book that I have ever read, behind "To Whome the Bell tolls"....this one is a lot less depressing.

Women of Texas
I just got my copy of You Go Girl in the mail. I am Mom who traveles in her van all over town to attend her kids sports activities, and this book has been with me all week. I liked the way Charlie and Kim told the personal stories along with professional truimphs. I think woman of all ages would enjoy reading this book. It has truly been a hit in our household.

Inspiring and Uplifting!
The book "You Go Girl" is a must have for female athletes of all ages. As you read through each chapter, the steps and obstacles of becoming a successful athlete are presented in the stories of women in the world of sports. The greatest part is you can pick up the book and begin reading any story! I am a teenager playing 3 sports in high school and can easily apply the lessons these women present into my daily routine. I have recommended this book to my friends and cannot wait to show my coaches!

EXTRAORDINARY BOOK!
These amazing women athletes all made the decision to set a goal, to have the right attitude, to have faith and determination, and to make sacrifices in order to reach their dreams/goals in life. This book is very uplifting and inspirational - full of wisdom, optimism, gratitude and joy. It is truly a gift that makes you feel so good after reading just a few pages. I had the opportunity to share some of the stories with my male friends and they enjoyed it as much as I did. My five star recommendation goes out to both Kim and Charlie. Thanks for being able to share all these inspirational stories with us!

A Homerun!
This book was excellent. I loved every single minute of it. Even though I am not a big sports fan, this book was engrossing with it's facinating detail to the game of baseball. It gave me a new appreciation of sports, and what it means to the people involved in it. The characters were precious, and I truly felt like I knew them. Several days later, I still remember them well. THAT's the sign of a great book!

Phenomenal
Since I reluctantly read Hometown Legend and was blown away, I've been looking at Jerry Jenkins' other books, and it's been fantastic. This is a wonderful book, and if you're a sports fan like me, you'll appreciate the incredible attention to detail and obvious sports knowledge Jerry has. However, if you're not a sports fan, like my wife, you'll still love it like she did because of the precious characters and terrific dialogue.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book!

Just what you'd expect a hero to be!
Engrossing! Captivating! I was intrigued by the main character's minute attention to every detail in the game of baseball. He used all of his senses to micro-analyze every aspect of hitting and fielding to become a great player. Like with other books, I kept waiting for the fatal flaw in Elgin, but was very pleased that he turned out to be a moral person as well as an excellent athlete. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

Dharma Talks to Enlighten the Heart and Lift the Load
Jack Kornfield does an excellent job of softly and gently leading the listener to understanding what is deep within. These Dharma talks help to ease the burdens of life and give one inner peace and understanding.

I find they are wonderful for daily listening --- morning or evening. They are graceful and full of marvelous strength for all who hear them.

I cannot recommend these listening pleasures enough.

It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!
If you want to learn about yourself, with a smile and a tear, Jack Kornfield is the teacher for you. He has a marvelous sense of humor, especially about himself, and his depth of practice and experience comes through in this light-hearted approach to the Middle Path. Ideal for the beginner, but also highly recommended if you're an "old hand" who wants to get out of their Dharma rut.
Kindness and compassion are communicated in his words and tone, as he leads the listened through the fundamentals of Buddhist practice. A "must have" for any Dharma library!

Audio tapes are great company
Don't be intimidated by six audio tapes. Jack is excellent - the tapes are rich with examples, stories, and jokes. They are great company in the car or wherever, as we travel the path.

Powerful, Great Motivator...
I purchased this on a whim in a double-pack with Dr. Wayne Dyer's tape. Well, needless to say...I listened to Ms. Hay's tape so much that it popped in my player! Her tape is AWESOME, POWERFUL, LIFE CHANING, LIFE MOVING, LIFE MOTIVATING. Sure, the tape is dated, but positivity is timeless. I didn't know the date of publication when I purchased it, but I loved the title and wanted to hear the tape. It's worth every penny. Try playing this as background music. She is soft, gentle, soothing, and actually, very nice to listen to -- over and over. It is a great way to the start the morning. While I dressed and got ready for my day, I played this tape! Wow! I started every day with this tape and THEN found myself popping it in during the day to listen even more while working at my computer. As a writer, I found them great as background noise -- better than the tv and more inspiring than music or the radio. I felt accomplished -- I was nurturing my spirit and my innerself, while completing my work!

I saw immediate results. After a day, I felt better and then after a few days, I was pumped! Like a personal trainer for the brain! After a few days, I found myself more POSITIVE and even refuting lots of the negativity around me. I surprised myself! I'm buying another tonight and immediately copying it on CD for myself to listen to forever.

That's my only complaint. These affirmation tapes are not in a better, more lasting format! Enjoy!

POWERFUL! Worth every penny!
This tape might be dated, but the affirmations are great! I listen it to every day, in the car ...while at my desk working. Very uplifting and her voice is not irritating -- nice, soft and you can listen over and over. I noticed results within a few days. I was feeling a little blue and then -- bam...listening to the tape, I was feeling great! Moreover, I started attracting positive events -- remember, what we think about and focus on, we go towards and attract. So...this tape gave me the confidence to plant my garden again. "I have a natural green thumb"...

Thanks Louise Hay!

101 Power Thoughts/Audio
Listening to this tape is a positive, uplifting way for me to start each day. The affirmations are simple and thus easy to remember; they also go right to the point of need. I listen to this tape so often that I'll have to buy another copy soon!

Adventures in the Skin Trade

passivity?
A wonderful piece of writing. Samual Bennett, the main character, is a young man who attempts to let his life's course be dictated only by external influences. His move to London is preceded by the destruction of his parent's precious mementoes, thereby ensuring that he can never return home. The book, cut short by the death of Thomas, follows the youth on his adventure in passivity with sparkling prose and incredible characters. Unfortunately we can only speculate on the final outcome.

altered landscapes...
wow... not what i expected.

while the plot itself does not have time to become remarkable, the characters are animated enough to compensate. the whole thing seemed to be a cartoonish farce; i could not help thinking of old beatles movies and episodes of scooby doo (?)

this appears to have been written from an altered perspective (or was intended to convey one) as characters shift in and out of the story's focus in a stalled, haphazard way such that each one is grooving to his own inner music. the individuality and breadth of creativity displayed here by thomas and his unique assembly of characters is amazing considering the book's platry 60 pages.

highly recommeded.

leaving your hometown as an inner adventure
A fine beginning: The main character of this never completed novel, due to the early death of Dylan Thomas, is Samuel Bennet. He grows up in a small town and feels very bored in this area. So, when he's twenty, he decides to go to London, where he expects to find life more interesting. This is how the story starts and the reader is probably curious to learn more of all the detailed adventures a young man can get into. But what Thomas describes is not only what Samuel encounters, he also gives a unique example of what a person may feel and think like in such a situation. With this topic, Thomas has to stand a comparism with authors like Joyce (A portrait of an artist as young man) or Wilde (The picture of Dorian Gray)and he does it quite well. To lead the reader into Samuel's world he clinks out from reality and tells some passages in a very surrealistic way. Not only this is a proof of quality, but Thomas builds up a unity to the outer world with some accurate themes wh! ich he positions with an twinkle in the eye in the story. If one thinks of the importance of the topics he develops during the story, there is hard to find a comparable piece in world literature, which is written in such a structured an allthough amusing way. The major topics are for example: Leaving home and going to the big town, getting rid of your childhood's place and planning your own future; to position oneself in the social classes; and how to manage with problems of your own childhood and where it may end when you just escape from them. In the whole I would say this is a book which has never got the reputation it may deserves, but the author has probably had too much success with other pieces within his lifetime, that this book has been a little out of the spotlight.

this is THE classic on african music. you will find it listed in the bibliographies of almost any serious study that came later. it is in-depth and comprehensive. if you want to get just one: this is it.

The heart beats ...
This book's sweetness, modesty, humor and graceful scholarship honors one of the world's greatest achievements. It's about drumming, and life.

One of the Classics
This is a remarkable work that fits African music into its cultural context and is consistently provocative and enlightening. It's a world music classic, along with such studies as "The Latin Tinge," "The Brazilian Sound" and "Catch a Fire."

All Passion Spent

Simply beautiful
This gorgeous novel reflects many of the ideas found in "A Room Of One's Own" by Virginia Woolf, with whom Vita had a famous affair. After the death of her husband, the Earl of Slane, Lady Slane shocks her staid family by asserting her own will, leaving the house she kept with her husband, and settling into a small house in the countryside. Finally after seventy years, Lady Slane is determined to live as she chooses, with a life full of contemplation, dreams, and memories. She reflects on her lost ambition to be a painter, but knows that the life she lived was not without merit or value. She finds passion in the freedom to choose, and this gift she bequeaths to the one member of her family who understands its importance.

Unforgettable classic for women (of any age) who "Get It!"
I meandered my way to this book through Sarah Ban Breathnach's treasure of self-excavation, Simple Abundance. I had read Anne Morrow Lindbergh because of her recommendation too. AML & Charles Lindbergh were good friends with Vita Sackville-West & her husband, Nigel Nicholson. So I finally got around to Vita Sackville-West & this book. It was so moving, wonderful, unforgettable, that I will reread it. I laughed & cried. I will try to find older copies of this to give away to dear friends, old & new. It's one of those books. I'm 41 & have sacrificed much for the men & children in my life that I nonetheless love so dearly. This book helped me bring those feelings of ambivalence into focus. It also helped me realize I'm relatively young & still have time to live the life I've dreamed of since I was a little girl. Maybe this "child-bearing years" thing was just a detour.

Memorable and touching
This curiously overlooked novel was revived by a Masterpiece Theater production starring Dame Wendy Hiller, which like this novel was superb. The gentle story of an elderly woman's retirement while her forceful children squabble over unimportant matters is at once comic and poignant. The author has peppered the tale with curious, memorable characters, among them the eccentric art collector who is allowed to eat in portrait galleries because museums hope he will donate to them when he dies; the benign landlord Bucktrout, who sees Lady Slain's desire for peace at home; and the coffin maker who pictures people dead to reveal their true characters. This fine little masterpiece deserves to be read today.

"Net-less" World More Managable With Shechtman's Help
Job security, care taking, blind loyalty, independence, and autocracy are OUT. Adaptability, responsibility, reciprocal loyalty, interdependence, and conflict are IN. Simply put, Morris Shechtman gives us "a clue" on how to successfully "play" today's radically changed corporate game. Just the title, "Working Without a Net", gave me the jitters. As each chapter, from "An Alternative to Working and Living In a Fantasy World" to "Doing the Right Thing," unfolds, entrenched ideas of "how things work" in the workplace are shattered, first by a values clarification test, (oh, yes, most of us have some very interesting value conflicts when it comes to the old career), and then a series of growth and success strategies, powerful exercises, and the revelation that paradigm shifts are necessary to assist in our surviving and thriving in our new "net-less" environment.

The rationale for the paradigm shifts?: an ever-changing global economy that increases competition, decreases profits and margins, and heightens the emphasis on human resources as the key to gaining the competitive edge. Far from advocating a cold-hearted Darwinian approach to business, "Working Without A Net" celebrates the capacity of people within an organization to resolve their differences, pursue corporate goals, and successfully met the challenges of today's high-risk business world. - Ted DeCorte, M.A.

Excellent explanation of the new economy and how to survive.
This book is an excellent read for anyone who wants to survive and thrive in the new economy. The world has become a much smaller and closer-knit group of companies and customers. Learning how to keep and get new customers and working relationships with other companies and co-workers is essential in this new economic environment that we are in. This book provides the tools and recommendations that will help anyone (from a CEO to the mail clerk) understand the new realities of business and what needs to happen to survive and thrive in the new economy.

An excellent guide for anyone that wants to succeed and climb the ladder of success.

Great book!
A real eye opener to what is wrong with corporate life today. Both an education and motivation to start you on a path to improving both your professional and personal life through managing change. Will recommend this book to everyone I know.

Lessons on saving your marriage even when you don't want to.
I am a divorced single mom, so why did I read a book that focuses on how to keep a marriage together? I want to know for next time how to avoid the pitfals that I succumbed to before. This was an inspiring and insightful book. I recommend it for single, married, and divorced people. There is much to be learned by anyone.

Inspirational!
This book is a collection of true stories about marriages in trouble and how the couples overcame these problems. There were various problems like abuse, alcoholism, illness, infidelity, and depression. This book showed that despite the worst of problems, things will get better if we keep focused on God. This books provides inspiration for my own marriage. The commentary at the end of each story by Gary Smalley was very helpful, too, in analyzing what went wrong in each relationship and how the couple worked through their problems.

This book should be given out to every newlywed.
I bought this book after 22 years of marriage and it was a wonderful resource. The book contains several stories of married couples who struggled through some VERY hard times to stay married. It provides a rare keyhole peak into the intimate details and struggles of couples' lives.

And it proves that the great majority of good marriages come at a cost - of much self-sacrifice, letting go, prayer and a deep desire to remain with your spouse, even when the going gets *extremely* rough. It includes stories of verbal and physical abuse and marriages healed and restored through prayer and patience.
