my favorite victoria holt book!
a girl marries. she soon frinds herself a widow with a baby on the way. the heir to a fortune. some one is trying to put her in a nut house but her lover saves her. my favorite quote from the book " he lend over me and looked at the baby and said there's only one thing wrong he's not mine, that was his praposil for marrage" the 8th victoria holt book i read.

It's my favorite Victoria Holt novel
I first read this novel when I was in junior high school. It was the second novel I read by Victoria Holt, but it was the first one that made me want to read more of her books with enthusiasm. It was very hard to put down this book after the first chapter. The suspense kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen next. Victoria Holt is a great romantic-suspense author and it's really sad that she's no longer around to write more books. And I'm even more disappointed that "Kirkland Revels" is no longer in print. My copy of the book was borrowed and I never got it back. I don't even remember who borrowed it. It was back in the 1970s. So now all I have are fond memories of the book and the story. I wish the publisher would print this book again (hardbound). I need this book to add to my collection of Victoria Holt novels.

One of my favorites
This is the first nowel of Victoria Holt I read, since then she is one of my favorite writers. If you want to read some books by her, Kirkland Revels is a good choice for begining.

Lady Windermere's Fan
I just wanted to say that i really love this play and that i highly suggest that everyone should read this funny and witty masterpiece. Lady Windermere is so naive but i liked the bit when she threatens to slap Mrs Erlynne across the face. That's what i call Girl Power!!

Anyway, i wanted to know if there are any notes to accompany this play. I need some notes that focus on the language of the play, social context, characters, etc.

I would be eternally grateful if anyone could help.

How can women survive in victorian society
Oscar Wilde entirely dedicates this play to the exploration of the way a woman can be saved from destruction in this society of appearances. A woman was the victim of an imbroglio in the past and abandoned her daughter. This woman comes back and the daughter ignores her relation to her. She is brought back into societry by the daughter's husband who knows the truth but does not want his wife to know it. But there is some kind of malediction that flies over the heads of these women. The daughter nearly does the same mistake as her mother but she is saved by her mother who accepts to be tainted in her daughter's place. Bus Oscar Wilde must think there is some kind of reward for a good deed and all is well that ends well, and this play has a happy ending. In spite of all the melodramatic sentimentalese atmosphere, Oscar Wilde definitely explores in this play the great disadvantage of a woman in society. Men can do nearly all they want. Women are extremely limited and have to walk a very straight and narrow line. Oscar Wilde seems to be ahead of his time as for the fate of women: he seems to aspire for real equality for them, though he shows in all possible ways that this is impossible in his society.

Wildely Entertaining
My first experience reading Oscar Wilde... and certainly not my last.

Wilde's sardonic wit and ineffable satire had me enchanted from page one. Wilde writes with devastatingly appealing witticisms, and with a style and cleverness matched by few other authors. It is said that he is one of the more oft-quoted authors in the English language, and I now understand why.

In addition to axioms and aphorisms of pure genius, the plot both captivates and surprises the reader. Lady Windermere discovers that her husband has been cheating on her, and a folly of misunderstandings and poor advice then unfolds; all the while satirizing society.

Love - Your Most Important Possession
As I recently thumbed through my copy of this book, I was brought back to when I first read this, in 1996. As usual, when I am reading a book, I walk around with that book, along with something to write with, and on.

There was a stranger who came up to me and looked at me with both sadness and pity in her eyes.

She asked me, "Is this really a problem for you?"

Anyone who would ask this question, and especially to a stranger, in my opinion, probably is in denial of his or her need for greater self-expression - this is what this book is about.

Who wouldn't be looking to be a better listener; more compassionate; and fully in this moment?

We are all bombarded with social scripts; childhood expectations; and unfinished past business.

And we deserve to be more alive, more fully in the present moment, regardless of our interlocutor's beliefs.

As we grow, we search for greater peace of mind, while we experience new "opportunities."

This book is about finding peace of mind, out of healthy choices.

One of the most valuable affirmations in this book, simply stated is, "I am worth it!"

When one says this, out loud, 10 times in the morning, then 10 times in the evening; and it is said enthusiastically, you experience more breakthroughs in your life than you have even considered making.

Read this book to reaffirm your right to honor your potential and celebrate everything that you are.

AMAZING EXCELLENT BOOK... MUST BUY
This book is so excellent and powerful, I don't even know where to begin. Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse is a wonderful writer who makes her points very clearly and concisely. It is very well organized and very easy to understand. This book is very quick and easy to read.

She brings greater understanding to the reader about how to develop TRUE self-esteem. Alot of different books I had read, mis-lead the reader into thinking that self-esteem is developed by externalizing our happiness... (ie. lose weight, get an education, learn a talent or language, get a new hair, buy a new dress...) All these things draw our gaze "outwards". But many people develop these outward attributes, and still feel miserable... (ie. Whitney Houston... beautiful, talented, rich, famous, but challenged with drug addiction and an unhealthy love relationship)

Sharon makes the reader realize that self-esteem is found by connecting to our inner self (or inner child). This inner child is the repository of self-worth (page 23).

There are many things explained in this book that helps the reader understand himself/herself and how to overcome our negative tendencies.

Just a wonderful book. ... By connecting to our Essence/Inner Child/Psyche through feelings, we develop TRUE SELF-WORTH.

I have been doing what these books have told me to do, and the changes in my life are incredible and quite dramatic. ...

Best Book I've Read on This Topic
I've read so many "self-help" books, I could have been a Therapist if I'd had my head on straight! This book was recommended to me as the only one needed to get on the right track, and it definitely did. It's a gentle, easy read, and I highly recommend it.

If you only read one book this year, read this one
I heard Tony Jeary speak in person in Eatontown NJ on 3/25/04 and bought his book at the seminar. The insights into making presentations to groups of any size that he provides in this book are incredible and very relevant to anyone who wishes to communicate more effectively. Through the school of hard knocks, he has truly mastered the art and science of making quality presentations.

This book reveals his common sense secrets. If you are serious about planning meetings and presentations that get real results (not snores or rolling eyeballs), this is the book for you. I am planning a new presentation using his 3D outline and find it extremely helpful and useful. His writing style is both engaging and informative. An absolute must read.

Relevant and practical advise
As Tony Jeary points out in this point we can make a profound impact on others, or not, based on the way we present ourselves to them. The book is enlightening in that it really does increase your awareness of dozens of opportunities we face each day to present our ideas, opinions, and thoughts.

The book is based on his research and provides very practical (not just theoritical) ways to better communicate a message and make sure this message reaches people with the desired effect. Of particular value has been the ideas and techniques he writes about for dealing with the anxiety many feel prior to making a presentation.

A helpful, practical book--highly recommended
I really enjoyed Life Is a Series of Presentations, and I don't usually read books like these since I don't do much public speaking. But Jeary's book is not just for speakers--it's for everybody. It was amazing for me to realize how many "presentations" I make in a day, and how much smoother my life can be if I am aware of these opportunities and harness them effectively. This is one of those books that will change your life.

More please!!!
I have been a huge fan of David Handler since I read the first "Hoagy" novel. This latest installment is excellent! Witty, sharp, and leaves you guessing till the end.

Stewart Hoag mysteries get better every time out
As one who has read all the Stewart Hoag mysteries by David Handler I feel qualified in saying each one is better than the last! Not only are the books getting thicker, they are getting more rewarding and entertaining. The characters, plots, dialog, humour and Handler's voice improve with age. In this outing, an old Ivy League classmate of Hoag's is accused of murdering women. The suspect clearly fits the bill given his violent and abusive past . . . and present! Though 'King Tut' Tuttle is suspected even by his good friend Hoag of committng these murders, 'Hoagy' owes it to himself, Tuttle and their faded friendship to investigate as only he can. The story is filled with great characters, moments of suspense and enough likely suspects and red herrings to keep the reader entertained and guessing throughout. Readers familiar with this series will be happy to know Lulu, Merilee Nash and even Hoag's beloved vintage Jaguar continue their usual prominent roles.

Thrilling and excellent
David Handler continues to amaze me with his wonderfully witty works of the adventures of "Hoagy". His books are always thrilling, exciting, and leave you guessing until the end. "The Man Who Loved Women to Death" is no exception.

An Inspiration to my Art Students!
Last year I used this book as a resource for a special high school art unit that I developed entitled "Sacred Circles." In addition to learning about circular artwork in various cultures and world religions, students used Judith's beautiful illustrations and step by step guides to create mandalas of their own. (...) This is a book that I still have available in my classroom and students continue to refer to it (independently!) to advance their drawing techniques. SO glad I bought this!

Radiantly Inspiring
The beauty of the mandalas pictured in the book intimidated me because it had been so many years since I'd created any art. I didn't think I could do it. But I did it and I'm extremely grateful to Judith Cornell for writing this book. Working on the exercises at home, alone, is not the same experience as it would be in a group. The group can offer a creative support level that helps each individual surpass previous achievements. However, I'm so happy with the mandalas I created as a result of these exercises that I've put each one up on the wall. And, even more important, I've continued to draw. No more creative blocks for me!

Incredibly AWE inspiring!
Mandala: Luminous Symbols for Healing, by Judith Cornell, is absolutely the most incredibly beautiful book I've ever held in my hands. Holding and looking at it, even before reading, is like a sacred experience. Is it the beauty of the lay-out and illustrations? The very real spiritual impact of the mandalas presented, both historical and contemporary? A moment of healing even in the first moment's gasp of awe while browsing its pages? One even begins to caress its binding. One of my favorite activities now is to present it to friends and watch their faces--their eyes pop open, their jaws drop in amazement--and hear the quick intake of breath as its color begins to radiate into their awareness. Beyond the first impression, reading took me to awesome depths and insights regarding ultimate reality, syntheses I'd previously long puzzled. Don't miss this dazzling yet holy experience. Look, read, and practice the simple yet brilliant art-as-at-one-ment exercises for the depth of your life.

How to use ACIM to Forgive your Parents
This audio came just at the right time for me. It requires a knowlege of A Course in Miracles to follow it well.

At some stage we must make the transition from viewing our "parents" as unique and special and viewing them as "just people" who probably (with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight) did the best they could.

Marianne Williamson makes the point that they are not our spiritual parents..God is..they simply are our biological parents who gave us the chance to be here.

At some point we must change from being the sons and daughters of parents to being adults "just like our parents".

Marianne Williamson helps this process

A great gem
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest. Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing. Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly. Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being.

Miracles Do Happen
This is my favorite piece by Marianne Williamson so far. Not only did I feel a great sense of relief and peace after beginning to forgive my parents and let go of much of the anger and resentment I felt, but I actually felt the universe shift in my favor. For example I began to let go of the resentment I felt towards my mother for not supporting me, and then the strangest thing happened. She began to support me like never before. My universe shifted, and no matter how small it was, it was a miracle. If you are ready for a miracle in your life, listen to or read anything by Marianne Williamson.

Lewis & Clark : The Journey of the Corps of Discovery
Published in Audio CD by Random House Audio (04 May, 2004)
Authors: Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns
Amazon base price: $17.50

Having chronicled the Civil War and baseball, among other subjects, filmmaker Ken Burns collaborates with historian Dayton Duncan to craft this moving portrait of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-6. The story is one of individual triumph and tragedy, and its cast members--a slave, several women who save the expedition at key moments, and veterans of a bitterly fought revolution--represent the early Republic in microcosm. Packed with well-chosen illustrations, Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery is a fine synthesis of what we know about Meriwether Lewis and William Clark today, knowledge that remains shrouded in a certain mystery.
Average review score:

Interesting, entertaining, and all around satisfying
I enjoyed this book completely...it really gave me a sense of the human experience of the journey, and made me appreciate just what an incredible accomplishment it was. The illustrations really add to the enjoyment of the book, as do the excerpts from the journals of several of the men. I also liked the background information on what goals were actually behind the exploration and how they worked to meet those goals. There's only one reason that I didn't give this book 5 stars, and that's because it lacks a good map to help understand where they were during some of the events described. But that can be found in other works, and this really is a good introducion to Lewis and Clark...it's a relatively easy read but full of interesting facts and adventures.

Wonderful
I give high praise to this book and this reading. You will learn so much about the journey, and you'll feel the cold of the winters and the wonderment of their adventures. Taken from their actual journals, this book is even better than "Undaunted Courage". p.s. the unabridged is even better.

Simply Amazing
This audio is a great telling of this amazing journey. Any history buff should order this and play it over and over. The facts of the ride and the aftermath of the characters will leave you in awe.

Much better than Waumbaugh
I like Ed Dee's books. His dialouge is fast and very funny at times. His two cops have their problems, but they still do their job and do it well. Unlike Waumbaugh's drunken idiots who don't deserve to wear their badges. All of Ed Dee's books ring with authenticity and they move fast. I've never put one of his books down because I found myself bored or disgusted with the lack of accuracy. Sonething that I have done many times with Waumbaugh, won't even read his books anymore. I'm a police officer in the West and I've only worn a uniform for a short while. But while my city may not be the Big Apple and my department's entire force wouldn't fill up one small precinct building Ed Dee writes with complete authenticity. Some things are the same in law enforcemnt no matter where you are. Now this is a general review of his works, but Little Boy Blue is good with a couple of twists at the end. Read it as well as all his other books. You won't regret it.

J Briant
Again the author ED DEE brings to the reader a gripping tale that illustrates hard working Detectives Ryan and Gregory investigating the death of a young cargo handler and in doing so brings to the reader an action-packed hunt for a murderer. It shows the push and pull of families testing their loyalty AND some of the betrayal COMES ALIVE. I was saddened by the killing of the young man. It is a must read for it lifts the cover into a great story that only DEE could create. The Author is brilliant in creating emotion in this fast moving story. Sensational.

The real McCoy. By a cop about crooks.
If you have read either of Ed Dee's other two books, you will do what I did after reading the first one: which is to run down to the bookstore and buy the other two. "Little Boy Blue" is a fast-paced, highly entertaining novel written by an author who knows how the good guys talk and the bad guys talk and what they say to each other and about each other. The dialogue is so good you'll think you're actually eavesdropping. Read it. You'll like it.

A Long Finish
Published in Audio CD by Chivers Audio Books (May, 2003)
Authors: Michael Dibdin and Michael Kitchen
Amazon base price: $79.95
Fresh from the successful investigation of a series of crimes in Naples, that admirably devious and dour Italian police inspector Aurelio Zen returns to his office in Rome to discover that a new set of bureaucrats is in power--with plans to punish him for his success by sending to him Sicily to fight the Mafia. Fate, in the form of a powerful film director, offers a way out: Zen is to go instead to Piedmont, where the murder of a noted winemaker--apparently by his son and heir--threatens the future of one of the film director's favorite vintages. Even though Zen is a Venetian by birth and drinks "fruity, fresh vino sfuso from the Friuli intended to be consumed within the year" as the director sarcastically notes, he can still see how important the case can be to his future--especially if it keeps him away from deadly Sicily. Not only wine but also truffles are involved in a growing series of murders in the area around Alba, and Michael Dibdin (an English writer who lives in Seattle but must spend lots of time in Italy) once again manages to capture the heart, soul, and stomach of the region. Zen, whose personal life is gradually revealed and expanded in each book in the series, finds out several surprising things about being a father in this one. Previous Zen encounters: Cosi Fan Tutti, Dead Lagoon, Ratking, Vendetta. --Dick Adler
Average review score:

"A Long Finish" Another Michael Dibdin mystery/travel guide.
Mr. Dibdin has done it again! The Aurelio Zen mysteries are taking us all over Italy. From Perugia in "Ratking", Sardinia in "Vendetta", Rome in "Cabal", Venice in "Dead Lagoon", Naples in "Cosi Fan Tutti" and now Alba in "A Long Finish". I think these books keep getting better and better. Aurelio Zen is my favorite detective. Keep 'em coming Mr. Dibdin!

One of the Series Best
After partially digesting some extremely personal revelations revealed during his stay in Naples, Aurelio Zen still finds himself reeling. To top it off, he finds that after his headlining success in exposing the menacing presence behind the 'Clean Streets' campaiagn in Naples, he is to be shuffled down to Sicily as part of a new Anti-Mafia squad. Only the influence of a rich film director who after hearing of the murder of his favorite vintner cannot bear the thought of the famous wine not being produced that year simply because the only man who can accomplish this feat is being held for his father's murder. Zen's task then takes him to Asti in the Piedmont where as he attempts to accomplish his assignment--the release of the vintner's son--he stumbles upon a sequence of murders with roots in the past which he must ferret out with the tenacity of the region's truffle dogs. As usual Zen's methods are not always ethical; his determination to get the job done does not always insure that the guilty person is punished by the proper channels--although serendipitiously Zen manages to justify his means with a noble ending. Nevertheless, his exploits in this installment are so far the most satisfying of the series. Zen's sonambulism in the beginning of the novel emphasizes his distraught over the goings-on in Naples--think Al Pacino sleeplessly squinting in 'Insomnia'---which are compounded by equally stressful information imparted by a mysterious young lady. Dibdin's portrayal of Mignot, one of the truffle hunters, utterly stuns with a skin-crawling realism. Dibdin expertly mixes a lethal cocktail of greed and madness to create a wonderful melange of men whose livings thrive on the bounty of the earth, one way or another. Highly recommended.

The Well-Fed Detective
Aurelio Zen, Italian detective, is pleased to accept an assignment to the Piedmont region in Italy - after all, it will keep him out of Sicily, where the mafia awaits him. He is directed to investigate the murder of a well-known vinter, or winemaker. However, the motives of the well-placed film director who has him sent to Alba are not entirely clear - he is not concerned in the least with who killed the man, rather that his son is cleared of the murder so that he can produce that year's vintage of wine.

When Zen arrives, however, more mysteries await him. He begins to get menacing telephone calls in his hotel rooms, and wakes up with a mysterious gash on his forehead. Then, two more members of the formerly sleepy community turn up dead. Zen must contend with these murders, all the while getting his fill of the region's delicious wine and white truffles. The clues lead to a logical ending - but the mysterious residents of Alba might know more than the famous detective in the end.

Telling any more would reveal too much of this fantastic story! The twists and turns of this mystery are great fun, and the writing is superb. All in all, very entertaining.
