Game and the Glory, The

As the world watched Brandi Chastain set up for her penalty kick, Michelle Akers lay on a training table beneath the Rose Bowl recovering from her efforts in the Women's World Cup final. She had been given two liters of fluid intravenously but was still woozy and it didn't register, at first, that Chastain had scored and the U.S. team had won. At her insistence, the doctor removed her IVs and she staggered out onto the field to join the celebration. As she stood in the center of the field, the capacity crowd began chanting "Aaa-kers! Aaa-kers! Aaa-kers!"

U.S. Women's Team coach Tony DiCicco calls Akers "the best women who's ever played the game." Her fellow 1999 Women's World Cup champions describe her as "a true warrior" and "the heart and soul of this team." In The Game and the Glory, Akers tells the story of her life both on and off the field, and the faith and determination that keep her going--despite a troubled home life, countless injuries, and her battle against CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome). Akers's candor is refreshing; she doesn't paint herself as an angel or take a holier-than-thou attitude. Her Christian faith, simply put, is what allows her to succeed. An inspirational book. --Sunny Delaney

The Best Book EVER!!!
I play select and I alway enjoy reading books on awsome soccer players. When my friend told me about this book I jumped at the oppertunity to read yet another soccer book. I read it and couldnt put it down. As a Catholic I diffently could relate and found it pretty cool we share the same faith.
It was a very good and inspiring book! IM GONNA BE THE NEXT MICHELLE AKERS SO WATCH OUT AMERICA CUZ HERE I COME!!!

A True Inspiration
Michelle Akers writes a truly inspirational story. As you read The Game and the Glory you feel as if you know Michelle personally. The book is easy to relate to because she tells her story on such a personal level. We see Michelle grow through her relationships, her spirituality, her CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome), and of course soccer.
Michelle is honest about the carefree wonders of childhood. She tells about two of her childhood dreams: One of being the next Mean Joe Green of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the other dream of being an Olympian. Although, for Michelle, childhood is not always carefree dreams. When she is only in the sixth grade, she struggles to understand the reason behind her parents' divorce. Ironically, even Michelle herself cannot believe when she goes through her own divorce. Michelle, with the guidance of a few friends and through her struggles, finds a relationship that will help her cope with all of her problems.
As a child Michelle always found mass to be boring and going to church on Sunday was never something to look forward to. It is not until Michelle is in high school, with the guidance of a teacher, that she truly finds a relationship with God. However, she gets distracted from this newfound relationship quite soon. After her divorce, Michelle realizes that there is something missing from her life: God. She turns to God at this point in her life, and this time she holds on to what she has found. Michelle promotes her Christianity in a way that no one else has ever done. She founds an organization called the Soccer Outreach International. An organization to promote Christianity in sports especially soccer. Michelle did not only turn to God for answers about relationships and soccer, but also about her CFIDS.
Not long after her World Cup experience in 1991, Michelle begins to suffer from CFIDS. However, Michelle is not diagnosed with CFIDS until 1994. From 1991 to 1994 she did not know exactly what was causing her to feel always fatigued and never well. Michelle has done what no other athlete that competes at the level she competes at has done. She played while suffering with CFIDS. This truly shows her unstoppable compassion for the game.
Michelle played many sports as a child, but soccer was her first true love. When she was only nine years old she attended a soccer camp. During the soccer camp she competed in a juggling contest to see who could juggle for the longest. Michelle stayed out at the field juggling for hours without once loosing control of her ball. The camp director stayed and counted her 5,392 touches, which shattered the previous record set by boy who went on to play collegiate soccer at Duke. This is only one of the amazing stories about Michelle and soccer. Through soccer Michelle has traveled to many countries around the world and established lifelong friendships. She is an original member of the first United States Women's National Soccer Team of 1985. With the National Team she has won many individual awards and is a 1991 World Cup Champion, a 1996 Olympic Gold Medallist, and 1999 World Cup Champion. Michelle admits that God has carried her through it all and without Him she would have never accomplished everything that she has.
It is amazing to think of how great a person she is and how truly human she is. Michelle has accomplished so much for women's soccer. She opened up a new door for girls around the U.S. by using her position as the best women's soccer player to promote the sport. She is one of the reasons that women's soccer become an official Olympic sport. Michelle is a role model to many not only as a world class soccer player but also through her display of Christianity in her every action. In reading her story I have learned that sometimes you just have to "show up" and let God take care of the rest.

Michelle is awesome, and her faith is unsurpassed
I know I would love this book even if the writing sucked, which it doesn't...it's beatiful. Still, I'm bias. Michelle has been my role model as a soccer player for years, and I've always her respected her deep faith in Jesus Christ. I'm Catholic. I think Michelle's faith is wonderful, after all she has been through. And the fact that she is grateful for her suffering makes her, in my eyes, a true follower of Jesus.

You will enjoy the thoughts of this excellent (tough as nails) soccer player, and Christian who inspires many others who share her faith. Go USA!

PS. Since this book was written, Michelle has retired.

The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions or at least with thousands of tiny compromises. Not too long ago in a church not too far away from where I live, a pastor was forced to resign and was eventually arrested for embezeling church funds. I know of people who are Christians, but are constantly swearing, getting into trouble, bickering, brawling, etc. How many times do you do something you know is wrong then look back afterwards and wonder, how could I have fallen so low? These are some of the troubling issues that Greg Laurie examines in THE GREAT COMPROMISE.

The thesis is quite simple. People don't fall out of a relationship with God all at once. It happens slowly over time; week by week, day by day, moment by moment. Each day we are faced with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of decisions. In each one of those decisions we can choose to press out the best of that decision and give our utmost for His highest or we can choose less than the best and compromise. Oh, it won't hurt if I travel twenty-five miles over the speed limit, everyone else is going thiry miles over. I really feel terrible today, but I'm going to act like everything is dandy. This one little lie won't hurt, after all I'm not hurting anyone. The scenarios are endless, but the consequences are the same. Slowly but surely we make little compromises that end up leading us to fall away from God. Laurie explores some of those decisions and scenarios and gives Biblically-based advice on what we can do to keep from making the Great Compromise.

Great Compromise
I received a free copy from BGEA and have purchased 2 copies since then. This is a great book that absolutely outlines how easy it is to fall into the trap of compromise. It is a must read for teenagers and adults alike. I wish I had read this when I was a young woman. I have given all my copies away and am really interested in obtaining another written copy.

Hits the Nail on the Head
Greg Laurie is a person who delivers the message of the gospel, and the word of God, straight from the Bible. He does it with humor, with compassion, and as a true servant of God, not misrepresenting scripture in any way. I could barely put this great book down, in spite of the fact I found myself convicted up one side and down the other from time to time. But then, as Christians, this is one way we grow. I recommend this book to anyone who has a desire to strengthen their Christian walk, an excellent guide for all of us.

`Active`Meditation
ACTIVE MEDITATION.

Have been breathing now with The Healing Art of Conscious Breathing CD three to four times weekly, for five months or so. In the last week have had a couple of breath/energy encounters. In these my body starts tingling usually around the left thigh and this sensation (usually after an
hour breathing level two and with top-ups of three) suddenly suffuses my whole being...a very powerful and exhilarating sensation. In this my senses are sharply focussed, the body vibrating .

Following the last one, just before I turned on my side, breathing as
Leonard Orr advises-.four shorts and one long.-and I was thrilled to be
able to continue the sensation with the same intensity for several more minutes. This I feel demonstrates that the object of the exercise would be to learn to ultimately access this state naturally, a very exciting and powerful proposition.

When I did relax on my side the words of the song...`Islands in the Stream' popped into consciousness. This brought the idea that the breath is like a cosmic stream; flowing by without us ever noticing it, that is, for those of us who never meditate. When I fell asleep I dreamt of being in bed with a Black woman with a vibrator, from which came the image of the vibration of breath rubbing against the body's electrical field, of head and body (spirit and soul) being `re-fused' together.

In my view the CD opens up the meditative process in a way which is eminently pragmatic. In conjunction with it I am reading and listening to Thic Nhat Hahn, and his wonderfully creative approach to emotional intelligence. As a shrink I encourage clients interested in the CD to do likewise, since his 'Art of Mindful Living' would be the goal of why work with the CD in the first place.

Great Breathwork CD
John's CD can be used by itself, or as a useful adjunct to someone who
already has a breathwork practice. I have found it beneficial in
jump-starting a practice I began a few years back. Thank you John for
this wonderful tool.

Good breathing!
This is the best breathing CD I have yet come across. I have used many others in my private practice and for myself but this one is head and shoulders above the rest.

Amos Walker strikes again
Amos Walker, an alcohol-guzzling embittered Detroit Private investigator has a new case: protect a man who is paying ransom for the retrieval of a valuable illuminated text called: Hours of the Virgin. When his client is killed, Amos feels obligated to investigate, leading him plunging head first into the seamy side of the porn and art-theft industry.

I really enjoyed this latest installment of Loren Estleman's Amos Walker series. In this 'episode,' Amos must confront some ghosts from his past, and make some hard choices.

While I like the Amos Walker series, I keep hoping for Amos to have some FURTHER character development. Sometimes his inability to find a woman, and his habits (alcohol and cigarettes), are a little over-done. Must Amos attempt to smoke in every possible unacceptable place? I.E.: The art institute, the library, the massage parlor, and the Green House? And do we really need this to be described /Every/ time? It's time for Amos to get the nicotine patch!

Overall a solid Amos Walker story.

Amos Walker Comes to Grip with His Past
For a dozen previous novels, P.I. Amos Walker would occasionally mention the death of his former partner and mentor, who was killed during a stakeout of an adulterous husband. But not until "The Hours of the Virgin," do we find out just how much that tragic event affected him. Walker is investigating a case involving a missing fifteenth century manuscript when he is double crossed and disciovers that his partner's murderer is involved. Along the way, Walker learns much about his partner's death, and life, that he never knew. All of this leads to a satisfying climax in which Walker finally confronts some of his own inner demons.

Estlemen's Walker P.I. series is one of the best currently going. Unlike a lot of the fluff that passes for hard boiled detective novels these days, Walker is the real deal. All of his novels have the kind of downcast loneliness that is vital to the genre. The spirit of Phillip Marlowe lives on in Amos Walker.

Another EXCELLENT mystery by the master
As usual, Mr. Estelman does not disapoint. I turned to this book after a real stinker and I was well rewarded. Mr. Estlemen is a great mystery writer for a number of reasons. He's a master with the hardboiled writing. He's prolific (at least one mystery per year). He's good. The last mystery I had read, by another author, I figured out in chapter three. This one held me to the end and it also made me laugh. I think this is an excellent read for mysteryphiles and non-mysteryphiles alike. His writing is pure poetry.

Better than I thought it would be. Complete success.
This could have been a tired collection of name-dropping and anecdotes, but it is not - Yetnikoff offers a gripping tale of driving in ultra-fast lane with no brakes.

Many books of this type are reduced to sorry self-important ramblings because their esteemed authors take themselves too seriously and view "stories of their lives" as something approaching gospels. They want every word in their folios to be significant. Some of them are under impression that they did not simply live their lives but went from one revelation of supreme truth to another. Yetnikoff, meanwhile, is endearingly immune to all this. His story of excess and permanent alcohol-, drug- and sex-induced stupor is told in a relaxed and unassuming way.

And, of course, famous names and their albums and songs really put this into the context of the era. I enjoyed every bit of the book.

The Man Is Brilliant with a capital "B"
For people who live in the central part of the country, Walter's lack of moral compass may put you off. Setting that aside, this guy has bravado. You can't help but want him on your team. He reminds me of a racier David Geffen. I stayed up VERY late reading it...so be prepared to play hooky the next day.

on point
this are the kind of Books that I can't ever put down.Imagine a Label with Mick Jagger,Bruce Springsteen,Bob Dylan,Barbara Streisand&Michael Jackson? I mean you have so stories with so many Important Artists who have shaped&changed Pop culture as we know it.Walter Yentikoff helped blow Up Sony then CBS/Columbia Records into a Power House. Giant Bones

good stuff, but flawed
As usual, Mr. Beagle proves what a master he is at world-creation and character-generation (and his prose is lovely, as usual). Also as usual, the resolutions of the story just never merit their fabulous build-up. (The last three stories are somewhat better in this department than the first three--esp. "Giant Bones" and "Choushi-Wai's Story", tho' you'd expect more spice from any story with Lal and Soukyan in it, even if they are in their 80s, right?) The most glaring example of this was the third story, "The Tragical Historie of the Jiril's Players"--which was really, really good (pretty funny, too)...until the ending! I mean, the build-up is great, but you're so amused and interested in the Players, you kinda wish they'd play a larger role in the outcome! Oh, well. Anyway, despite all this (and they do get better as they go along), it's rare I've read a collection of worth-while fantasy short stories...but this is a good one!

Six Unique Voices - Six Lovely Stories
Set in the world of his previous book, "The Innkeeper's Song," Beagle presents six stand-alone fairy tales in this charming collection. All but one from first person perspective (Lal and Soukyan's last hurrah), Beagle continues to weave strange twists on old forms: the girl who would rather marry a thief, the powerful magician who had no love for power, two old mercenary partners who find a need for reconciliation, and - my favourite - the actors who are privy to a most unusual theatrical performance! As delightful and lyrical as these tales are, however, Beagle's world is bleak, leaving all his characters to live in a catch-as-catch can world. Beagle also feels no need to shrink from or tidy-up the language of his characters, as the first story eminently proves. While this excellent ear for the "voices" of the five story-tellers in this wonderful collection is more than appropriate but necessary to each story, young children who loved "The Last Unicorn" would be advised to wait a few years before delving into this enjoyable anthology.

Like an evening of the very best storytelling...
Since all the stories in "Giant Bones" are either framed by some kind of first-person narrative or directly recounted by a participant-with the exception of "Lal and Soukyan," thus giving that story a particular distinction-reading the book is like nothing so much as spending an evening with a rich and peculiar cast of characters. The narrators are as varied as the tales they tell: an old woman paying a scribe to set down the truth, an old man in an inn telling stories with his friends, a traveling player commiserating with a fellow actor, the professional storyteller Choushi-wai regaling an audience with her favorite tale, and an impatient father recounting the family legend to his son. Each story has its own particular scope, from a disaster of a theatrical production to the clash of a power-hungry queen and a back-country magician, told in vivid, sympathetic prose to which is added the particular pungency of each narrator. Nor does the third-person style of "Lal and Soukyan" do anything to diminish its power. It's not exactly a sequel to "The Innkeeper's Song," as it answers almost none of the questions that the book's ending leaves for the readers to ponder, but it is a welcome reappearance for two beloved characters. By its very ending it seems to preclude any further "sequels" but regardless of its place in any kind of story cycle it's a very good short story and stands quite well on its own. More, it and the other the other five stories flesh out the world which was sketched so vividly, if not explored in depth, in "The Innkeeper's Song." Either as a sequel-of-sorts or as a stand-alone collection, "Giant Bones" is very good. And what more do you want out a book, anyway?

Wonderful Stories told by America's Storyteller
Garrison Keillor is to the spoken story what Mark Twain was to the written - a kind and intelligent sense of humor mixed in with a wickedly insightful knowledge of human nature. His monologues, the "News from Lake Wobegon", have always been the centerpiece of PBS's wildly successful Prairie Home Companion, and I have found none of his stories to be superior to those contained within this collection.

Pastor Inqvist's Trip to Orlando is worth the price of these cassettes alone with the story of the humble Lutheron Minister and his desire to please his Church Deacons and Mrs. Inqvist at the same time. The Gospel Birds is another "church" story, but you'd be wrong if you came to a listen thinking that Mr. Keillor is simply a "holy roller" trying to pound his version of "the gospel" into anyone.

His stories are about what makes us human - our nobleness and our failings - and his storytelling is so skillful, he allows us to hear that our shortcomings are as important in who we are as our triumphs.

The height of the monologue
This is not only a fine collection of monologues from what was arguably the period during which Keillor most popular, it also has gorgeous guitar links provided by Chet Atkins. Just a few seconds of wonderful trademark arpeggios by a guitar genius (and good friend of Keillor's) in between each monologue. I'd listen to an entire CD of just music like that. This is a fine piece of work.

Garrison's Best-Ever recording!
I have virtually all of Keillor's Lake Woebegon works, and this is his finest! "On Meeting Donny Hart" is perhaps the finest tragi-comedy of them all! You'll bust a gut listening to Mazumbo, Gospel Birds, Pastor Ingquist's Trip to Orlando, Mammoth Concert, and Babe Ruth Visits Lake Woebegon-- the whole set is superb. I can't say enough good about this excellent product.

I highly recommend this book for parents who have children who are chronically ill or disabled. I believe that people who find themselves in this situation will also be blessed. This book challenges the readers to take God out of a box and encourages them to envision heaven in a new and exciting way.So throw away the wings and harps and picture a place where there will be nomore tears, no more pain and friendships that will be eternal. We ain't seen nothing yet! Praise God!

Inspiration, Encouragement,
Jodi has given me such a wonderful outlook on life, people and faith. She has hit such a spot in my soul i cannot begin to share this very very special feelig. I feel truly as a soul inside a shell. The shell is nothing if the soul isn't doing. This is what this is about. God Bless this women and know that she has been given a gift and writing is it. Please read this book then discuss it with me. I would love to talk to anyone about it. Also I would love to know if I can get these books on tape. I have a dear friend with Huntington Disease. She cannot read anymore and I intend to give her these on tape to listen to.

MY FAVORITE BOOK--BESIDES THE BIBLE!
Joni truly has her eyes on the "prize"--Heaven! (see I Corinthians 9:24.) This book is so beautiful; it is really beyond words, it speaks from heart to heart. If you are reading this I truly believe you have been sent here and it is God's will for you to buy and read this book.

"Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,

Neither have entered into the heart of man

The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." I Corinthians 2:9 THE HOLY BIBLE

Perhaps Joni is the one exception to the above scripture! It is truly Amazing someone can take the limited scripture we have on Heaven and turn it into an inspiring, moving, exciting, and soul-stirring book! I wish this was in every home in the world! Once you start reading it is almost impossible to put down! And if you do, it won't be very long until you pick it up again! "Heaven Your Real Home" will make your soul ache and yearn for Heaven! Really wanting it will definitely help you get there!

I leave you with the words of Jesus: "NOT EVERYONE WHO SAYS TO ME, 'LORD, LORD,' SHALL ENTER THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN BUT HE WHO DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER IN HEAVEN." Matthew 7:21 THE HOLY BIBLE

I really liked this book. It was just a plain, good story as well as a non-typical romance. It is even somewhat unusual for a historical western romance. It takes place a few years after the end of Civil War at a fort in the upper Midwest plains.

Major Andrew Garrett was a Union soldier sent undercover to New Orleans during the Civil War. While in New Orleans, he met and married Julia Robichard. Within days of their marriage, Andrew departed New Orleans to report his findings and planned to return for his bride. Instead, his identity is discovered and he is eventually sent to a Confederate prison camp. Meanwhile, Julia's uncle has their marriage annulled and she is banished and sent away. When Julia reaches her new home with a broken heart - believing Andrew used her for his Union activities - she meets a man and marries quickly. Now years later, she is looking for her husband who has proven to be a gambler and has gone west seeking fortune. She and her eight-year-old daughter are penniless and have nowhere to turn. So they head west as well and end up at an Army fort in Montana Territory.

Major Garrett now is second in command at the Montana fort. He believes that is still married to Julia. Andrew has no knowledge of the annulment and believes Julia betrayed him as well. Their reunion is bitter but both soon discover that neither betrayed the other. They also realize their love for each other has not died. This is a precious story of a wonderful man who takes care of a seemingly helpless woman and her daughter under harsh living conditions. Although a portion of the story hinges on finding Julia's husband, a larger part of the story concerns the daughter and her initial rejection of Andrew. She wants her father and believes Andrew is somehow in the way. It is heart rending to read of her actions towards him and his attempts to gain her acceptance. But the most action in the book is the love relationship between Andrew and Julia. It is a mature relationship that recognizes responsibility. Although both leads are hardheads and a bit belligerent, they also have very tender moments. Both the hero and heroine are well-written and likable characters. Lovelace doesn't have to resort to the usual romance misunderstanding ploys. Her characters relate to each other truthfully.

The realism of frontier life is very well written. Even as a history buff, I learned many things about 19th century Army life and recalled some of the sadder facts of the Indian uprisings. Actual famous Native Americans and white men are included in the background of the story. While this book is well written, romantic, and historically interesting, it also contains some good sexual chemistry. The sensual scenes rate about a 4.0 out of 5.0 (see More About Me for rating guidelines).

This is my first Lovelace book and it certainly will not be my last. At this very moment, I am going to visit Amazon and conduct a search for more of her books.

Read It In Two Days!
I met Merline when she was the Base Commander at Eglin AFB, FL. She's a wonderful lady, warm, friendly and humorous! I've read other books she has written, but this was the best! I couldn't put it down until I had finished it! Now I can't wait for the sequel!

Wild, Wyoming plains is the backdrop...........
.....for the setting of romance between Fort Laramies Major Andrew Garrett and New Orleans belle, Julia Bonneaux. Author Merline Lovelace uses the written word to draw a beautiful picture of this compeling saga in all its primative glory. I have not read a book with a western theme that I've so thoroughly enjoyed in many years. In fact, this is the first story I've read by Ms. Lovelace, thanks to a friend loaning it to me. Now that I'm a fan, I'll definitely be on the lookout for all the other books she's had published. Loved the history she wove in through out the book about the Dakota Territory, and the special attention to detail in the treatment of the Sioux Indians during this period. This is a book I'll want to hold on to for a second read!

Helpful Practical Advice
Grossman reminds his readers of the basic principles of success that can be immediately applied for direct positive results. He couples that with insightful analysis, such as his thoughts on opportunity which he says "will not be labeled 'opportunity.' It will be hidden. You've got to find it" (p. 35). The book is filled with motivational quotes from myriad sources. A lot of the principles he includes are from the Bible. Take for example his admonition on creating your best self. He calls it the law of self-determination and says, "you are now and you will become what you think about" (p. 116). This is from the book of Proverbs. From the New Testament he teaches what he calls the law of compensation and reminds us "as ye sow, so shall ye reap" (p. 116).
Books like this one help a person to stay focused on the way life really works. Near the end of the book, he sums this up by noting "self-esteem is truly a self fulfilling prophecy" (p. 197). This book could do a lot of good for a lot of people if its principles were applied.
