Ken Hutcherson is the man!
There is nothing better than hearing Ken Hutcherson preach and the only thing that comes close is reading his books and imagining him saying it. An incredibly gifted communicator with great Biblical insights. You will get more out of this book than any other book written about the church or the book of Acts. A great commentary on Acts and also just an enjoyable read. You've got to read it and then go find him on the internet and listen to one of his sermons. You'll love it.

Spirit-guided, humerous look at what the church could be
"Hutch"'s love of Christ and his straight-talking humor shine through his scripturally based look at the first church described in Acts. I "happened upon" this book in search of why I feel incomplete in my large denominational church, and I have come to discover through Brother Hutch's spirit-guided analysis that several crucial elements are lacking in many churches. If you also feel that there is something missing in your spiritual growth and experience in your church, this book will help you to see what is lacking by looking at God's holy word in an honest light. I highly recommend it to those in any church who are seeking to be part of God's power here on Earth.

A Book to help set the Church Straight!
I read this book, and I found it to be a wonderful piece of literature. One that is designed to help "The Church" come back to the model of the New Testament, to be a Church that is dynamic and Pro-Active; a Church where GOD is at the Helm and where lives are being dramatically changed; a Church where traditionalism, where it does not stay true to the Word of GOD, is shown the door; a Church where Denominationalism is eliminated; where racism is non-existant (and shown to be the human institution it is); in other words, this book guides us through a book (the Book of Acts) in THE Book (The Bible), and shows us that we are not all we could be because we have drifted away from GOD to do our own thing and that we should get back to GOD and line up with HIS Will and do HIS Thing.

Cider With Rosie

West Country Childhood
This is a beautifully written book, in which the author recounts memories of his childhood in West Country England at the end of World War One. Laurie Lee's mother struggled to bring up a large family on her own, as they were abandoned by her husband, who chose to live his life away from them in London.

Lee paints an evocative picture of rural life as seen through a child's eyes: the everyday trials, the local characters, humerous and moving incidents, even the colours and smells are conveyed to the reader.

This type of writing is part of a powerful and enduring image in English popular culture - one of a pre-modern rural "ideal" England, now forever lost. I suppose you could read "Cider with Rosie" with that kind of romantic eye, but in truth this is a far more honest work: Lee states that "our village was no pagan paradise, neither were we conscious of showing tolerance". Crime, and other social problems, did exist. Infant mortality was high by modern standards (Lee's early life was punctuated by serious illnesses and one of his sisters died in early childhood). Education was barely minimal. Living conditions were often poor (I doubt that many people would think that finding a dead mouse inside their loaf of bread was a quaint event).

A very good read, not only for the delightful prose and insight into a child's life, but for the realities it reveals.

The Hills are Dying with the Sound of Lee
I happen to live in the Cotswolds, the setting for this beautiful book, this Monet of literature. And, complying with the below reviews, I have to say that Stroud has become a concrete river, choked with litter, sidelined with Burger Stars, neon lights; a MacDonalds is in the blue print stages. Hills are lined with new developments. It's like, and I quote my mother, "A disease is spreading."

Yet there are places untouched by Americanisms, consumerism, electricity (and here I apologise, as this becomes less of a review, more an account of personal experience). But there are still rivers afloat with leaves, valleys deep that welcome sunsets. They frost the sky in winter, burn it by summer.

"There's beauty in decay," as someone said. Haven't got a clue who. But there you go. Although dying of shallow needs and commercial interests, snippets of the old way can be found. And in all their glory, too.

On my Top Ten List.
This book was required reading during my childhood and, of course, I couldn't have dragged myself more slowly through it. How wise we become with age. This is an astonishing book. Lee is such a master of description that, after only a few pages, you slowly start to smell the fresh country air and hear the languid sounds of summer as you are inescabably drawn into the world of his childhood - a world that you realize has already faded into the mists of history. But this special time has not been lost - it has been captured forever in this irreplacable series of pictures. The people in these stories become more real than seems possible with only pen and ink: his characterizations are as clever as anything by Dickens or Dostoevski, and he catches the very essence of the sights, sounds and people around him with a charm unmatched by any other English writer. But this is not a story-book universe: the people in his young life have all the frailty, vanity, delight and tragedy that you would expect in any small community - but what other has been crystallized with such talent and wisdom. A wonderful work of art.

a maritime master piece
To recommand for all readers to buy, read, and re-read for n number of times. fantastic book

Another great Thriller by the Master!
Another great MacLean classic. In this book the hero is an American athlete, an immigrant from eastern Europe. He is recruited by the CIA and is to undertake and unimaginable mission. He, of course, succeeds, but not without the extreme difficulties that macLean's heroes always face. The story twists are awesome and the ending is both expected and surprising. A great read.

Spys Under the Big Top
There are lots of surprising twists in this story including a final surprise in the last sentence. MacLean did a very good job when he wrote this book.

Love the book; like their notation
I agree with all the other reviewers... this is a great book for beginners and advanced (as well as folks somewhere in the middle, like me).

One thing I didn't expect to like, since I can read regular music notation, was their concocted music notation. To my surprise, I like theirs better. It's very intuitive, and after a while, you can pretty much sight-read the rhythms. If I hear/see a conga pattern I like in the future, I'll probably write it down using their notation.

Very clear and simple way of learning the Congas
Very recommended! I think Alan Dworsky used a very clear graphic way of teaching the Conga playing, without getting into music reading instead, he uses symbols for the diferent strokes, and easy numbers. It is great for begginers but stil a good book for advanced players, because it goes through many aspects of the conga.
If you are into conga playing, get this book for the price of half a conga lesson I am sure you will get some mileage out of it. I have been playing congas for years and I discovered a few things in this book I didn't know. Go for it! (...)

More than I expected
As a beginning Conga drummer, I was not sure how much could be learned from a book. I keep playing the patterns over and over and I get a little faster and smoother all the time. The CD lets me match the sound. I am starting lessons soon but I know this book will be there during and after the lessons. It's like having a private, personal instructor. Excellent.

Thinking outside the box....
I read Mary Catherine Bateson's book COMPOSING A LIFE when it was first issued some years ago. I had read her mother's biography BLACKBERRY WINTER, and I wanted to know more about the child raised by the woman who wrote COMING OF AGE IN SAMOA. Bateson's mother was married three times -- twice to anthropologists, including Gregory Bateson, Mary Catherine's father and Margaret Mead's third husband.

I was pleasantly surprised by Mary Catherine's strong individual personality and the inspirational tone of her book. Bateson definitely escaped her parents shadow. Having famous parents who study other people's children doesn't mean your life will be perfect or easy. Mary Catherine had to find her own way and compose her own life. Finding her way meant "stepping outside the box" or realizing that she could make choices at any point. She did not have to conform to society's notion of the phases of life (maybe her mother's study of "coming of age" had some effect on her novel thinking?).

Bateson's book helped me to think about my own life differently. I found the courage to go back to school at age 28 (I was a high school dropout with three small children), earn a B.A., M.A. and complete all the coursework for a PhD. Today, I am a a subject matter expert for one of the Federal Government's leading statistical agencies. At age 28, I had no idea how far I could go, or that I even wanted to go there. Mary Catherine Bateson was one of those pioneering women who helped me realize it is possible to change your life.

Subtly inspirational.
I can't remember why I investigated, ordered and then read this book other than it was written by Margaret Mead's daughter and I wanted to find out what the woman was like personally. What I found when I read the book was quite different. I felt such affinity with much that was presented about the lives of the women that I recommended the work to a friend. It is interesting that we both highlighted an event in Mary Bateson's life that we both had experienced in similar intensity. Bateson's candid verbalisation of the effect of the experience has helped to heal the wounds in both my friend and myself.

A Pleasant Accident
I was quite pleased to have accidentally stumbled onto this book in a search to find materials focused on the concept of "corporate anthopology". Like Ayn Rand's ability to model her concepts of epistemology in her fictional novels, Mary Catherine exemplifies the work of a cultural anthropologist by sharing her personal observations of her own life and the lives of others. I was so sparked by the "personal jewels" I was unable to uncover for my own use that I can't wait to follow on to read her next book, which I've just ordered online...

Another great read!...
It's wonderful when an author can create a sequel that's just as good as the first book in a series. This is one of those occasions. This book picks up where the first left off and thankfully is just as good. Like the first book, this story is full of drama, adventure, and excitement. The characters grow as they learn from their experiences, and new characters add more interest and plot twists. I'd recommend this book -- even if you don't typically read this type of fiction. It's that good.

Corridor of Storms
This book (like all of Sarabande's books) is worth reading more than once.

Enthralling!
I picked up this book along with the first in the series, "Beyond the Sea of Ice" never having heard of the series or the author, in a used book store. I have never in my life been so pleasantly surprised as I have been by these two books. "Corridor of Storms" kept me up every night for a week at least an hour past my usual bedtime; I was so enthralled by the wonderful characters. Anything can and does happen in William Sarabande's vividly animated land of ice and precarious survival. The author is not the least bit afraid to take chances and write out characters in sudden and shocking situations, which keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, never taking any character for granted. I have grown very fond of Torka and his woman Lonit, who had very realistic attraction for the fatally charming Navahk. All characters are true to life, with very human flaws and conflicting emotions. More than anything else, this book has shown with striking clarity what a tenuous grip all human beings had on their very existence in the age of ice. Before I had even finished with "Corridor of Storms", I made another trip to the used book store and stocked up on the next six volumes, eagerly anticipating the rest of the saga.

Gilbert Morris is great!
'A Covenant of Love' is a great book! The characters are extremely realistic, and the plot is wonderful! I loved it!

'A Covenant of Love', greatly written Gilbert Morris!!
"A Covenant of Love was written by very popular Christian writer, Gilbert Morris, writer of the "House of Winslow" series. First of the Appomattox Saga, a series about the Civil War in Virginia, this book is very realistic. It is a novel with much history, romance, and adventure in it. Part One of the book is written in the summer of 1840, part two in 1849, and part three and four in 1859 and 1860.

Clay Rocklin, a headstrong and passionate man, is the main character of the story. He is rough and very competitive with his cousin, Gideon Rocklin, and loves to win. Having a restless spirit, he drinks and goes out all the time, which shames his family greatly. Later on though, he finds the Lord and starts a new life following Christ. Gideon Rocklin is Clay's cousin, who is almost an exact opposite of him. He is steadfast, responsible, and at the top of his class at West Point, a famous military school. He falls in love with Melanie Benton and they get married, much to Clay's dislike, since he loves Melanie, too. Melora Yancy is the young girl who leads Clay to Jesus. She is pretty, bright, and loves to read.

The story begins in the summer of 1840 in Virginia, when nineteen-year-old Gideon Rocklin, from the North Rocklin's, comes for a visit. The Rocklins were separated into the Southern and Northern Rocklins, when one of the Rocklins married a Northern woman. Nineteen-year-old Clay of the Southern Rocklins, is in love with Melanie Benton, as is Gideon. Melanie at first cannot decide between them and so flirts with both of them, trying to keep both of their attentions. But when Melanie finds out that she is in love with Gideon, she agrees to marry him. Clay, in frustration and anger, starts drinking, gambling, and shames the family. Will Clay ever have peace in his heart? And with the coming Civil War, will he be able to know where his loyalties lie?

Terrific book, as I said very realistic. I read this book in one night for I was in agony with Clay and was wondering throughout the whole book whether he would ever have peace. My favorite character is probably the calm and pretty Melora Yancy. I do hope she comes out more in all of the rest of the books in the Appomattox Series. I have also read the second book, "Gate of His Enemies". Unfortunately I still haven't read any of the other books though I hope to get them soon!

Well Done Gilbert Morris!
Wow! This was a beautiful story. I was impressed by the historical accuracy and the captivating story line. It was unlike any other romance novel I have seen. You will feel as though you really know this family, the characters are well rounded. I read this book straight though. I cried and rejoiced with the Rocklins. This book will teach you a little about Civil War history, a little about the south, a little about love and a little about the grace of God. I strongly recommend this book as well as the rest of this series.

The Crusades
Zoe Oldenbourg enthralls her readers with The Crusades. She never disappoints us. My only criticism is that she admits her confusion about the reason for the Crusades. The hostility and barbaric practices, which the invading Crusaders opposed and hoped to replace with Christian ways, are omitted. She is confused and uninformed about the reasons for these great wars. This undermines her scholarly credibility. I emphasize her gender and ethnic/cultural origins-- Russian/French female and common background-- as her limitations.

the crusaders
Very well written, provides an excellent insight into medieval man, his contributions to society and history. A goo dinsight into what was really behind the Crusades (politics, wealth, etc) vice the normal (old fashioned) intrepetation that the crusades were to primarily to free the holy land from the infidel.

A Wonderful Overview
Upon finishing the first half of this book, I soon found myself in a university library eagerly devouring smaller works on specific periods and figures that Oldenbourg introduced to me. I am a student of European history trying to narrow my interests before I apply to graduate school, and this book may prove very instrumental in guiding me toward the medieval period. It offers everything an inquisitive but largely uninformed reader could ask for-an even pace that piques the interest enough at every turn to inspire further inspection, lean but sufficiently detailed character sketches, a compelling narrative that provides minimal historiographical analysis, but enough to provoke the reader to draw his/her own conclusions... It also provides maps and illustrations, which are always a pleasant respite after mulling through hundreds of pages of prose.

One small complaint-the index and bibliography are light. This might be a non-factor, though, if you just want a thorough, solid account of an inherently interesting period of history to fulfill your personal interest. It's a good size at 700 or so pages, but I haven't come across a better overview of the first three crusades and believe me, I've been looking.

A good help book for work and life.
Yes this book left me with the feeling I had heard words of wisdom from an experienced father and businessman. The book is unique in that it offers methods for dealing with both Work and life. The author is gifted in his use of examples and is very organized in his construction. I only removed one star because there is little research beyond his life's experiences. I expect facts or more statistical examples, when I read a book.

Still all in all this is a book filled with wise words. If heeded, I sure it will improve your life as it has mine.

Wonderful and Practical
I got Daddy @ Work as a gift and loved it! I read the book in two evenings and in my hectic life that says something. His writing style is down to earth and practical to the point of telling you how to sit at a table to 'connect' over a dinner/lunch conversation. I will reread it again and again to let it soak in to my thick skull. I bought two other books from Robert Wolgemuth within a week of finishing Daddy @ Work (Just Daddy and Me & Pray with Me Daddy - both great as well). Daddy @ Work is a must read for any man who wants to make a difference in his world at work and at home! A+ Robert, I wish you lived in my town!

The buisness of FatherHood
Daddy @ Work Is a detailed synopsis of life in my world. The sucess, the failure, and the trying. In the work force I have an incredible predilection to exceed expectations at any expense. This leaves little room for much else. My family life began to suffer. I saw this and wanted to make things different. I started to study the scripture to find a Biblical portrait of a "reaL" Father. I also searched for a book. Finding Daddy @ Work was an answered prayer. There is indelible insight pouring from each page. "Real" life answers, To "real" life questions. Simple to follow outlines, that will lead in a new direction. To honor God, your family, and your buisness sounds impossible, but it's not. There can be success. I challenge you to read this book, dive into scripture and you too can find the medium. This is the key to a happy and fulfilled life. Daddy @ Work will help you find it!

Walter Anderson is the editor of Parade, the magazine insert that appears in many U.S. Sunday newspapers; Parade's optimistic, all-American style is echoed in The Confidence Course. In addition to becoming more confident, Anderson wants to teach you how to win friends, influence people, and become an overall better person. His advice is deceptively simple: take responsibility for your behavior, do things rather than "try" to do them, act in spite of your fear, and practice tolerance of others. Anderson's confidence is catching; when he discusses how to speak in public both courageously and entertainingly, you might just forget your fears and go out and rent a lecture hall.
Average review score:

Prepare to make an F
Walter Anderson is just like the much-talked-about, dreaded college professors whose classes have no real structure or surefire path to success.

I'm not looking for a teacher to "hold my hand" through the course -- I'm plenty capable of learning many of the lessons myself -- but Anderson's chapters dump a myriad of anecdotes and stories onto you and expect you to somehow pull a lesson from them. The challenges at the end of the chapters are often misguided, and I've yet to have one of the revelations he says his readers will experience after performing them.

If Anderson offered a course at my school, I'd avoid it like the plague, which is a shame, as the premise of this book is *very* appealing.

The best motivational book I have ever read!
I first bought a copy of the audiocassette version of Walter Anderson's seminar in 1999. It just happened to catch my eye in a bookstore, and the premise seemed simple. Intrigued, I planned to take it home and listen to it. Instead, I played it on the way home. Maybe I shouldn't have, because I was paying too much attention to the tape and not on driving. His voice was so moving and powerful that it made me take notice. His simple style caught me off-guard, and was the best motivator I ever could have had. Walter became a presence in my life, and I feel that my life turned around because of him. I also feel I'm a better writer because of him.

I made at least two copies of the tape, and after they all warped, I bought a new original set. After it became available, I decided I wanted to get the book. After checking out a copy of my local library so many times I couldn't check it out any more, I bought a copy. I've only had it for a couple of months, but it is already dog-eared and written in. It feels like I've owned it for years.

I could keep this a balanced review and say something negative, but there isn't any point. There is nothing negative I could ever say about about this book. Every word is weighted with his earnestness and motivates the reader to search within himself to find out what he desires most. As he did with me, Walter will excitedly tell you to dream big, and will gently tell you that everyone struggles, and will motivate you to take the risk of doing what it takes to live your dream. His advice was the best I've ever received. Today I am doing what I have always wanted.
And it feels great.

confidence course
well I think that this book was pretty cool. Iam only 15 and I read it and it has helped me alot personally inside. I still have trouble not being ever so shy around people but I just tell myself Iam just as good as them if better. Also I have found myself to be noticing how to deal and take responibilites for my own actions and apoligize etc when I know its right. I recommend this book to anyone that needs confidence or self esteem.
