I have enjoyed all books by Candace Camp, Kristan James and Lisa Gregory. Her Lisa Gregory books, Rainbow Season and Rainbow Promise, are classics. However, this book, although a different local and time period is equally as good. For those who enjoy this book, look up some of her other books. You'll find yourself a Camp fan.

This book is fantastic reading. This is the last book of a 3-book series written by Candace Camp. The first one is "A stolen heart" and the second book is "Promise me tomorrow". The characters of her books are vividly written and seemingly alive. The story of the series is about three brother and sisters who were separated since they were young. Will they find each other? Read the whole series and find out for yourself.

No Other Love is an absolutely wonderful book. Nicola and "The Gentleman" ignite sparks from their first encounter and fan the flame throughout the rest of the book.

Nicola, who is a down-down-to-earth member of high society, is still in love with her former lover who has been dead for ten years. One can almost feel her pain and longing for him.

Jack, "The Gentleman" highwayman, is a character I think every woman would love to meet. He is vowing revenge against Exmoor for a past wrong. Jack is definitely a hero to fall in love with. A sort of Robin Hood to the villagers.

Even though the direction this book is going in seems pretty obvious, the fun part is getting to the destination (the last page!) This book had me smiling and practically on the edge of my seat. Of course characters from the other two books in the series are in this one and that adds to the fun. This was definitely my favorite of the three books. It was completely enjoyable. (It is comparable to the Mallory Novels by Johanna Lindsey.) You will love the characters just as much. I can't say enough about this book except that it is a MUST READ!!!

I have to admit in over twenty-nine years of ministry, I have not read a Nicky Cruz book until now. Sure, back in the early 70s I saw the Cross and the Switch Blade, but not being a Christian at the time I was not too impressed. So when my youth minister laid this book on my desk, it sat there for almost two weeks until an overwhelming sense of guilt and obligation make me pick it up and begin to read.

This is a wonderful book. As I read it, I could sense the integrity of Nicky Cruz. How refreshingly honest it is to read when Nicky tells us that he has not written a book in the past eight years because he had nothing to say. As an avid reader of Christian books, it become readily apparent that too many authors repackage sermons and stoop to write drivel just to publish another book to receive royalty checks. As soon as I read this confession, I was hooked. On the integrity issue, we see how Nicky had to come to grips with the cult of celebrity and his sense of being used to attract crowds so Christian entertainers could earn more money. I was shocked to see how his publisher failed to pay him any significant royalties on his book Run Baby Run, an international bestseller. I was awed by the grace with which Nicky accepted his plight and gave God the glory for it.

Enough about the author lets look at the book. Cruz calls the church to stop doing church and to be the church- to abandon its fear of men and to follow without hesitation the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is, as the poet said, a road less traveled. Interlaced with personal stories, Cruz argues persuasively for a life of faith and trust in the sovereign moves of the Holy Spirit- that as Christians we could turn the world upside down if we would just get out of the way and let God be God.

For us control freaks this is a word we need to hear. The Holy Spirits fire is something we cannot calculate or control. It the truth be told, too many us prefer predictability and security to the guidance of Gods Spirit. The results are predictable- stagnating or declining churches where the power of God is absent. We cannot have both- We must surrender the leading and power of the Holy Spirit and see lives transformed, or we can try to control the sovereign God and get only the results that we, ourselves, are capable of getting. I choose to follow God.

I strongly recommend this book to every Christian who is looking to serve God in any capacity. One Holy Fire is a solid reminder of what God is willing and able to do whenever He finds a believer that will yield completely to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
In this book, Nicky Cruz narrates amazing accounts of God's power, deliverance and love towards the hurting and helpless. He also shares inspiring testimonies of how God has mentored, supported and refreshed him throughout his ministry. One Holy Fire is a refreshing, uplifting and anointed book. I believe it will greatly bless every person - clergy or laity - who reads it with an open heart.

Francis' third book, written back in the mid-Sixties, though still a great read (curious reference to The Beatles is the only jarring reminder of its time), and a wonderful example of how quickly Francis picked up his new craft. If he was as fluent, smooth, and skillful jockey as he is writer he must, indeed, have been great. This book first introduces Sid Halley, one of Francis' two recurring heroes, the jockey-turned-detective with a damaged left hand. Halley has been drifting through life since his career-ending injury; a further injury (caused by a bullet) and the not so subtle intervention of his father-in-law bring a change to his attitude, a radically different outlook, and a desire to work effectively and properly at his new job. He is badly frightened, and physically damaged ~ two things Francis excells at writing, his fear, especially, is thoroughly convincing ~ but succeeds in both defeating the baddies and renewing his life.

I give ***** to the verson read by Ian McShane (avoid the other readers). I enjoyed McShane's read voice. Some actor/readers, try to act took much when they read - I mean males doing higher voices for females are such a pain. McShane give the right tone, a narrator and is it an enjoyed voice that carries you vividly into the world of ex-jockey Sid Halley. Injured in a riding accident, he now is a Enquiry agent/security expert that is looking into the strange accidents happening and Seabury Race Course.

Dick Francis' writing, quite naturally, is excellent, though it is McShane excellent narration that has me listening to this tape again and again. I have given it several times and gifts and recommended it to friends. All have thanked me for the enjoy listen.

What are your odds not to read the book Odds Against? And what are your odds to stop reading the thrilling pages when you are half way of the book? Finally, what are your odds to finish to book without putting it down? The answer is obvious, none. From a jockey to a private detective along with twisting events with twisting ending, there is no way of telling what will happen next. For those fans that enjoy mystery books, this is one of the books that you can't pass on. In this book, you will find how clever that Sid Halley (a former jockey champion) to end Kraye's (a businessman) plan of taking over Seabury Racecourse. Just make sure that you tell me one thing: What are the odds of Halley spoiling the plot of Kraye and his henchamen?

A romantic suspense novel combining oceanography and an FBI agent... Who would've thought of it?

Riley knows that her grandfather, a famous oceanographer, did not cause the fatal accident that destroyed his vessel. However, when a corpse turns up near his home, he is suspected of worse -- he is suspected of murder.

Somehow, Riley persuades the reclusive John Straker to help her clear her grandfather. Or maybe he's simply coming along to keep her out of trouble...

This book shows what can happen when you combine a mystery with strong secondary characters. You get a much better mystery that way.

The hero and heroine started out on the wrong foot, and it took them a while to catch up. Though there was lots of sexual tension, I missed the witty banter I was expecting from a Carla Neggers book.

This review is based on the audio tapes: This was my first book by Ms.Neggers, and although I don't usually read romantic suspense, I did enjoy On Fire. The hero and heroine (Riley St. Joe and John Straker) are two of the most obstinate, hard-headed people I'd ever met (and not in a bad way). Both are intent on solving the crimes and protecting loved ones, and in the process these childhood friends and adversaries find themselves falling in love with each other.

I enjoyed most the setting of Boston north to the coast of Maine. Carla Neggers has it down pat. The oceanographic setting for the story was one I'd not read before and I found it very interesting.

The tape's reader was excellent in that she was able to assume so many different voices, which I think is essential in a multi-character story. If there was one drawback it was that she dropped her voice too much at the end of many sentences, making it difficult to understand unless the volume was cranked up high. That aside, I would definitely try another of Ms. Neggers books on tape.

Loved the tapes. The story combined romance and mystery.

Excellent writing from a motivated and dedicated young man. Jerrold Ladd experienced disrupted education, a lack of early age positive male influence while proving first hand, that you can over come all obstacles and succeed in America.

It is a gut wrenching look into living in America's projects shortly after desegregation. It reminded me of the fact that life in America is not and has never been the same for everyone. For many, it is a living torture. Once you have read Out Of The Madness, you feel like you personally know the author. The author, Jerrold Ladd, tells an in-depth story about his life, his family (Mother, sister and brother) and some of his friends and associates. He provides an incredible amount of detail for a relatively short book (under 200 pages and large print). He allowed me to walk in his foot steps, feeling his disappointments, success's and failures. Each chapter presented intense quality of life and life treating situations that would test and potentially break the fiber of any man or woman. Jerrold exposes himself, his friends and associates in a bold and remarkable manner that allows you to actually feel his emotions. This book is a dead serious look at life within a segment of America, yesterday and today. The book reminds you that to many people (children and adults), needlessly, experience this and worst everyday. I recommend the book as a must read for everyone. My reason: This book provides an insight into a situation that many generations of Americans helped create. It gives motivation to those in similar situations and those that have not lived integrated into murder, drugs and abuse. Most of all, it proves, in America you can change your life.

As a 24 yearold 1st yr. teacher in West Dallas I have been looking for answers. I work at the Middle School across from the projects referred to in this book. I am not too far from "Fishtrap", and the gangs (boyz) have changed from Ladd's time but only by the faces of their members. Some of the most infamous being my most delightful students. My kids are not like all of the others in America. They are different...special even and Jerrold Ladd told me why. As I read this book with every page I turned I anticipated that the "story" would get better. I prayed that his mother would change. I longed for the chapter when some long lost Great-Uncle from Georgia would come and take him from the reality of his torrid life. But it never happened. And I became frustarted because my students do not have anyone to rescue them from their realities, not for the long haul at least. Jerrold Ladd's book explained to me the generational frustaration that West Dallas incorporates. The resentment and struggle of blocks and blocks of people is the only thing this community truly owns. Ladd wrote the testament and explanation of a community's fear. His hopes and fears were evident on every page of this book. I only wish that my studenrs could take time from their troubles of hunger, fear, anger, and poverty to big up this reflection of possible positive self. Thank you for this invaluable tool of living and learning.

As a 24 yearold 1st year Teacher in West Dallas I have looked for reasons as to why my students (my kids) as I call them are the way they are. I teach eighth grade History at Thomas Edison Middle Learning Center which is located across the street from the projects referred to by Mr. Ladd. I can testify that all of my 109 students are the soul of Jerrold Ladd.

I have gone home frustrated many nights, crying myself to sleep distraught over what my kids must face at home from day to day after a long day at school. Mr. Ladd brought home the realities of my student lives. He pushed their questionable futures to the forefront of my classroom and by this Christmas I was sad to see them go. I was sad because I questioned how many of them would bathe without the motivation of not being ridiculed by mean classmates. I was sad because I wondered to what length one of my kids would go to pay his mother's rent, the same mother who stood in front of me and her precious son parent-confrence night and stated how he was a waste of 13 years.

As I turned the pages of this book I waited with each page for Mr. Ladd's situation to get better. Similarly, as I come to work everyday I look for my kids situation to get better. In the final ten to twelve pages of this testament to the community of West Dallas I finally saw inspiration and hope, however I shudder to think how long it will take the children of West Dallas to see the same thing.

Jerrold Ladd thank you for this guide into the minds of my babies. It is a invaluable tool.

"Shadow Scourge" may be one of the strangest stories in the series so far and maybe that's why I liked it so much. With its references to a couple of old Deathlands adventures and echoes of Lovecraft, its fast-moving, VERY action-packed and filled with deviltry and derring-do. Our heroes face a villain of the likes they never encountered before and probably pray they never do again. The way the swamp muties were featured made them some of the most repellant creatures ever to appear in either Outlanders and Deathlands--and so of course I hope they show up again. So far the track record of this series is 100 percent. There are some novels I liked better than others but I haven't come across a bad one yet.

I don't usually read horror stories because they never scare me. I didn't expect to find a horror story in an Outlanders novel...and I didn't expect to have it "creep" me out. Shadow Scourge has a lot of action in it, a lot of violence but the supernatural overtones made it a winner for me. Outlanders is usually high adventure and action with sci-fi overtones, so this book came as a nice surprise.

Shadow Scourge may be looked as another sci-fi doomsday book when examined. But what Outlanders is is totally the opposite. The author uses history and future all in one: The book takes place in the future yet they encounter things thousands of years old.

I cannot describe the total uniqueness in these novels. While most future books are man books straight sci-fi, this isnt. If you look at a catagory this book is in in the store its catagory is Western/Men's Adventure. Yet this book had fantasy, humor, facts, sociology, history, romance, friendship, drama and BRILLIANT storyline. Everything is in these books that anyone could want to read about. Therefore it isn't western or men's adventure.

In this particular book, the group journey to South America where they encounter the descendents of the Mayan Empire that headed south after their descendants were murdered by Hernan Cortes. Their culture is still the same after 700 years. These characters which take place 200 years into the future expierience things not seen in 500 years. Anyone into history would enjoy this book.

Also, In other comments you hear about vampires and this and that. Im not a fan for vampires but they play a small part in it. Anyone that likes horror would like this.

Anyone into romance, friendships, tension, aliens. you name it, its in this book as well as all the Outlanders Series.

The author is very intelligent and thats no lie.

'Over My Dead Body' finds a young lady who arrives at Wolfe's door claiming to be Wolfe's daughter. Wow! What a way to start the book! Things begin to heat up even more when the young lady is suspected of a murder in a fencing studio.

This is the seventh entry in the Wolfe series, and it is an entertaining one. Wolfe is in his usual beer-drinking, orchid-loving form, using that brilliant mind of his to sort out any difficulty. In this book, we begin to see a little more depth in two of the recurring minor characters in Wolfe's employ: First, Fred Durkin, the lumbering, bumbling guy who is not too bright, but is always there when Wolfe needs him. Second, Saul Panzer, who is probably just as good a detective as Archie (well, almost), but is completely no-nonsense. (And Archie thinks he's better looking than Saul.)

I'd give the book 4.5 stars if I could. The only problem is Wolfe says a few words and lines that really aren't in character for him. This would only distract readers who have read a lot of the books. Since this book is still fairly early in the series, Stout can be forgiven. 'Over My Dead Body' is definitely a Wolfe book not to be missed.

Having read just about all of the Nero Wolfe series, I have to say, this one contains all of the elements that make Rex Stout's detective novels wildly entertaining, without most of the elements that make some of them maddening

In this mystery, the utterly unswashbuckling Wolfe is revealed, in his younger, svelter days, to have been quite a romantic. Not only did he fight on the anti-Imperial side in Montenegro during the Great War, but he adopted and may even have actually sired a young girl.

To his shock, this young Yugoslav maiden--whom he had lost track of--reappears in his life, up to her neck in a particularly messy, intricate affair that may or may not include missing diamonds, a dead body or two, international intrigue, and a bellboy's uniform. For all of the peeks into Wolfe's previously unsuspected soul, he remains as crumudgeonly and as immovable as ever. Archie Goodwin, of course, remains the wisecracking, milk-drinking sidekick, flirting with anything in a skirt and even giving a Nazi agent a black eye just for the fun of it.

The joy of these books is their marriage of the American gumshoe attitude and the British cozy focus on character. Where they generally fall short is their plotting. This entry in the series is, without a doubt, the most successfully rounded out of the lot. Stout manages to keep the mystery truly mysterious, and yet never manages to confuse the reader so thoroughly that s/he can't find the exit. The plot actually ends on the last page--many of the Nero Wolfe mysteries fizzle out, wrapping up a chapter or two before the end, leaving nothing but rumination and grumbling for the final pages. Others seem never quite to wrap up all the loose ends. Here, the conclusion is both inevitable and unexpected--utterly satisfying.

Imagine having Nero Wolfe as your dear old dad. That's one of the delicious premises of this book. The mystery is a very good one. But even more entertaining is the glimpses into Wolfe's early life, when he was "lean," and his long-ago adventures in Europe. Archie is terrific, as always. The police go from adversaries to allies, and there's plenty of action to keep us on our toes.

"Patience of a Saint" is a typical Greeley story. It contains some excellent images and metaphors of the Catholic Church, some good mystery, some sex, and some violence. It fits Greeley's perfect equation of what to include in a sell-able story. But even with all the expected story parts, it remains one of his better stories, delving into a person's growth as an adult. It is reminiscent of the Biblical story of Saint Paul's conversion, set in modern-day Chicago, with some contemporary images thrown together to show us what Paul may have gone through if he had lived in our time. An interesting idea, a good read, and if you take the time, a thought-provoking way to approach the Bible story as well as middle age.

This is the story of Red Kane, a man caught in a dilemma of Love. After twenty years of marriage plagued by misunderstanding and bitter resignation, Red finds himself falling in love with his wife all over again - and at the same time, pursued by an implacable, attractive God.

Redmond P. Kane, a popular Chicago newspaper columnist and Pulitzer prize winner, smokes and drinks too much, neglects his kids, enjoys a mistress, is feared and hated by his colleagues, and has shared nothing but a bed with his wife for much too long. At 53, Red is an unhappy, disgruntled cynic. But soon, all that changes. On a Chicago street corner a speeding car, almost runs him down, and a moment of divine grace - one in which God and Red's green eyed wife are somehow identified with each other - almost knocks him unconscious. An then Red';s real troubles begin. They start with evil- plan old fashioned wickedness in the person of aging politico Harv Gunther. But what happens when he does? Beautiful Irish Eileen think's he's having a breakdown, just as his newsroom co-workers are sure he's finally gone over the edge. Soon, a psychiatrist is trying to have him committed. God has turned Red's whole existence upside down. Must he choose between his wife and his god? Or have they joined in a plot to try the patience of a saint. As Red probes the depths of his new emotions and renewed commitments with the help of Msgr Blackie Ryan, he also digs into the dirty business of Harve Gunther and in the process gravely endangers the lives of everyone he loves.

This is a wonderful book. The author suggests wonderful possibilities of grace and love for our lives. It is a book that restores faith and replenishes the soul. Oh, and it's a great love story. Not your typical boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back; this is a wonderful tale about a man who discovers the true depth and meaning of his love for his wife--with no small assistance from God. In a "cynical" age this book is a rare, complex, affirmation of true love and grace. This is my favorite Greeley story.

I just finished reading "A Peaceful Retirement". Just like her other books, it was excellent reading. I was sorry when the book ended because I wanted to read more. Few years ago I wrote Miss Read a letter stating I loved all her books. She was kind enough to write me a handwritten letter in reply. After a hetic day, I look forward to reading her books and revisit the loveable characters in the quiet town.

Miss Read's novels capture the best aspects of the small town provincial novel--the sense of connection, the wry Austenisms--while leaving the sentimentality and pollyanna-ism sometimes afflicting the genre to her lesser imitators. A Peaceful Retirement brings us another step--perhaps a final step--nearer to the end of this series. I recommend this series, and this book within the series, to anyone who wishes that a novel might have both a 20th C. awareness and a somewhat 19th C. sense of perspective....Most people have not discovered Miss Read, and one somehow wonders if "most people" really ought to. But I am certainly glad that I did....

I enjoyed this book just as much as I have all the other books written by Miss Read. The reason that I enjoyed this book so much was that it was like catching up with old friends and being transported back to the Village and all the surrounding scenery which captures my imagination. I recommend that you read not only this book but all those that Miss Read (Dora Saint) has written for anyone that enjoys people and a very descriptive story which includes the lovely countryside that one can only imagine. I will miss my friends very much. Thank You Dora Saint for giving me many hours of pleasure.

"Pellucidar" is the second volume in the Pellucidar series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and find our hero David Innes and his scientist friend Abner Perry returning to the inner world. At the end of "At the Earth's Core" the duo had returned to the surface only to discover that Hooja the Sly One has substituted a Mahar, one of the rhamphorhynchus-like sentient reptiles that tyrannized Pellucidar, for Dian the Beautiful, the woman Innes loves. So the plan is to get back down there, rescue Dian, and if time allows end the exploitation of the primitive humans by the evil Mahars. The good news is that Innes returns to the inner world, but the bad news is that he ends up in a different part of Pellucidar where he has no friends and new enemies. This 1923 novel is stanrd ERB adventure, where the hero is separated by circumstances and bad guys from the woman he lives (in fact, it is very reminiscent of "The Gods of Mars," the second John Carter novel). But this is still before ERB was in his potboiler stage where the main game was turning out as many Tarzan novels as possible. What makes Pellucidar a bit different from the rest of the Burroughs fantasy adventures is the unique geography of the inner world and the prominence of smart guy scientist Abner as a supporting character (i.e., the brains of the outfit). If at all possible you want to pick up a copy of "Pellucidar" that has the original illustrations by Illustrated by J. Allen St. John, who remains by favorite ERB artist. The Pellucidar series consists of six stories, including a Tarzan crossover, and continues in "Tanar of Pellucidar," but these first two novels stand alone as

In this, his second novel set in the savage world of Pellucidar, Edgar Rice Burroughs returns his hero David Innes to the earth's core. In relatively formulaic ERB style, David's stone-age empress Dian the Beautiful has been stolen from him by Hooja the Sly One, and he sets off against daunting odds across a primitive world to rescue her. He is aided by advanced technology (such as firearms) brought with him from the surface, and the innovations of his dear friend, the scientist Abner Perry.

This is relatively light weight science fiction, but as always Burroughs fast moving plot and adventurous style keep the pages turning like lightning. My father once reccomended this to me when I was in grade school and I simply fell in love with ERB, and I have recently been able to share the pleasure by passing on my small collection of Burroughs novels to my younger brother (now aged 12). . . after rereading them of course. He's become hooked as well, and now will not stop pestering me to find him a copy of book 3.

Pellucidar continues the tale of David, the lovable protagonist from At The Earth's Core. It tells the story of his return trip to the fabled subterrainian stone-age land known as Pellucidar. Here he must locate old friends, reunite with his lost loved one, and face his all-but-forgotton foes.

Burroughs' writing is simply fabulous, and even makes the characters seem all the more realistic, though many of them are not even human, but sentient creatures who can exist only in the minds of great writers like Burroughs, and in the land known as Pellucidar.
