More than a "fish" story!
I'm a Georgian, familiar with the name/reputation of Terry Kay, but a first time reader of his work. I'm also a writer myself, so I found myself enthralled by the author's ability to make me see every tiny part of the story with words that were mesmerizing in their beauty and originality. I don't fish, but I now wish I did. I've visited Lake Chatuge and environs many times and now I will "see" below its watery areas a whole new world.

Lyrical beauty
The author of my favorite novel, To Dance With The White Dog, does not disappoint us with this lyrical novel. He paints the emotions and the scenes until we feel it in our hearts. A must read!

The Valley of Light
I have read every novel Mr. Kay has published to date. "The Valley of Light" is hands down my favorite. I reside in the Clay County of the book and Mr. Kay has captured our beautiful mountains and lakes with stunning clarity. The characters ring true to the adults of my childhood. People of this region do truly care about each other and lend a hand or a home cooked meal when its needed. They feel each others tragedies and triumphs. I regret that time and progress has changed the intimacy protrayed in this wonderful novel. His prose is magnificent and a pleasure to read. I couldn't put it down but also dreaded its coming to an end. I have praised it to all friends and family and recommended it heartily. However, they will have to find their own copy, nobody is borrowing mine. I shan't take a chance of losing it.

Inspiring, Uplifting, and Heavenly!!
Where Miracles Happen is a wonderful book, which will warm your heart, bring tears to your eyes and leave you with such a warm feeling all over! Ms. Anderson has managed once again, to capture the essence of the miraculous in everyday life. With over 50 different accounts of true encounters with heavenly beings, one knows that God loves us, we are watched over, protected, and guided constantly throughout our lives. Sometimes, as shown by several of the stories, our deceased loved ones are with us and also watching over us.

Help is always available, one just has to ask for it, as the story illustrated of the mother who did not have enough money to feed her children and food miraculously appeared, or the child caught in the snowstorm and could not find her way home, yet was guided by a supposed neighbor, who was later found out to be sick that entire week, or the gentleman who was protected driving when his mother invoked safety prayers from him and avoided a collision where a dozen cars lost control, yet no one was injured.

There are also stories of healings and of our loved ones sending signs and messages to reassure us that they are indeed in a place of love and that they are indeed all right. It seems that their messages and signs bring such healing and release to those that they have left behind.

These stories will inspire you and lift you up if you are feeling blue. Sometimes we need gentle reminders from above, that we are loved and cherished and not forgotten, even though we ourselves may think so.

I love keeping Ms. Anderson's books near by and randomly opening them and reading passages after a long and particularly stressful day! I would also encourage anyone to check out Ms. Anderson's website, where one can subscribe to a true angel story of the week!

This book would be great comfort to anyone who has lost a loved one, as well as to those who are experiencing turmoil in their lives. The title of the book does indeed live up to its name and the miracles presented in this book are phenomenal!

Highly recommended!!

A Wonderful Book!
This is a truly wonderful book. It will leave you with love in your heart and tears in your eyes. A book everyone should read.

A Long and Happy Life
Stricken with spinal cancer in 1984 at 51, novelist Reynolds Price lived to tell the tale, and what a tale it is. With not an ounce of self-pity, Price recounts his diagnosis, treatment, continuous battle with pain and his "whole new life" as someone who now uses a wheelchair with brutal honesty and humor. If you have ever doubted for an instant that we as individuals are ultimately left to put our lives back together after a traumatic illness, Price's story should put that myth to rest. He alone with the help of hypnosis learned how to deal with constant pain, a subject that many of his doctors ignored.

Mr. Price gives every indication that he has a new and happy life. He certainly has gotten on with it and continues to turn out books almost as rapidly as Joyce Carol Oates. It is fortunate that someone with the literary stature of Price chose to write down his experience. This book, along with Abraham Vergese's book about his experience as a doctor treating AIDS patients in East Tennessee in the early years of the epidemic-- MY OWN COUNTRY-- should be required reading for all med students. If reading these two books has no effect on them, they should get out of medicine and into computers.

A WHOLE NEW LIFE is truly an amazing book and as good as anything Price has ever written. It may be his best effort. I cannot recommend it too highly.

One test of a good book is...
One test of a good book is this: does it change the way you live your life or how you look at people. Reynolds Price, professor of English at Duke University, explores in this work a theme that hits everyone but that we don't often consider, or wish to consider, that is, the effect of major trauma on one's life and the life of one's friends, and perhaps everyone else around you.

RP tells the story of his own experience with spinal cancer in a bold, unflinching, but intensely personal way. One of the themes of the work is how profoundly a patient is affected by the attitudes and communication habits of medical care professionals. While he has tremendous praise for those who showed loving concern for him in his difficult times, he also wonders why some were so callous. For instance, he was informed of his tumor by two doctors while lying on a gurney in a crowded hallway. "What would those tow splendidly trained men have lost if they'd waited to play their trump til I was back in the private room for which Blue Cross was paying our mutual employer, Duke [University], a sizable mint in my behalf?"

Also wonderful in this book are his lessons/recommendation for those who have undergone similar tragedies such as this: "Generous people - true practical saints, some of them boring as root canals - are waiting to give you everything on Earth but your main want, which is simply THE PERSON YOU USED TO BE."

For me at least, this book helped change how I look at people, and I hope, will give me strength to deal with the traumas that will undoubtedly come someday to me and those I love.

Honest, insightful, earthy
I took a long time to read this book so that I could think about all that Mr. Price said, there was so much--about being a person struck down with a "catastrophic" illness, what it is like to lose the ability to walk or do anything else with your legs, about having cancer and wondering when it is coming back, navigating a large medical complex, about being a different person because of it all, about embracing that different person rather than resisting him, about what is most important about caregivers, doctors, nurses and friends. (Mr. Price has awesome friends who basically would go to the ends of the earth for him). I learned so much and found Mr Price's writing to be so honest and earthy and insightful. i hated coming to the final chapter. but loved what it had to say. i would recommend this book to everyone, it is a wonderful look at one's own humanity and that of others. Please also read "Letter to a Man in the Fire." after you have read "A whole new life." I read them the other way around, but it is more meaningful to read "a whole new life" first. Every member of every medical discipline should read this book--nurses, doctors, physical therapists, and students of all disciplines. As an oncologist, I learned a lot about how patients feel and what they might need.

A Gripping True WWII POW Escape Story!!
A Gripping True WWII POW Escape Story!!

This book took me over until the very last page.

I usually don't care for reading as a past time and especially novels that take too long to get through.

I read this book over 20 years ago (and only did so by chance after finding it in the school library), because I had to submit a book report during my junior high school years.

I enjoyed the book so much I eagery and ultimately compiled a great book report and was awarded 9/10 as a grade.

Funny enough, I did so well with it that I took the liberty to re-submitted the same book report the following year and again was awarded another high mark (of course it was a different teacher and I had to re-write and date it).

In fact here I am over 20 years later I plan to get my very own copy. That's how much I enjoyed it!

"The Wooden Horse" by Eric Williams is a fabulous book and would make a perfect gift to that person who you think should read more...but doesn't.

They'll thank you for it!

One of the best prison breakout novels of all time
Don't be put off by the recent "out of print" status, this book is a great true story of a prison breakout in WW2. You can also easily pick it up through Amazons second hand bookstores for a relatively cheap price.

Written by the escapee himself, it retains all its charm and spirit since it first received rave reviews in the late 1940s to early 1950s.

The breakout came from a novel, yet brilliant idea inspired by the Legend of the Trojan Horse- ie to use a gym vaulting horse as cover to hide an inmate who dug a tunnel to the nearest concentration camp fence. It succeeded, but I won't ruin the story with all the details, you will have to read it yourself! Rest assured the book is well written, and as it is told by one of the escapees himself it has a certain charm, readability and authenticity about it.

Getting out was just the first part, the escapees still had to travel across most of Germany to reach home, right amidst the heartlessness and desparation of WW2. I found the description of the lives of everyday German people within a major war as soulful, revealing and harrowing as the concentration camp itself.

A remarkable story, a great and uplifting novel, sure to inspire for many years to come. No mundane "political correctness" here, truthfully told and recorded with all the desperation, fear, and courageous spirit of many involved in the war-on both sides.

There was a film also made in the 1960s I think, which was almost as good as the book, but not quite. Of similar genre to The Wooden Horse is "the Great Escape", also made into a film, but the Wooden Horse is more realisitic and better done overall in my opinion.

Uplifts the spirit.

Almost as good as THE GREAT ESCAPE...
If you read "The Great Escape" by Paul Brickhill, you are bound to enjoy this book. It is also set in a POW Camp, and Eric Williams and Michael(I can't remember the surname) devise a scheme to trick the Germans.

This book was both touching, brilliant, fun, exciting and absorbent. It really taught me a lot about what life was like during WWII. This book is among the Top War books, for Sure!

You Will Be Satisfied
Published in Audio Cassette by HarperAudio (January, 1996)
Authors: Bob Tasca and Peter Caldwell
Amazon base price: $12.00
"Customer service is not a destination, it's a continual journey," says automobile supersalesman Bob Tasca. In You WILL Be Satisfied, Tasca (with Peter Caldwell) shows the route he has taken from the opening of a Ford Motor dealership in tiny Rhode Island some 40 years ago to perennial designation as one of the world's top car dealers. He believes his unwavering focus on customer satisfaction, detailed here, can be applied successfully in any sales-related business.

A book that showed us what we should be doing
After the owner of our store read the book all employees read it . Then the owner flew to meet Mr Tasca at his store ,he spent 3 days there, wa sgiven the tour of his store, he spent quite a bit of time meeting with Mr Tasca and his sons talking about his philosophy and way of doing business .What a place !! upon returning we have instatuted The same 7 day return policy that Mr Tasca has as well as putting 3month 3000 mile waranties on our cars.it took some faith in our selves and our business to go all the way but we have and we have not regreted it one bit,, Great Book

How to sell with integrity and without lowering your price
This book, through anecdote and exposition, tells the reader flat-out how to sell, without violating integrity. It covers why the "lowest price" game is one you can not win. It tells what the customer really wants. While it discusses these topics in relation to selling cars, it explains how these ideas can be used in other industries.

When I first saw this book, I picked it up because the name was familiar, since I used to live in southeastern Massachusetts, and I wondered what Bob Tasca had to say. Now I know, and I feel that I got good value from the book. And that's his point, in part. But it's -his- book, so let -him- say it to you.

Would I buy a car from this man? You bet. (review from reading the hardcover edition)

The book for every dealership manager to read
Bob does a great job of showing his winning formula to build a successful dealership. Although any business person can learn from his book, it's a must read for dealership managers. I have recommended it to my dealership clients.

Funny, and yet so sad
I'm usually not one to read autobios, but since it is Spike Milligan I made the exception. It was funny, just as I expected it to be, but there were parts that were very moving and sad; as should be expected I suppose for a WWII novel. His accounts of the absurd are always dead on hilarious, and I found myself reading a passage over and over and just cracking up.
I knew that Spike suffered from depression, and I think in parts it was very apparent. The places that are especially poignant are when he relates a humorous tale, and then explain how he visited the place years later, and how the memories are too much for him to bear. In one particular paragraph he laments: "Oh, Yesterday, how you plague me!"
I love Spike Milligan and his comedy, and have read several run-of-the-mill internet bios on him but his own biography really brings him to life. A great read!

Excellent war memoirs
I've now read all of Spike Milligan's war memoirs and think they're excellent (I'm also not a big fan of the Goons). While generally very funny you can really sense his depressive moods even at times when he's not explicit about them.

A British friend gave me the paperback.
And I haven't stopped laughing. I had never heard of Spike Milligan before, but I found his book funny in a way that only the Brits can be, and touching with many moving parts about the war from a crazy man's perspective. I have since read five other Spike Milligan books, and none of them were a disappointment. Seeing WWII from Spike's point of view is realistic, funny, and very thought provoking. My British friend told me he (Spike) was crazy. At first I thought that was just a saying, but it's true. Spike is mentally defunct, in a very happy and bubbly kind of way. You will enjoy this book.

Affirmative Reaction

Average review score:

If the words "structural engineer" made your eyes glaze over
and you passed this series by, you would have been making a BIG mistake! I almost did, and I am so glad I didn't, since Tory and her involvements with the El Paso police dept. and a certain Detective Alvarez have been some really entertaining reading. The plots seem well described here on Amazon, so I won't add to it. Suffice to say that this is a well written series (you won't be cringing over the sentence structure with this author) with characters that are interesting and with depth. I will be watching for Aileen Schumacher and putting this series on my keeper shelf.

Excellant
Affirmative Reaction is the third detective David Alvarez and Tory Travers mystery.

This time, it's Tory Travers turn to ask Detective Alvarez for help because someone wants her dead and seems at any cost. Ms. Travers finds a woman's body in a storm drain of an abandoned subdivision. The body turns out to be a city employee who was known for speaking out against affirmative action programs. The Hispanic contractor, who built the now abandoned subdivision, was thought to have committed suicide, but could it have really been murder too? David and Tory must go back into the past in search of answers they need in the present.

These characters are growing on me. I love the under current of romance between these two. They continue to work together and try to hide their feelings for each other. Be prepared to enjoy every minute of this book. I found it to be an Excellent Read.

Pam Stone

Looking forward to the 4th in the series!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have her 2 others. Aileen's prose is very crisp, and enjoyable to read. The mix of the main character Tory's personal life (for instance, she is struggling with her 16 year old son noticing a girl for the first time) and the actual crime is well balanced. The characters have been developing over the series, and the relationship between Tory and David is fun to watch. The mystery unfolded nicely, certainly surprising me at the end.

I would recommend reading this series in order, because there is reference to the previous book (Framework for Death). But by all means, read it.

Great book!
I'll advise all the people who are in an unhealthy relationship to buy this book. This book will open your eyes and break that pattern of obsessive behavior.

Healing and Moving on...
This book helped me break the Infatuation Cycles I had developed. It is written in a very concise and non-invasive way so as not to offend and make you feel...well...like a deranged and sick person. My behavior was deranged and sick, but after reading this book I made a determined and solid decision to move on AND not look back. I have not repeated my Obsessive Cycle since.

Very helpful
When I first got this book, I was so addicted to a person that I did not realize I was stalking him and invading his privacy. This book deals out some harsh truth in the beginning. At first I felt no sympathy for my painful ordeal and I couldn't read it. I would recommend reading this book after you have explored why you are the way you are and accepted that are obsessed or addicted to a person. Before reading this book, you might want to try How to Break an Addiction to a Person. That book is a little more sympathetic to how you feel and it helps you to understand why you are acting the way you act. Once you come to terms with yourself and your problems, read Obsessive Love. It gives clear concise directions on how to stop obsessing using behavior conditioning. The psychological techniques in this book really work because they do not focus on appealing to your logical mind but to your illogical emotions and thoughts. This book also provides some insight on how you got this way and it helps you to understand how the person you are obsessing over feels. That is important. This is a great book that really helps deal with a sickness appropriately. It is not a quick fix it is not cheesy. It deals you the truth and then tells you exercises to do everyday to help you deal with the pain. It takes work and dedication to make yourself a healthier person but with this book, you can do it.

Walkfit audio tapes
I drag myself out of bed to walk and once I get started with one of Kathy Smith's tapes, I'm gone! She is motivating, exciting and absolutely wonderful. I couldn't make it on my treadmill (in the winter) without her tapes.

Great Walking Workout!
Once you start walking with these tapes, you'll find it hard to walk without them. You can choose among the 30, 40, and 60 minute workouts. Kathy Smith really gets you going and coaches you along. A great way to start, and keep, fitness walking.

Two Aunts, Theodore Roosevelt, and Poison.
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE is one of the classics of American theatre. It's a fast-paced play that has some great witty dialogue and unforgettable scenes. The play was made famous by the Frank Capra directed movie starring Cary Grant and has been a staple of community theatres across the USA since then.

Though there is a lead character here (Mortimer) the show is really carried by the supporting cast; e.g. it doesn't work without a Teddy who actually believes he's Theodore Roosevelt.

There are some plays that most people find boring to read. ARSENIC AND OLD LACE isn't one of them and I recommend it to anyone.

A wonderful play!
"Arsenic and Old Lace" is an underrated classical play. The witty lines and fasted paced scenes (yes, scenes in writing can be fast paced.) will keep your attention constantly. This play may run long, when seen on the stage, but is great nonetheless. I recommend.

Fantastic!!!
Read it, loved it, gotta do it! This would make a great production and be fun to perform! A must read!!
