One of the best parenting books I've read!I have to say that this book has given me more ideas than anything I've read so far in any book about strong willed kids. Basically I need to find what motivates my child and never, ever, give orders. It just doesn't work. The author places a lot of focus on incentive, rather than punishment. She doesn't advocate that kids should be able to run wild, or use being "strong-willed" as either a character defect OR an excuse for "bad" behavior.
There is some focus on being Christian, just an FYI. This may be good for some people, but not others.
In all, fantastic book!!
Positive PersuasionBut I need encouragement, guidance, and a full tool-belt in order to accomplish this parental task. One of the publications that has assisted me is You Can't Make Me (But I Can Be Persuaded) by author Cynthia Tobias Ulrich. This woman has a bachelor's degree in education, a master's degree in learning styles, and she is founder of Learning Styles Unlimited. She and her husband John, have twin boys, Michael & Robert. She is author of many inspiring books including "The Way They Learn." My first awareness of this fine author was during a speaking engagement she held in May of 1997. Since then I have read many of her books, and gleaned great benefit from her advice.
Cynthia Tobias provides insight on the mind of a strong-willed child (I prefer to call mine spirited, as per Mary Kucinka in Raising Your Spirited Child). She aids you in recognizing the choice patterns your children partake. You literally learn to share control without compromising authority. We are encouraged to decide what issues are negotiable, nonnegotiable, and to really choose our battles carefully. She provides practical advice for avoiding power struggles and enabling cooperation. Being strong-willed herself, having raised a strong-willed child, and having worked with many parents, enables Cynthia to give proven advice for working with this personality type.
Rooted from her own Christian walk, she encourages us parents to seek God's help in this process. God can assist us with the unconditional love that children need to feel. She points out the abundance of mercy and grace that God has for us, and that we can in turn provide to our children. Insights are provided on methods to teach a SWC self-motivation. Pointed out is the fact that we sometimes need to allow children to experience the consequences of "not doing something". We are reminded that we can enforce rules, but can't enforce compliance. It is stated that these children don't have a problem with authority; they challenge with how the authority is communicated to them. We are provided with a plan of action for helping our children to prepare for the best of their lives. We are instructed that from early childhood through encouraging our children to pursue their interests, they can recognize their strengths and preferences.
Additionally, examples of when something drastic needs to be done are provided. We are encouraged to hang on to hope and to continue providing our child with unconditional love.
So, you think you've blown it? Plenty of workable advice is provided! We as parents always are capable of telling our children what we do like about them. Further, we are able to example forgiveness to them.
In the epilogue we are reminded that most importantly we need to realize that:
"You Can't Make Me."
~Don't back me into a corner and leave me no choice.
~Don't demand that I obey without question.
~Don't tell me what I can or cannot do.
~Don't insist on something that can't be done
"But I Can Be persuaded!"
~Do value my ability to see the world from a unique perspective
~Do find ways to inspire me to change the world.
~Do ask me for my input.
~Do recognize my uniqueness even if it bothers you.
I highly recommend this book to parents of strong-willed children! I firmly believe that all educators and others who work with children will benefit from reading this book. When we recognize the positive in children and teach them how to work with their strengths, we are providing them with a healthy outlook.

Lieutenant Colonel John Reynolds is "one of a legion of staff officers sweating blood to keep an underfunded Army alive." The army is faced with even more savage budget cuts if a project called NGFB (Next Generation Fighter Bomber) gets the approval that its corporate sponsor, Macon-Bolt Industries, seeks. Two of Reynolds's old Army buddies--a general and a former officer turned lobbyist for Macon-Bolt--die suddenly and suspiciously. But it's not until his own live-in ladyfriend, singer Tish O'Malley, is killed by a car bomb that Reynolds begins to realize his own life has somehow become linked with the fate of NGFB.
There are some superb scenes of action and many worthy opponents, especially a totally believable military madman called Roscoe "Punchy" Hunt who destroys works of art for dramatic effect. But the real villain in Traitor is a giant military-industrial-political complex determined to suck up as much public money as it can. People like Reynolds and Peters can only nip at its heels. The author has also expressed his strong opinions in the acclaimed nonfiction book Fighting for the Future: Will America Triumph? --Dick Adler

this author an awesome discovery!
Excellent Book!
Extremely Gripping!

Hilarious, Dramatic, DifferentI've read quite a few Angela Carter books, and (while Wise Children is still written in that unmistakable Carter style) it seems far more light-hearted than, for example: Love or The Magic Toyshop, and has a completely different vocabulary, as Carter adopts the voice of Dora Chance -- deliciously witty, with a strong feminist tone, relatively simple vocab, and an entirely unrelenting appetite for drama.
I was a little dubious about reading Wise Children, as the blurb implied a knowledge of Shakepeare would be beneficial when it came to understanding the book, and that the multiple sets of twins and family secrets would become highly confusing. While any subtle Shakepeare references (aside from the obvious) went right over my head, it seems that they played a minor part in the book, as it's full of raucous wit, bubbling personality, theatrical dramatics, and an inexhaustable thirst for life. As for the numerous characters and their relation to each other: Carter manages to evoke such a vivid picture and to bestow each character with such simplistic, unique features, that you become invovled in the Hazard/Chance story (therby avoiding any confusion.)
While the ending to this book seemed a little too good to be true, it fitted in with the unrealistic aspect of the book, and the dramatic nature of nearly every major character.
A great read (as with almost every Angela Carter book) I highly recommend Wise Children.
Make no mistake, this is Carter's piece de resistance
genuine geniuswise children is typical of carter's style. she mixes the very high with the very low. an immensely intellectual writer, she nevertheless enjoys a good bawdy farce and a smattering of innuendo. this novel (for a plot summary see elsewhere) is a jaw-dropping display in the use and manipulation of language. there is sheer joy in every word. carter's confidence in her own wit was at a premium. it reads in one way as a feminist re-working of shakespeare; all the bard's devices are in view but it is all carried off with such vim and vigour and a deceptively throw-away attitude that it is a joy to read. this is a novel that demands to be read and re-read. all human life is here. get it on your bookshelf now!

One of my favorites
Bold, tension filled, and passionate.Johnny Whitehorse is a successful actor and model, as well as the owner of Whitehorse Farm, but his success seems to be bittersweet because those who meant the most to him are not there to share it. Johnny files a lawsuit and is representing thousands of Native Americans who feel their money is being mismanaged by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and if that isn't enough some of the shading dealings lead right back to Leah's father, Senator Foster.
Before the dust settles on this one, someone will be dead, some won't know whom to trust, and others will see the truth for what it is. The ending is very satisfying.
Deep & intriguing - fantastic contemporary romanceJohnny Whitehorse is a modern day Apache Native American who happens to also be very successful. He has a law degree, is known far and wide as a very famous model, and also is a popular actor. In addition, he owns several thriving businesses and is very active in politics as he fights for the rights of his people, the Mescalero Apache. Yes, it sounds like a bit much for someone to achieve by the mere age of thirty but that thought never occurred until now - as I write this review. I was so immersed in Johnny's character that I didn't think about his overwhelming success in nearly everything. However, Johnny has experienced at least one great failure that he cannot seem to forget and that was losing his first love, a senator's daughter by the name of Leah.
Leah Foster Starr is a practicing large animal veterinarian, the mother of a disabled child with cerebral palsy, divorced, and unfortunately, the daughter of a senator. She has never gotten along well with her father, particularly after he forced her to break off her relationship with Johnny Whitehorse, her first love, and seemingly, her only love. She has moved back to the town where she grew up and is barely making enough money to support herself, her son and his live in caretaker, and pay for all his medical bills and equipment. She grabs happiness wherever she may - particularly with her son, but life is hard and we find her expressing her anger and frustration at life more than a little in the opening pages of the book. She knows that Johnny is occasionally back in town and hopes fervently not to see him. She believes he hates her - he certainly has reason to do so. And she knows without doubt that she doesn't hate him in the least.
Johnny is back in town. He now owns the horse ranch Leah's father had once owned. Once he sees Leah again, after twelve years, it is not long before he realizes he can't leave her alone. They both fight, uselessly, their mutual attraction and find themselves caught up in some pretty serious complications. But this story, although primarily a romance, is also about so much more. We read about the plight of many Native Americans, the joys and sorrows of a child with cerebral palsy, and some of the intricacies of horse racing. Not all of this can be addressed in depth in one novel, but Sutcliffe is successful in bringing together many scenarios to produce a novel that is rich in experience of many subjects we don't often see written in romance novels. It was totally engrossing and even had an element of suspense. The chemistry between Johnny and Leah is strong and consistently present throughout. The sensual scenes are a strong 4.0 out of 5.0 (see More About Me for rating guidelines).
Overall, Whitehorse has won a place on my keeper shelf. After a string of reading humdrum novels, it was great to find I hadn't lost my interest in romance reading - I had just not chosen the right book. I now am looking for more books from Sutcliffe's backlist. She has proven to be an author I can count on to deliver a great story and delicious romance.
This book has helped me win my weight battle and helped me to be a better mom by allowing my kids to trust their own bodies!
