Simple Wisdom
This book taught me the SIMPLE WISDOM of my OWN BODY. To trust what my body tells me. This is something that we are ALL BORN with but it gets beaten out of us as we grow by all of the adults in our lives saying, "this will make you fat", "that will make you fat" etc etc.

This book has helped me win my weight battle and helped me to be a better mom by allowing my kids to trust their own bodies!

Thin Within: How to Eat and Live Like A Thin Person
Thin Within: How to Eat and Live Like a Thin Person is the first and only book on the subject of weight control which worked for me. The book outlines a philosophy and program for living which does not separate the "overweight" person from the "thin" people. For the first time in my life, I have been able to consider myself to be someone who is healthy and attractively slim as a natural state of being, rather than as a result of putting forth extraordinary effort just to have the body that "normal" people have.

I am grateful to have this book to refer to on a regular basis. It has given me a kind of freedom with regard to weight control issues that I never thought would be possible. I very highly recommend it.

Simply the best!
When I first came across this unique book about 10 years ago, I was quiet desperate. I had read probably 70+ books on the topic of weight loss and was ready to give up. As I read through the pages of Thin Within I knew I had finally found the true answer to permanent weight loss. It is so simple to follow because there is no diet! It's been over 10 years now and this no-nonsense approach to losing weight and keeping it off for good has never failed me. Buy it, you won't be sorry!

SIMPLY WONDERFUL!
THIS RAPIDLY-CHANGING PLOT KEPT MY INTEREST THROUGHOUT--WHICH IS MIRACULOUS, SINCE I BECOME EASILY BORED WITH SO-SO PLOTS AND USUALLY FIND MYSELF YAWNING A GIVING UP ON A BOOK BEFORE I FINISH IT!! BUT THIS ONE KEPT ME UP LATE, READING "JUST ONE MORE PAGE"( WHICH USUALLY TURNED INTO A CHAPTER) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE SEEKING A SUSPENSEFUL, ADVENTUROUS BOOK LADEN WITH MOMENTS OF HEART-STOPPING INTRIGUE, SPRINKLED BY "I-WONDER-WHO-THAT-WAS"? MYSTERY AND A TINGE OF ROMANCE.THE HERIONE WAS LOVABLE AND ADMIRABLE WITH HER FAST WIT AND HER ABILITY TO HANDLE TOUGH SITUATIONS--THE CHARACTERIZATION WAS MASTERFUL AND MS. BRENT'S DESCRIPTIVE STYLE WAS MOST APPEALING. AS ALWAYS, HER BOOKS GIVE A HISTORICAL BACKGROUND THAT WAS MOST INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING- JUST A VERY GOOD READ.

Unpredictable, intelligent and entertaining
Why is Madeleine Brent out of print???!!! Her books are so much fun to read. I got addicted to her with GOLDEN URCHIN and have loved her ever since. Her first gothic novel TREGARON'S DAUGHTER is highly suspenseful, completely unpredictable and has the stuff of the best film noir if it were made into a movie. Cadi Tregaron's voyages from a small English fishing village to the luxury of the kindly and well to do Morton family in Kent to the romance and mystery of Venice, Italy keep the reader's mind full of lush visuals and presents characters you like and care about. Excellent reading!!!

One of the GREATEST books I have ever read! A must read!
This book is a masterpiece. Cadi Tregaron is a true heroine and Madeline Brent is brilliant by creating such a terrfic story that leaves the reader thinking even after finishing the book. The book is a romantic suspense and it is more suspenful than romantic, which is a plus, but the romance that is strung throughtout the book will make your heart flutter and almost make you want to cry. It is not gushy, but rather the ideal way to have or find love. I loved it, I never wanted it to end and I'm sure most people will agree with me that it is a very difficult book to put down.

You Can Stop Smoking

My miracle book!
I quit after 15+ years of smoking. I read this book 2 times before quitting and then stopped 2 years ago and haven't looked back since! I was the most addicted person I know. I mailed my book to one brother who used it to quit. (We both are just amazed by this) He mailed it to my other brother... We shall see!!! I would buy these for any smoker I know. I feel like Ms Rogers gave me a new life! You should see how healthy I look! No more sore throats or headaches.

From hopeless to confident
I actually used Jacquelyn's prior book, Smokenders, but I assume this one is even better. I was hopelessly addicted to 1 pack a day and had no luck quitting despite many serious attempts. After failing with both gum and hypnosis, I discovered this book and it worked! My failures left me thinking that I might not have the will to *ever* beat smoking. Amazingly, and I still can't explain exactly what happened, after reading half the book and doing the exercises, I believed I could quit smoking, and did! Since then I have purchased the book for people in my life who express a desire to stop smoking. One of the things I liked most about the book is it never instructed me to put down the cigarettes. In fact, I read half the book with cigarette in hand until something clicked upstairs and I could let them go.

This book works...!

Will Take You From "Maybe" to "I Can Do It!"
I love this book; it was the catalyst to my quit. It's written for smokers - it never preaches - just gently takes you down the path to achieving the goal of being a non-smoker. You have to "work the program", but it's fun - and, if you do all the exercises etc. - you will feel you finally have power over your smoking. She gives you the tools to see you though too. I've bought several copies of this book to give away to smokers who might be considering quitting - this book will help make up anybodys mind if they are afraid of quitting.

One of the best parenting books I've read!
Ok, so I listened to the audiobook. It actually was better to listen to the audiobook because I could hear the author reading her book with her emotion and specific points accentuating specific things, like how something should be said, or a tone you could try with your kids.

I have to say that this book has given me more ideas than anything I've read so far in any book about strong willed kids. Basically I need to find what motivates my child and never, ever, give orders. It just doesn't work. The author places a lot of focus on incentive, rather than punishment. She doesn't advocate that kids should be able to run wild, or use being "strong-willed" as either a character defect OR an excuse for "bad" behavior.

There is some focus on being Christian, just an FYI. This may be good for some people, but not others.

In all, fantastic book!!

Positive Persuasion
Ah power struggles, common occurrences in a home containing two strong-willed adults that are parenting two strong-willed children. Yes, I am the parent of two persistent, determined, selective, high-spirited, adventurous children. Although exhausting at moments, I really prefer it this way. You see, given the knowledge and guidance, these children can utilize their strength in positive ways. They have the energy, force and talent to change the world.

But I need encouragement, guidance, and a full tool-belt in order to accomplish this parental task. One of the publications that has assisted me is You Can't Make Me (But I Can Be Persuaded) by author Cynthia Tobias Ulrich. This woman has a bachelor's degree in education, a master's degree in learning styles, and she is founder of Learning Styles Unlimited. She and her husband John, have twin boys, Michael & Robert. She is author of many inspiring books including "The Way They Learn." My first awareness of this fine author was during a speaking engagement she held in May of 1997. Since then I have read many of her books, and gleaned great benefit from her advice.

Cynthia Tobias provides insight on the mind of a strong-willed child (I prefer to call mine spirited, as per Mary Kucinka in Raising Your Spirited Child). She aids you in recognizing the choice patterns your children partake. You literally learn to share control without compromising authority. We are encouraged to decide what issues are negotiable, nonnegotiable, and to really choose our battles carefully. She provides practical advice for avoiding power struggles and enabling cooperation. Being strong-willed herself, having raised a strong-willed child, and having worked with many parents, enables Cynthia to give proven advice for working with this personality type.

Rooted from her own Christian walk, she encourages us parents to seek God's help in this process. God can assist us with the unconditional love that children need to feel. She points out the abundance of mercy and grace that God has for us, and that we can in turn provide to our children. Insights are provided on methods to teach a SWC self-motivation. Pointed out is the fact that we sometimes need to allow children to experience the consequences of "not doing something". We are reminded that we can enforce rules, but can't enforce compliance. It is stated that these children don't have a problem with authority; they challenge with how the authority is communicated to them. We are provided with a plan of action for helping our children to prepare for the best of their lives. We are instructed that from early childhood through encouraging our children to pursue their interests, they can recognize their strengths and preferences.

Additionally, examples of when something drastic needs to be done are provided. We are encouraged to hang on to hope and to continue providing our child with unconditional love.

So, you think you've blown it? Plenty of workable advice is provided! We as parents always are capable of telling our children what we do like about them. Further, we are able to example forgiveness to them.

In the epilogue we are reminded that most importantly we need to realize that:

"You Can't Make Me."
~Don't back me into a corner and leave me no choice.
~Don't demand that I obey without question.
~Don't tell me what I can or cannot do.
~Don't insist on something that can't be done

"But I Can Be persuaded!"
~Do value my ability to see the world from a unique perspective
~Do find ways to inspire me to change the world.
~Do ask me for my input.
~Do recognize my uniqueness even if it bothers you.

I highly recommend this book to parents of strong-willed children! I firmly believe that all educators and others who work with children will benefit from reading this book. When we recognize the positive in children and teach them how to work with their strengths, we are providing them with a healthy outlook.

Traitor
Published in Audio Cassette by Blackstone Audiobooks (October, 2000)
Authors: Ralph Peters, Edward Lewis, and David Hilder
Amazon base price: $49.95
Buy one from zShops for: $31.47
"I do not imagine that a one-man crusade disguised as a thriller can change much," says Ralph Peters, career soldier turned bestselling author, in an afterward to Traitor. Maybe not, but everybody on the Beltway who deals with (or votes on) defense budget issues should read this beautifully crafted story about a man of principle trying against all odds to do the right thing.

Lieutenant Colonel John Reynolds is "one of a legion of staff officers sweating blood to keep an underfunded Army alive." The army is faced with even more savage budget cuts if a project called NGFB (Next Generation Fighter Bomber) gets the approval that its corporate sponsor, Macon-Bolt Industries, seeks. Two of Reynolds's old Army buddies--a general and a former officer turned lobbyist for Macon-Bolt--die suddenly and suspiciously. But it's not until his own live-in ladyfriend, singer Tish O'Malley, is killed by a car bomb that Reynolds begins to realize his own life has somehow become linked with the fate of NGFB.

There are some superb scenes of action and many worthy opponents, especially a totally believable military madman called Roscoe "Punchy" Hunt who destroys works of art for dramatic effect. But the real villain in Traitor is a giant military-industrial-political complex determined to suck up as much public money as it can. People like Reynolds and Peters can only nip at its heels. The author has also expressed his strong opinions in the acclaimed nonfiction book Fighting for the Future: Will America Triumph? --Dick Adler

Average review score:

Great story - very realistic
The portrayal of our defense industry in this story is unfortunately accurate. We have placed so much emphasis on "smart weapons", that we have forgotten the real effectiveness of our military. The action and pace of this book will keep the reader enthralled and they will not want to put it down.

best Peters in years
I've read almost all of Ralph Peters' novels, and this is probably my favorite to date. I passed it over in hardcover--frankly it didn't sound very interesting. I couldn't have been more wrong: it's one of the best written, engrossing novels I've read in a long time. Peters is one of the few military thriller writers that can name drop Thomas Hardy novels and actually make us believe his characters read them. I know what a cliche this sounds, but I couldn' t put it down. Peters has within him his best novel yet--some day he'll write the Once An Eagle of his generation of officers.

Contractors Can Really Be Traitors
After 25 years in the defense industry, watching the Services buy big things they don't need while neglecting small things they do (like enough pay so the troops don't have to be on food stamps), it continues to disturb me that the American taxpayer continues to allow Congress to sell out to what Ike Eisenhower called the "military-industrial complex". TRAITOR could have been a documentary. This is a great novel, thrilling and unpredictable, but it is also based on the real world and all the more gripping because of this.

this author an awesome discovery!
In two weeks I have read books 2,3 & 4 of the Heathersleigh series. I am purchasing #1 to read. I got so involved in the characters of the series. The thing which impressed me was that, in the process of reading them, I began to be aware of people in my life - and myself - who suffered the same spiritual afflictions as the Rutherfords and their friends; and more painfully so, was brought to a point of reassessing myself and my motives in life. I would think "how could amanda be like that" and a gentle nudging of the spirit would remind me that I, too, have allowed such pettiness in my life.. Not only entertaining and full of historial and geographical knowledge, but full of spiritual awakening.

Excellent Book!
Out of all of Michael Phillips' books, this one is my favorite! I haven't been able to put it down because it is so fasinating and captivating! If you want an excellently written book that has explicit research, this book is for you. The characters are interesting and very real, whether it is Catharine and George exploring Heathersleigh Hall, the McFees visiting, or Amanda with her seemingly endless problems. I studied World War I in school this year and all the events that happened previously are in this book, which makes the book very interesting for me as well. There is nothing in this book I did not like! Read it yourself!

Extremely Gripping!
This book is one of the most exciting and gripping books I've ever read! Amanda and her family are very real characters in very real situations. Michael Phillips has done a fantastic job with this series. I can't wait to read the next one! If you haven't read this series, I really recommend it. It will change you and your outlook on life. It has real characters, real plots, and a history lesson too!

Wise Children
Published in Audio Cassette by Sterling Audio Books (October, 1998)
Authors: Angela Carter and Miriam Margolyes
Amazon base price: $69.95
Average review score:

Hilarious, Dramatic, Different
Wise Children is a funny yet touching tale of the lives of a theatrical family. Narrated by one of the Chance twins, Dora, it charts the ups-and-downs of the twins' lives, as well as encounters with both loved and hated relatives; with almost every member of the vast family a theatrical performer.

I've read quite a few Angela Carter books, and (while Wise Children is still written in that unmistakable Carter style) it seems far more light-hearted than, for example: Love or The Magic Toyshop, and has a completely different vocabulary, as Carter adopts the voice of Dora Chance -- deliciously witty, with a strong feminist tone, relatively simple vocab, and an entirely unrelenting appetite for drama.
I was a little dubious about reading Wise Children, as the blurb implied a knowledge of Shakepeare would be beneficial when it came to understanding the book, and that the multiple sets of twins and family secrets would become highly confusing. While any subtle Shakepeare references (aside from the obvious) went right over my head, it seems that they played a minor part in the book, as it's full of raucous wit, bubbling personality, theatrical dramatics, and an inexhaustable thirst for life. As for the numerous characters and their relation to each other: Carter manages to evoke such a vivid picture and to bestow each character with such simplistic, unique features, that you become invovled in the Hazard/Chance story (therby avoiding any confusion.)
While the ending to this book seemed a little too good to be true, it fitted in with the unrealistic aspect of the book, and the dramatic nature of nearly every major character.

A great read (as with almost every Angela Carter book) I highly recommend Wise Children.

Make no mistake, this is Carter's piece de resistance
Angela Carter's last novel,"Wise Children", may well have been the crowning glory to her illustrious career as a fiction writer. It's a coup de grace and her piece de resistance. You don't need to be an afficionado of Shakespeare to appreciate the dazzling humour of Carter's story and celebration of "wrong-side-of-the-trackness" in a theatrical family of multigenerational twins (the Hazards) or thrill to their cross-Atlantic adventures but it'll surely heighten your sense of pleasure if you're familiar with the Bard's comic characters and able to pick them out from among the novel's fabulously diverse and colourful personalities. The novel starts on a promising note and quickly settles into a swinging groove, which Carter skillfully sustains with a momentum that just builds and builds, constantly hitting new highs just when you think it can't get any better. A diabolically clever mix of pathos and humour maintains the balance between realism and a sense of the ridiculous which is unmistakeably Carter. Her legendary tongue twisting, mind bending, linguistic pyrotechnics is in full flower and display throughout. She's in top form and those familiar with the Bard's "King Lear", "Winter's Tale" and "Tempest", among others, will delight in the resonance that the novel's many references evoke. The denouement is also a masterful sleight of hand that is distinctively Carter. "Wise Children" is quite the most fascinating and entertaining novel I have read and enjoyed all year. I finished the book with such a good feeling it carried me for days. This is an "absolute must" for those who love contemporary literature of the finest quality. Don't miss it !

genuine genius
angela carter was the finest english novelist of the last half century. and her reputation can only continue to grow. she continued to improve throughout her career, and wise children, her last novel before her premature demise in 1992.

wise children is typical of carter's style. she mixes the very high with the very low. an immensely intellectual writer, she nevertheless enjoys a good bawdy farce and a smattering of innuendo. this novel (for a plot summary see elsewhere) is a jaw-dropping display in the use and manipulation of language. there is sheer joy in every word. carter's confidence in her own wit was at a premium. it reads in one way as a feminist re-working of shakespeare; all the bard's devices are in view but it is all carried off with such vim and vigour and a deceptively throw-away attitude that it is a joy to read. this is a novel that demands to be read and re-read. all human life is here. get it on your bookshelf now!

Valley Of Fear
The story is a report on the actual events surrounding the arrest, conviction, and hanging of the Molly McGuyers in Schuylkill and Carbon Countys, Pennsylvania at the end of the 19th century. In the story the Mollys are like the gansters. In the Pa. coal region they are folk heros who fought and died for workers wrights. See the movie, "Molly McGuyers" staring Sean Conrey, it's an exact match.

The actual Pinkerton, McGowan, Died of old age in California.

Classic Doyle
The last of the four Sherlock Holmes novels, and one of the two best. It contains more detection in its first section than The Hound of the Baskervilles, with Holmes (off-stage for much of The Hound) actively investigating the murder at Birlstone, and drawing his ever-fascinating deductions from raincoats and dumb-bells; indeed it is the only pure detective story among the four, with the reader given every opportunity to solve the crime. Although the solution is justly famous, it is but a variation on "The Norwood Builder," at much greater length. The second half of the tale concerns the doings of the Pinkerton agent Birdy Edwardes in the eponymous Valley, terrorised by the Freemasons, a gripping and powerful account which is perhaps of greater interest than the detection.

THE VALLEY OF FEAR
'The Valley of Fear'. A real page turner but what makes it most memorable for me is not that Holmes is at his best, but Conan Doyle is. After reading this book I recommend you to read this book because it was a suspense story. The whole story moves around Mcginty who was a big criminal in the valley of vermisa also called the valley of fear. There was only one person who could face to that criminal and his name was Jack McMurdo. He behaved as a gangster and he had taken many risks in his life and he was not afraid to take more risks. Don't miss 'The Valley of Fear'. It's terrifying, exciting, and best of all, real.

One of my favorites
Whitehorse is the hot and steamy story about childhood lovers who were torn apart by family. They meet again as adults and though the road to reconcilliation is not easy, they are now old enough to know that love is worth all the pain.

Bold, tension filled, and passionate.
Leah Star (Foster) D.V.M., after graduating from college, going through a divorce and giving birth to a handicap child has moved back home. When she comes home life is different. Now she is the one trying to get by and living in an older home. And the young Native American she once professed to love and her father professed to hate now owns her fathers horse ranch, is living in her home and sleeping in her parents' former bed.

Johnny Whitehorse is a successful actor and model, as well as the owner of Whitehorse Farm, but his success seems to be bittersweet because those who meant the most to him are not there to share it. Johnny files a lawsuit and is representing thousands of Native Americans who feel their money is being mismanaged by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and if that isn't enough some of the shading dealings lead right back to Leah's father, Senator Foster.

Before the dust settles on this one, someone will be dead, some won't know whom to trust, and others will see the truth for what it is. The ending is very satisfying.

Deep & intriguing - fantastic contemporary romance
Whitehorse was a superb contemporary romance. This is my third Sutcliffe novel and my favorite to date. I liked this one even more than Darkling, I Listen. Katherine Sutcliffe immediately draws the reader into her books. I love picking up a book and realizing within a few minutes that I am already hooked and in for a really good ride. After reading Bad Moon Rising and Darkling, I Listen, I anticipated another dark novel - although dark novels are definitely not my first choice for reading. But Whitehorse was in no way a dark novel although it definitely falls into the category of serious, dramatic romance.

Johnny Whitehorse is a modern day Apache Native American who happens to also be very successful. He has a law degree, is known far and wide as a very famous model, and also is a popular actor. In addition, he owns several thriving businesses and is very active in politics as he fights for the rights of his people, the Mescalero Apache. Yes, it sounds like a bit much for someone to achieve by the mere age of thirty but that thought never occurred until now - as I write this review. I was so immersed in Johnny's character that I didn't think about his overwhelming success in nearly everything. However, Johnny has experienced at least one great failure that he cannot seem to forget and that was losing his first love, a senator's daughter by the name of Leah.

Leah Foster Starr is a practicing large animal veterinarian, the mother of a disabled child with cerebral palsy, divorced, and unfortunately, the daughter of a senator. She has never gotten along well with her father, particularly after he forced her to break off her relationship with Johnny Whitehorse, her first love, and seemingly, her only love. She has moved back to the town where she grew up and is barely making enough money to support herself, her son and his live in caretaker, and pay for all his medical bills and equipment. She grabs happiness wherever she may - particularly with her son, but life is hard and we find her expressing her anger and frustration at life more than a little in the opening pages of the book. She knows that Johnny is occasionally back in town and hopes fervently not to see him. She believes he hates her - he certainly has reason to do so. And she knows without doubt that she doesn't hate him in the least.

Johnny is back in town. He now owns the horse ranch Leah's father had once owned. Once he sees Leah again, after twelve years, it is not long before he realizes he can't leave her alone. They both fight, uselessly, their mutual attraction and find themselves caught up in some pretty serious complications. But this story, although primarily a romance, is also about so much more. We read about the plight of many Native Americans, the joys and sorrows of a child with cerebral palsy, and some of the intricacies of horse racing. Not all of this can be addressed in depth in one novel, but Sutcliffe is successful in bringing together many scenarios to produce a novel that is rich in experience of many subjects we don't often see written in romance novels. It was totally engrossing and even had an element of suspense. The chemistry between Johnny and Leah is strong and consistently present throughout. The sensual scenes are a strong 4.0 out of 5.0 (see More About Me for rating guidelines).

Overall, Whitehorse has won a place on my keeper shelf. After a string of reading humdrum novels, it was great to find I hadn't lost my interest in romance reading - I had just not chosen the right book. I now am looking for more books from Sutcliffe's backlist. She has proven to be an author I can count on to deliver a great story and delicious romance.
