a must read
paper moon the book. from someone who grew up watching the movie. i remember being a little bitty thing sitting on the floor with my toys watching this movie with my mom. ive always loved it. (granted mom was a little bit more weary when tatum oneal came out with "little darlings" with christie mcnichol *laughs*)
well then i found out, now at the age of 24, that its a book. wow, im fast. lol
the book is somewhat different but the same story. mose is played under the name "long boy" though his true name is still moses. they include cons they didnt put in the movie. they put in some rather important to the plot parts about the story. they talk about addies mother which wasnt done much in the movie. also the burial scene wasnt in there because addie had known "long boy" since she was very little and they had always had a connection unlike in the movie where addie meets him for the first time at the funeral at opening of the film where he is reluctant to take her on the road.
the story also takes place over her being from ages 6-11 unlike the movie which didnt go that long through things. the book after you start it you cant put it down. i was up last night in the wee hours of the morning still going "ok, just one more chapter". its something that you should either see before the movie or after it, though if i could have gone back i would have read it first but i was way too young. when i first saw it i was still practically gnawing on the bars of my play pen...

PAPER MOON RULES!
Too long out of print, this paperback is a beauty. A compulsively readable book. Addie Pray and Long Boy take the South by storm. It's fun and fast, but also weighty and moving. The amazing movie was based just on the first third.

PAPER MOON
This is an excellent book. Having long been a fan of the movie, what a joy to discover the book that started it all. Addie Pray is a hilarious and charming narrator and her adventures pulled me happily along. A real treat. For anyone who likes stories of sassy girls growing up.

A Return to Christmas
This season something extraordinary is about to reveal itself. A Return to Christmas is an impenetrably, exciting book by Chris Heimerdinger. When you start reading this book you will not be able to stop. Will the Holiday's rediscover something they been without for eight years? We follow the lives of two boys named Chess and Artemus whose paths cross in unusual and unexpected ways. Is it possible that Chess could be Artie's brother? I assure you that this book will leave you at the edge of your seat. We loved it! It was the best book that we have ever read!

Brilliant
Chris Heimerdinger is one of the best writers in weaving a tales so real you can taste. Not only are his stories highly entertaining, they have good messages to send us. In A Return to Christmas, Chris writes a compelling tale of a modern day prince and pauper. It tells of the struggles of one family, having lost their love of Christmas and thrown into a pit of grief they cannot climb out of, until a light of hope shines. This book has value on all levels. To those who have not read this, get it now and read it. You'll be glad you did.

Absolutely great
My wife recommended me this book. I read the german translation in one day. It's a short but also a great story. I think the most important thing I must say about it: I felt happy when I finished. If you have a sense of family, buy this book. You won't regret!!

The Source of My Strength
In tragedy we need to know what the source of our strength is.
When I lost someone I loved I needed to remember that Christ is the Source of my strength. Thank you Charles Stanley for your guidance and for sharing your knowledge of the word.
I have also found it helpful to use another Christian book to help me continue to heal. It is Write From Your Heart, A Healing Grief Journal.
The answers and the comfort are in the word and in Him.

ENJOYABLE AND EASY TO FOLLOW
Charles Stanley's "The Source of My Strength" is simply wonderful. It was easy to follow and understand, and his examples were great. I especially liked the way he conveyed his feelings for Christ by creating imagery in the minds of the readers/listeners (I got the audio book, unabridged).

Mr. Stanley offers biblical principles that will help you discover your liberty in Christ so you can live fully and freely every day.

Get this! You won't be sorry!

Dr. Stanley Is Truly In Touch With God's Grace...
I bought this book because it was on sale at a local book store. I had seen Stanley speak before and figured it would be good reading. Little did I know this little book could steer my entire life in the right direction! Dr. Stanley just seems to have a gift of easing the truth through thick sculls like mine. Allowing the light in where it was completely dark. I recommend this book to anyone who has had anything go wrong in their life. My Charles Stanley collection continues to grow. God bless him!

my peace of mind
I found Mrs. Vanzant's book to be very inspirational to me. i was very low in my self esteem being a dark skinned sister with hort hair but Iyanla has taught me to love myself first. since i read the book i have been such a positive person and i owe it all to her.

Tapping the Power Within
I have been able to put into perspective, how the depths of spirit can be in the palms of our hands. The author takes me from a level of self to a level of spirit and I remain in awe as I see how truth is told to me every day. Prayer has always been important in my family. The altar also plays a focal point in our lives ( my family) as we continue the journey and I enjoy just feeling a sense of oneness that before, I had ignored.

It Has Been Written!!!
In the year 1992, I first found Ms. Vanzant's book and was immediately drawn to Her Vison, Knowledge and neverending quest forthe TRUTH. This and all Her books should be read, analysed, synthesized, evaluated andpracticed for everyone! All God's children should be invited to "Seek the TRUTH"

Great Book!!
"Pathfinder" by Richard Burns is a great book. This is a very honest narrative about a military unit most people know nothing about. Someone has to be the first in to a landing zone and guide the "birds" in. That's what the Pathfinders do. They are the eyes and ears for the helocopters.

This is an especially good book because Richard Burns seems like somebody you knew in your neighborhood growing up. This isn't a story about some larger than life make believe hero. This is the real life kind. The book is hard to put down and will leave you wanting to learn more about this small unit of men who wear the black hats.

I was sad to read in the introduction about Richard Burns recent death to cancer. It is good to know that his memory will live on with this book.

A Factual Account of Viet Nam History
I was a Pathfinder in the 101st Airborne after Burns and served two consecutive tours. Although I did not know him, I recognized many names from the book including Torch, the dog. I was rivetted by this factual recounting which was eerily real. With few exceptions, this could have been my diary. I am ordering two more copies for my family so they can better understand a very significant part of my experience. Airborne... all the way!

Very well written
This book never drags, and kept my interest throughout. Different from a Special Forces story, Burns seemed to be on the receiving end of enemy fire most of the time while he guided helicopters for landings. He knew some of the other well known authors on LRRP's and special forces in Vietnam. He was lucky to not be hurt while being blown over by mortars or lightning, and also have a dud mortar round land a foot away. Very upbeat and refreshing.

The Railway Man

Authors: Eric Lomax and Bill Paterson

Eric Lomax, a British army soldier, was captured by the Japanese during the Singapore campaign of 1942. A railroad buff since a child, he took strange pleasure in his work as a POW on the Burma-Siam Railroad, which was later the subject of the film Bridge Over the River Kwai. When his captors discovered his detailed drawings of the railway, he was suspected as a spy and tortured for years. Fifty years later he discovered that the interpreter during his tortures was still alive. The two arranged a meeting and Lomax forgave him. Here is the exciting, moving and truthful account.
Average review score:

"The Railway Man" is not to be missed!!!
You may think you've read enough harrowing accounts of someone's life as a prisoner of war, but what sets this memoir apart is the resolution of the author's searing memories of one Japanese tormentor in particular, and his life-changing efforts to find and reconnect with that man when both are in their 60s and beyond. Its an incredibly compelling and moving tale, from beginning to end, and beautifully written.

the real River Kwai
I first heard about Mr. Lomax in the "Guidepost" magazine, and was eleven when I read this "the Railway Man". And I must say, it's a painful read. After reading an eye-witness account of the treatment of the prisonners, "Bridge to the River Kwai" seems so...tame. This is the real stuff.

It's graphic, like when he drescribes the brutal treatment at the hands of the captors, the endless interrogations, being swarmed over by red ants when they were put in cages, and about the man who tortured him all those years.

Then he talks about going back to England, marrying, and then the jolt of his former torturer being alive. And that they met up again, and how he forgave.

I'm surprised it's out of print, and I still think it should be more widely read. The story may be gut-wrenching (in more ways than one), but when he survived it all, one can't help but wonder how, when so many have died along the way.

Humility and Heroism
Lomax is a common man has survived and overcome the most brutal of human sufferings. He shows that in all of us is the capacity for greatness. His language is to the point with a tone of a man that is reluctantly telling his story more for our own need to understand the POW experience than for any personal aggrandizement. As others have commented, there is a real gutcheck here. It is a true emotional rollercoaster and worth it.

Wag the Dog.
This delightful story tells the tale of a boy who meets a kindly dragon on the edge of town. The boy and the dragon become friends and start spending a lot of time together. Then the people of the town find out about the dragon and send for St. George. The boy meets with St. George and takes him to meet the dragon. All three soon become friends and find themselves in a quandry. George doesn't want to kill the dragon and the dragon has no desire to kill George. A plan is hatched and at the end of the story everyone lives happily.

It's really great reading this to younger children. It's got a great message about not prejudging others. It also shows how people can sometimes get everything they want, without anyone having to get hurt by it. That doesn't happen often, but it's nice to be reminded now and again that it can.

A classic for all ages.
Thank goodness this classic tale is still available for readers of all ages. The timeless nature of this tale endures. A satisfying tale and delightful ending for everyone.

A Treasure!
Author of historical fiction.

This book is a treasure for your library. It brings endless pleasure, and is the kind of story that spans all ages.

It is the tale of a boy and his dragon who lives up on the Downs. In spite of the bad reputation dragons have, the boy and he become quick friends. Saint George shows up to do battle with the reluctant lizard, and the boy arranges a mock battle, unbeknown to the villagers that pleases everyone.

Arch-Amazon
This was a solid but kind of simplistic entry in the Outlandersseries with a strong central adversary in Ambika...though she came offas Xena's evil twin. She was just a little too much of the arch-Amazon to be be believable. All in all, it was a fun book with plenty of action and energy.

Entertaining and engaging
This entry into the Outlanders series was very entertaining with an engaging new character and new locales. Some of the on-going characters were relegated to the back seat but the book still held my interest all the way through

Excellent work!
Wreath of Fire is an exceptionally well written novel. Mel Odom was able to introduce a brand new enemy in the form of a sensual female warrior named Ambika.

He did an excellent job in bringing over the tension between Kane and Brigid and was able to write the characters in the manner that we've all come to expect over the past few years. He also did a wonderful job in bringing up new questions regarding the Barons and their needs for ore and computer equipment.

The data brought up about the western islands was very well written and I enjoyed the history that he created for the novel. That includes all the history on Ambika as well.

This novel is an exceptional tale and I hope that Mel will continue to produce them when he gets the time from his hectic writing schedule.

Prelude To Glory #1-Our Sacred Honor-Hey Grandpa!-Great!
The book Our Sacred Honor, written by Ron Carter, is very well put together. It is humorous frequently, and is very entertaining. For example, at one part it is describing how this great, powerful, huge army of British is marching to Concord...and then they fall right into a bog. There are many funny parts in this book that I would want to share. It is a riot! I really loved this book, not only because of the humorous parts, but also because it is very descriptive, and the words sound so good together. There is only one thing I don't like was the gore. It is not very often, but at times it is nauseating. I really like the way he words some sentences like, 'He jerked the reins to stop and the horse battled for breath.' It is descriptive and the words work together like a river going to sea.
The story is centered around a family who is on the colonial side-the eldest son (Matthew) is engaged to a lovely young woman, and the eldest daughter is stunned by this young lieutenant on the British side.
It is packed with action, war and adventure. Our Sacred Honor is only the first fantastic volume of a whole series by Ron Carter (my grandpa!). These books are very well written and should be read time and time again. Enjoy!

Prelude to Glory (All 3 volumes)
This is by far the most excellent series of historically based fiction that I have ever read. I was there with the soldiers as they were fighting for the freedom and liberty that we hold so dear today. I had to put an extra blanket on my bed while I was reading about the conditions that were suffered through during the winter. I was ducking for cover as the cannons thundered and the musket balls whistled past. The interlacing of histroical fact with a very few fictional characters is masterful. Mr. Carter should be congratulated on bringing the struggle of the American Revolution to life in an entirely readable manner. I wish I could have studied American history in high school using Mr. Carter's works, I certainly would have done better and enjoyed the class much more. Even if you do not read them for the historical significance, you should read them for the enjoyment of reading a very good series of books.

Prelude to Glory series of books
I read the first three volums of this series, and they were spell binding. After reading each of these books, I shared them with my friends, who also couldn't put them down. I am now hoping that there will be a vol. 4. For any one who wants to learn about for formation of our country, these books are a must. I highly recomend them for any one who is a member of the Daughters of the American Revelution. Understanding just what it took for gain the freedom of the United States, will give you a better appreciation of what it took to make our country free.

This is odd
Have you noticed the other five reviews here haven't reviewed this book at all, but just talk about McCammon retiring? This has got to be the strangest set of reviews.

Anyways, who here like Domino's Pizza better than Pizza Hut?

McCammon Whereabouts
For those of you wondering... I read on a website about a year ago that Robert was coming out with a new novel... they even had a picture of the cover art. I don't remember the naem, but Robert said it was going to be a real departure from his work with more supernatural leanings. Hope it comes out soon!

Swan Song
