Redeeming Love
Published in Audio Cassette by Recorded Books (February, 2001)
Authors: Francine Rivers and Kate Forbes
Amazon base price: $103.00
In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850 and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns to love him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best. --Cindy Crosby

Absolutely Wonderful!
I have read a lot of books and I have a lot of favorites (some, I thought to be "the best book I've ever read"), so when my friend gave me this book on tape to listen to, I didn't really want to. I had my favorite authors and had never heard of Francine Rivers. Why listen to it? WOW! Has Ms. Rivers changed my mind. I must say this is absolutely, unequivocally, the best book I have ever read (well listened to!)

It's a thought-provoking feel-good story! I love it! You will not be disappointed. Half-way through listening to it I got on-line and bought it! I can't wait until it gets here to hold it in my hands and savor every word!!

The best book I have ever read!
Ok, I know you read the reviews, and it's always " oh this is a great book," or " you just have to read it," " its the best book in the whole wide world" and you think, "yep, heard that line said before..." well, I don't want you to think that I'm just writing this review and coming up with those lines. BUT I'm serious, this is the best book I have ever read. I have a read a ton of books in my day, and Francine Rivers is by far the best author I have come across. I also recommend the Mark of the Lion series by her. Those were excellent also. Francine Rivers has wonderfuly portrayed the book of Hosea through this story. It shows God's unconditional love for us, no matter what we've done in the past. He loves for who we are. Its wonderful, isn't it? I highly recommend these books and I hope all of you who read them enjoy them as much as I did.

amazing and beautiful
never before have i read retelling of any story where the author was able to capture the beauty of the original in quite the way that Rivers has with Redeeming Love. it is simply an amazing book and one that as a reader i could not pull myself away from. i actually spent one entire day reading it--i think i forgot to even eat that day because i was so entranced!

Don't Die, My Love
Don't Die, My Love is probably my favorite book ever. (And I've read an awful lot of books in my 10 years.) Anyway, Luke and Julie have been dating since eighth grade. He asked Julie to marry him in sixth and she said "get lost bozo." Now they are in their junior year of high school. Luke has been sick for a while but refuses to get checked out because of money problems. He and Julie fight a little bit about it. She finally convinces him to go to the doctor and they find out that he has Hodgkin's Disease which is a type of cancer. Note: The beginning of the book is a bit boring. But if you get past that it will be worth it because the parts after that are so moving. Julie sticks by him the entire time. A lot more happenes in between all of that but I am not going to say what it is. Here is a description of Julie and Luke: Julie is a high school student who has the guy everyone at school wants. She is a straight A student whose mother is constantly trying to get her focused on applying to colleges. She feels that Julie focuses to much on Luke. Julie is a wonderful character who like any other student is constantly worrying about what to wear and making plans for Friday night. Once Luke is diagnosed with cancer she realizes how much more there is to life than parties. Luke is a football star who in his junior year already has college coaches offering scholarships. His mother works in the steel mills of their town. His father died in a steel mill fall when he was seven. He and Julie plan to get married after they graduate college.

I thought this book was absolutely amazing. I feel so close to the characters and the dialogue is incredible. Don't heisitate about buying this book. You will love it! Great job Lurlene!

Other books to check out by Lurlene McDaniel are Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, Telling Christina Goodbye, Let Him Live and many others.

I've read it five times...and counting!!!!!!
"Don't Die My Love" is the best Lurlene McDaniel book so far. I've read it five times and I've cried every time. Julie reminds me of what I would do if the guy I was in love with had a deadly disese. The characters make you fall in love with them. It is one of the most sad, romantic, tear-jerking, all around PERFECT books. My friend Brittany and I got stuck on Lurlene's books a couple years ago and haven't been able to stop reading them, plus got most of our friends to read them.

The best of Lurlene McDaniel
Don't Die My Love is one of the first books I ever read by Lurlene McDaniel. And to this day it is still my favorite. I began reading her books when I was in Middle School and now I am 23 years old and still rereading her books. I am now collecting her series in order to keep them in my classroom when I become a Middle School Teacher. This book helps to teach about Leukemia and also about teenage love. Julie and Luke are very realistic characters. I also believe it's good for teens to be able to read stories that open their awareness. Many of McDaniel's books helped me become more aware of myself and how I treated others. I hope that she continues to extend these messages to young people through her writing. Don't Die My Love is a truly inspirational story.

wow
what can i say?? this is a great book. i (being a huge raistlin fan)wanted to read this book as soon as i found out it exsisted. i rember reading chronicles, looking at raistlin and going 'here is the most intresting charicter i have ever read about.' the soulforge is about raistlin growing up as a child to taking the test in the tower of high sorcery. in this book u realize that that even as a child raistlin's best friend was his ambition. u could see how and why he became so.. dark.. in chronicles and legonds. u also see that raistlin wasn't always as dark-hearted. he wasn't born wearing the black robes, despite what many may think. in this book u see him as a, all arond ok person. he's not a saint or anything, but he isn't a bad guy either. i highly recomend this book to any dl fan, but i dont segust that any1 new to dl should read this. start with chronicles, and then legonds. that way u get to know raistlin, so to speak. i think that this is an exelent book. enjoy.

Amazing Prequel!!
This book is a great prequel to the Dragonlance Chronicles. It relays the story of the power-hungry mage, Raistlin, and his muscle-bound brother, Caramon. Raistlin starts out as a child, and grows to be in his early 20's when he takes The Test at the Tower of Wayreth.

I think this is an amazing book, and recommend it to anyone who has read the Dragonlance Chronicles. Margaret Weis does a great job of keeping the reader in suspense and giving great background information on the group that was in the Dragonlance Chronicles. Brothers In Arms is the sequel to this book. BUY THEM BOTH NOW!!!

Still in suspense
I'm about on page 300 and I'm in so much suspense waiting for Raistlin to cast a fireball or something Its wierd how they never talk about all the books he got in the cronicles or legends well if you want to chat with an expert dragonlance fan e-mail me at ty_luckett@yahoo.com

I Really, Really Enjoyed the Book from Cover to Cover!!!!!
I enjoyed reading Tryin to Sleep. I found it to be Excellent writing (An Outstanding Story). I enjoyed it so much I bought three copies, for my friends and mother. TTS was recommended to me by my good friend Rod. We both agree that it was an outstanding novel. I appreciated all three characters. I believe that the friendship Pat, Gayle and Marcus had was one in which if everyone had or experienced, this world would be a better place. In closing I would like to say, This is one of the best books I've read thus far. It was so had to put the book down. I'm sure you ladies are writing your next book as we speak. Do you think there could be a sequel? I look forward to and can't wait to read it. Tryin to Sleep is a novel that felt very real. If the second book is anything like TTS, I know it will also be a best seller. Congratulations on an Excellent book.

An Exquisite Novel
Psst...Psst! Listen up, my fellow readers you ain't read nothin' 'till you've read "Trying To Sleep In the Bed you Made" an exquisite novel by Virginia DeBerry & Donna Grant. I didn't have to read anybody's review in order to read this book. I was simply capitivated by the title, and instantaneously I knew that this was one novel that this was one novel worth reading. I had the sheer pleasure of reading this book back in the summer of '98, and let's just say that this is one summer that I'll never forget. This is one of my favorite books along with "Dissapearing Acts & Big Girls Don't Cry". I had the privilege of owning this novel in hardcover (wouldn't have it any other way). Today this novel proudly stands tall and graces my exquisite book collection. I consider this book near and dear to my heart, I treasure it as if it were part of a Brittanica Encyclodpedia Collection. I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it, it was as if I saw bits and pieces of my life and my friends lives unfolding right before the very pages. Pat, Marcus and Gayle are characters that each and every one of us can identify with. In this book we experience their joys, pains and struggles of life. It took me a week to finish reading this novel and I have to admit, it simply took my breath away. I was overwhelmed with emotion after having completed reading this book. I just had to write to the authors to congratulate them on this well written treasure. I still have their response letter I received back tucked away neatly between the pages of my book. Personally, I think that this is one of the best books every written. This book left an impact on my life in so many ways than one. It taught me not to take life for granted, the way so many of us do. After reading this "I definetly try to make my bed carefully". There's definetly not enough stars to rate this novel; I give this book a perfect ten just for the way it's touched my life. If you don't already own a copy of this book go out and get one, and if you do write a review or recommend it to someone. It's worth every penny and every minute of your time. Keep up the good work, they've definetly inspired me to write.

Best book by a black author ever
Although it's been some time since I read this book, I haven't been able to forget the powerful impact it had on me. All I will say is, you never know how someone will turn out so you are better off not prejudging people. Negative situations can yield positive results; and having all the advantages in life is no guarantee that a person will benefit or even appreciate what they've been given.

Lonesome Dove (Vol 1 and 2)
Published in Audio Cassette by Dove Books Audio (November, 1992)
Authors: Larry McMurtry and Lee Horsley
Amazon base price: $69.95
Larry McMurtry, in books like The Last Picture Show, has depicted the modern degeneration of the myth of the American West. The subject of Lonesome Dove, cowboys herding cattle on a great trail-drive, seems like the very stuff of that cliched myth, but McMurtry bravely tackles the task of creating meaningful literature out of it. At first the novel seems the kind of anti-mythic, anti-heroic story one might expect: the main protagonists are a drunken and inarticulate pair of former Texas Rangers turned horse rustlers. Yet when the trail begins, the story picks up an energy and a drive that makes heroes of these men. Their mission may be historically insignificant, or pointless--McMurtry is smart enough to address both possibilities--but there is an undoubted valor in their lives. The result is a historically aware, intelligent, romantic novel of the mythic west that won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

The Fastest You'll Ever Read 900 Pages
This is a terrific book. I was daunted by it's length and actually had it hanging around my office for a month before deciding to wade in. Needless worry on my part. Larry McMurty's classic cowboy novel is one of the most delicious works of fiction I have ever read.

This is a book about the Old West. Cowboys, Texas Rangers, whores, gamblers, drinkin', cattle, indians, sheriffs, cattle drives, the Plains --- its all here. The main story revolves around a group of retired Texas Rangers, bored with running a minor ranch in the two-bit town of Lonesome Dove, who decide to take one of the last great adventures left in a West that is almost conquored. They decide to gather and drive a cattle herd from the Rio Grand to Montanna -- one of the last open areas where men could stake a claim and subjugate raw land.

What McMurty does so well is craft believable and highly entertaining characters. Gus and Call, the two Rangers are two of American literatures most memorable figures. The story revolves around their ambitions -- very different as are their personalities -- and the way they affect about twenty or so other characters who people the book.

This is a big book. It has several strong sub plots that could have been novels in themselves. The author ties each together in a manner that lends the unembarrassed moniker of epic to the whole.

The characters are each well developed and believable. Human to the last, there are no super heros here -- no Tom Clancy like Jack Clarks who can do no wrong. But several of the major characters are heroic in their struggles to survive and overcome the rough obstacles that frontier life often entailed. They are made more believable because of their flaws and mistakes and the less than direct paths they follow in following their souls. The villains and those in between are also memorably drawn and made full in the telling of this tale.

The West protrayed in Lonesome Dove is not the type found in Hollywood protrayals. McMurty's West is brutal, lonely and very tough. Living is hard, life often tragic and cheap. The joys are either hard earned or purchased in the form of liquor and/or women. Altogether a more realistic portrayal of life at the edge of law and civilization than the romanticized version often held forth in movies.

McMurty's dialogue is wonderful, creating a warmth that makes the characters stay with the reader. This is a book I could not put down and was sorry to finish. A treasure that any devote of good fiction will enjoy. "Dern good," as Gus Mcrae would say.

My Dime's Worth of Gushing
When fellow book lovers ask me to name my all-time favorite novel, Larry McMurtry's magnum opus impulsively rises to my lips. Upon reflection, this answer might not be fully accurate, as I've clutched many great books to my soul in the years since I first read Lonesome Dove. Nevertheless, I don't think this instinctive first response will ever really change. From the opening sentence, when Gus exiles the disruptive pigs from the sanctuary of his porch, I was pulled into this book like a starving prairie orphan longing to trail after these powerful characters and find companionship, sustenance and adventure in their midst.

While McMurtry tells a great tale, Lonesome Dove is essentially a story about love -- bedrock love, that is, in all its bittersweet, complicated immutability. It's about a friendship between two men who share a bond so strong, forged of history and loyalty, that it bridges large disparities of individual character. It's about a true but unfulfilled love between a man and woman that really wants to stay precisely there, deriving energy from the protracted state of tension. And it's about the unrequited love of a son for a father, who so naturally inhabits his role as leader, but remains achingly unable to breach the isolation of his dominion.

Of course, Gus is my favorite character - a man so full of courage, humor, verve and effortless passion for life that I half-wanted to be kidnapped by a passel of seedy outlaws so that he would come riding to my rescue. When Gus died, I put the book down for weeks in angry bereavement, and almost didn't forgive McMurtry. When the book itself ended, I grieved for months, and it was a good piece of time before I could break into another work of fiction with any satisfaction. I did move on to love other books, and I'll go on to love countless more. But Lonesome Dove is the book by which I will always instinctively judge others, from the standpoint of raw, visceral emotion and psychological resonance.

How the West was really won
I can understand why so many authors of westerns romanticize and distort history; it takes real talent - the kind that McMurtry possesses - to write a realistic, accurate and enthralling story. It's amazing how much I cared about Gus and Call, an inarticulate odd couple on a long cattle drive. What was it really like in the Old West? McMurtry's only agenda is to tell it like it was, and to tell it well. Dive into this fat story, and learn a lot about yourself and other people on the way.

mmm-mmm-mmm!
i have to say that eric jerome dickey out did himself AGAIN! i thought Sister Sister had it going on, but he put Friends and Lovers on another level! Shoot, i'm currently majoring in computer science, with a minor in creative writing, but i might have to switch it around! this brother was working it front to back. but on a serious note, i was really feeling the characters in this book. seeing chiquita brought back (a main character in Sister Sister), although i was unhappy with her choice of relationship, was good. but, i must say that shelby reminded me a lot of myself; her whole attitude, and persona towards men and life had me rolling throughout the book. and debra reminded me of one of my close friends, with her down to earth, motherly type vibe, her and leonard made a really cute couple. all in all, it was really sad how the book ended, but then again, that's just how life is sometimes, which only added to the element of keeping the story real and believable. i learned that you just can't stop true, meant-to-be-together love, and that sometimes, love is the only thing that keeps you sane on an otherwise bad day. pick this book up and support an outstanding african-american author. you won't be sorry, you'll be hooked on every last word, yet again, i guarantee it!

A funny, romantic, love story!
(originally posted September 6, 1998)

Once again, Eric Jerome Dickey has restored my faith in the unity of friendships and relationships. He creatively projects positive, realistic images in Tyree, Debra, Shelby and Leonard that are hardly ever seen or heard of in the media. Dickey discusses strong friendships and carefully unfolds how the duos inevitably become lovers.

After a while, you may think you're watching a soap opera. Then you realize these are not characters or actors. They are real people - perhaps your friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers who have shared intimate secrets with you. The novel is told from each persons heart with such a style that forces you to take breaks just to digest their innermost feelings. Friends and Lovers grips at your heart strings and delicately ties them in a lovely bow.

This heart-warming love story is also sensuous, without the vulgarity portrayed in some novels and movies designed to hold the audience. Mr. Dickey gently holds the reader's attention and emotions as he meticulously imparts love, laughter, anger and other emotions that naturally arise in a relationship. THE PASSION OF CHAPTER 12 IS SO SWEET AND HOT; IT WILL MAKE YOU WANNA HOLLER (FOR REAL)! Just get a fan and a tall glass of ice water or tea - whichever will help restore your blood pressure to a normal rate!

This is definitely a must read!

Beautifully Written!!!
I loved this book!! I fell in love with Leonard and was so happy for Deborah. I don't want to give to much of the story, but this is a wonderful book.

Screwtape Letters

Authors: C. S. Lewis and John Cleese
Amazon base price: $16.78
Buy one from zShops for: $48.00
Who among us has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? C.S. Lewis dispels all doubts. In The Screwtape Letters, one of his bestselling works, we are made privy to the instructional correspondence between a senior demon, Screwtape, and his wannabe diabolical nephew Wormwood. As mentor, Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the finer points, tempting his "patient" away from God.

Each letter is a masterpiece of reverse theology, giving the reader an inside look at the thinking and means of temptation. Tempters, according to Lewis, have two motives: the first is fear of punishment, the second a hunger to consume or dominate other beings. On the other hand, the goal of the Creator is to woo us unto himself or to transform us through his love from "tools into servants and servants into sons." It is the dichotomy between being consumed and subsumed completely into another's identity or being liberated to be utterly ourselves that Lewis explores with his razor-sharp insight and wit.

The most brilliant feature of The Screwtape Letters may be likening hell to a bureaucracy in which "everyone is perpetually concerned about his own dignity and advancement, where everyone has a grievance, and where everyone lives the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance, and resentment." We all understand bureaucracies, be it the Department of Motor Vehicles, the IRS, or one of our own making. So we each understand the temptations that slowly lure us into hell. If you've never read Lewis, The Screwtape Letters is a great place to start. And if you know Lewis, but haven't read this, you've missed one of his core writings. --Patricia Klein

C. S. Lewis at his best...
One of the best, and most influential, Christian authors of any time, C. S. Lewis's "The Screwtape Letters" is a compelling, and chilling, fictional look at what goes on behind our back in the demonic spirit world.

Screwtape, an upper level demonic spirit, often writes his subordinate, Wormwood, a demonic spirit assigned to misguide and misdirect a human on earth. The letters explain to Wormwood how he would best accomplish his mission of keeping the human our of the Enemy's (God's) hands and ensure that when he dies he goes straight to blazes.

What is most chilling about "The Screwtape Letters" is that, even after all of these years, how much a person can see of themselves in them. Letter after letter seemed to be talking about me directly. Time and time again I saw one demonic trap after another I had fallen into being explained in a letter.

I have to caution you, however. This book is not an easy read. C. S. Lewis did not attempt to write a book that everybody could understand. You will probably have to spend some time re-reading many letters and looking up words in your dictionary and/or concordance for a better understanding of what is being said. This can become quite frustrating, but when you are able to break through and understand a letter you will be able to see how it can apply to your own life.

If you were ever interested in getting a better understanding of how the Enemy and his demonic spirits work, this is a great book to do it with. But be warned: you will learn something about yourself in the process.

A review of "The Screwtape Letters" By: C.S. Lewis
"The Screwtape Letters" is the absolute best book I have ever read. It is a very well written book. It really makes you think. C.S. Lewis' style is exquisite. He paints with words as an artist paints with pictures and a musician with notes and rhythms. While still being the best book I have ever read, it is also one of the strangest. Screwtape, an experienced devil, teaches his nephew, Wormwood, how to win a soul over from the so-called "Enemy", who is the Lord Jesus Christ. While he is doing this, he teaches the reader about the techniques that Satan uses to distract Christians away from God. Therefore, he is teaching us how to live better Christian lives and avoid giving in to temptations. He shows us through the example of his nephew, Wormwood, trying to win over a particular Englishmen. He tries to make him think that what he is doing is not sin. Even though, in the end, the man is not won over, we see how so many people go astray without even realizing it. This is an excellent book and I would reccomend it to anyone looking for a challenging book to read.

A book that every Christian should read
His Abysmal Sublimity Under-Secretary Screwtape is an old experienced tempter, a highly respected expert in his field. And so, Screwtape takes time out of his hellishly busy schedule to send letters of advice to his nephew, Wormwood, who is shepherding along his first human. This book is a collection of Screwtape's letters, giving sound advice on how a Christian can be steered away from Heaven, and safely delivered to Hell. Along the way, the reader is treated to some of the most profound Christian reasoning that I have ever read!

To put it succinctly, this book is without a doubt one the greatest (if not THE greatest) works of practical Christian living that was ever written. C.S. Lewis's use of a demon giving advice to his nephew is simply inspired, allowing him to mix deep theology and reasoning with upbeat (and offbeat) humor. I loved the book, and I love this audio version of it - John Cleese does an excellent job of playing Screwtape, adding in the emotions the role deserves, and now I can't even imagine anyone else doing it.

This is a great book, one that every Christian should read (or listen to) at least once in his or her life, and maybe even read on a regular basis. I've listened to it five times in a row, and want to hear it some more. This is practical Christianity!

Anne of Green Gables
Published in Audio Cassette by Dove Books Audio (June, 1998)
Authors: Melissa Gilbert and Lucy Maud Montgomery
Amazon base price: $20.00
When Marilla Cuthbert's brother, Matthew, returns home to Green Gables with a chatty redheaded orphan girl, Marilla exclaims, "But we asked for a boy. We have no use for a girl." It's not long, though, before the Cuthberts can't imagine how they could ever do without young Anne of Green Gables--but not for the original reasons they sought an orphan. Somewhere between the time Anne "confesses" to losing Marilla's amethyst pin (which she never took) in hopes of being allowed to go to a picnic, and when Anne accidentally dyes her hated carrot-red hair green, Marilla says to Matthew, "One thing's for certain, no house that Anne's in will ever be dull." And no book that she's in will be, either. This adapted version of the classic, Anne of Green Gables, introduces younger readers to the irrepressible heroine of L.M. Montgomery's many stories. Adapter M.C. Helldorfer includes only a few of Anne's mirthful and poignant adventures, yet manages to capture the freshness of one of children's literature's spunkiest, most beloved characters. There's just enough to make beginning readers want more--luckily, there's a lot more in the originals! Illustrator Ellen Beier creates vibrant pictures to portray the beauty of the land around Green Gables and the spirited nature of Anne herself. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

The best book in the world!
I totally LOVE this book! This is one of my favorite books in the whole world by my absolute FAVORITE author, L.M. Montgomery. Anne Shirley, the delightful, talkative orphan that Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert adopt, is an extraordinary character. She's so full of life that you just can't help loving her. L.M. Montgomery paints a wonderful picture of the small town of Avonlea, in Prince Edward Island, Canada, where the story is set. As Anne gets older and more mature, she also gets wiser and more loving - and lovable. I've read this book at least three times, and it is still one of my absolute favorites. Even though this is classified as a "children's book," adults will love it too, I know. I read it first when I was 9 or 10 years old, then again when I was about 12, and again, just recently (I'm only 14 now). I also think that it would be a wonderful book for moms and dads to read to their children, no matter how old or young they were.

A memorable classic that touches your heart!
This is one of the best books ever written and the credit goes to spirited Anne (make sure it's spelled with an "e"!) Shirley. It's not often you find such a charming heroine as Anne. ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is the first of a series on this lovable orphan, and it begins with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a respectable brother and sister, living at Green Gables. They are both growing old and need a boy to help out on the farm. But they got a talkative redhead girl instead. Before they can send her back to the orphanage, Anne has managed to win the hearts of Prince Edward Island with her wit and imagination. She seems to affect everyone around her - from busybody Mrs. Rachel Lynde to handsome Gilbert Blythe. And now, Green Gables will never be the same! . . .

It's not often you find such a spirited and lovable heroine as Anne. Captivating and captivatED, Anne is full of enthusiasm and fun, which gets her into all sorts of scrapes. This book is one that you are guaranteed to laugh over, cry over, and never want to put down! It is an ideal novel that you won't want to pass up! (Even if you don't read the rest of the Anne books, read this!)

Review of Anne of Green Gables
'People who haven't red hair don't know what trouble is. Mrs. Thomas told me that God made my hair red on purpose, and I've never cared about Him since.'

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Upon arriving at the Cuthbert's home on Prince Edward Island, Anne Shirley, a vivacious and imaginative young orphan girl, was devastated to hear that she was a mistake. The Cuthbert's had wanted a boy. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, an elderly brother and sister, decide to keep her, and from that moment nothing is the same.
Cracking a slate across a boy's head, getting her best friend drunk (accidentally of course), saving a baby's life, and nearly drowning herself are all part of Anne's daily life. Marilla and the neighbors couldn't help but express their disappointment with the little newcomer'at first. To most she knows, Anne becomes an irreplaceable addition to sleepy Avonlea. Anne is changing too. Gradually she becomes more mature and learns to control her sometimes fiery temper.
Anne of Green Gables is unpredictable and hilarious; you can never tell what Anne will do next! I loved her endless questions about the world, and her passionate love of life. Anne Shirley is one of the most enjoyable characters I have ever read about, therefore, I would recommend this book to anyone.

The Godfather
Published in Audio CD by B & B Audio Inc (September, 2002)
Author: Mario Puzo
Amazon base price: $27.97

The story of Don Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia family, inspired some of the most successful movies ever. It is in Mario Puzo's The Godfather that Corleone first appears. As Corleone's desperate struggle to control the Mafia underworld unfolds, so does the story of his family. The novel is full of exquisitely detailed characters who, despite leading unconventional lifestyles within a notorious crime family, experience the triumphs and failures of the human condition. Filled with the requisite valor, love, and rancor of a great epic, The Godfather is the definitive gangster novel.

The Godfather of All Books
The Godfather by Mario Puzo is about an Italian Mafia family, the Corleones, who live in New York, and it gives an inside look at how the Mafia runs. The many characters include Don Vito Corleone, the Godfather, and his three sons, Santino, Fredo, and Michael. The first main event happens when a man by the name of Virgil Sollozzo enters Don's office and asks if Don would help him import drugs into the United States. Don rejects saying that even though the profits from drugs are high, so are the risks. A couple days later, when Don is getting into his car, he is shot by two men. Even though he is severely wounded he is not killed and Santino is forced to take over the business. I won't give away the rest of the book, but I will tell you it kept me on the edge of my seat. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys nonstop action in the novels they read. I found Mario Puzo's writing style to be very good with lots of unexpected twists and turns. This helped make the book very exciting. I also recommend it to anyone interested in the Mafia. This book provides an inside look about how the Mafia is run. Overall, I enjoyed this book very much.

A Read You Can't Refuse!!!
Not many works of fiction can claim to have significantly changed the face of American culture; Mario Puzo's classic novel The Godfather is surely one of those. Look at the evidence: This book (and the wonderful cinematic counterpart) reintroduced the gangster as an American icon. It helped to spawn entire new genres in fiction and films. (Some critics suggest there should be an entirely new designation for this genre and have dubbed it "The Eastern".) Of course, it introduced that classic catchphrase "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse." Finally, it introduced one of the great heroic criminals into literature in the person of Don Vito Corleone (a character reportedly based on Puzo's own mother). Yes, it is true that the movie and not the novel must take much of this credit, but this work is hardly the two-star pulp trash that a few misguided critics have made it to be. It's solid all the way through, particularly the fabulous portrayals of the ruthless gentleman Don Vito and his family, epecially the sons: hotheaded Sonny (whose penchant for needless violence proves fatal), cowardly Freddie (who is spooked by the Don's near-assasination and runs away to Las Vegas), and, most memorably, cool, reserved Michael (who, in the end, proves a tactical genius truly worthy to be called his father's son.) Also, don't forget the fabulous cast of supporting characters: singers Johnny Fontaine and Nino Valenti (read: Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin), and the many minor players such as Luca Brasi and Amerigo Bonserai, who literally owe their very existence to the Don's generosity. And the women!!! Such marvels of strength, tenacity and character presented in blindly obidient Connie, questioning Kay, and the Don's own wife, who knows much more than she reveals. Her tutoring of Kay into the Sicilian way of life ends the book on a high note. Puzo makes these character studies work because he gives each person his own little spotlight; by chapter's end, you know why each one has chosen to become a family member or confidant. The chapters showing the Don's rise to power, subsequent fall, and rebirth are the highpoints of the book, as the newer, more ruthless families seek to destroy the Corleone's sacred honor by forcing them into trafficking drugs. Yes, in the end, it is Michael who prevails, but the action is so good that the climax is not spoiled by knowing the outcome in advance. The reader will want to visit this novel time and again for it's unique perspectives on honor, justice, and The American Dream.

Classic Read
I saw the movies before I read the book and this made me even more anxious to read it and see what was different and if any of Part II was included in the book. I'm not really big on reading so it takes a lot to keep me interested. And Puzo did just that. I read this book in about 4 days. You would think that it would be hard for me to read since I already knew what was gonna happen. But that just shows what a great job Puzo did in writing this book. If you like to read or just like things involving the Mafia or organized crime then this is a must have for you. Great book, best one I have ever read! This makes me want to read every other Mario Puzo book and thats what Im gonna do!

Love and communication
Let me begin by saying that my mate and I are both well at ease with our own and each other's established love language styles. Of course it's difficult to place all the complexities of a person's "relationship style" completely within one of the five love languages cited in this book (quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, and physical touch), but, using these five as a general guideline, my dominant love language is "physical touch", while my mate's is "acts of service". Our relationship functions reasonably well on this basis; if my mate starts moving out of her assigned love language style, as she is sometimes prone to do, I'm usually fairly quick to make sure she gets back into it.
However, despite being quite aware and mostly accepting of our respective love language styles, as recommended in this book, I sometimes suspect that this is not the full picture, and there is perhaps still something missing in our relationship in terms of communication. I'm not sure if perhaps there's something missing from my partner's copy of the book, and she's not fully grasping the issues? Her Spanish edition does seem to have fewer pages than my English copy...

A relationship saver every couple should read.
How many times have you heard a wife exclaim, "I cook and clean for that man, and he never appreciates all that I do for him. I'm so unhappy" or the husband grouse, "Hey, I bought her those diamond earrings. I even get her flowers just to show her how much I love her, and she just throws them back in my face saying that I am just trying to buy her love. She keeps carping that I never share my feelings. She just doesn't know love when she sees it."

If one partner can speak only Russian and the other only Spanish, is it any wonder that there are communication problems. What is obvious in spoken languages isn't so obvious in love languages. The problem with love language is that the one partner thinks the other is just speaking very poor Russian while the other thinks their partner's Spanish is just terrible. This book is that very important eye opener that every couple should read. It will get them on the road to speaking each others natural language.

And they should read it at the beginning of their relationship rather than as a last ditch effort to save it. I give this book as a wedding present to all my friends that get married. There is no better way to help them get a long and happy marriage started.

If You Are Married, You Have Got To Read This!
With communication being the number one factor in making relationship work, this is a must read for both spouses. Chapman hits the "nail on the head" as he uncovers the five languages of love: Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch

Chapman clearly explains each language in a five chapters. Along the way, he includes experiences from real-life couples. After uncovering each language, Chapman uses the next couple of chapters to help the reader discover his or her own love language as well as the spouse's.

Whether you are newlyweds or have been married for years, this book is highly recommended above any other book on marriage. More than likely, a reader will discover they have misunderstood a mate because they were using the wrong language! I'm seeing my mate in completely different light now. :)
