The Wiseguy Cookbook
When you grow up with an Italian mom who cooks dishes that nobody else has ever heard of you wonder if you are the only person that has tasted such amazing dishes. Well I don't wonder anymore. The recipes are wonderful. I grew up cooking most of the dishes written about in this book and must say Henry's recipes taste just like "mom's" - in fact just a bit better.... I think this book is extremely well written not only for the "advanced" cook but also for the "novice" cook as I bought a copy for my son and he now uses it to prepare dinner for his family. If you want to cook real "Italian" food - this is your book.

Thanks, Henry
When the rumors began flying about this book I laughed. What! Now this guy is doing a cookbook! I was intrigued. I received the book today, read it from cover to cover and made garbanzo bean salad and grilled eggplant, hey, pretty damn good! I plan a trip to the grocery store tomorrow for ingredients of fresh herbs a few spices and such to try out more recipes, will surprise the husband....."men love variety".
This book flows naturally, the stories introducing the recipes, the rules, tips and advice all flow very well. It's an easy and entertaining read. Definitely will play around with these recipes for a long time. There are recipes for the beginner to the more serious and experienced house chef.
Henry Hill is a great storyteller, honest and sincere, this quality really shines in this book. Forget the wiseguy and goodfella aspects of Henry Hill for a second, read between the lines and you'll find that he shares a part of himself that is really close to his heart, his love of cooking, the recipes and what it all means to him. I'm sure many can relate. I recommend this cookbook, not as a novelty but as a real collection of authentic Italian recipes,in addition to some old all American favorites. It's impressive.

I love this cookbook!!
I finally have learned how to cook since I purchased this cookbook!! The helpful hints Henry gives about how to make the
dishes are awesome! I have never eaten or cooked so well! The
stories behind the recipes are fun and interesting reading! Love
you Henry!!

Courage to Run: A Story Based on the Life of Harriet Tubman (Daughters of the Faith)

Overcoming Overwhelming Obstacles
I've always been fascinated with every aspect of Harriet Tubman's life, but especially her childhood. How could someone with such spunk and independence endure her years as a slave? Wendy Lawton answers that question, and many more. She makes Harriet three-dimensional, and her faith in God fresh and understandable. Other "background" people of Harriet's life are richly described also--her parents, fellow-slave Annie, and the two unhappy women who hired her temporarily from her owner. Anyone who wants to know about Harriet Tubman should start with this book.

An inspiring book written with great insight and talent
It's hard to believe that Wendy Lawton had not published dozens of books before Courage to Run. Her attention to research and detail, coupled with her easy-to-read style, kept me turning the pages until the book was done. I hope this is the first of many books because we need books that introduce our children, and re-introduce adults, to historical figures of faith.

Wendy Lawton was courageous to write a book using so much dialect, because that is more difficult than most people realize. She did a skillful job of bringing her characters to life with not only dialect, but with word choices and flow. All slave owners weren't on the same economic or social level, and Wendy did a wonderful job of allowing me to know who was talking and more about their character. She did a great job of giving every person in the book their own voice and she painted vivid pictures.

With the richness of description, she masterfully made me feel "Minty's" pain and confusion and faith. We often think of our inspirational heros, and Harriet Tubman is certainly that, as being made from stronger stuff than we. In Courage To Run we see a young girl who doubts her courage but never her God. Harriet Tubman was courageous and her story is inspiring. Adults can learn as much, or maybe even more, than young people from this wonderful book.

Harriet Tubman from a different perspective
I don't remember seeing or reading a book on Harriet Tubman as a child. Wendy Lawton's account of Harriet Tubman's childhood life was very realistic to me. I could visualize the deplorable conditions of the slave quarters as well as the less than nice slave owners. The book is easy reading and peeked my interest right from the start. Well worth the reading.

Out of My Mind: Drug Runs, Trivial Losses & the Great Mandala: Essays on Contemporary Culture
Published in Paperback by D'Anca-Wells & Associates (01 October, 2002)
Author: Jonathan Dobrer
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $9.99
Average review score:

Engaging, entertaining and educating
Jonathan Dobrer's newest collection of essays showcases his gift for extremely engaging, often humerous and always thought-provoking writing. Who can resist delving into an essay that seems to be a confession of a crime "I just got back from making a drug run to Mexico."? It's not a confession nor a crime--but I leave it to the next lucky reader to discover the truth! His essays explore and address seemingly insurmountable social concern; separation of church and state, Sept. 11, the situation in the middle east, corporate fraud, immigration, racism, and national security. And whether or not you may agree with his observations, these essays will make you think and rethink your own observations. These are essays born to spark lively group discussion. The essays here also show Jonathan Dobrer's strong ability to write deeply moving essays such as the one on the death of Daniel Pearl, delightful whimsical pieces such as "Murder Most Vowel" and local interest pieces such as "Irony-Free in Anaheim" that address the issue of immigration in an intelligent, straight-forward manner done so well it could apply to any community in the U.S. This book is a delight to read, talk about, and read again. I look forward to Jonathan Dobrer's next collection!

Out of My Mind: Drug Runs, Trivial Losses & the Great Mandal
Jonathon Dobrer has an irreverent method of cutting to the heart of common and frequent misconceptions and misleading information. His way of playing devil's advocate while imparting knowledge to the reader is unique. He asks questions (most of us would like to ask but are too shy) and provides "dumb" answers--exactly what the average person gets when dealing with companies and their policies. This book is funny and thought provoking at the same time. I couldn't wait to read the next chapter and am looking forward to his next sojourn into the literary forest.

Oh man, is this guy funny!
serious; funny; --> seriously funny.
so funny, i couldn't put it down.
seriously.

The Runner's Handbook by Glover
This book is excellent for the beginning and intermediate level
runner. Running can be difficult for sedentary people. This work
teachers you that walking is an important prelude to running.
The authors develop a methodology for running and goal-setting.
They cover some important dietary changes; such as, eliminating
junk food and drinking large quantities of water during lengthy
exercise sessions. The work teaches how to purchase a good
running shoe. In addition, the authors provide comparative
blood pressure monitoring statistics for each age group.
The book even contains a chapter on running for the disabled.
Finally, the work develops a list of a dozen or so concerns
for all runners i.e. flexibility, weakness in postural muscles,
structural weaknesses in the musculoskeletal system, uneven
footstrike, impact strike, poor sleeping habits, sciatica,
tension and disc problems-just to mention a few. In addition,
the work covers basic stretching exercises to enhance

flexibility during " the run" . The book is a worthy
investment for anyone planning a long-term running program.
This work will ensure that your efforts are incrementally
paced to avoid unnecessary injuries.

recommended for every runner
... However, I laughed today when I saw the "sell this book" button on this page and thought to myself NEVER. This and the competitive runners guide (start with this one unless you are definitely ready to start racing and run regularly already) are books that I take everywhere with me. I hardly have time for novels anymore between my running and my rereading of these two books and I've never been happier ....

I was until December a consummate couch potato and now I'm running in the New York City Marathon this coming November and I owe it all to Bob and Shelly-Lynne Glover and these books. I don't need to go further as all you have to do is read nigel's review from London and you have my experience with these books.

Oh, I do want to say one thing although it was mentioned in another review as well. I think the reason most people try and give up running and say it isn't for them is that they go out and try to run 2 miles or 20 minutes or something that seems reasonable to them, but really isn't. Take it gradually as the book advices and you will love running and avoid the aches, pains, disappointments, and difficulties that others run into or you may have before in your life.

Don't bother with any of the other running books. This is the one you want.

I went from 0 km to a Half-Marathon with this book
I was one of those persons that just couldn't run. If I ran for more than 3 minutes I would be out of breath so fast that you wouldn't believe it. Then, one day I decided that it wasn't normal to just run out of breath after a short run. Looking to learn from someone who would know what they were talking about, I searched Amazon for books on running, and ended up selecting this one. The book is very good, well written, and straight forward. To make a long story short, on March the 28th I ran my fist Half-marathon in 2:20:07. For me it is an absolute milestone in my life. All I can do is give credit to this book for it helped a lot. Thanks Bob Glover.

Leo's adventures in running away from the Nazis.
As the other reviewers have already stated, this is an action packed adventure of a young man fleeing the Nazis. Leo fled from his native Vienna, to Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, France, and Switzerland. In this book, he describes the Austrians as welcome participants in the Holocaust and not as the victims. Austrians treat themselves as the first victims of Hitler's aggression rather than the willing helpers of Hitler. As he fled, other nations tried to avoid Hitler's refugees. No one welcomed the outcasts from the Hitler regime.
One comment about the nature of this book. Most of the victims did not know what was going to happen when they embarked on the train journey to the camps. Leo states it in the narrative. I don't think even he knew, other than the future was bleak. It lessens the story narrative as he pictures the death that awaits these people. This should have been told at the end.
This is a great book to read. It shows the suffering of the Jews and those who opposed Hitler.

This Thriller is one man's Real Life Story
A fantastic story told by the man for whom it was a reality Leo Bretholz set out to write a book, not because he is a bookwriter, but because he has a story to tell. His childhood in Vienna, living the holocaust as a life event, loss, danger and the exhileration of escape and survival unfold with the suspense one usually expects from a fictional thriller. The thing that makes this book important it that it is the truth. Highly recommended for those interested in this period of history, and equally as a good read for for everybody.

This book was incredible
I just finished this book, I coulnt beleive the outcome of it.It was so shocking to hear all of this. I couldn't put it down. Im very interested in the Holocaust, even though im not a surviver, but it is so interesting on how people were back in WWII, it amazes me that people had to go through all of this..I would diffently reccommend this. Thanks to Leo and Michael, to share such a tragic story and a big and unhumian peice of your life, a peice of history..Best Wishes

OMG, I can't believe it's been this long since IA aired! It's been a little less than a year since I bought the books and grrr! Hey, Christie, if you ever come back here to read reviews, it would be much appreciated if you had the assignment to write more! Any fan of the show *has* to have this book. I was no less than estatic when it arrived and I after I started reading it, well...Let's just say I wouldn't have even noticed if the house caught on fire. ;) Ooohhh, I wish there was more, be it the rest of the novelization, or sort of a continued prequel. You know, like the time gap between them leaving the Rez and heading for Glenport or basically anything that hasn't already been covered.

Oh~ Yeah!
Finally, A prequel worthy of the original! I loved it! Thanx to all those out there who are trying to save IA! Just one question...is there a next book coming out? and when????

Why Jaran!?!?
The Book was extremely exciting...at last I have the courage to say, I finished it. It was great, but what bummed me the most was that for those of you who read, well you know about Jaran. But I guess that's how the stories go....kinda like a Saving Private Ryan book...

Running From Justice: A Tale of Fugitives on the Run

Review of Fugitives on the Run
I truly enjoyed reading this fast-moving, rapid-paced novella. I can't wait to read the next book. The author writes with real enthusiasm and his descriptions help you to visualize the characters. Definitely a one-nighter! Can't put it down until you have completed the book!

Running From Justice: A Tale of Fugitives on the Run
Chain-smoking Sheppard Earl owns a bail-bond company. Business was good in Baltimore, Maryland before the 9/11/01 tragedies. Now, with crime down and too many "skips", the bail-bondsman is almost bankrupt. Middle-aged and married, with two children, Shep is concerned about his financial future, while his wife, Marie,
is concerned for his safety.

Best friend, Terrance (Terry) Jones, is Shep's main hope for keeping business open and bankruptcy at bay. Terry is six-foot-six, weighs 285 pounds, and carries a Glock-17 semi-automatic
pistol. As a modern-day bounty hunter, Terry is the last thing any bail-jumping criminal wants to encounter. Terry, too, is middle-aged and married, with a couple of kids, and facing
financial hardship.

Between the two friends, tips and clues lead one or the other to locate runaway fugitives, keeping both men in business and providing income to support their families. But family relationships are strained, as the work is dangerous and requires odd and long hours away from home. Meeting the demands of work and family
responsibilities proves more of a challenge than either man ever
realized.

Peter G. Engelman digs deep into the lives of his characters, drawing out past and present experiences, and future hopes and concerns. He gives an insider's view of what it actually must be like to be a bail-bondsman or a bounty hunter. Mr. Engelman also gives glimpses of fugitive lives and provides realistic court proceedings of a bail client's defense.

Although the pace is slow, as narration is heavy and some author intrusion apparent, RUNNING FROM JUSTICE is a believable drama. I recommend RUNNING FROM JUSTICE for people who seek more character background, emotional depth and problem solving in a book, rather than fast-paced action from beginning to end.

Fugitives On The Run
Peter Engelman does a fine job of giving us insight into a world that most of us (hopefully) have little contact with. The book is an enjoyable, fast read. I would have preferred a full novel length...perhaps next time.

Dragonflight (Canadian Dummy #) - Dr Price Promotion Ized Run-On): #1

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
... I started out with thte harperhall trilogy and i found that AMAZING! Her style is just so good, she keeps the chapters flowing nicely into each other. And romance laced with the excitement! I spent the whole day reading Dragonsong! Well, I got hooked!

I had final exams and couldn't read as much but I finished the rest of the HarperHall trilogy right after. I started the dragonriders of pern series and Dragonflight was just plain good!

The book is about Lessa who had to hide and pretend to be a drudge when her family was murdered by Fax, a ambitious man who controlled seven holds. She came out of hiding to announce her birthright to Ruatha Hold. But she met F'lar who told her she could be a dragonrider. Thus begins a plot of romance (with F'lar of course!) and saving all of Pern. Yes, I love romance!

I have finished the next two books, Dragonquest and The White Dragon. They too are marvelous books and I plan to get those three for Christmas. They too are great with of romance (F'nor and Brekke, Jaxom and Sharra) and excitement.I have a goal to finish the rest of the Dragonriders trilogy.

I never really had a favorite author but now I can for certain say that Anne McCaffery is my favorite author! But I still don't have a favorite book yet because..... There's too many Dragonrider of Pern books to pick from!

I really hope more people will read this book...

Dragonflight
I only got acquainted with Anne McCaffrey this year, I am affraid. My first book by this author wasn't even related in any way with the Chronicles of Pern but it introduced me to an author who has now become one of my favorites. I had heard of these series of books and heard people talking of them. Living in Portugal as I do, you cannot find books as well as you can in the United States or in England, for example, and I had to read this series in English, which I did not mind at all. But it took a lot of searching...

The fact is, it was worth it. In no time I had become an addict to this author's works and when I first read Dragonflight, I was hooked on the marvellous world Pern was and the amazing relationship between man and dragon, a relationship based on love and trust... and necessity. This is an amazing introduction to a world and a society brought to us by the imaginative mind of Anne McCaffrey.

Lessa is of the Ruatha Blood and when her Hold is conquered by the greedy High Reaches Holder Fax, she sweares vengeance. Working as a drudge, plotting the death of Fax, with a watch wher as her only friend, she grows up for ten Turns with the thought of regaining her Hold from Fax's hands. During the Dragonriders of Pern Search, she sees the opportunity to get rid, once and for all, of Fax. But instead of becoming Holder of Ruatha, she is given the choice of becoming Weyrwoman in the only Weyr left. The Dragonmen of Pern are sworn to fight Thread, the threat which plagues the wonderful world of Pern, a threat long forgotten as it has not returned. But the pass of the Red Star promises the return of the Thread, even if only F'lar, rider of Bronze Mnementh, believes the time has come. In the Weyr a last Golden Egg of a Queen lies, awaiting hatching, when Impression will be made (the total empathic connection between man and dragon), awaiting a Weyrwoman to take the place of the old and a new Queen to reborn the Dragonrider's of Pern who will need all their courage and strength to fight for the future of their world. Will Lessa and F'lar succeed when the Dragonriders have fallen into disgrace to the eyes of the Holders? When a threat is no longer perceived as existent, how can one hope to protect themselves? When hope is lost... there is a spark that will brighten and bring hope back... a spark in the hands of the Dragonriders of Pern...

I highly recommend this book, the first of a worldwilde cult of the amazing chronicles of the Dragonriders of Pern.

A must read book!
Elves shooting bows, dwarves built like solid stone, and wizards enchanting little creatures with magical spells. Doesn't all that fantasy stuff get kind of boring after awhile? Lord of the Rings, Dragonlance, Sword of Shannarah, and many others are all the same, just with different names in different places doing different things. For the first time, I have finally read a fantasy novel that is different. With unimaginable imagination, author Anne McCaffrey creates a whole world of fantasy very different from the traditional styles. With realistic descriptions, complicated twists in plots, and a great, drawing style of writing, the author takes you on a journey you'd never thought existed. With the idea of dragons and humans as the main figment of fantasy in this novel, Anne McCaffrey combines just enough modern day sci-fi with medieval fantasy to create one great novel. Combining the ideas of dragons with a modern world where planets orbiting each other cause dangers, the author creates a magical world you would've thought had never existed. Not giving too much at a time, the author slowly draws you in and slowly, things become more and more clear as you near the end of the book. Many a time I have had to slap my head and say, "Geez! How come I never thought of that?" The complicated plot makes it hard for readers to guess the story and not get any delight out of reading it and being surprised by the answers they find to the plots. Though the book has a rather weak introduction and takes a while for the reader to get completely drawn into the world of Pern and it's dragons, it doesn't take long before you are unable to put the book down again. The suspense that the author creates at the climax of this book is amazing. I read for 5 straight hours through the climax because it was simply too fantastic to put down. I just HAD to know what happened next. Like an addiction, the book just draws you back and back like a magical spell was cast on you. Anne McCaffrey makes it seem so realistic that it's as if I was there throughout this whole adventure! After reading this book, I can't stop daydreaming day after day what a life on Pern with dragons would be like!

Simply Amazing
I am not going to go over the contents of the book, or much about Charles Bukowski, because if you are considering this book you must know something about the man and his work. I will just give you my impression of this collection of work.
No collection can ever really be complete, there are always new things to add, new commentary, newly discovered works, transcripts of records and unpublished letters, but this book does an excellent job in its attempt.
To me Charles Bukowski will always be one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century, because of the sheer brutality and honesty his work emanates. It is funny, sad, sadistic, cruel, scathing, enlightening and thought provoking. Everything I like to read. This is poetry for people who are disgusted by verse of flowers, trees and Greek mythology. This is RAW human emotion and experience smeared out onto paper. It is not perfect, and it is not trying to be. It doesn't always work, but there in lies the subtle beauty of Bukowski's efforts. the guts to try. The attempts at honesty, clearly blocked by his unwillingness to divulge everything, and his cynicism of man.
This collection is shocking in its beauty, and inspiring by its simplicity. Enjoy.

A voice from the other side
To a kid growing up in a small town in Norway, Bukowski was definitely a voice from another reality. In many ways, his prose and poetry showed that the bums and the lowlifes - in other words; the hunted - actually had a voice, and a strong one at that... The greatness of Bukowski lies in his ability to tell extremely complex stories in a straightforward, deceptively simple language and style. The poetry is also very sharp and precise. Whatever the man did to himself with regard to drink and drugs; it never took away a smattering of his ability to observe the human predicament in all its glory - or terror, depending on whom you might ask... This 'reader' is a good place to start for anybody who would like to get acquainted with Bukowski's work. It contains poems and stories that stay on the reader's mind for a long time. The writings are also a reminder that no matter how hard a person might believe in the American dream, the dream doesn't work for everybody.

For Bukowski addicts!
This recording is a MUST for all those, like myself, who regard Bukowski as the one true voice of the fringe-dwelling dispossesed. People focus on his hard-drinking, his 'bum-like' persona, but what makes him remarkable is how his fiction and poetry reflects REALITY: the 'failure' and humiliation of being an artist (and essentially voiceless) in America. I listened to this recording with friends -- and we all agreed that it captures the man.

Possibly the greatest authors and stories I ever read!
I have never read a series so full of heart as this. The characters are vibrant and alive, funny and real in their emotions. Any thing I write is a pathetic reflection of how truly great these writers are. How can I even begin to say what an impact the Galway Chronicles have had on my life? This is the most perfect Christmas story I have ever read. Just read the book and you'll be hooked too! Incredible!

CAN'T WAIT TO READ BOOK TWO!
What a novel! It has everything! Love, great conflict, good vs. evil! The Thoenes have done it again! Not to mention the fact that now the whole family is writing! I just read Heart of Allegience, the latest novel by Jake and Luke Thoene, and I have to say that the sons write every bit as powerfully as their famous parents! The torch of great historical fiction has been passed to the next generation! Congrats to the Thoenes on their great novels in the Galway Chronicles and big congratulations on two sons who write so beautifully! I'm reading the books by Jake and Luke and passing their Baker Street and Last Chance Detectives kids books on to my kids. Keep it up!What we have found in our house is that the Thoene name means good, exciting, meaningful fiction.I'm reading all the Thoenes!

Different Setting, Same Great Writing
When Joseph Connor Burke returned to the small Irish village of Ballynockanor, he only expected to stay a few months. Just long enough to put the past and his stolen inheritance behind him. But as he gets reacquainted with his neighbors, he finds himself drawn into their struggles against Protestants in general and his uncle in particular. Is there a way to reclaim what is rightfully his? Is the priesthood his true calling? And what about his feelings for Kate?

The Thoenes went in an unexpected direction when they started this series. Up til now, they'd been writing about Israel and America. For that reason, I've put off starting this series, even though I've heard such good thing about it. Boy, was that a mistake!

I know very little about Irish history. In this one book, I learned so much that helps me understand the current struggles. Yet, as always, the history is wrapped in a wonderful story with very real characters. While I figured a few things out before they happened, most of the time I was unsure what would happen next and had a hard time putting the book down as a result. As always, the Thoenes develop their characters well and I felt myself getting angry on their behalf on more then one occasion.

I'm already planning my next trip to Ballynockanor for the next chapter in this sage. Any fan of the Thoenes or anyone wanting some fictitious background on Ireland will love this book.
