Stirs the Yoeman farmer in each of us!
This is a delightful work. The writing is superb. It is a quick read, too quick. I wish it went on for several hundred pages more. It is one of those books that once you finish it the next book you read seems flat and dull. It is about a year he spent on his farm in Maine. It is filled with wonderful, arftul, inciteful, descriptive glimpses into this world and humanity. It stirs the soul and has a way of making one want to go right outside and plant something. A great read for anyone who likes nature or great writing in general.

This is a wonderful collection of short 1-2 page writings on many different topics in life. Love, time, how to live with passion for life, friendship, history, you name it. The writings are so eloquent and thought-provoking that you could spend an afternoon talking about each one. A joy to read! Learn to be alive, not to just go on living! This book helps bring meaning to life. You can't ask for more than that.

I have read all Kok's books, and this is my favorite
For anyone who likes intrigue, photography, theology and a grand romance thrown in, this book is for you. The main characters are fresh and true. I even drooled over the descriptions of exotic foods I can't find here in my small town, USA. This book is for real. Please read it if you are a Christian who doesn't normally read the mystery/romance genre. You will be surprised.

I could feel God's presence when I read these daily.
In this book, I read about the life-changing journeys of 12 biblical characters to learn how they met the Lord, and how I can do the same. I could really feel the presence of God as I read every daily devotional, I often caught myself reading the next few days devotions, just so I could continue in my devotion time with God.

A good view of a farming life in Britian
Having watched Jacks TV serise of the same name it is great to read of the childhood behind it and perhaps to " remove the rose coloured glasses" people love to wear when they wax lyrical about the Good old days. His farming Background gives us a look at the the life of the 'Old Man' and his mother and here is a man who can really speak out on the pro's and cons of Fox hunting, and give us some happy and some sad stories to listen too

what a great idea!
This is a book whose time has come! Never before has such an interesting set of essays on American print culture been collected in one place. It was a stroke of genius to supplement it with a CD-ROM. In this way the book in itself is a testament to the amazing journeys American print culture has taken!

The editors have done a terrific job of ensuring readability and compatibility throughout the essays included here. At [money], it's not exactly a steal, but still worth every penny. Destined to become the benchmark against which all other books on the topic are measured.

A thorough historical review of early Spanish language press
Not only does this book provide a complete historical perspective, it also highlights (through quotes and themes) the social issues facing early Hispano-American settlers. Ironically, these issues continue to have present-day relevance to those impacted by cultural and societal differences.

A must have reference!
Comprehensive source for the serious researcher, based on original documents. Hundreds of photos of textiles, pattern books, commerical records, etc. Information is arranged in a dictionary format. There is a slight difficulty in matching photos with definitions, but it's worth the trouble.

Treasures on Earth (Eagle Large Print)
Published in Hardcover by Chivers North Amer (January, 1993)
Author: Jessica Stirling
Amazon base price: $23.95
Used price: $8.99
Average review score:

A fine, classic Scottish tale full of hope.
Treasures on Earth is the story of Gaddy Patterson, a woman near forty at the book's beginning who stumbles upon a dead girl wrapped around a girl baby of about 3 or 4 months of age. Having never had her own children, Gaddy claims the child as her own, causing the man that she travels with to leave her, and causing her wandering lifestyle to come to a standstill. She must stay within the parish where she found the child by Scottish law. Gaddy begins working the land of a local farmer, Coll Cochran, and soon falls in love with him, though he is married. Coll also has fallen in love with Gaddy but does nothing to encourage it until his wife begins falling into the throes of a madness borne of jealousy. She thinks she knows what goes on between Gaddy and her husband. When she dies due to her own madness, Coll and Gaddy come together and have a child, Anna, though they never marry.

This book is about Elspeth, the foundling, and Anna who grow up together to be the ! most beautiful girls in the lowlands of late 18th century/early 19th century Scotland. It is a coming of age story that ends in a completely unexpected way, Stirling's trademark.

This is a fine book for those who treasure traveling in other countries. Stirling's description of the 18th century environment and its customs is fluid and frightfully entertaining. I loved this book, the first I had read by Stirling, and for the next year or so, I will read no others until I have read all that Jessica Stirling has written.

Middle School Son Loved this Book
My middle school aged son picked this book to read for a book report. He's somewhat of a reluctant reader so it can be a challenge to find a book that really draws him in. This book did it! It's the story of a 6th grade boy, named Tyler, who is visiting an uncle who writes for a popular sitcom. Tyler feels that this is his chance to break into showbiz. The author of the book has been a television writer so I'm sure it's an accurate description of life behind the scenes.
