Mrs. Ike: Memories and Reflections on the Life of Mamie Eisenhower ((Niagara Large Print Ser.))
Published in Library Binding by Ulverscroft Large Print Books (May, 1997)
Author: Susan Eisenhower
Amazon base price: $29.50
Average review score:

An Excellent Portrait of an Interesting Couple
Ike is one my historical favorites. I think his life testifies to the American dream - that a poor but enterprising boy from Kansas could achieve everlasting distinction as a Supreme Commander and President.

In Mrs. Ike you learn about his life partner. It wasn't always a happy marriage, and it was certainly tested by tragedy (death of 3-year old son) and the rigors of nomadic military life, particularly during the disarmament era after WWI. Yet they hung in there and made the most of their life together.

This is easy reading and a sometimes touching intimate portrait of a nice old-fashioned couple. They shared a 53-year marriage that took them from a difficult penny-pinching existence post WWI to great distinction and wealth later in life.

For those interested in the Ike-Summersby question, I think this book puts another nail in that silly coffin. I particularly like the description of their relationship as like "Lou Grant and Mary Richards" (from the Mary Tyler Moore Show). Based on everything I've read they were more like affectionate father and daughter than lovers. Yet its painful to read how, after Ike's death in '69, Mamie had to endure rumors and scuttlebutt during the next decade, including a nutty divorce story by Harry Truman, now discredited and widely cited as perhaps testament to Truman's senility late in life.

Lovely view of one of the finest First Ladies!
Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Eisenhower, has written a beautiful portrait of her grandmother and the strong marriage between the President and his First Lady.

Wait Tops a Fine Opener With Her Second "Shadows" Caper
The Agatha Award nominated "Shadows at the Fair" was a fine first effort, and Lea Wait's "Shadows on the Coast of Maine," more than fulfills that early promise.

Wait's sleuth, Maggie, is developing into an interesting character as her creator seems more assured in her handling of complexities, romantic and ethical. As in "Shadows at the Fair," there is a wealth of interesting peripheral detail. Wait is moving toward getting the balance right. Maggie and the situation are more interesting in the second book than the first.

No sophmore slump here! Maggie is in for a long ride, I think. This is someone you'll enjoy getting to know.

Excellent amateur sleuth mystery
When Maggie Summer's old college roommate and close friend begs her to come visit her in her new home in Madoc, Maine, she drops everything to see Amy Douglas. Her husband and Amy left their high powered jobs in New York City and bought an old Colonial home built in 1774, which they intend to restore to it's former glory.

The move hasn't worked well for the Douglas' as Amy tells Maggie the moment she enters the home. Sounds of a baby crying disturb their sleep as do phone calls with nobody at the other end. A fire breaks out in a room where nothing is combustible and shingles fall off the roof even when the roofer has fixed them. Matters take a more serious turn when Amy's part-time helper is murdered and her husband gets into a car accident because the brake line is cut. As Maggie starts putting the pieces of the puzzle together, she realizes that there are two separate groups at work with different aims and only one of them intended actual harm.

SHADOWS ON THE COAST OF MAINE is a picturesque amateur sleuth mystery that is perfect beach or pool reading material. Readers are treated to life in a small Maine village in which the same families have lived near each other for generations and an outsider is considered anyone whose gene pool hasn't resided there for over a century. Lea Wait has written a complex, multi-layered who done it that is fun to read and difficult to solve, leading to readers waiting anxiously for the author's next novel.

GREAT Story
I love Shadows on the Sea. It's a GREAT msytery! I could not stop reading it. I liked Jill and Wendy and I wondered what happened to Wendy. But my teacher says she's not the main character and maybe Joan hiatt harlow will write a sequell. It is a really neat story even though it happened long ago.The kids seeemed real. The bird (carrier pigeon)was a good idea for the mystery. The Crystals were real mean and I know some kids just like them. It must have been hard to be at war. I like all of Joan Hiatt Harlows books. She is a good author. Tracy

Vivid and suspenseful
Shadows on the Sea is a page turner. The author skillfully combines intriguing characters and a vivid, suspenseful plot with a fascinating and little-known episode during the second World War. Kids will love the believable dialogue. This book is a treat and offers interesting historical information as well.

We could all use Wisdom!
This book is fantastic to meditate on. I enjoyed reading this book through the first, second, and third time! There are so many lessons to be learned in life and this book gives you ways to interpret happenings in life. It is certainly a tool to gain christian maturity and spiritual growth. I keep it as a reference and enjoy sharing it with my friends as they experience difficulties in their lives.

The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is more in-depth.
Charles Stanley's book is a good basic introduction to the practical everyday wisdom in the book of Proverbs. Stanley's meditations highlight 31 themes to help you live life more skillfully. For a more in-depth look at King Solomon's wisdom read THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. It features 6 translations of Proverbs in parallel and a very interesting and readable commentary with historical photos that give you a sense of the culture of the time. It also examines and answers many of the riddles and mysteries in Proverbs.

A truly strange and compelling mystery!
First, let me explain that I am *NOT* particularly a fan of Ellery Queen. It's of the right generation for the mystery novels I do love best. But, try as I might, I've never really appreciated Queen as a character, and the stories don't intrigue me the way writers like Christie, Rendell or Bramah often do. So why, I've always wondered, did I have such fond memories of this particular novel of Ellery Queen, having read it more than a few years ago. I still had my old (ancient!) copy of it, so one day I took it out...and I found it just as compelling as I remembered! Okay, so I now had a mystery of my own to figure out. Several inquiries and web pages later, I had my answer. This is actually one of two Ellery Queen novels ghost written by none other than Avram Davidson! (The other one, if you're interested, is "The Fourth Side Of The Triangle.") Davidson is much better known for his fanstasy-type short stories...very much in the line of the "weird fantasy" (a genre that hardly exists anymore) published by Arkham House during their first three or four decades of publishing. Consider these quotes: "He was one of the finest short story writers ever to use the English language." "[He] may may have been one of the great short story writers of our times...the equal of, say, Saki and perhaps even John Collier." So, these two novels (if you can find them in print, that is) are more than a little bit of fun. If you're looking for something well worth your time, check them out!

Babies on Board (Silhouette Special Edition)

WONDERFUL, TOUCHING STORY!
Kate Hennessy is stranded in a jungle in Columbia with 3 infants.
Who the heck ever said that a woman had built in instructions for taking care of babies? She had an assignment to cover as a photojournalist. Protect her camera.

Being stranded with 3 babies and MATT SULLIVAN was not her idea of a picnic. Dang, the bus left without her. Matt Sullivan and the orphanage bus to the rescue.

She knew that Matt suffered from a severe, chronic case of the dreaded LWS - Little Woman Syndrome. [personally I think she suffered from fear of it].

Then to hear "The engine, she is dead" so many hours after excaping the firing zone and at least 2 days from the orphanage, Yikes, what next?

Matt wasn't surprised that Kate knew nothing about babies. Her feminine qualities left a lot to be desired..... or did they? Funny -- he'd never noticed those womanly curves before. And those smokey green eyes! Whoa! but the babies were leveling out the differences between Kate and Matt. Actually they started pulling well together

Those babies, little Charlie and Tommy and baby Maria, were hard to leave in the end. The story was exceptionaly moving. Except, again, they couldn't keep their hands? off each other in the end.

Recommended to enjoy --M

The Blood and Thunder Adventure on Hurricane Peak
When I was a little kid, this was my very favourite book!! Margaret Mahy is a very talented writer, and this book was great for me to read over and over again. I also liked the pirates mixed up voyage, it was another of the books written in Margaret Mahy's collection - with a very unique writing style. I was about 8 when I actually sent Margaret Mahy a fan letter!! I got a long (two pages on a typewriter!) letter back from her, with hand drawn (and coloured in) cats all over the border of the letter! This book is adventurous, fun and has a very twisted plot with talking cats and distant cousins, and a school of Magic!!! I suggest it for any one looking for a good read - so long as they haven't let go of their "INNER CHILD"!!!
