Wishbone mysteries - case of the online Alien
I had to study and do a diorama for this book, for a school project, it was a good mystery and the clues and puzzles kept making you think different things as the story went on, but in the end it was a simple case of ....i'm not going to tell you , you will have to read it yourselves!

Died on a Rainy Sunday

Well-written page-turner
"Died on a Rainy Sunday" is a beautifully written and scary novel. Jane Drummond, a wife and mother of two young children, takes on a temporary job as a script writer, and hires the McGregors (a husband and wife team) to help out at home. Immediately she realizes there is something very sinister about the McGregors -- and that something seems to involve her husband, Graham, as well. I did wish that Jane, as the heroine, had a bit more gumption, considering the number of chilling characters she had to deal with, but overall, this was a suspenseful and highly enjoyable read. If you are a Joan Aiken fan (as I am), definitely read this!

A great mystery for the Famous Five
"Five on Finniston Farm" was the first Enid Blyton book I ever read. Needless to say it got me hooked. All the Famous Five books are full of adventure and mystery. I really recommend any of them for younger readers.

In this one, the five are sent to Finniston Farm for a holiday. Soon they discover the Finniston's are in danger of losing the farm and they must find a way to help them before it is too late.

Any young reader who enjoys adventure stories or mysteries should read this book.

No-Nonsense Nell in a Freudian Mystery
When suffragette Nell Bray visits an old acquaintance working at a psychiatric hospital in Wales, she is soon embroiled in a puzzling mystery. Between shell-shocked soldiers on medical leave from World War I, doctors espousing Freudian techniques she does the agree with, and a fanatical supporter of the war who considers the patients shirkers, Nell has her hands full solving the crime. "Hanging on the Wire" is an interesting mystery investigated by an even more interesting amateur detective.

Murder on High (Beeler Large Print Mystery Series)

A "must" read if you ever visit Mt. Katahdin!
This is a great read - it mixes fact and fiction like creaming butter and sugar! The writer obviously did her homework - either visiting the great State of Maine in person, or researching one of Maine's greatest treasures - Mt. Katahdin. She also brought to life the history of the tribal nations in Maine using the "Ghost of Pamola." This story is a murder mystery set on Knife's Edge (Mt. Katahdin) and how, with the help of an "outsider" (New Yorker!), the local police department, along with the nosey townspeople crack the case in record time. Although I was able to knab the killer at the beginning of the book - it was pure luck! You'll never be able to guess the killer, but you'll be in for a visual overload with the perfect descriptions of Mt. Katahdin and surrounding areas. It's a short ride, but worth taking.

On a Shoestring to Coorg: An Experience of South India
Published in Hardcover by ISIS Publishing (December, 1988)

Informative and a Good Read
I had this author recommended to me by a friend who knew of my interest in other cultures, so I found this book in a local library and started reading. I find it to be amazing, especially for a journal of her travel experiences. She uses language which gives the book almost a flavor of fiction (I find that many nonfiction authors use very simple and often dry language, making such books harder to read). Occasionally she seems to have the perspective of a stereotypical European, but in general she manages to have a neutral viewpoint and tries to explain Indian customs from the point of view of Indians, as well as her reactions and those of her five year old daughter.

As far as I'm concerned, one of the best parts of this book is the way that it describes various parts of India in amazing detail, as well as giving some background on the area. Unlike many tourists, Murphy is not content merely to wander around seeing usual sites; instead, she tries to get to out-of-the-way places, and to experience life as much like an Indian as she can (while acknowledging that this can never be fully accomplished). This is perhaps one of the best "outsider" descriptions that I have read, as she really makes and effort to understand her new surroundings.

On Her Doorstep (Thorndike Large Print Romance Series)

As long as you know you're getting a reprint, go for it!
Kay Hooper is one of my favorite romance authors, even from when she was writing as Kay Robbins. This is one of her very-hard-to-find Robbins SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE romances (originally published in 1986, #378). It's entertaining (as are all her books!), with appealing characters, great dialogue, etc., although it doesn't have the paranormal/fantasy element of some of her others among my all-time favorites.

The Piper on the Mountain
Published in Hardcover by Magna Large Print Books (December, 1993)
Author: Ellis Peters
Amazon base price: $27.99
Used price: $14.95
Average review score:

A fun mystery
Fans of Ellis Peters's Inspector George Felse mystery series (the series she wrote before her more famous Brother Cadfael mysteries) will be very pleased with this book. Instead of George Felse, the hero of this story is George's son Dominic, who fans of the series have watched growing from a precocious adolescent to a teenager, and now to a very intelligent young man. On a trip with friends from university, Dominic stumbles accross a death which, although it was ruled an accident, may not have been so accidental after all. Not a little captivated by Tossa, the charming step-daughter of the dead man, he begins to investigate. The result is a clever, engaging mystery/suspense tale that will charm fans of the traditional British mystery.
