The Policy Governance (R) model in board leadership
John Carver On Board Leadership is a collection of articles that demonstrate the Policy Governance (R) model in board leadership, as written by its creator, John Carver, a man who has over twenty years of experience working with a variety of corporation boards. Addressing how to use the model of governance to improve communication and overall effectiveness, the role of committees, means for resolving disagreements, and much, much more, John Carver On Board Leadership is a solidly written, reader accessible, and effectively useful title recommended for anyone charged with the often difficult and complicated task of coordinating or leading a governing board.

Easy to Navigate This Rich Resource
WOW! This compendium of more than 100 of John Carver's articles would be useful enough if it only collected these important articles on Policy Governance into one volume. This publication goes several steps further - by starting with a Frequently Asked Questions Guide, the reader is directed to his or her most urgent concerns. These FAQs appear throughout the book along with pull-out quotes that focus the reader's attention on key issues in the section. Both these features make the book easy to navigate and consequently, a richer resource.

It's great to have these articles combined into one resource since many have been previously published in hard to access journals. This will be a great resource for those new to Policy Governance as well as to experienced practitioners.

A wealth of practical information
This book is a gold-mine of practical information about the application of Policy Governance®. Boards will find a wealth of wisdom from former issues of Board Leadership, as well as a number of articles published in industry-specific journals that were not previously easy to find, now all in one convenient, easy-to-use package. Articles are short, easy-to-read, and of practical "hands-on" value. The FAQ section permits the reader to zoom in on particular areas of interest. As a consultant in Policy Governance® , I find the book to be a very user-friendly reference. For boards using the model, it is an invaluable resource. This is a book that can be read cover to cover, or can be "dipped into" to address specific issues facing a board at any given point in time. A must for your board's reference and on-going development.

Babies on Board
A wonderful way to enhance your child's vocabulary by browsing through this clever and colorful picture book together. Filled with delightful pictures of children riding on things that that they are familiar with, it provides a fun way to converse with your toddler.

Really Good!
This book was a lot of fun for my nephews. They really liked the bright colors and the different types of transportation.
I would recommend the book for anyone that has a small child that likes to "read" their own books.

Great Gift, Fun Book
This book is a great addition to any new or new again mother, grandmother, great grandmothers, aunts, baby sitters, or anyone else who has a toy box!! This is a book that is easy for toddlers to grasp and mine chewed but stays in great shape! I take it everywhere, with the bright colors and the perfect size, my daughter can look at babies all day! Even my kindergarten age daughter loves to read it becasue it is a great accomplishment to say she finished a book and she is learning concepts too! I obviously love this book and I know you will too!

It feels like you wrote it just for me!
Words could never express my feelings for this story. It has touched my heart & soul like no other. I love everything about it. My dad passed away a few years back and I've been struggling with a lot of mixed feelings. (He was a Southern Baptist Minister) Sometimes I find myself being angry with God and I know that its not His fault. Your story truly opened my eyes to a different perception. I whole-heartedly believe in angels now. It makes perfect sense. Thank you for blessing me with your talent. I LOVE IT!!! I truly believe that God works in mysterious ways. Your story changed my life. I think that God intended for me to read it. Praise God for your witness in my life. I really needed to know that my dad or God hadn't forgot about me. And also I needed a reminder that God has a purpose and plan for everything. Sometimes the devil wants me to believe that God is punishing me by taking away everything that I've ever cared about. Thanks EJ Thornton, God Bless You!!!

I recommend the book to a wide readership!
I thoroughly enjoyed "Angel on Board," The story was highly entertaining and inventive and reassuring for anyone whose family has had a lot of what is thought of on this plane of existence as tragedy. Most interestingly as you read it, you find that it seems to explain a lot of little things that happen in day to day living as well, or maybe we just start looking for them. Whatever the case it is a blessing!

Beautifully done and so easy to read!
The experiences were so close to what happened to me right after my husband passed away, I had to put the book down because it brought back such an intense experience. But I picked it back up again and shared it with my daughter, who also loved the book.

My 2 year old loves it.
My two year old girl literally "bows" to the horse and "bows" to the cow and then she twirls and it goes on and on. She interacts with this book every time we read it. It's so upbeat and fun. We first took it out of the library and it broke my heart to have to return it. So I came here and ordered her her very own copy. I can't wait for her baby brother to engage in this book soon too.

Among the best and most loved at our house
I've been a fan of Sandra Boynton since the late 1970s. I was delighted to discover that she has written this extensive array of wonderful children's books. My son (now 14 months old - we've been reading this one for about 7 months) loves this one in particular. The cut-out front is fun to stick little fingers through, and the illustrations and rhythm of the text are fun to read and to listen to. He sometimes gets up and dances! He will pull this book out from among a pile of others when asked what he wants to read. You have to see the animals to appreciate Sandra Boynton's genius - the look on the face of the hen being 'swung by [her] partner' is hilarious.

Can't Help But Sing It.
We've been reading (singing) this book to our son since he was 6 months old. It's one of his favorites still at 15 months old. When Grandma comes over it's the first book he wants her to read...every single time. And she's more than happy to oblige since it's so much fun to read. It's such a great book---with cute illustrations and rhyming, you'll find yourself singing it out loud in no time.

Boynton Books are Great
This book is no exception. Almost everything I like about this book can be said about all the Boynton books that we have read.

Cute pictures, easy to read words, nice colors, applicable pictures and on and on.

I really enjoy the Boynton books. I can read them over and over again and not get too burned out on them. That is a bonus in my book as far as children's books are concerned. I particularly like her illustrations. They are simple enough that little children are not overwhelmed by too much going on with the picture. They are also applicable to the words on the pages.

This is not our first Boynton book and it won't be our last.

Absolutely adorable!
This is our most recent Boynton Board Book and we are pleased once again. The dinosaurs are adorable with surprisingly expressive eyes. The rhymes are clever too. We read to our 5 month old each night before bed and this is yet another Boynton board book that is ideal. Her books are just the right length for short attention spans and the bright illustrations captivate our little one. Thank goodness for Sandra Boynton!!

Dinos!
I never really realized how many different types of dinosaurs there were until I read this book, even if they be 'dinosaurs crammed in an elevator.' This book mentions all sorts of dinosaurs, from big to tiny, smooth to spiky and hot to cold. The pictures used to illustrate each type of dinosaur are really wonderful. They are bright, bold, colorful, and, above all, cute. Like all the Boynton books I've read, the words in this book rhyme very well, effortlessly. The rhyming also helps to make the book flow well, and flow well it does. This is a classic Boynton book, and is a wonderful book.

"We're going on a bear hunt. / We're going to catch a big one. / What a beautiful day! / We're not scared." So begins Michael Rosen's award-winning read-aloud romp We're Going on a Bear Hunt. In this lovely boxed gift edition illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, a small paperback version of the book is packaged with the softest, most fabulous little brown bear we've ever seen. Reenacting "Splash splosh! Splash splosh! Splash splosh!" across the river is much more fun with an actual bear on hand. (Ages 4 and older)

Wonderful Book
This book is fun and exciting - the short verses hold your attention and that of your young children. I have read this book to children as young as 10 months up to 8 years and they have all loved it.
This book would be useful in pre-school circle time with its repeated examples of "over" "under" and "through" could easily translate into play and movement activities.
The illustrations so beautifully capture expressions and movement.
In the story the family travels through mud, forest, snow and finally into a cave all in search of a bear, but don't worry, "it's such a beautiful day - they're not scared" The excitment builds - are they going to find a bear? And what will happen when they do? Read and find out!
I bought this book for my youngest child as a gift last year and I'm buying more this year to give to the children of friends.

Going on a Bear Hunt is a read again (and again) favorite.
Many children's books are a torture for parents of toddlers to reread over and over as this age group requires. This is the exception. Our family of six wore out this book and I am ordering another copy for the up and coming crop of readers. The older ones love to read it to the young ones and my two year old has it memorized. We all love to add our own nuances to the sing-song pattern to the story. I rarely buy books new (we haunt used book stores) but I have bought this one new twice now. It must be everyone's favorite- I have never seen it for resale. A definite must have for childhood!

'We're Going On A Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen.
If you're going to buy one book this year for a young child, you'd better make sure it's this one. 'We're Going On A Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen, is a children's adventure story that's guaranteed to leave you wondering at the end. What's the bear really like? Is it a good idea to go on a bear hunt? Maybe it's safer to stay at home in bed. If you did, maybe you wouldn't have such an exciting adventure!
This story is about an optimistic family and their dog who are determined to search for a bear, despite the obstacles in their way. What happens when they finally meet the bear? You'll have to read it to find out!
I recommend this brilliant story to parents and teachers of young children because, as well as being a fantastic read, it's a great book for teaching them about adjectives and prepositions: "A swirling whirling snowstorm. We can't go over it. We can't go under it. Oh no! We've got to go through it!" I also really like the illustrations by Helen Oxenbury because they help to tell the story and bring the characters to life. This is also one of my daughter's favourite bed-time stories. She's not scared...........

How about you?

Do you dare to find the bear?

A very nice book but for a little bit older child
I love this story but my son is only 16 months and it doesn't hold his attention as well as some of the other books we bought ("I'm a Big Brother," "The New Baby") to prepare him for becoming a big brother. The story is just beautiful and it reads very well; he's just not interested in it. I think if he was a little older, he might like it better.

The absolute best of the new sibling books!
Many of our friends and family are in the time of life when the families are expanding, so a book to soften the blow to a newly de-throned older sibling is just the thing. When we visit a family with a present for a new baby, I ALWAYS make sure I have this book in hand for the older child. The only thing I vary is which version I give (hardcover, paperback and board book based on the age of the child).
The book is full of incredibly beautiful images of a simple life with text that is rhythmic and flowing. It exudes love and caring without being smothering or indulgent. It reinforces the idea that a new sibling, rather than being an annoyance, actually adds to the joy that is family life!
It is, far and away, the best of the books I have seen on the subject and I've looked at dozens! We even have several that were given to my son when my daughter was born, however, this is the only one that stayed in our reading repertoire. The children still sometimes go back to it (and mine are 6 and 8 now). "There's always room... on Mother's lap" was nearly a mantra in our house for a number of years!

Beautiful Story and Illustrations
This book tells the story of a little boy who, while curled on his Mother's lap, wants to bring all sorts of other objects up with him... until the baby wants to be included. Of course, there's "always room on Mother's lap" which the little boy finds is not only true but a pleasant experience for him as well.

I love the restful illustrations and the ethnic items the young boy wants to have with him on mom's lap. The overall story is one of sweet acceptance and a perfect read for a young older sibling.

Nothing special
If you like Boynton's books, you'll probably like this one too. My son is more of a fan of her "Opposites" or "But Not the Hippopotamus". It's OK, as far as children's books go, but Boynton has done better.

A great children's book from as early as age 1!
I bought this book for my neice's first birthday, and she loves it! The pictures are wonderful, and the text is written in Boynton's usual melodic style--my neice certainly seemed to respond to the sound of others reading the words to her. The story describes five birthday monsters arriving and taking over on "your" birthday; although the monsters themselves aren't scary, young children who can comprehend the story might become upset by certain scenes (eg, the monsters eat all "your" cake!)--but of course, there is a happy ending. An engaging, fun story for young children.

My Favorite Boynton Book!
My daughter loved these books when she was a baby, and so did I! Of all the Boynton books, this is the one I like the best. The story is adorable and the cadence is catchy! Every time I see a copy of this book, the story is fresh as the first time I read it.

Fire on Board: Shirov's Best Games

Beginners and Intermediate players can enjoy this also
Don't believe those reviews that describe this book as suitable for advanced players only. I could enjoy this book without a board and pieces. The prose is somewhat limited.

All players deserve to be encouraged to look at his games.

Real Fire.
Please read the other reviews carefully. Like the man said, this book is NOT for beginners. Its NOT an instructional book. (Maybe an advanced manual for GM Tactics?) It is a book for the very discriminating connoisseur of the Royal Game. And you should be a fairly good chess-player with an above average grasp of chess tactics to "really get" whats in this book!

I found a few errors in this book. I also found one instance of the same line being analyzed twice with a different conclusion in each case! (Transposition.)

But for the most part this is an incredible chess book, crafted with great loving care by the authors. While it is probably over the head of the average chess player, the earnest student of the game will find much pure Gold here to mine!! Another warning: if you are the lazy type of chess player, you probably won't get much out of this book. Buy it ONLY if you are looking for a real challenge!!!(Understand: I am a Master, and many times the variations left me just scratching my head!!) This is the one chess book that, "Is looking for a few Good..." (To borrow a phrase.)

Fantastic Games
Fantastic games and a good chess writer. I learned (and am learning) a lot about sacrifices and tactics from this book.
