As a textbook
I use this text for basic and advanced courses at RIT. This book explains the multiple systems on modern offset lithographic presses. It is usually clear and concise (except its explaination of the many possible dampening systems is confusing). The diagrams and photographs are very helpful.

This book is appropiate for the layman or seasoned pressman looking for how the machine works. It does not tell one how to make the machine work or replace the manufacturers operation manual.

A very detail-oriented book
At that point, I purchased his book and found it very informative. It is a must-have for anybody who creates files for an Indigo digital press. After a while, it seems to become repetative, and there is an extensive amount of cross-referencing. All in all, the author tells his reader how to create quality files to achieve the needed outcome, and look good in the eyes of the Indigo vendor.

A Note from the Book's Author
The response from designers and press owners has made me proud of this book. The widely-praised file prep information remains vital for 2002 and beyond. Much of the machine-oriented information will remain helpful and applicable to future models of Indigo's presses, equipped with their continually-advancing technology. Thank you and happy reading!
(This book includes the 97-point file setup checklist with an expanded and detailed explanation of each point, an illustrated description of how Indigo technology works, an advanced topics section, and organizational features such as the table of contents, an exhaustive index, and cross-references within the text. When you're through reading the sections you like, you can keep the book handy for years to come, using it as a well-organized reference work.)

plesant surprise
dear author, i happened to buy this book way back in 1986. that's when i entered in to the field of printing.i had gone thro hardly about 40 pages when a friend who happens to be a fellow printer borrowed the book. probably he found the contents so relevant to his job, he claimed not to have borrowed the same, and i lost that book. at least upto what i had gone thro gave me a clear insight into offset printing. unfortunately, i didn't have any formal education in offset printing. this book had given a great amount of confidence to me, being a novice myself in the field at that time. and alas! i lost it by lending it. the store from where i bought the book had just that one copy. after that i kept searching for the same at whichever city my business took me to. only in vain. at last the search has ended - thanks to amazon.com, i will be abel to posses the book, posses more knowledge in offset printing to my advantage. just waiting to posses the power to deliver the best printbuys to my clients. plese let me have the latest edition of this book.thank you for providing the best of knowledge in offset printing.

The Practice of Printing: Letterpress and Offset

The standard letterpress printing manual
The most ubiquitous letterpress printing manual of the twentieth century, and one of the better ones. This is the standard, in print for over 40 years, from which most current letterpress printers first learned, and is an indispensable reference for the print shop. Although out of print, it is readily available, in one or another of its many editions, from most book arts dealers and online sources. In later years, it was distributed by the Kelsey Co. as the advanced printing manual for their mass-market presses. By 1971 (the edition you've found here at Amazon) it was updated to de-emphasize handset type, and was re-issued as "The Practice of Printing: Letterpress & Offset". If you are primarily interested in letterpress printing, try to get one of the earlier editions. It is unlikely that this book will be back in print per se, but certainly check Amazon zShops or Auctions for copies available for sale.
