Inspiring, Instructive
As we rise in levels of responsibility in organizational life, we begin to hear the tern, "servant leadership." Essentially, it's giving of yourself to support others, rather than leading by dominating others. A number of books have been written on the topic, but this one is different. The title is deceiving; your first thought might be that it's a parody or pick-up on Harvey MacKay's "Never Give a Naked Man Your Shirt."

This book is about knowing yourself so you better understand others to serve them and the world. It's about getting off the merry-go-round of life and making a positive difference in the lives of those around us. Berardi has given us a book that is thought-provoking . . . and heart-provoking.

I found myself turning down so many page corners that I finally gave up. There are nuggets on practically every page. "All things are possible for those who find their own unique way of serving others." "You don't have to be perfect to live a purposeful life as a servant leader." "We have blocked so much from our lives, we find that we're not really living at all." "People don't necessarily know what it is they actually need because they're focused more on what they want."

The first of the four sections of the book explains servant leadership. Then readers gain a wonderful experience in part two, learning how to get themselves ready to truly serve others. Part III is The Practical Side of Identifying and Serving the Needs of Others. The last section of the book describes Miracles in the Making. A reading list and index enhance the value of this volume.

Never Offer Your Comb to a Bald Man is illuminated by stories from the author's life, from the experiences of perspectives of people he has known, and from stories of others who bring life to each of the author's points. Although, this book is hard to put down for enjoyable and thoughtful reading, it can also serve as a text for what a lot of business leaders need to learn. I imagine a number of people who have read this book have slowed down, reoriented their thinking, and gained a whole new perspective and level of productivity in their lives.

Absolutely Outstanding, In Business And In Life
Apart from being an outstanding and entertaining read, this is a book which succeeds in all respects. The case studies are compelling and genuine, the insights are original and thought-provoking and the application of this wonderful book is as appropriate in life as in business. This book should be required reading for all who earn their living in the service sector. How frequently do we encounter "service" which strives to provide that which is expedient, rather than that which is required. The value-added, holistic vision of the author is both revolutionary and remarkable. A book of substance, rather than "feel good" platitude, yet one which leaves the reader feeling good. If you read no other business book this year, this book is the one!

An Inspirational Read....
This book was thoroughly inspiring for me. I could relate to so much of what was written. I was not even aspiring to achieve personal success, but after reading the book, I was inspired to reach deep down and re-evaluate exactly what I want out of my life. He has so many personal stories which are really touching, and very easy to relate to. He breaks down the traditional belief that the world is served by leaders and followers and says that it is the servant leader (the quiet, unassuming people) that most often emerge as some of the greatest leaders of our time. Throughout the book there are many references to Moe Howard from the Three Stooges and how his life showed classic signs of servant leadership. It was refreshing to read a book that could be so "light" at times - bringing humor to his stories. If you pick up nothing else this year, pick up a copy of this book and read it. You won't be able to put it down, and you will find yourself having a refreshed energy towards your life and your ultimate goals. Personal happiness can be achived, and Alexander J Berardi gives us some tools with which to find it.

The Last Trial: On the Legends and Lore of the Command to Abraham to Offer Isaac As a Sacrifice, the Akedah (A Jewish Legacy Book)

good for what it is, but . . .
I concur with the other reviewers, but only want to emphasize that this is a very dry, hard to read book - good for the scholar writing a Ph.D thesis, not so good for the average reader who just wants to brush up on the Akedah before the story is read in shul a few days later.

Isaac was killed?
Resurrected? The ram was in the Garden of Eden before it appeared in the thicket?

These are all stories derived from the Akedah throughout Jewish history, some older than others, some really stretching the text of the Bible. The process of midrash, answering those nagging questions about puzzling texts, filling in the spaces of various Biblical stories, has a long history, much of it written down in the various writings of the Rabbis after the fall of the Temple in 70 CE. One of the prominent stories which had taken on a life of its own after the writings of the Hebrew Bible had ceased (c. 165 BCE or so) was that of the sacrifice of Isaac.

If anyone is interested in the 'Jewish legends' (to borrow Ginzberg's title) and the lost art of story telling this is a wonderful addition to your library. Shalom Spiegel does a remarkable job in summarizing these stories as the pertain to the Akedah in great detail and at great length for such a small book.

Spiegel dives into the various threads of the traditions associated with the Akedah. Geza Vermes tapped into this a bit in his Scripture and Tradition in Judaism but Spiegel broadens the scope a bit. It is remarkable how many variants on this story are to be found throughout Jewish history, some of it still followed, some of it much more obscure.

This book reveals, to a degree, just how the development of this particular story led to the interpretation by the Christian movement and, though it is not discussed in this book, that of Islam. The stories found in these two religious traditions find their roots much more in the traditions than is commonly understood (or admitted).

The word of God is not static and is not confined to text. It lives and breathes and in this little book reveals proof of such life. A wonderful little gem.

Fascinating study of the Akedah (Binding of Isaac)
In this fascinating book, Spiegel traces rabbinic interpretations of the Akedah (the Binding of Isaac) from the earliest sources through the Middle Ages. He begins at the end, with the remarkable fact that during the Middle Ages, European Jews looked to Isaac as a martyr, the prototypical sacrifice and an inspiration to those Jews who killed themselves rather than convert to Christianity under the threat of the Crusaders. Despite the plain language of Scripture -- in which God ultimately tells Abraham *not* to sacrifice (or even harm) Isaac -- many aggadic interpretations suggested that Isaac was actually sacrificed and then brought back to life. In the 12th century rabbinic poem that inspired this book, Isaac is actually killed (and resurrected) *twice.* Spiegel asks how medieval interpretation of the Akedah could have strayed so far from the plain meaning of Scripture, and in particular whether the theme of the redemptive sacrifice of the first born should be traced to Christian influence. Spiegel looks to rabbinic, Christian and pagan sources to try to answer these questions.

This is a scholarly work and assumes familiarity with classical rabbinic literature. Some arguments are hard to follow if you do not know the generations of the Tannaim; and if you've never read any midrash, you will find the style very hard going at first. Even so, as a non-scholar with only a beginner's knowledge of rabbinic literature, I felt that I got a lot out of the book, particularly in terms of the history of ideas and the contrasts between Jewish, Christian and pagan notions of sacrifice, redemption and ancestral merit.

Medical treatments seem to get more promising every year, but they also seem to get more overwhelming. Faced with a seemingly infinite array of choices in the area of cancer treatment, what's a patient to do when time is of the essence? Breast Cancer: Beyond Convention is both a starting place and a steady companion through the labyrinth of health care. Assembling writing from over 20 experts, including Susan Love, Dean Ornish, and Rachel Remen, this guide intelligently touches on a range of complementary therapies while teaching readers how to choose among the possibilities for optimum results.

Chapters include essays on Chinese medicine, diet, meditation, micronutrients, and guided prayer, which cover issues from scarring and reconstruction to soy and osteoporosis. Each section includes concisely documented research and tips on how to distinguish the genuine healers from the "quacks"; at the end of the book is an excellent contact guide for information on all these topics, as well as nationwide support groups and specialized research clinics. For purposes of either prevention or treatment education, you'll find supremely helpful information that calmly helps navigate the waters of modern medicine. --Jill Lightner

Average review score:

An invaluable guide for BREAST HEALTH as well as cancer
After my diagnosis, I waded through shelves of library books on alternative health/breast cancer/healing options in order to find some of the information in this succinct literate volume. This anthology by complementary and alternative medical experts addresses both scientific and spiritual approaches for living with breast cancer. A road map to help with diagnosis, surgery, and after care . Excellent website directory.

Reading this book is like having a wise friend by your side
This is a book is about integrative medicine, the emerging field of medicine that attempts to integrate the best therapies from both Western medicine and from non-conventional practices.

As Dr. Dean Ornish points out in his forword, the authors of the fifteen books chapters are striving to build bridges between the two worlds. They have all made profound contributions of their own to the medical community, and the expertise they share in this book may help provide patients with new hope and new choices. There is a great richness of material here, covering many perspectives:

Mainstream physicians such as famed breast cancer experts Susan Love and Debu Tripathy share their experiences and how they came to understand that they had to open their minds and look beyond the traditional boundaries of medicine. Bestselling authors Rachel Naomi Remen, John Kabat Zinn and Michael Lerner share their experiences with the mysterious powers of the mind and heart in the healing process. The role of diet is addressed in chapters by lead editor Mary Tagliaferri and by Larry Kushi. Chinese Medicine, Herbs, Supplements and other natural products are treated in several chapters. Controversial subjects such as distant healing are being explored, and the role of support groups in the well-being of cancer patients is analyzed. There is a portrait of a clinic that has become "a healing place for low-income women", and even tips on how to evaluate health information on the internet.

No one book can cover all the possible alternative and complementary therapies that are being used by breast cancer patients. But one would hope that these thoughtful essays will inspire many more physicians and alternative medicine practitioners to build bridges between their worlds and explore the possibilities of collaboration with open minds and hearts.

Important work on grace
From the author of the popular Christian novel "The Fisherman" comes this theology of grace. This book is for all those who never tire of asking "why" or "how." It is an indepth analysis of the theology of grace. It is not for those who want a shallow and easy-read book with more illustration that truth to be illustrated. It is on my top 15 book list.

Cal Bodeutsch, author of The Grace Way (www.thegraceway.com)

A must read for anyone who wants a Christain life that works
Larry has a great way of taking a Christian concept and stripping away all the religion of today and showing how Christ wants to live through us. His illustrations are great and really help you to understand the concepts he is trying to get across. Truly if you want at true relationship with Christ and a life as Christ intended for us to live you should read this book

The Great Libertarian Offer

Author: Harry Browne

Consistent, Logical, and Pro-freedom
Harry Browne continues his wonderful streak of books dedicated to liberty, libertarianism, and the free-market.

In his bid for the Presidency of the United States, he has been ignored by the mainstream media that caters to the pro-government Bush and Gore syndicate. In "The Great Libertarian Offer," Mr. Browne offers countless examples of the federal government's failure to keep promises and the resulting chaos of failed federal programs. After identifying the problems with government, he lists examples of tried free-market solutions that have brought prosperity and freedom to citizens worldwide.

Mr. Browne offers a logical and workable solution to problems that most politicians just ignore or sugar-coat. The great part about this book (and libertarianism) is the fact that this solution is very simple: get the federal government out of our lives.

While exploring this book, readers will pleasantly discover that Libertarian ideas mirror the ideas of our country's founders - ideas of liberty, privatization, and individual responsibility.

The Case For Liberty
Like he did in 1994 with his book "Why Government Doesn't Work", Libertarian candidate for President Harry Browne outlines what he calls the Great Libertarian Offer and how we can achieve it. Browne shows the reader throughout the book how running to government to solve all of our problems ends up doing more harm than good. Browne puts forth a compelling case against big government and offers real and rational solutions to solve the majority of our problems.

Of Course you may not agree with everything he says, which he acknowledges, but the primary concern of reducing the size and scope of government, allowing us to make our own decisions, is something he says we all can agree on.

Though many of the same arguments can be found in 'Why Government Doesn't Work", there is also a host of new information such as Mr. Browne's budget plan, should he be elected, and new and updated material on the "issues" that have dominated this political season.

A quick and easy read for those new to Libertarianism and an excellent refresher/motivator for those already familiar.

What an eye opener.
This book opened up my eyes. I now clearly see what direction the country needs to head in order to be both free and competive in the world. Bravo, a master piece of facts and conclusions

Ribbon in the sky
I think Dorothy Garlock's books could be rated on separate items e.g. time setting, characters, plot, descriptions. Ribbon in the Sky I thought:
The setting: great
The characters: interesting
The plot: good
The descriptions: excellent.
I left the story a little sad for people that read and quoted scripture yet knew nothing of forgiveness, repentance or unity.

Absolutely wonderful!!!!
This is one great book!!! The romance is sizzling, and the characters are unforgetable!! I couldn't put this book down, and am now anxious for my next Dorothy Garlock book!

Tension and excitement are found on every page, as Letty and Mike fall in love, then lose each other due to Letty's father. When Letty - fifteen, pregnant, and terrified - seeks out her grandparents that she doesn't even know, in hopes they will take her in until Mike finds her, you can feel the fear with every word Ms. Garlock writes. Throughout the story, you feel all the growing pains of Letty as she becomes a woman and mother.

Mike Dolan comes home from working in the logging camp to hearing that Letty has become ill and died at her grandparent's farm. Mike begins a reckless life when joining the war, and when he finally gets out... decides to visit Letty's gravesite, hoping he'll be able to move on. Only instead of a gravesite for his dear Letty, he finds out she is alive... and with another last name... could she actually be alive?? ... and is she married???

In addition, the story includes murder and threats from Letty's family after many years... these items will keep you turning the pages!

This is a touching story, and if the romance doesn't draw you in... the relationship of Mike Dolan with his son, Patrick, will. Great story... and as always with Ms. Garlock, great selection of characters!!!

The Best Book I Have Ever Read!
This book was by far the most romantic, exciting, and wonderful book I have ever read. Dorothy Garlock is a fantastic story teller. Her characters are great people especially the men. This is not something that you normally find with other romance books. If you don't read this book and get excited when they finally find each other, then you are not human. Take my advice, buy and READ this book!
