Yesteryear by Dorothy Garlock
This is my favorite book by Dorothy Garlock. Outstanding story. I have read it many times and it is on my shelf of keepers. If you like Dorothy Garlock books you will love this one. John Tallman and Addie Hyde are so realistic.

One of her best
This is one of my favorite Garlock books. At times I laughed so hard I had tears running down my face. For anyone that has read Dream River this is a must!

Ribbon in the sky
I think Dorothy Garlock's books could be rated on separate items e.g. time setting, characters, plot, descriptions. Ribbon in the Sky I thought:
The setting: great
The characters: interesting
The plot: good
The descriptions: excellent.
I left the story a little sad for people that read and quoted scripture yet knew nothing of forgiveness, repentance or unity.

Absolutely wonderful!!!!
This is one great book!!! The romance is sizzling, and the characters are unforgetable!! I couldn't put this book down, and am now anxious for my next Dorothy Garlock book!

Tension and excitement are found on every page, as Letty and Mike fall in love, then lose each other due to Letty's father. When Letty - fifteen, pregnant, and terrified - seeks out her grandparents that she doesn't even know, in hopes they will take her in until Mike finds her, you can feel the fear with every word Ms. Garlock writes. Throughout the story, you feel all the growing pains of Letty as she becomes a woman and mother.

Mike Dolan comes home from working in the logging camp to hearing that Letty has become ill and died at her grandparent's farm. Mike begins a reckless life when joining the war, and when he finally gets out... decides to visit Letty's gravesite, hoping he'll be able to move on. Only instead of a gravesite for his dear Letty, he finds out she is alive... and with another last name... could she actually be alive?? ... and is she married???

In addition, the story includes murder and threats from Letty's family after many years... these items will keep you turning the pages!

This is a touching story, and if the romance doesn't draw you in... the relationship of Mike Dolan with his son, Patrick, will. Great story... and as always with Ms. Garlock, great selection of characters!!!

The Best Book I Have Ever Read!
This book was by far the most romantic, exciting, and wonderful book I have ever read. Dorothy Garlock is a fantastic story teller. Her characters are great people especially the men. This is not something that you normally find with other romance books. If you don't read this book and get excited when they finally find each other, then you are not human. Take my advice, buy and READ this book!

When Ben Waller is hired to do some work for the lumber mill, he leaves his young, deaf daughter in Dory's care. It isn't long before the unlikely foursome forge a bond strong enough to stand up not only against Dory's brothers but against other, more sinister forces as well. Dorothy Garlock has long been one of America's favorite storytellers. In Sins of Summer, she delivers the emotional, heartwarming romance that her fans know and love. --Maudeen Wachsmith

Another Wonderful Book From Dorothy Garlock
I discovered Dorothy Garlock's work about a year ago when her book "With Hope" kept calling to me every time I walked by it in the book stores. I was so delighted in that book that I have been grabbing them every time I find one by her. No need to read the name or even what the story line is about - if it is by Dorothy Garlock it's a good read.

Wonderful story
I cannot give this book more than 5 stars or I would. Once again Dorothy Garlock has written a wonderful story. Her knack for detail is wonderful. I have read so many of her books and think I've read them all then discover that there are others that I've missed. She is a very easy read. Sometimes, with other writers I have to go back and read something over but not with Dorothy's writing. The brutality of the people in this story is so real that I almost believed that these cruel characters were real. Keep up the good work Dorothy, we love your books.

Have to agree...
... Dorothy Garlock is an excellent writer, that always satisfies... and exceeds your expectations, with each and every book she writes. This story was no exception.

If you take a look at all the reviews that I've written so far, you'll see that most of the books are Dorothy Garlock books. When I picked up With Hope for the first time, I never even heard of her. I just found the book in a box of books at my mother's house, and I was looking for something different to read. I never imagined what effect it would have on me.

Now I probably read about twenty-five of the thirty plus books she has written... and this was since August 2001!!! For a person that doesn't read about two to three books a year, that should say a lot!!!

I've been passing each and every one of Ms. Garlock's books to my sisters, mother, and grandmother - after I finish each one. They like them as much as me, and the stories that I thought were great, but not her best, they liked even more. We all have different tastes, but we all love Ms. Garlock's stories!

Nevertheless, this story is just as action-packed, and romantic as all of her stories. You'll feel for the stress and terror that Dory felt each and every day of her life... finding relief only in her daughter and brother, James. Dory and James are up against the world, or so it seems, as they try and survive their day to day life, at the hands of their step-brothers, Louis and Milo. James, never really realizing how dangerous their lives were, until Ben comes to work at the logging mill run by Louis, Milo, and James.

Then the story is just like a ball of yarn coming unravelled, as it is rolled. Each event that occurs brings Dory and Ben closer together, as well as makes their lives more dangerous in the process.

There is also a mystery of the Ben's deaf daughter, and then the love she discovers in James. These two characters were so strong, and so enjoyable to read.... and easily could have been main characters in another story, without losing an ounce of charm.

This story is full of gunshots, murderers, a rapist, a questionable marshall, a mystery behind the mills accountant, and the strange family relationships and complications. Everything comes to a head, and you feel the tension of the family, then it slowly unravels leaving you in awe over the truths that are discovered.

Amateur Writer
Even though her mother is one of the best mystery writers out there, and even though her mother has has been dubbed, "The Queen of Suspense," Carol Higgins Clark has not inherited any of her mother's writing expertise. I find that her writing is very young and she is just an amateur writer. The main character, of whom she has written a series around, is Regan Reilly, a P.I. in New York City. She is thirty years old, and acts like a three-year-old child. She practically lives off her parents, and sticks to them like glue. And why is it that her parents just coincidentally show up wherever she is in each story? Carol Higgins Clark tries to write in her mother's style, and isn't successfully pulling it off. Mary Higgins Clark's writing and books are so good that you cannot put the book down; you don't want to stop reading even when you're dead tired, because it keeps you in suspense and some are frightening. (Aren't scary books the best type of book to read before bed?) But Carol Higgins Clark's books are the type that you pick up to read when you have nothing else to do, and when you're tired you put down to sleep. They aren't suspensful, and they aren't good enough to read through the night. Her vocabulary is very young, and her characters childish. She has eighty-year-olds who act like they're twenty and twenty-year-olds who act like they're four. When I read the "About the Author" part of the book, I saw that she was proud of her mother, very pointedly saying, "...the daughter of Mary Higgins Clark..." as though it would help sell this rather poorly-written book. And I also realized that she was basing her characters around her own life. All I have to say is that she has to grow up if she acts the same way that Regan does, alternating from a four-year-old to a FOURTEEN-year-old. All in all, this book does not come highly recommended. But if you want to spend money buying a book that's plot isn't even good, then I would recommend that you buy and read this book.

An excellent book
An excellent book by Carol Higgins Clark. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down! A definate recommendation for mystery and suspense fans.

AN INCREDIBLE PLOT; HIGH FUN
I, for one, am getting just a bit peeved at those who think CHC's books are amatuerish and undeserving of publishing. Let us consider for a moment a woman writer--a woman mystery writer--whose books are outsold only by the bible. That's right, Agatha Christie. Let us compare the two. What was AC best known for? Well, it sure as hell wasn't character development. You couldn't tell Poirot from Miss Marple if one of them didn't have a yin and the other a yang. Giving them quirks is not character development. No, AC was best known for...what? Not character development, that's for damn sure. Not poetic, beautiful writing. As you can see, most of her books are slim, hard little gems that are short, fun reads. *Gasps* Much like CHC! What a coincidence! Dame Agatha Christie was known for (drumroll please) ingenious plotting!! Much like in Carol Higgins Clark's "Decked". She inherited this from her mother.
Let's have an overview, shall we?

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: neither CHC or AC

GREAT, POETIC WRITING: neither CHC or AC
PLOT DEVELOPMENT: both CHC and AC
INGENIOUS PLOTTING: both CHC and AC

Am I the only one who sees a pattern evolving here? I thought so. You see, if we adore Agatha Christie because of her deviously simple mysterious plots, then must we not love Carol Higgins Clark for the same reason?? Of course! So, I must ask, if, as writers, Agatha Christie and Carol Higgins Clark are so similar in their plotting and writing, then why the horrible reviews of CHC and fantastic reviews of AC? Think on it a bit. I'm sure it will come to you...

Love and Cherish Spec Price Offer

(yawn)
Dorthy Garlock's Love and Cherish has an insipid meandering excuse for a plot. She drudges along a well worn path through historical romanance: the lovely but tiny young maid falls in love with the huge life-harden man and in turn wins his heart. I love a good roamance with a happy ending, but this is entirely too predictable. The dialogue is so honeyed, it is laughable. If this book is publishable, we should all give writing a book a try!

Charming
This is a charming little story, with a little of the hardships of the time. No, this is not Ms. Garlock's best... and no, there is not quite enough emotional conflict to carry the story for the 343 pages. However, it is a sweet story. If you're looking for a simple story without too much conflict, this is it!

Cherish spends the entire book letting Sloan determine the route of the relationship, and giving into his every whim. Unlike most of Ms. Garlock female characters, Cherish is quite dependent on Sloan. Otherwise, it's a good story.

BETTER THAN YOU THINK!
Cherish Riley is displaced from her Virginian home and lost and alone with some crude grunts. She is waiting for the return of her brother but the crud wants to trade her off to some weasels.

She takes off to try and disappear into the forests along the Kentucky river. Mind you, this is Daniel Boone's time in history.

Terror, fear and exhustion dog her footsteps until she is rescued by a bear of a man and his unapproachable dog, Brown. [grin] Blink yourself into her time and see how you would fare. Traveling in October with no real warm clothing had to be a trial in itself. Sloan did his best to provide for Cherish.

Sloan Carroll is looking to pick up a wife to take home to his homestead to take care of his brother's child. Cherish is an angelic answer to his problem and he determines to return home sooner than expected. And he intends to keep his heart intact. No falling in love and giving any woman emotional power over him.

Except for those blasted Hurons slowing him down. The Frenchie, Pierre is one lovable character and puts Cherish at ease. It's not easy being seventeen in a land of men, and one needs a man's protection.

I could feel the freezing cold and exhustion of the characters as they arived home needing the help of Juice and True to make it inside. These two men turn out to be true friends.

The advent of Ada coming for her baby, Orah Delle and stalking Sloan was a bit wicked. And then the doubts raised by Minnie Dove and her pursuit of Sloan and the friendship of John Spotted Elk began to round out Cherish's life in the small community.

I don't see how she got over the visual extermination of the river rats so quickly - [I would still be having nightmares]but Cherish had the support of so many friends. I hope John Spotted Elk gets a story and a woman of his own.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [if you can get in tune with the times.] I couldn't put it down and to me that makes an excellent story.

Definitely not great literature, but fun nonetheless.
I was given this book several years ago and just read it recently.Yes, it is predictable and far from great literature; yet I found it to be fun. I think "movie of the week" is a perfect description. Sometimes you just need a simple, predictable story to escape with. I found this book to be the perfect boring, rainy day companion. A nice break to my usual reads. To me, I found it to be a way to pass the time similar to the Harlequin Romances I read as a pre-teen. A good book to read when the environment is hectic and full of frequent interruptions i.e. while travelling, at the beach, on the bus, in a house full of very young children. I would read more books by Carol Higgins Clark.

A GREAT MYSTERY! A LIGHT READ!
I found this book to be very good. The one thing I like about Carol Higgins Clark is that her books are very good and suspensful and very simple and light to read.If you are looking for a mystery to read on a snowy night I would recommend this! Better yet if you are at a ski resourt and you are looking for a good mystery this would be a good time to read ICED!

Just Another Winner
I am consistently baffled by the reviewers who would have you believe that Carol Higgins Clark is not worth reading, that she is a terrible, no-good, very bad writer. I must disagree, once again. Let us review what I've said earlier in other CHC reviews.

CHC is much like Agatha Christie inasmuch as Christie's writing was, like CHC's, formulaic and light on character development, high on plotting. CHC's plotting is ingenious. Regan Reilly is a likeable character, even if she isn't very well drawn. CHC is not trying to be James Lee Burke or Sharyn McCrumb or Sue Grafton who are very high on character development. No, CHC, I believe, doesn't want anything to take away from her story. She's telling a great one in "Iced".

In this wonderful suspense tale, Regan Reilly and her mother Nora Regan Reilly and her father Luke Reilly are all in Aspen, Colorado with some friends. They are there to enjoy the skiing and the fine dining and help Regan's friend Louis open up the Silver Mine Inn. Several valuable paintings are being swiped by who people think is Eben Bean, an ex-jewel thief. When in reality Eben has been kidnapped by the real thieves who themselves are being watched by "the Coyote", a expert art thief. There are enough twists in here to keep you guessing and enough characters so you don't get bored. Snap up a copy of CHC's "Iced", curl up under the covers at night or lounge on the couch during the day and go to Aspen with Regan.

WOW !!
I see from the other reviews that people either LOVE this book or HATE this book! I think its fun and written well -- I canNOT agree with those that put it down. Read it and see for yourself.

Good and entertaining read
I thought this was a good, light read with a bit of humor and interesting characters. I have just started reading Carol Higgins Clark's books (this is my third) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a light mystery read with a touch of humor.

Unputdownable
This is one of my most beloved websites ever, and after voraciously devouring CHC's "Snagged", my first Regan Reilly mystery, I was utterly aghast at the unbelievable one-starred review. I believed this book to be one of the best mysteries I've ever read. And I've read neary 300, and I think I'd know a lemon when I spotted one. CHC keeps the suspense moving right along, the story is...usnagged, unsnared, unhitched, hurtles along the pages like a wildfire. Okay, so the ending is just a tad too pat, a tad too perfect, but it's still a great novel. She writes like her mother, in the same classy, almost elegant style. I, personally, think CHC is a much better novelist than actress. Do yourself a good deed and pick up a paperback copy of "Snagged". You'll be sure to enjoy it.
