The nu-metal guide
Nu-Metal, Nu-OutlookI only read this book due to the fact that I enjoyed Mr. McGivers 'Extreme Metal' book so much. I do not care for Nu-Metal but despite this fact, I found this book to be a very enjoyable read as well as informative. It contains an excellent section on the origin of this genre & pays respect (or blame) where it's due. Through the pages of this Nu-Metal guide of sorts, I actually discovered several bands that I now listen to on a regular basis. Thanks for such an informative tool, Mr. McGiver. I don't believe anything else like this even exists.
The best nu-metal book I have seen! This book rules! So many bands I never heard of, great pictures too. Long but helpful introduction telling us where nu-metal comes from. Ya gotta get this if you like any new rock band.

Co-Thinking the Ab-GrundWe are enveloped in this book by an Introduction and thirteen masterful essays, on and in the Heideggerian movement of enowning, a.k.a. the event of appropriation (Ereignis). I use the word "enveloped" with care, as this book is not a presentation that the reader can enact on her or his own as if it entails simply gathering the meanings of key terms and 'ideas.' This is so because the English rendering of Heidegger's key terms is itself an act of enowning that pulls in the reader to re-experience the space between these two great philosophical languages. I have never accepted the absurd claim that English is inferior to German in its philosophical power, scope, and richness. I would venture to say that translations of the terms and sentences of the astonishing text that is the subject of these essays, namely, "Contributions to Philosophy: From Enowning," struggle to exhibit the power of English not only to faintly mimic Heidegger (an insulting idea of the Germanophiles), but to move into other and equally profound momenta of language that bring English to the test of its own resources.
The writers of the essays in the book all have a long-time deep familiarity with Heidegger's key work in the period of the so-called turning (late 1930s) where the Dasein-problematic of "Sein und Zeit" becomes internally transfigured into and with the gifting of time-space, which opens out the reticent ground (ab-grund) that in turn can judge and measure the ungrund of our technological culture.
Rarely does one find a gathering of secondary, yet primary, essays of such high caliber as in this anthology. The "Companion" probes into generic and 'structural' issues as well as into such themes as: the last god, the leap, be-ing (seyn or beyng), beings as a whole (the Greek conception in the first beginning), and things in being. The essays elucidate the tensions between the first ancient beginning and the other beginning that is yet and not yet enacted within the provenance of the first beginning.
For an absolute beginner in Heidegger studies, this is not the place to even attempt a movement of encounter, yet for the advanced novice, this book is accessible on different levels and in different ways. It has opened my eyes to new ways of re-enacting my previous readings of "Contributions to Philosophy," as well as deepening my relationship with one of my most insightful and overturning/re-tuning interlocutors. This anthology is indeed a rare treasure in a decidedly mediocre period in the history of foundational or grounding philosophical query. It is, dare I use the cliche, a must read/encounter.

Core Curriculum for Pediatric Critical Care Nursing
Published in Paperback by W B Saunders (October, 1997)
Amazon base price: $54.95

Best Book for serious Pediatric ICU NursesI was lucky to get this book at a used-and-reduced price; however, that doesn't change the fact that the book is outstanding in it's content. I own Hazinski's pediatric ICU "bible", but this book is SO much more detailed. If you want to learn peds cardiology...REALLY learn not only the congenital malformations but the surgery for each malformation with detailed diagrams in a step-by-step process, then this is the book for you. Each section starts with detailed embryology and expands your knowledge base from there. Most of the PICU nurses I work with have grabbed this book out of my nursing bag to use as a reference many times in the month I've owned it. They are all planning to buy it in the near future. This is a great book even if you don't plan to take the AACN certification exam for RNC. I highly recommend it!

The Final Report on the Subsequent Nuremberg TrialsThis report was written by Telford Taylor (who should be credited as the author in Amazon.com's listing) and summarizes the 12 "subsequent" or "American" trials of Germans in 1947-48, which were his responsibility as Chief of Counsel for War Crimes. It is an essential historical document and Wm. Hein deserves credit for reissuing it.

A Great Work on Isma'ili Usul al-DinThis translation is delightful and rich. It in enjoyable to read which is much more than can be said for most books which address the ritual and basic practice of Islam. This work was composed by al-Qadi al-Nu'man in 349 hijrah and is brimming with traditions emphasizing the more spiritual nature of the Isma'ili understanding of Islam. The work goes over the seven pillars of Islam (as opposed to the more common five pillars of the Sunni branch) and uses the typical presentation by citing first the Prophet, then Ali and then one of the seven Imams considered authoritative by the Isma'ili school.
The value of this work, aside from its scholarly value, is the life it injects into what can amount to a dull subject. As a Muslim who roams freely between the many manifestations of Islam, both legally speaking and spiritually speaking, I found this work to be helpful in my own engagement with the Divine.

We are truly blindIn this book, Naimy has portrayed to us a very simple basic suggestion. A suggestion that we are of the same rank no matter what we may learn and achieve. For the ordinary person has his gift of being ordinary but his ordinariness if viewed at another angle could tell us that he is greater than the captain of the crew. So Naimy has shown to those of them who choose to live monastic lives that no matter what our designations we have all come for the same purpose. Not to lead but to serve.
The lighthouse is very symbolic; it shows us a rocky path lest we crush. Thus if one is blind how would he know if there is a lighthouse ahead? The ambitious man never really sees the lighthouse and has to dash against those rocks. So work to serve as any one can lead or be a guide This is for those who intend to join the monastic life and for us lay people as we all forget our very purpose in life.
A Spiritual ClassicThis book first came out in 1948 and has been reprinted several times since then. It has been translated into several languages and also been turned into a play. The author was a close friend and associate of Kahlil Gibran who wrote The Prophet. The Book of Mirdad is a beautiful story containing much wisdom, which has been an inspiration to many. I am so glad it is back in print again after being hard to find for several years. This book has gone around the world and has been recommended by spiritual groups as diverse as the School of the Golden Rosycross (Lectorium Rosicrucianum) in the west and Radha Soami Satsang in the east.
Mirdad-An unfaililng helmsman withinThis story of a monastery is very sybolic representation of every soul in search and quest for the ultimate truth of being, which lies hidden within and reveals itself to the adventourous spirit who shakes off everything that binds him to the appearnce-the external play of 'Maya'to put it into the vedic term.Time spent in reading this book is like setting out on that inner journey of soul in a constant company of That invisible helmsman within.
You can agree or not with the author in some things like classified or not some groups as nu-metal (Nickelback a nu-metal band? hummm...), but anyway is a good guide to learn a lot about the new school metal.
The only compliment is that is from 2001, so if you buy it now (like I did) it's 2 years old and this is a lot of time in a so young music style like nu-metal is. Maybe Joel McIver is working in a update to this great book?
