Five Star Winner
This book is a five star winner. A love affair, a witchy mother-in-law, a marriage headed for disaster and a sympathetic 'other woman' put Catherine Spencer's latest book a cut above the rest. This writer knows how to deliver a story packed with emotion, passion and originality. I highly recommend it.

The Unexpected Wedding Gift
Catherine Spencer does it again! Deft characterization and a plot which revolves around every bride and groom's worst nightmare make this latest book a fabulous and entertaining read. The author has perfected the art of wringing emotion out of her audience. Definitely a five star read!

From book: RIDING AFTER RUSTLERS
Kate set the alarm clock. "We'll leave before dawn," she said, pulling on a jacket and boots. "I'm going to go call Dad."

"We shouldn't ride bareback," Carole suggested after Kate left.

That made sense. This wasn't a pleasure ride. This was serious business. The lives of many horses could be on the line.

A minute later Kate reappeared. Her face looked grim.

"What's the matter?" asked Stevie.

"The phone's dead. The storm must have knocked it out," Kate answered. "It looks like we're on our own."

Very strong
This is a very good read for category romance. Ms. Lynne is an exceptional writer. She needs to explore different types of characters though.

I've read this book a dozen times and never tire of it!
This was the first by Lynne Graham that I ever read. I immediateley began searching for more! From the very beginning I was enthralled by Leigh (the heroine)and Nik,the sexy Greek husband she fell for the moment she saw him!
At seventeen, Leigh marries Nik Andreakis thinking that he is marrying her for shares in her father's shipping line. Five years pass and Leigh, now in love with another man, decides it's time for a divorce. After all, thier marriage isn't a real one and he lives the adulturer's dream existence. Leigh then finds that there never were any shipping shares...and after five years, Nik has other ideas for this marriage than divorce...

Great story
The hero is forced into marrying The heroine, but the heroine does not know this. The story begans five years into the future, the heroine barley sees her husband and doesn't know why he is always cold to her. The heroine is tired of her marriage and is ready to move on with another man whom she thinks she's in love with. All of a sudden her husband wants to see her and she soons finds out why he has been so cold to her through out their marriage. The husband then informs her that he is now ready to be married while she want's a divorce. I loved this story very much and I love how the husband can't let go of his wife and owns up to his mistakes.

Start to a Promising Series
This book is not a typical Christian romance. It's much better. The characters aren't thrown into improbably sappy situations, in fact, it's quite the opposite. These characters are flawed, abused, and not destined for your typical fairy tale ending. People get sick, die, have to live down doing bad things, and don't necessarily end up with the first romantic pairing they are put in. This isn't normal for a Christian romance and it's refreshing to find a book that is historically realistic and still very readable.

I wait with great interest to see how things go now that the storyline has finally reached Australia.

Best Series EVER!
I loved the whole series, but book one is my favorite. Even if you're not big on the whole religion aspect, this book is an amazing mix of adventure, heartache, family values, and has great historical aspect. I love historical fiction, and I have read a lot of it, but this book was one of the prime examples of the Australian-Penile-colonies .
I got totally caught up in the entire storyline, and I was unable to put the book down, and once I finished it, I read the rest of the series, then I read the whole series all over again. The characters are so well developed, and it's as if they were real people, living a real life, not like other books where everyone seems so fake, and the situations they get involved in are so fanciful and everything is just perfect. The author keeps things real, and shows you how like would have really been.
It's a great book that I recommend for everyone to read.

Exciting Novel
This book was terrific. I could hardly put it down. I felt like I was right on the ship with the rest of the transportees.
I liked the book so much I went out and bought the rest of the series. A friend's daughter is now reading them and is really enjoying them too.

Is this a reprint of the Silhouette Shadow series?
Miss Vaughn is a terrific writer. My question here is if these books in the Dreamscape series are not the same books that were released earlier under the Shadow imprint.

Synopsis
NOBODY HAD TO TELL SYLVIE PEABODY THAT SOME THINGS WERE BEYOND HUMAN UNDERSTANDING. AFTER ALL, SHE WAS A WITCH-A WHITE WITCH OF UNCOMMON POWER. BUT EVEN SHE WAS POWERLESS TO EXPLAIN THE NIGHTMARE THAT GRIPPED THE LITTLE TOWN OF STAGWATER WHENEVER THE FULL MOON APPROACHED. WAS IT REALLY POLLISBLE THAT A WEREWOLF WAS STALKING THE LOUSIANA NIGHT? AND WAS IT PURE COINCIDENCE THAT THE HORROR HAD BEGUN WHEN THE VERY MYSTERIOUS RAND GARNER BOUGHT THAT CRUMBLING OLD ESTATE ON THE EDGE OF TOWN? HE WAS A MAN WITHOUT A PAST, AND SYLVIE KNEW SHE MUST NOT FALL PREY TO HIS LETHAL CHARM AND ANIMAL GRACE. AND YET NOTHING COULD KEEP HER AWAY FROM HIM-NOT EVEN HER RISING TERROR.....

Re-read a thousand times
I found this book years ago in a Kroger book section. And since that time, I've re-read it a thousand times. There is nothing more wonderful than the play between Rand and Sylvie. Rand is the hero I believe most women would love to find, whether physically, or someone as fun to be around. The Wiccan elements are wonderful. Having been in the Craft for over 20 years, I can give the author a great thumbs up for telling the truth about witches.

As for the Deloup House, I wish often there was such an attraction in Lousiana - and that when I visited it, Rand would be there.

A must for all of you wanting humor, horror, a strong female lead, and a beautiful hero - read Waiting for the Wolf Moon!!

Weapons and Warfare in Renaissance Europe: Gunpowder, Technology, and Tactics (Johns Hopkins Studies in the History of Technology. New Ser, No 22)

Francis Bacon, writing in 1620, remarked that the magnetic compass, the printing press, and gunpowder changed the appearance and state of the whole world. Bert S. Hall focuses closely on the last innovation to examine the effects of changes in military technology on European history in the late Middle Ages and early modern era. Strategists, he writes, first used guns as a means of inducing panic in an enemy. When rival armies gained access to this technology, the psychological use of firearms gave way to their employment as weapons of mass destruction. With increased military power came a transformation in the power of states, allowing greater centralization and force. Military history buffs will find much of interest in these pages.
Average review score:

Outstanding.
1.000 words could be not enough to praise this book. Bert Hall produced a long needed work that will remain a foundation-stone in military technology of the black powder era.

Original thinking and excellent scholarship.
It didn't take long for me to be pleasantly surprised at the high level of scholarship and clearly presented facts, the sort of writing all too often lacking from this area of history. As the author notes, many technology historians, military historians, and arms and armor writers propagate continuing myths and assumptions that can't be supported when the facts are examined closely. Here, Hall does the topic justice and it is clear he did his homework. The chapter discussing the technology of gunpowder was especially interesting, and supports his case for the reasons firearms developed as they did. I recommend a trip to the Metropolitan Museum in New York to have a look at their firearms, where many aspects of his discussion will further illuminate the items on display.

technology and warfare
Best treatment of weapons and Renaissance-era warfare !!

An entertaining read but not a keeper
My second foray with Deborah Hale - I read "A Gentleman of Substance" last year.

The plot of this novel was an interesting idea although I have seen the reverse Pygmalion concept better done; Judith Ivory's The Proposition is better, in my view. Ivory's quality of prose is better than Hale's and her characters are better rounded. My main problem with this story was that the male protagonist was not well enough developed. The idea of using an enlisted man (rather than an officer/member of the nobility, etc, etc) was good but it just did not stand up to scrutiny as we do not know enough about his army experiences to understand the adult man. We know about his past as a footman and are given insight into how this effected him (eg he enlisted)and although we are given to understand Morse Archer was something of a hero in the Peninsula, we aren't given enough detail to sketch in his character.

Although Richard Sharpe (of the famous Bernard Cornwell series) was an enlisted man promoted from the ranks to officer, he never was accepted in the drawing room as Morse Archer is and Sharpe had more "elevated" tutoresses than Archer. So, this is a rather dangerous idea to write about without some better understanding of the social and military history of the times.

I don't think that Leonora was particularly sympathetic although eventually she does come to a good degree of personal insight and I was glad she woke up and went after her man! I don't think her behaviour was particularly beliveable within the contemporary context of her times. However, she matured and developed in a more believeable way than Sgt Archer.

I also question the plot device of having Algie fall in love with and expect to marry a servant - no matter how clever and sweet she might have been (and stupid but sweet he was), they both would have been ostracised from polite society and most certainly never accepted by her class either. A nice idea but ultimately completely unbelievable and therefore unsustainable.

I found the first half the the book somewhat boring and it was not until I was into the second half that the characters and the story began to satisfy. The pace was too slow; not enough happened and I kept waiting for some satisfying character development.

The author clearly has some talent but needs sharper editing to crisp up her writing and plotting. I shan't give up on her yet as I think she has potential and she was not afraid to take an unusual plot device and try it out.

Fabulous twist on Pygmalion.
Deb Hale's story is a twist on one of my favourite Bernard Shaw books. This is another keeper in my eyes. A well thought out tale loaded with back story and great motivation, The Wedding Wager is one of those stories that keeps you up at night. The hero is to die for. Who could ever resist a handsome soldier? I found the setting vivid and fascinating. The tension between the hero, Morse, and the heroine, Lenora has depth and orginality. I loved the ending, but won't give it away here. This story is too good for that.

Charming, delightful Pygmalion tale
Deborah Hale takes a bit of Pygmalion, a dash of Cinderella and adds her own special spices to create a charming and delightful story. Ms. Hale is also a virtuoso when it comes to imagery, which is always appropriate to the time period and the character's histories. A wonderful read!

Tragic Hope
This is the story of Faina, a young girl sent to live with her mother and sister, neither of whom she has ever known, while her father takes a job on an Alaskan rig to pay off gambling debts.

Faina starts off charmingly naiive, but is quickly immersed into the tragic world in which her sister and mother live. In different ways she becomes a magnet of salvation for both mother and sister, both of whom seek redemption and freedom from the choices of their past. It is truly a compelling read -- a simple story of a girl suddenly thrust into a highly unstable environment. There is not a hint of fakeness to the book. You almost want to reach out and wipe Faina's tears away with a Kleenex.

This is not at all the type of book that I usually read, but I would highly recommend it.

Please, Ms. O'Connor...write more!
A treasure of a book. O'Connor masterfully depicts the coming of age of young Faina McCoy -- at once tough and fragile.

No detail is wasted. No emotion goes untested.

O'Connor's tale of a youth exposed to the fallout of the her damaged family's reckless life choices, keeps you on the edge of your seat, fervently hoping that Faina will emerge with a happy ending to her story.

O'Connor's attention to detail allows us to immediately identify and sympathize with Faina. The author deftly depicts the cruelty of throwaway comments by those around Faina, the pressures of wanting to fit it with other preteens and having to shoulder (literally) the frailties and flaws of the family that makes it impossible to fit in anywhere. And she does so with gut-felt truthfulness and gritty accuracy.

Don't miss this wonderful novel.

Beautiful
Exquisitely written with excellent character development. You will embrace Faina in your heart. A poignant and memorable read. Looking forward to O'Connor's next novel.
