The development of a writer
This is a tremendous source work, providing a sequential study of O'Neill's development as a dramatist. While not all of the plays are particularly successful, they reveal themes and settings that would provide the foundation for the later O'Neill masterworks. And there are many wonderful early dramas, such as the four S.S. Glencairn plays, his first broadway success "Beyond the Horizon," and the daring "Anna Christie," all of which tested and expanded the dramatic form in America. A wonderful collection!

Alive, real poetry
I picked this book up by chance; I happened upon it in the library. So I took it home with a stack of other volumes of poetry. Of those five or six books, this is the only one I remember. Reading these poems is like having someone sitting in front of you weaving a story. Every sight, every sound, every movement comes alive and performs before you. And while some poets allow the beauty of their language distance you from the poem itself, Stafford relies on simple, clear, true language, such that the reader can identify similar situations and emotions in her or his own life. Even in Quiet Places is a marvelous work, simple enough for someone just delving into poetry, and with messages deep and introspective enough for a discerning reader to envelope themselves in. It's fabulous!

The Evil and the Guilty
Another great Great Books anthology! If you're like me, you'll be amazed to find yourself reading a selection from Musil's A Man without Qualities (a Big Famous Book I thought I'd never get near). I was equally surprised to find myself reading (and enjoying) the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. My book group enjoyed the shorter format of these selections - we used to read novels only, and we'd often end up meeting without everyone having finished the novel. With the Great Books anthologies, we are able to read the selection more than once and have much better discussions (plus, we only need to buy one book for six or seven meetings!). The discussion questions provided for each reading selection really help us stay on topic.

The reference in evolutionary multi-objective optimization
Evolutionary multi-objective optimization is becoming more and more used these days, and most breakthroughs in this subject can be found in these proceedings (proceedings of EMO'03 are even better than EMO'01, the program committee did a wonderful job). These are not the standard technical proceedings whose intended audience are specialists in the field, anyone with a basic knowledge of evolutionary computation can understand these papers. The proceedings begin with short tutorials explaining what EMO is and after that about the first half deals with more theoretical aspects while the second part with applications.

Reading these proceedings like a book is feasible (you may skip some papers you're not interested in) and most of the papers are very well written, so if you're interested in recent advances in EMO, reading these proceedings is almost required. The book by Kalyanmoy Deb (Multi-objective optimization using evolutionary algorithms) is nice but does not provide enough treatment from an applications perspective, but it constitutes a nice textbook to enter the subject of EMO anyway.

Both EMO2001 and 2003 proceedings are "must-read" in evolutionary multi-objective optimization !

Smart, funny humor by lesbians and gay men
Debra Waugh had a vision -- a collection of frank, heartfelt misery called "Ex-Lover Weird Shit." The book had to include writing by both lesbians and gay men. The title was set. She got the writing and cartoons, then did a superb job of choosing and editing, but no publisher would turn the collection into a book. Why, you couldn't have gay men and lesbians in the same book! -- no one would buy it. And the title had to go. How about "Ex-Lover Weird Stuff?" Shaking her head at the world's weird prejudices, Waugh formed her own publishing company, Two Out of Three Sisters Press (TOOTS), and produced a marvel. If a lover has ever broken up with you, buy this book. Never mind your sexual preference. For some kinds of pain, laughter -- especially combined with plain clear good writing -- is the only drug that works. Not for nothing did one of Waugh's ex-lovers remark on the back cover, "I don't think this book is very funny."

Definitive Exercise Physiology Text of the 20th Century
It is perhaps appropriate that at the culmination of the 20th century, some of the most eminant exercise physiologists have been brought together to author what is surely the definitive exercise physiology text of our time. Unlike previous volumes of "Handbook of Physiology" which have investigated exercise physiology for each of the various systems (e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory etc), this text provides a complete and integrated overview of the entire body's physiological response to physical stress. Each chapter is authored by scientists who have not only made a significant contribution to their respective fields of speciality over the last few decades, but in most cases remain at the forefront of present day research. As such each section provides an unparalleled depth of review and extensive bibliography. Given the quality of each chapter it would be remiss of me to single out any particular section, but it should be said that this text is an essential addition to any serious exercise physiology library. Whilst the detail is challenging for undergraduate students, this text should become the ideal reference tool for postgraduate students and researchers world-wide.

Inglan is a bitch

Inglan is a bitch
dere's no runnin' whey fram it.

Linton Kwesi Johnson's is just one of the many perspectives on England collected together in Extravagant Strangers: A Literature of Belonging. As the title implies, the contributors come from "outside" of Britain. Johnson was born in Jamaica, and there are pieces by Rudyard Kipling and William Makepeace Thackeray (both born in India); Trinidadian V.S. Naipaul; New Zealander Katherine Mansfield; early slave narratives by Olaudah Equiano, Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, and Ignatius Sancho. There are also entries from the latest crop of non-British-born writers such as Salman Rushdie, Kazuo Ishiguro, and William Boyd, to name just a few. Edited by Caryl Phillips--himself an outsider, born in the West Indies--the collection attempts to identify just what it means to be British. As he writes in his introduction, "For British writers not born in Britain, the question of 'belonging' surfaces in their work in a variety of ways.... However, out of the tension between the individual and his or her society--in this case British--the finest writing is often produced."

Phillips points out that race, class, gender, and historical circumstances also affect the writer--obviously, the freed slave Ukawsaw Gronniosaw coming to England in the early 17th century would have a far different experience than the Anglo-Indian Kipling in the 19th century or the Japanese-born Ishiguro in the 20th. Nevertheless, there is something universal about all the experiences and observations noted here--from Thackeray's satirical exposé of British snobbery, "A Word About Dinners," to V.S. Naipaul's account of his first visit to England during which he "lost the gift of fantasy, the dream of the future, the far-off place where I was going." Extravagant Strangers is a fascinating exploration of British culture across time, race, and gender. It's also a terrific sampler of great writing, one that shouldn't be missed. --Alix Wilber

Superb! Wonderful! Challenges Eurocentric hegemony
This excellent compendium is a must for all those readers who *think* they know what it means to be British: i.e., white and middle class, and usually male. Phillips has elsewhere written about V S Naipaul, and has exposed him as something of an enemy of those who are suffering the pangs of diaspora. We must remember that Phillips is much more radical and challenges assumptions, much as Rushdie does. This wonderful book needs to be found in all libraries, *including yours*.
