The Little Book of Comfort
I was given this book by a Friend when my husband died suddenly and unexpectantly. I gained great comfort and peace from this little book and I then sent it to a friend just recently who had also lost her husband. I highly recommend this book for the comfort it gives.

I send this book in lieu of flowers...
When my daughter was killed I was inundated with inspirational, uplifting books. I was in great pain, not ready to be uplifted. Someone who knew me well gave me this one.

It is full of poetry & prose about how I was really feeling, not how I SHOULD be feeling. It made me cry a lot, which was the best thing in the world to be doing in the beginning. I was reminded over & over again by characters from the Bible, from the classics, from every walk of life, that I was not the first person to feel this way. It reassured me that I was in stellar company, King David to C.S. Lewis, & I too would recover. I carried it with me for more than a year. Better than a live-in "shrink."

Great Stuff!!
All of my friends love it! My little sister even stole my first edition from me..so i had to buy another. A lot of short humorous poetry..a few examples: Exactitude, Dear, shows whats true, Precisely, in all cases: I quantify my love for you Down to 16 decimal places

The dance floors bare, the band is gone: Listen honey: theyre playing our song

those arent even my favorites...just what i happened to open the book too...REALLY great stuff

This is what poetry should be!
I thoroughly enjoyed David's talent and wit! None of his poems are like the typical rubbish that's frequently labeled poetry these days. No esoteric BS that only the author can relate to.

Simply lovely
Robert Lax,who died late last year back in his "home" of Olean,N.Y.,was a writer of spare, minimalist poetry and prose.Lauded by his comtempories{writers as diverse as Levertov,Kerouac,Maxwell and Thomas Merton considered him an absolutelt essential poet}He writes about the Large{the title piece, a reworking of the intoduction to the Gospel of John} to colors. He work is so spare that it becomes meditative. In the early 1960's Lax moved to the island of Patmos, and began life as a hermit. His speech{and poerty }became even more lean, essentially stripping away whatever he viewed as accretion. One poem written like a cascading waterfall, simply spells out colors. His greatest work, the circus of the sun, is reprinted here in part. Lax travelled with a canadian circus for awhile, and viewed the circus, metaphorically, as life. This volume is rounded out with some dairies he keopt in the mid 60's on the Greek Islands. I believe that generations to come will view him as one of the great poets of the century. For that he certainly was. An essential volume!

Quiet as expressed in words
This book describes silence in gorgeous prose and poetry. I recommend it to anyone who loves the sound and feel of the written word and the sound and feel of quiet.

If you are a romantic, read this book.
I received this book as a birthday present. I simply loved diving into the pages. Each poem captured my interest. I found myself memorizing a dozen of the poems. I would definitely consider this book to be a worthwhile investment.

If you are in love, read this book
This is a beautiful book of well selected works for anyone who celebrates love. There are many classics here as well as many not so well known, but equally beautiful selections. Read it with your lover.

Some of the topics really touch home.
After reading a few poems by Jim Daniels, I became curious as to his motivation and if the poems reflected his personal experiences. My interpretive writing teacher, Boyd C. Allen, was able to have him speak to my class. After he read a few of his digger poems, someone asked if digger was a real person. Jim Daniels replied, "mostly." He told us that he composed digger from many people he knew and from many personal experiences, but where it sounds really good, that is where Jim Daniels would improvise and exaggerate his story a bit to make it sound better. For the most part, his poems were written from personal experiences, or at least what he remembers from them. That is what makes his poems so real and great. He is showing that he is just one of us.

A great depiction of black life in Detroit.
Actually, reading this book of poems has me asking the question; Is Mr Daniels using his personal experience about his black life in Pittsburg?

Making More Waves : New Writing by Asian American Women

Hailing by lineage or immigration from Asian posts such as Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Korea, Vietnam, and India, the contributors to Making More Waves are as well known as Lisa See (On Gold Mountain) and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni (The Mistress of Spices ), and as new to print as 16-year-old poet Juno Parrenas. The story "Summer of My Korean Soldier" and the essay "Hambun-Hambun" neatly mirror one another, and illustrate an experience shared by all of these writers: the sense of being an outsider. In polished or jagged prose, the authors recount their lives and dig into feminist issues such as violence against women in war and peacetime, sexuality, and the nexus of race, class, and gender. They deftly explore how being Asian in America shapes such concerns and casts up others.

Excellent Read!!!
I bought a copy of "Making Waves" by the same authors. It was a powerful book, to say the least. I really admired the honesty by all of the Asian American ladies that contributed to the book.
This book, which is the follow-up, is also a powerful book, too. You see, even though I'm a Caucasian male, I'm a Christian and an ordained minister. Most of the ministry and worship I do is with Asian Americans(most of the are college age and young adult). Since I didn't grow up Asian, this book and its predecessor were a valuable resource to me.
After seeing this book, I'm more sympathetic to the struggles that Asian Americans go through, and especially the females. Too often Hollywood and the Far Eastern Movie companies have portrayed Asian Females as the sultry and sexy "Gesha Girl" stereotype. This book lets the ladies speak and takes the reader into their hearts and minds. It lets the reader know what they've actually been through, what they struggle with(and still do), and what they do to surivive. I'm glad they've shared what they did. I think it's long overdue that their voices were heard.
I would reccommend this book to anyone doing ministry to Asian American females as I do or to any male dating or married to an Asian American female. Praise God for Elaine Kim and the Asian Women United!

~*~ a thick chunk of asian heritage ~*~
i suppose you expect a formal review of some sort, but i'm just writing something freshly thought out:

i LOVE this book! it's pretty rare to discover asian american works of writing published in today's world. It iincludes stories, essays, poems, photography, and pictures of artwork done as well.

Anyone who is interested in heritage, asian american literature, or just would like a good collection of writing to read, i highly reccomend this book.

A Great Book
This book was truly wonderful. It had Grimm and Anderson, but it also had L. Frank Baum, Robin McKinley (!), Charlotte Bronte, George Macdonald and a lot more. It had old fairy tales and new ones. It is out of print, unfortunately, but it is definately worth tracking down.

The Mammoth Book of Fairy Tales
A wonderful collection of fairy tales from throughout the ages. The Grimms of course are represented but many lesser known authors such as Isabel Bellerby,Lord Brabourne, and Netta Syrett. Many contemporary authors are also included,Tanith Lee, Robin McKinley, Jane Yolen. A good collection for anyone with a love of fairy tales, highly recommended.
