Advice on everything from keeping a checkbook to car buying.
This book's subtitle, "The Essential Money Skills You Need to Make It on Your Own," is an apt description of its contents. So many kids graduate college without a clue about handling money, and get deeper and deeper into debt as the years go on.

Leftovers No More...
The HC version of this book (First Edition) was given to me by my (at the time new) mother-in-law. She enjoyed using it and thought that it would be a good "starter" book for me - that was 26 years ago! I have since collected over 75 cookbooks but still find that I keep going back to this little gem. I work a full week, have 2 teenagers and a hubby to keep fed and this book always has something quick and easy to prepare when the cupboards are starting to get bare 'cause we're all to busy to go shopping! The book's index is arranged around what kind of leftover or "nothing in the house but" items you may have in the cupboard or fridge then all you have to do is pick one of the recipes that appeals to you. Simple, quick, easy and delicious - certainly better than take out all the time....

excellent advice
Written in 1982, this book was given to me as a Christmas gift back in 1984, so it came as somewhat of a surprise when I found it on our required reading list when I was studying personal finance with Primerica in 1995. The book is absolutely full of outstanding advice and is written so that the average reader can comprehend it. One of the areas that I was especially impressed with was the keen insight on life insurance. Yes, dull, boring life insurance. If you are still into any type of whole or universal life policy, you need to read this book. If you are planning your finances, I believe there are many books out there that are fine, but this is one of the few that really gives proper attention to a very important part of your financial picture. It is out of print right now, but if you can get your hands on a copy, the info is still quite relevant for today's readers.

The Power of Money: Coinage and Politics in the Athenian Empire

How to Do History
The Power of Money (I suspect the title is the fault of the editor or publisher) deals with the Athenian Coinage Decree. When Athens controlled much of the greek world it promulgated a law restricting coinage in silver, requiring foreign coin to be converted to the Athenian standard. The decree survives in fragments of carvings and there is a reference to it in a play by Aristophanes. Figueira analyzes whether we can know when the law was in effect, how widely and if it was enforced. The evidence is scientific, that is, what inferences are drawn are based on logical study of evidence. There are the textual variants of the law, where they are found, when they may be dated. There are coin hoards which show whether there is a hiatus in non-Athenian silver coinage, etc. Figueira is able to touch on peripheral subjects such as the problem of correlating a silver/electrum exchange ratio.I recommend this book to students of history, numismatists, and anyone who wants to know how history is 'done.' The narratives of our commonly-accepted history are not the constructs of power or class. They are based on scraps of evidence that may seem dry and boring but which yield treasures when studied calmly and logically. This book is an antidote to the radical aporia and solipsism induced by postmoderism and its works.

Prosperity Aerobics
Bayer's book is one of the wisest books concerning the issue of money I've ever read. He writes about prosperity with great humor and depth. The exercises are deceptively simple, yet transformative. I found myself tapping into new energies that went beyond the sphere of money.

Good book that based on academic research, not latest fads
If you're looking for clever tricks to get rich quick, forget this book. It's focus is on the steady accumulation and growth of capital, the approach with by far the highest success rate. Actually, if you think you can outpick the market, you really owe it yourself to read this first. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than being wrong about investment decisions.

For me, reading this was an eye openning experience. The book is solidly based on academic research, and essentially proves that attempts to time the markets and pick the perfect stock are largely futile. In essence, research shows that for every person who timed the market perfectly ten times in a row, someone else timed exactly wrong ten times in a row. The only difference between the two is that the second guy didn't get anybody to come to his seminars.

Good explanations, and a clear presentation of the economics of investing. Combine this with practical advice on building a portfolio for the long haul. Great stuff.

BTW, I made a fair amount of money picking stocks before I read this book. I now realize I was just lucky and any stock picking I do now is just a fun hobby. To make money, I follow the book.
