Cajun Household Wisdom: "You Know You Still Alive If It's Costin' You Money!"
Published in Hardcover by Longmeadow Press (January, 1995)
Author: Kenneth Aguillard Atchity
Amazon base price: $10.95
Used price: $6.64
Average review score:

De longest distance between two points is trew de dance hall
Atchity knows what he's talking about. The pithy sayings herein have been collected over a lifetime, not only from the kitchens where big family dinners were eaten, but the back porches where some of the best talking happened after the cousins had gone home. Spelling-wise, he sets down the collected sayings mostly as his ear caught them and how they're pronounced in French Louisiana (e.g. sha instead of the French cher). He throws in a small glossary at the end of the book, and where the sayings need extra context (not often), adds a little commentary.

"If he's so smart, how come he allays has sumptin' ta do?"

"You in big trouble w'en you have ta apologize foh bein' yo'self."

"You doan got ta look too much below de surface if you got enough surface." (With a short paragraph explaining how in rice farming country, land doesn't have to have gold in it or oil under it; a lot of land in itself is good.)

"Dere got ta be sumptin' ta him - 'cause nobody laks him."

"She's as noivous as de cat in a room full of rockers."

"Doan waste yo' time wid little t'oughts. Scare yo'self big!"

Not that the book is *just* family wisdom; Atchity alternates batches of sayings with small primers about the Cajun way, as well as some candid photos. :) "How Dey Got Dis-A-Way" (just what it says, which also points out that "Creole" is defined one way in South Louisiana where Atchity was born, and another way in New Orleans - and that New Orleans is distinct from 'South Louisiana'.). In "Learning the Ropes", Atchity illustrates a typical characteristic (doing everything 'in a way 10 times harder than necessary') with his mother's long fight to bring in a catfish - and she *still* hadn't brought a net (photo to prove that it took 3 of her lures). "A Happy Death" (at Jax Brewery) is a good story. "Vivre Pour Manger: Live to Eat" (love that Cajun food), "Life Preservers in the Sea of Stories" (Churchill *stole* that alligator story!), and "Poetic Justice" ('nother good funny story).

Intellectual Capital Review
It is interesting in today's world to see books that remond us all the present and future value of intellectual capital. It is unfortunate the book does not focus on the de-valuation of intellectual capital when downsizing occurs in an organisation. The cost of replacing the intellectual capital does never figure in anual reports, it is 'hidden' by other standard costs, such as employee related costs, equipments, etc. We need to establish a quantification method, so that intellectual capital replacement is thoroughly investigated.

Cash Is Still King
Published in Hardcover by Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers (November, 2000)
Author: Keith Checkley
Amazon base price: $55.00
Used price: $29.99
Average review score:

Highly Recommended!
Keith Checkley believes in a simple premise: Cash flow is the heart of business. It is also the heart of his new book, a sequel to 1995's Cash is King. Using a detailed and exhaustive discussion of the cash-flow cycle as his springboard, Checkley leaps into the depths of business strategy, product development and restructurings. Just when it's all getting a bit too deep, he surfaces with penetrating case studies from companies like Dell. We at getAbstract recommend this book to financial and non-financial pros alike, all of whom will benefit from its succinct definitions of finance terms and its clear explanation of critical mathematic formulas. While many business and management books suffer from a lack of hard fact and applicability, Checkley gives you the numbers, or more importantly, he gives you the knowledge you need to crunch your own.

Absolutely Necessary!
What great timing for CNBC to come out with this classy and colorful guide to the fundamentals of investing! The rules have changed and there's nothing like CNBC to provide a back to basics approach that reminds you about the risks and potential rewards of the market. I just got my copy a few days ago and have already referred to it numerous times.

Publisher's Comments
Thirty five papers from a variety of intellectual journals trace fifty years of distinguished service to psycho-analysis, sociology, politics and anthropology. The author of such well known books as "Superstition and Society" (Hogarth, 1939)." Psychoanalysis and Politics" (Duckworth, 1951) AND "Man's Picture of his World" (Duckworth, 1961) has embodied in his experience and thought the history of psychoanalysis to date. Having been analysed by Freud, Ernest Jones and Melanie Klein at different periods of his scientific development in more recent years he has taken full account of the work of W. R. Bion. Mr. Money-Kyrle's wide and varied experience of people, places and modes of thought have made him a unique figure bridging the often isolated worlds of psychoanalysis, politics, philosophy and social sciences. A vivid and entertaining autobiographic sketch traces his development in this volume, Which also contain such famous papers as "The Psychology of Propaganda", "Psycho-anlysis and Ethics", "Normal Counter-transference and Some of its Deviations", "Cognitive Development" and "The Aims of Psychoanalysis".
