Lower Your Expenses, Increase and Keep Your Income
The book provides a down-to-earth, common-sense approach to building a financial nest-egg and maintaining it efficiently. The book does not only teach you how to create wealth, but among other "reality checks" embedded throughout the book, the author reminds you that increasing your income is not always the key to getting control of your finances. But controlling your finances simply requires you to live within your means -- I like that! Therefore, I recommend this book highly for anybody who wants to lower expenses, while at the same time increase and keep her/his income through the use of easy, common-sense strategies.

Affirmations Your Passport to Prosperity/Money
This is the best book I have ever read on using the affirmation process to bring money into one's life. It is so easy to read and understand. I enjoyed the simple exercises and methods outlined in the book to attract and keep money.

I especially like the Millionaire's Hall of Fame section and the Big Money To Me Now Method, which is quite unique.

I am purchasing extra copies for my friends for birthday and everyday gifts.

This book should be in every library, bookstore and home in the country.

The Scholar Beachbum, The Truth, and Ornette Coleman
When a friend gave me "All The Money In The World" by John Menaghan as a birthday gift, I planned little more than to give it a comfortable home in the 'Unread Book" section of my bookcase. I have never gravitated to poetry -I like Donald Hall, Wallace Stevens, Seamus Heaney, Shel Silverstein, Bob Dylan, and Lorenz Hart, and that's about it. Only because it is a thin book that fit into my jacket pocket did I even bother to take it on the subway.

Good decision.

By now I estimate that I have read "The Truth"(p. 24)aloud to no fewer than fifteen friends. In a style early in the poem that reads like equal parts Mamet and Auster, the writer sets a table (literally) of complicated relationships that almost makes you squirm for the participants. "This is the way it's supposed to be" seems about five area codes and three layers from "the truth" about the situation, yet it seems about as close as anyone should venture at this dinner.

"Farewell"(p. 21) had the power in its choice of words and images to physically make me feel pain for anyone who could write this. The walk in the fog at midnight, all the while picturing his pregnant ex-wife asleep with her new husband, takes most readers' emotional rock-bottoms, sees them, and raises them. There are some nights when the best you can do is keep from crying again, when you are saved by some lyrics that float through your head and the thought that someone else (probably with a rhyming dictionary) has made it out the other side. The writer's style is almost like that off an old song in its ability to put the reader (at least me) back into the emotion of his experiences with which I relate.

The major revelation, however, is Section III, which Menaghan devotes to both jazz and specific jazz musicians. More than simply being clinical pieces about the music, the poems read with a certain musicality. It reads for me as though the time signatures and notes of sheet music are there in an overlay. The lines of the Bix poem ("Like a Girl Saying Yes"), "Yet anything they played" and "You played right back," extend a word onto the next line, giving a sense of playing just ahead and lagging just behind the beat. In "Bags" one can almost hear the elegance of the MJQ, with the words and spacing reminding us of Milt Jackson's deliberate style that was his signature.

I could go on ("My Father In The Backyard" - Wow), but I have hit the wall anything remsembling a coherent review about poetry long ago. The best thing about this collection is that it was such an unexpected treat and that it makes itself accessible for its readers on so many levels. The description of one solitary Miles Davis note ("so cold it burns, so high it never falls") made it worth the trip. I suspect that there are similar simple yet brilliant moments in this book for many readers.

All the Pain That Money Can Buy
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Pub (28 February, 1993)
Author: William Wright
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Poor little rich girl
William Wright's charting of the life and sadnesses of the late Christina Onassis makes compulsive reading. A wealth of detail is coupled with a racy narrative style to produce a book that is for once, in that much overused phrase, unputdownable.

It would be easy to dismiss Christina as an empty-headed, affluent and cocooned woman. What Wright does is to shine a light into all the corners of this complex woman's life - her battles with the megalomaniac shipping tycoon who was her father, the war which ensued with Onassis's last wife the profligate Jackie Kennedy, her failed attempts at love and acceptance and the volatile dynamic that made up the Onassis clan - while allowing Christina to emerge as a vulnerable and very human figure and not the spoiled, hedonistic brat of popular acceptance.

A riveting read of unusual dimensions - the glitz and glamour more the habitat of Jackie Collins suffused with a bible-black Greek tragedy - a tragedy that was to cast its shadow across the entire Onassis dynasty and which threatens to darken Christina's daughter Athina, the richest little girl in the world.
