Fun!
This book has been a great step-by-step guide to getting financially organized. It's geared to average working-class folks, not aspiring accountants and brokers. The author's humorous approach makes the material accessible and interesting!

The book begins with steps to determine where your money goes, then works through ways to eliminate debt, plan for emergencies, and invest money for various purposes: retirement, college, and other large expenses. The book also includes advice for buying insurance and completing your taxes.

The book is a beginner's guide, not an exaustive reference -- so don't expect to find all the information you need if you want to invest in individual stocks or understand each line of your tax return. Rather, it gives clear advice to new investors through commonsense arguments that require almost no background information.

Only two complaints: First, health insurance is not discussed. Some advice on such an important kind of insurance would have been very helpful to me. Second, the authors repeatedly advertise their website. (To their credit, the website ...is a pretty good resource. You might want to try it before you get the book or even instead of the book. It has free trial membership as of this writing.)

Fun & Informative
06/10/03 I like this book so far. I love the way it's written it gets you in the good mood for financial planning. It has me excited about learning how to manage my money.

It does not make you feel like you are going to deal with a seroius & tedious issue. I look foward to doing this. I feel like this is going to be fun especially with the jokes. It sometimes catches you off guard.

So far I give it 5 stars I will come back & update this later...

Freud saw money primarily as a fecal symbol: something to hoarded, treasured, and counted. That probably says more about Freud and the times he lived in than money. A more modern and accurate interpretation of money would be as a symbol of fertility and potency. So perhaps it is no coincidence that until the arrival of Tina Brown in 1992, The New Yorker never ran cartoons about sex. On the other hand, an astonishing 25 per cent of the 13,000 cartoons it has run since 1986 have been about money.

In his introduction to The New Yorker Book of Money Cartoons, Christopher Buckley, editor of Forbes FYI magazine, calls the cartoonists' obsession with business and money as a "sublimation" of this forbidden subject. One cartoon even shows two New Yorkers walking the streets surrounded by signs for money on the shops, billboards, buildings, vendors' umbrellas, and cars. "Remember a few years ago when everything was sex, sex, sex?" says one to the other. Another shows a couple standing at the entrance to a sumptuous living room. "See," says the man, "isn't this better than being happy?"

Of course American culture in general, and New York life in particular, has always been obsessed with money as an index of success, while other, older cultures such as the U.K. at least have a class system to fall back on. Nonetheless, this charming and relevant collection of cartoons will ring bells with anyone who has ever striven in the world of mammon. It's not so much the sort of book you would buy yourself, but it would be a real pleasure to give and to receive. --Alex Benady

"Three wishes less commission." -- the good fairy
I first discovered The New Yorker when I was a teenager. When I saw how many people subscribed to the magazine, I started asking people why they did. Inevitably, the answer was, "For the cartoons." Since then, I have come to realize that The New Yorker is like the hall of fame for cartoonists.

Now, subscriptions to The New Yorker are pretty expensive, so your cost per cartoon can be hefty. Buy this book, and slash your cost per cartoon while increasing your laughs per minute!

Seriously (no kidding), this volume is well done. It leads off with a very witty essay about money from Christopher Buckley of Forbes FYI who introduces some of the cartoons.

As well drawn as these 110 classic cartoons are, you'll find that many of them work as quips. "I married you for your money, Leonard. Where is it?"

The pursuit of money is always tinged with concern about what one is giving up to get it. "Well, anyhow, it sure is handy having my broker right here in my cell."

Money can be a distressing subject as well, too delicate for the dinner table. "Must you tell us our daily share of the national debt every time we sit down to dinner?"

Money is an important subject. One that often comes up in families at other times. "Your mother called to remind you to diversify," says secretary to the executive.

The dog's eye view is helpful also, as one pooch says to the other, "Let's face it -- man's best friend is money."

The challenges of having enough money can bring us all up short. Like the man addressing the bank teller said, "I'd like to bounce a check."

It's no wonder that money has been such a constant source of cartoons in The New Yorker. By putting many of the best ones in this fine book, you'll have a good cross section of the best New Yorker cartoons in recent years.

Have a good laugh! Then stop to think about what stalled thinking you may have about money. Then think about how you could change your beliefs about money to have a better life.

Find that person who dislikes cartoons, they gotta be dead.
As a former business owner, I found that those without a sence of humor soon lost money.

Here is a book of cartoons that will help most everyone laugh, maybe even those on the way to their best tax haven (page 13),or those who want to discuss the portfolio losses with their broker (page 96). There is also some excellent advice to use when responding to those unwanted cold calls (page 46).

Yes, I do like cartoons. With this book you can become a very good "money person".

It is bound to bring many laughs, today, tomorrow and in much of the future!

Money is so much more than green paper
You can (and probably should) read classic personal finance tomes such as "Get a Financial Life", "Debt-Free Before 30" but you can hardly apply the advice in these books till you've read "Our Money Ourselves" and figured out what is blocking you from saving and investing your cash -- it has little to do with the actual amount of cash you have!

Besides offering purchasing power, money is a symbol, a means to an end ... and those symbols and ends are different for everyone. "Our Money Ourselves" makes everyone, especially women, reexamine and redesign their attitudes and relationship with money in order to make wise decisions with it.

It's like spring cleaning your home after 30 years.
I have gotten more insight and more deep revelations with this book than any other. I've read Think and Grow Rich, The Richest Man in Babylon, Money 101, The Meaning of Money, Money and Spirituality, and of course 9 Steps to Financial Freedom and none have even approached digging out the deep root of self sabotoge than this book. 9 Steps has been great for the practical stuff. But OurMoney Ourselves unearths the hidden insects, bulbs and weedy roots that hinder a bountiful harvest. A must companion volume to 9 Steps to Financial Freedom and A Courage to be Rich (both by Suze Ohrman). If you can only get one, start with this book. It will prepare the soil for the seeds of 9 Steps to take root.

Our Wildest Dreams has the "new" right stuff
I connected with the words of Joline Godfrey. Her evaluation on what women are doing in business, helps all of us see the opportunities to do things differently. The first chapter where she talks about the right stuff struck home - women needing connection with others, seeing people as whole individuals, wanting balance in life, seeing business as a creative outlet, are all principles she dives into - they make sense for those seeking to more than financial goals. There are many bottom lines in life - the women business owners the book reviews get it and are designing business with a bigger picture in mind. Thank you Joline for shifting my thinking - I was already headed in that direction - your book help me get there a little faster.

Inspirational
This book was a life changer for me. My entire paradygm shifted about my own potential to be an entrepreneur after reading this book. It was instrumental in my decision to leave my public school teaching position and start my own business. I found the specific stories of women's successes and struggles encouraging. I had often given up on ideas once problems started to arise, but after reading this book, I adopted the mantra "Every problem has a solution." It has helped me through many a seemingly crisis situation. I have reread it several times. The most valuable piece for me was the perspective that we women can do something that we love, have fun AND make a living. My husband also enjoyed this book, so it's not just for women.

A readable and thorough introduction to fixed income markets
Extremely readable. One could read this book in a single sitting and get a great jumpstart to an understanding of fixed income markets - the why and the how.

Wiseman has an engaging style of writing which prevents the stifled yawns normally associated with reading this genre, and keeps one turning the pages...

The book nicely covers the fundamental theory of why there exists a fixed income market, then turns to the players and discusses what they do, and finally covers some of the fundamental trading strategies and math employed to turn a buck.

Nice one...

i could not put this book down
i found this book very well written. It provides detail and yet covers that what it says it does. I find that Wiseman explains concepts in a verystraight forward way. Although i had to pause to eat and think about some of the financial products discussed such as "par yields". I found I was able to understand the book. The book contains some of the trader jargon and a outline of the players involved in the market. I think that anyone who wants to something with securities or trading should read this, before/during/after an intership. As the english say "Wiseman" is the dogs ballocks!! get this book!

Question and Answer Book of Money and Investing
Published in Paperback by DIANE Publishing Co (July, 1995)

Excellent Beginner's Book
This is a great starter guide for someone who is starting out in investments. I bought this book just before opening my first online trading account and it helped me a great deal. The book is in the form of questions and answers. It is almost like an extended dictionary where you can look up all your investment bases. The book covers stock, mutual funds, bonds, options and futures, retirement planning, estate planning, insurance and annuities. It has questions like:
-What is a sell stop limit order?
-How will earnings per share make me money?
-How does dollar cost averaging work?
-What are zero-coupon bonds?
-What is a NIV in mutual funds?
-What are the benefits of an annuity?
-What is a 403(b) retirement plan?

Great book that is simple and concise
This book does a brilliant job of categorizing the basics of money and investing. Simply answering complex questions when it comes to Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, Retirement, and more, I have found this book indispensible when it comes to explaining to others about the basics of investing. It is a MUST read for any investor who is completely clueless when it comes to investing.
