Money Made Simple
Straight forward (easy) approach to managing money. Stock Brokers and other investment professionals are going to hate this book because it shows you how to invest wisely and cut out their fees. You get to keep the difference! Oh, some pretty good humor too. Buy it, read it, and prosper.

GREAT ideas about living well, retiring young.
Money Made Simple is a plain English guide for normal people with normal incomes, if there is such a thing, to make the most of what they have, and turn it into something more over time. The book has great tips that anyone can follow about getting out of debt, where to invest, minimizing tax liability, finding hidden bargains and all kinds of ways to save and make money. But the best part is it's FUN to read. It's very conversationally written, it's humorous, and it skewers a lot of the mumbo jumbo so many of the so-called experts will use to convince you that you can't possibly grow some wealth out of an average income without some hired gun expert to show you the way.

This book should be required reading for anyone who ever wonders where the money went at the end of the month, or how the heck they're ever going to retire or pay for the kids to go to school. I told my wife that if I keel over from a heart attack or get run over by a truck tomorrow, all she needs to do is read this book and follow its advice, and she and the kids will be fine, financially at least.

The author, Stacy Johnson, is a CPA and former securities salesman who now does syndicated personal finance reporting for about 90 TV stations across the country. He really does have some great "inside knowledge," particularly about bad investments to stay away from (things he used to sell), and the holes in the wonderful-sounding sales pitches you'll hear if you're looking for the right place to grow some money.

(Disclosure: I'm the news director at one of the TV stations that airs Stacy's reports. I buy Stacy's TV news reports to air on my station. I met him once at a convention for about three minutes, and I speak with him by phone two or three times a year for a minute or two at a time, but we're not acquaintances otherwise. I have no financial interest in the success of Stacy's book, and he's not cutting my station any special deal to say nice things about him here.)

Stacy shows how to organize your finances, and keep things simple without creating a bunch of extra work. In fact, he shows how you'll probably spend less time being organized than you do being disorganized. And you can jump right in on Day One and do the things he recommends. He doesn't advise you to become an expert at picking stocks or anything like that. Just the opposite, in fact. He's specific. He names names, telling which companies he does business with, and why, and he tells you some to stay away from. Which insurance coverages are redundant (or just a terribly bad deal), and ways to cut middlemen out of transactions. All kinds of great stuff like that in a whole bunch of categories ... retirement plans, real estate, vehicles, vacations and more.

And best of all, unlike SO MANY of the other finance books I've read, he's not trying to sell you anything else. He does mention another book he wrote a time or two when he lifts a quote from it, but that's it. He doesn't try to push you to a website to buy a bunch of pamphlets and guides and books and games and whatever. You buy the book and the information's there. Nothing held back to get you to buy something else.

You'll save more than the cost of the book within 24 hours of reading it, and if you stick with it, it really could change your life. I'm really sold on it and taking the time to write this review because it makes great sense, and I really think it can help a lot of people. Get it!

Advice from your broker? Get a second opinion...yours!
Super topic and super read. Stacy provides an intuitive, easily digested work that takes it back to the basics, reminding me that yeah, I probably know more about investing FOR ME than those I pay to advise me. Finally, someone in the industry willing to say: "the emperor has no clothes." I found insight and critiques here that restored confidence in my own investment strategies; confidence that my broker...for a commission...had effectively taken away. Stacy playfully frolics through the topic, and yet left me with insight I didn't realize I was gaining as I read. The book was, essentially, "interactive", making me smile, nod and comment/laugh out loud as I went (much to my children's amusement). It reads with the ease of idle and comedic "chit chat" among good friends, and yet effectively dissipates the "smoke and mirrors" of financial marketeers. Two parts wisdom and one part irreverence, mixed well, made for a fun and very snappy read.

Grisham goes business
I just read this book. I loved it. I love Grisham (although his latest books are average) and one could say that Grisham is to lawyers what Binham is to businessmen.

But don't fear, you dont have to be a trader or business expert to enjoy this book. You will learn a bunch about those high-adrenalin jobs and find yourself swept into an exciting money race. The son with the most money gets Daddy's big fortune. Who will get it and how? Watch them rise and fall and rise again.

I also enjoyed the little romance bits and the moral dilemna. You just can help beeing hooked to the characters and will despise some of their acts. Highly fun and entertaining. Give yourself a threat and read this book. I just ordered his second book and will check my mailbox every day from now on :)

The greatest winner takes all book ever written
This is honestly one of the best books I have ever read. The plot is sensational, basically a rich tycoon dies and to inherit his vast fortune his three sons who have basically just been spoilt rich kids and never worked a day in their lives must earn at least one million pounds from nothing in three years. Only one of them can inherit the money, winner takes all. Meanwhile their sister who has been left a place on a secretarial course from her father's will must look after their mother who has become a vegetable through shock of the will's contents so all the moral questions of diverting funds they have made to help their struggling sister are tackled along with morals in making money.

Each brother is completely different personality wise and you actually learn a fair bit about running businesses, share trading and everything else along the way. You get addicted to these characters and will not be able to put this book down. It is a riveting read. I honestly hadn't heard of Harry Bingham as an author before this but he's up there with James Patterson, Dean Koontz and other masters of thrillers.

Absolutely Fantastic
I was thrilled to see a book that teaches children about the value of money. It is extremely well written and the colorful illustrations kept my three year old nephew wanting to read more and more the book.

Money Mama to the Rescue!
Money Mama and her three little piggies make the concept of saving as easy as 10/10/10/70! This great little book is beautifully designed, well-written and features bold, colorful illustrations that will immediately appeal to children AND parents alike.

My daughter, like most children, learned her bad spending and non-existent saving habits from her parents, (who learned their bad spending and non-existent saving habits from THEIR parents.) It's a destructive cycle that needed breaking, but I wasn't sure how to do it. Enter: "Money Mama & The Three Little Pigs". I learned about this excellent book (and companion piggy bank) from a friend (who showed me HERS!) I was so captivated by the simplicity with which the daunting subjects of "giving", "investing", and "saving" were communicated, that I HAD to buy a copy for myself and my daughter. By breaking the process down into bite-sized pieces, I learned that anyone can benefit from the lessons taught in the book -- no matter how large or small the amount of money, success can begin with one little dollar.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who has kids and struggles with the subject of saving! You're never too old to learn the invaluable lessons outlined in the book, and I give Ms. Mackey two thumbs WAY up for her ingenous and innovative presentation of a complex subject. This is the gift that keeps on giving (and saving and investing) -- I'm glad I got mine before they ran out! :-)

review from zephyrhills
excellent read for all women and some men my name is sybil gordon. i am visiting my friend, carol, in n.y. and she is given me a crash course in computer use.

This book discusses women's spiritual and financial values.
Jo Ann Lordahl's book offers a thought-provoking quotation for each day of the year, providing insights for women who are interested in personal growth and financial wellness. This book is relevant for all women in today's world. Each daily quote is paired with an inspirational affirmation, many of which are interwoven with wise and practical advise about money management. The overall message of this book is that women can and must create prosperity and financial security for themselves, improve their relationship with money, and learn to balance attitudes toward money with spiritual values. These intriguing daily readings guide the reader in looking at her own self, and in understanding her goals, values, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses as they apply to spending habits, earning potential, and financial worth.

In this book there is no emphasis on consumerism, greed, materialism, or conversely, poverty. The book includes no get-rich-quick schemes. It offers both enjoyable and beneficial reading for any woman who would like to get a new perspective on money and set some achievable financial goals.

It is written, organized, and executed at perfect pitch and should be read by anyone considering taking the plunge into entrepreneurship, pursuing a career as a VC, or simply wanting to know more about the complexities and true nature of venture capital.

As venture capital gradually becomes more plentiful in the next 24 months, reviewing this work should be required of serious-minded professionals.

Absolutely Phenomenal Book
I can't say enough good things about this book! Gompers and Lerner provide a crystal clear explaination of the role venture capital plays in the economy and offers an insightful view of how venture capital will change in the future.

Anyone who is launching a new venture should bypass the "How To Write A Business Plan" books and pick up a copy.

a MUST HAVE, my sisters!
i am a recent duke grad with a fulbright scholarship and vanity fair pr associate title under my belt, but nothing has prepared me for 'real life' information like jones' "the money rules". i went to a prestigious all-girls private school for 12 years and never once did anyone mention finance. jones spells it out for us (women of all ages- it's never too late to get financially literate), giving us a comprehensive summary of life lessons she's had to learn first hand. she's cool and tells it like it is. it made me so aware of my spending patterns; there was this black void whenever i tried to put the concept of finance in perspective so i would just ignore it and figure it would all sort itself out. jones has taught me what i need to do to take my life- my future- into my own hands financially. i read it in 2 hours and it was the best investment i've made in a long time. read this book ladies- the cinderella complex is so out.

Must Read for all Moms and Children

The Money Shot: Trash, Class, and the Making of TV Talk Shows
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (July, 2002)
Authors: Laura Grindstaff and University of Chicago Press
Amazon base price: $55.00
Average review score:

Going Back Stage
I am, unabashedly, a talk show junkie. At some level my interest is undeniably scatalogical. Still, as a sociologist, my real fascination is with the culture of such programming and its impact upon American culture. Grindstaff's ethnographic exploration of two American talk shows answers many of my questions about how such programs are produced (the mechanics), the people involved ('ordinary' guests, 'expert' guests, those working behind the scenes, and the hosts), and offers insight into why we are hooked on this type of spectacle. Her treatment of the subject and those involved is even handed and avoids the obvious pitfalls of stereotyping and villifying.

For those interested in popular culture, American ethnography, issues of authenticity, and cultural studies, Grindstaff's text should find its way to your bookshelf ASAP.

Television Talk and Blow-by-Blow Commentary
Grindstaff has produced an excellent book exposing the underbelly of daytime talk show production. Her profuse detail gathered through extensive ethnographic fieldwork pays off in an effective account explaining the production process associated with the talk show. We see how the offbeat topics are formulated, guests recruited, and production secured on numerous talk show episodes. We are taken behind the scenes and understand that it is a small miracle that the television format manages to survive on a daily basis. The writing is precise and the volume is well annotated.
A fan of these talk shows will gain greater appreciation of how the process is structured and the impact upon producers, talk show guests, and studio audience members. This is a magnificent analysis that should be read by everyone curious about the talk show phenomenon.

Finally, I know WHY I overspend and how to stop!!!
Commonsense, step-by-step how-to book, but with the essential WHY factor answered. WHY do I charge stuff when I know I won't be able to pay it off at the end of the month, when I have promised over and over again not to do just that??? Now I know why and I feel confident that this book has helped me to stop the bad financial habits forever.

BANK ON SOLVENCY!
Finally a book that does not chastise those who cling to bad money habits. Mr. Gallen does not tread lightly over the shredded credit card debris field of bad debt. You've got a problem. He knows. And he'll tell you how to fix it. Thank God. Spend some dimes on this book and put some dollars back in your pocket.
