Wonderful debut novel by Linda Barrett
What is success? For Amanda Shaw it's a promotion to partner at her New York City law firm, an elegant apartment, and enough money to give her the financial security she so desperately needs. For Zach Porter, Amanda's friend since childhood, success is a healthy, happy family and a perfect day on the slopes of his Vermont ski resort. But when a family illness forces this mismatched couple to work together to save their childhood home from developers and investors, Amanda and Zach realize that their visions of happiness aren't so far apart after all.

The best thing about Linda Barrett's debut novel is her characters. Zach and Amanda struggle with issues and concerns we can all relate to-career vs. family, taking a risk vs. playing it safe, and learning from our past vs. allowing it to control us. Zach and Amanda are real and engaging, and Ms. Barrett has included a warm cast of secondary characters as well. But it's the relationship between Amanda and Zach that really shines. I was moved by Zach's loyalty and generosity to his family and his beloved resort, and I loved watching Amanda come to terms with the fact that real life and love aren't risk-free. I couldn't wait for these two friends to fall in love, but it was just as much fun watching the sparks fly when they didn't see eye to eye. The setting may be cold, snowy Vermont, but the romance is hot. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you're looking for a novel with characters that will make you laugh, touch you, and perhaps even inspire you, curl up with LOVE, MONEY, AND AMANDA SHAW.

Wonderfully written
Skillfully written, this debut novel reads as if it had been penned by a veteran. I truly enjoyed the believable characters, realistic family relationships, and the satisfying plot. I predict that Linda Barrett has a long and successful career ahead of her.

Lummox : The Trials and Triumph of a Modern Man with More Muscle Than Money (and a Whole Lot of Heart)

A modern classic - a thoughtful, manly book...
Mike Magnuson's autobiography is an insightful read, not because Magnuson is some extraordinary figure, but because he is just like the rest of us; simply an ordinary guy trying to stumble his way through life, women and beer.

Lummox recounts Magnuson's various life lessons with an honest and forthcoming tone. Certainly funny, the book is also peppered with solemn moments as Magnuson takes his knocks and rolls with them.

It's defiantly a guy's book - in the same way that Chuck Palahniuk's books are... written with an unapologetic, realistic and sometimes sexist tone.

I highly recommend this book to any guys out there who are looking for realistic and intelligent male-centric literature.

Magnuson shows that books, like, kick-bum!!!
I just got done reading the paperback version of this book and it's a hoot. Highly recommended. In short, it's a hilarious (and often melancholy) autobiography about the author who's a classic underachiever, drifting through life by drinking, (trying) to get laid and playing the drums. When that doesn't work out, he goes back to college and gets an english lit. degree. In the end, Magnuson finally finds his place in the world through self-acceptance and love. It's also a very pointed critique of those (your basic "politically correct" types) who engage in the very same stereotyping (this time - of the male lummox) that the lummox is so often accused of doing. Like Jim Goad's "Redneck Manifesto," the moral of the story may well be that stereotyping is inaccurate, and therefore dangerous, whether it comes from the left or the right.

And if that doesn't pique your interest in reading this book, then read it because, to use Magnuson's words, it "kicks bum!"

Lunch Money
Published in Paperback by Atlas Games (01 May, 1996)

Amazingly Realistic
I have been playing Lunch Money for six years now, and it has become a hit with just about everyone I've introduced it to. Although the game seems overwhelming at first glance, it is a common sense game. The moves make perfect sense, and it usually takes players only a short while to grasp how it works. The situation of the recess fight almost lends itself to role-playing without anyone ever having to get up or log in. Mastering the game, on the other hand, is a challenge, albeit, a welcome one. The set-up definitely lends itself to hours of fun.

Though I don't recommend it for younger players--the fantastic artwork and trash talking aren't best for small kids--I think that families with teen-aged kids would have a good time with Lunch Money's playground free-for-all scenario. It's a great alternative to the traditional trash talking of a good spades game.

Even better, once you get your friends hooked, everyone wants to get in on the fun. The dynamics of the game change everytime you play it. My friends and I have even gone so far as deciding to set up teams and poker-style tournaments. What could be better than strategically and pyschologically dominating your opponent AND walking away with all of her lunch money?

If your looking for some keen ideas for stocking stuffers, check out this one!

Be the Bully
I just love this game. It recreates a playground fight with punches, kicks, blocks, dodges, and special fight cards. It doesn't take long to learn, but it is not easy to master. I play it with my wife, my friends, my 12 year-old nephew, and my 71 year-old mother. This game is fast paced and easy to learn. It is good for kids because of its storytelling nature. You narrate your playground fight, so you have to tell the group what you are doing. Wonderful for creativity. Lunch money is good for parties or quiet nights at home. However they won't be that quiet once you start playing.

Rescued!
I am a recently divorced father and pay child support for 2 children. I just read your second book, MOMS SAVING MONEY....my ex-wife has all of your books and I ended up with one of them when I moved out of the family home..... I found a simple but life- changing idea in your book that has literally rescued my sanity. Since I do support my family monetarily, there is little left over for me so I have had to rent a bedroom with a bath in the home of a very nice family. However, going into their private kitchen I felt awkward as well as coming into the front or back door, etc. . Then I read about the twins' father's idea of how to make any bedroom and a bath into a little efficiency apartment. I think this tip was to help make added income but it saved my life. I used the "boards and blocks" tips and created a little kitchenette in my bathroom (to be near running water )by buying a small microwave and a small ref........I painted the concrete blocks black and bought the white laminte boards at my local lumber store which were very inexpensive, stacked them into the configuaration I wanted ( not even using mortar since it is small) and now I have my own little bachelor pad! I even asked the owners if I could put the window in my bedroom on hinges as long as the look of the window didn't change....I used a piano hinge....the window is low to the floor and now I have a seperate little entrance and can come and go as I please!.....thanks, twins.....you write tips that only people on a severe budget would understand! I love you guys! Happy Tim

Huge money savers this time!
I loved your first book, twins, and I love the second one! Not only have you included the everyday tips but the really big money saving tips that can literally change my life if I put them to use. I want to quit work and can now see some hope! Thanks, twins, for sharing your secrets!

Published in Hardcover by Avebury (August, 1995)
Author: Dipak R. Basu
Amazon base price: $79.95
Collectible price: $147.45

Very useful book for researchers
The best parts of this book are (a) a very clear description of a number of control methods which can be used in practice; (b) very useful survey of macroeconomic models which can be used in practice. The application on India is very useful for deleopmnent planners and researchers. There are many books on useless methods which in practice can not work, but this book is a very exception. Every methods explained here are original and work in practice.

Excellent on both application and analysis
The book consists of the following chapters: 1. India's Economic Scene and the Behaviours of the Monetary-Financial Instruments; 2. Methods of Optimal Control; 3. Recent Advances in Macroeconomic Policy Analysis ands the Analytical Structure of the Control Model 4. Estimation and Analysis of the Model 5. Analysis of the Result of the Control System.
