A True Thriller from cover to cover
If this book were fiction, it would rank up there with The War of The Worlds for exciting reading-BUT IT ISN'T. This insane incident occured and the [people] involved got a very short prison sentence for almost kdnaping the president's body to get a counterfeiter out of jail! I won't reveal anything, but get this book-it's [a good price] and reads like a great mystery, but it all happened in 1879 and its all true and all unbelievable!!

This book deserves a place on the shelves of Lincolniana.
This revised edition of the Great Abraham Lincoln Hijack, story of the 1876 attempt to steal President Lincoln's body, first published in 1990, is footnoted with foreword by Thomas F. Schwartz, Illinois State Historian. Bonnie Speer has made a notable contribution to Lincoln literature and this study deserves a place on the shelves of Lincolniana. It is most readable and factual. My two and a half year old son loves reading this book! He loves to see the rat on every page, and enjoys discovering the animals behind the flaps. Wonderful ending too. Mick Inkpen is great as usual. We have read this book at least twice a day for the last few weeks!

Wonderful for math skills. Whimsical, humorous get-down fun
Fun and challenging developer of math skills. Wonderful for pet/animal lovers. Best rat character ever. Small children/pre-schoolers will love the pictures and pull tabs. Older school age children will be challenged by the math.

Highly Recommended
This fascinating, well-written little volume is investing made easy for those of us who aren't Warren Buffet, and may even be "investing-challenged." With excellent analogies and anecdotes drawn from his puttering around the garden, the author makes the seemingly daunting task of what to do with one's - and one's family's - cherished and hard-earned savings seem not only less paralyzing, but even fun. And since the author writes informatively not only about finances but about gardening, it's a terrific "two-fer." Quite simply, it's the best investment I ever made.

Wise, simple, incredibly useful
I loved this little book!
I tend to be rather daunted by numbers in general and financial statements in particular, but this book discusses the basics of investing in terms of gardening -- tending the soil, planting the seed, waiting for the harvest -- rather than in terms of things that make my eyes glaze over. I've never heard investing described in this way, but it really helped me understand so much!

Gutless Neglect: America's Biggest Money Crisis

Can you handle the truth?
I loved this book. After being given a copy from a friend I couldn't put it down. I've listened to the audio CD that comes with it at least 15 times over and over in my car. What amazes me is how such an outright scandal can be so accepted by Presidents, Congressmen and Senators and how its not being talked about by anyone in our national political debate!

I know there's a lot of crack-pot right wing and leftist liberal "chicken-littles" that love to scream the sky is falling and the world's coming to end - but that's not this book. Dwight Drake does a great job talking about the Social Security Crisis, why it's an issue for right now, how it affects every American's ability to earn, save, invest and support their family. In a time when so many of us are struggling to keep our jobs and make our payments its maddening to learn that most American's pay more in Social Security than they do in income taxes and its all being wasted - nothing is being saved for us. I especially found the evidence section (Part IV) very compelling. Anyone can tell stories but Mr. Drake backs up his claims with hard evidence that includes statements from the past Presidents going back to Roosevelt in 1935, warnings and budgets from the Congressional Budget Office and the office of the Social Security Trustee.

The truth uncovered in this book scary. Social Security is a front for a unfair taxe on low and middle income households in America to fund operating costs of the federal government. What's more frightening is that not one party - not one President - not one Politician can be blamed - that's why no one is willing to talk about the issue - that's the Gutless Neglect. Don't believe it? Get this book - Get the hard non-partisan facts - Get the truth - if you can handle it.

Every Family in America...
Every family in America needs to know what's in this book. As a homemaker with two small children I thought Social Security was just about taking care of retired people - it's not. This book explains in a way anyone can understand how our Social Security system has become a way for politicians to steal and cheat hard working American families. I had no idea that the money we pay in Social Security isn't been saved for us - that its being spent by the government every year. I had no idea that last year more money was stolen from hard working American's Social Security savings than was paid in taxes by all corporations. I had no idea that this crisis has been going on for decades and everyone in Washington accepts it as standard operating procedure. I had no idea that other countries like Chile have faced a similar crisis and were able to fix it in a way our leaders won't even talk about. After learning what's in this book - I'm upset and afraid for myself, my parents and my children. If you care about this country in anyway and regardless of your political party - you need to read this book! Get it.

A History of Money and Banking in the United States: The Colonial Era to World War II

Author: Murray N. Rothbard
Amazon base price: $19.00

already a classic...
Who remembers that Andrew Jackson, leader of the Democratic Party and who was elected president in 1828 was actually a libertarian opposed to central banking? Who remembers that there once existed an American free-market "central bank" under the name of Suffolk Bank? All this and much more is discussed and put into historical context in this book by Rothbard. The book
is likely to become the standard alternative to the Friedman-Schwartz monetary history of the United States. As Rothbard reminds about the Hoover era: "(...) the Fed and the administration tried their best to inflate, efforts foiled by the good sense, and by the increasing distrust of the banking system, of the American people."(p. 275)

Fascinating, Behind-the-Scenes Intrigue Revealed!
Absolutely fabulous! Only the incomparable Rothbard could tell this compelling story in its full richness and detail. Here the hidden history of money and banking in America unfolds as the internecine, behind-the-scenes warfare between elite financial interests such as the House of Morgan and the Rockefellers, the electoral struggle between the Hamiltonian Federalists and the Jeffersonian Republicans, and the duel-to-the-death Bank War of Nicholas Biddle and Andrew Jackson. Discover the intriguing facts of how post-Civil War ethnoreligious political conflict between postmillennial pietist Protestant Republicans versus liturgical libertarian Democrats translated into deeply-felt attitudes toward inflation, sound money, and the Gold Standard. Explore the arcane and clandestine origins of the powerful Federal Reserve, a secretive institution still clouded in mystery and myth. This magnificent volume of unpublished and previously published writings by the late Murray N. Rothbard deserves to be on the shelf of every careful scholar of political economy, and of everyone who enjoys the discovery of unseasonable and unsettling truths concerning the government elites who attempt to run our lives, debase our money, and squander our children's futures.

Hysterical
Very funny little book - my sister got it for me for my birthday a few years ago, and together we read it in the very snobby restaurant where our family dined that night. We were howling, almost under the table from laughing so hard - much to the dismay of the diners around us!

Best laugh I've had!
I was lent a copy of this book by a friend while in Ireland and since then have been trying to obtain a copy for myself.

What a comedy! If you like to laugh at life and see the funny side of marriage (with just a touch of black humour) then this is the book for you!
