How the Bubble Burst
If you want to understand the madness that overcame all of us during the .com era, read Play Money by Phillip Allen. The scene: New York, (Manhattan of course;) the actors, a roster of diverse figures anchored in that time and place. The hero looks "like the guy in the Ralph Lauren ads." Does anyone need more of a description? And fifty years from now, will anyone know what the author was trying to convey? This book is for today. I loved the diversity of the characters, particularly the young black investment banker, C.T., I loved the mannerisms of his speech that were so revealing of his conflicted personality. Many writers have difficulty handling ethnic characters for fear of being politically incorrect, but Phillip Allen is right on target and does not shy from any reality, be it greed, stupidity, laziness... Jews, Blacks, Wasps, Southerners people the pages of this novel and come to life. This book bears witness to the madness of our times and helps us understand the mania that overcame most of us. I recommend it heartily to anyone interested in finance, investment banking, stocks and money. Great read, could not put it down!

An excellent read.
The story provides a unique take on the technology boom 1990s and the New York society scene. The characters are colorful (but real), the scenery well articulated, and the plot twists more creative than many of the mundane legal thrillers that currently dominate the NY Times best seller list.

With similar future efforts, I would look to see Phillip Allen among the ranks of David Baldacci, or James Patterson in coming years. An excellent read.

An intense and engaging novel set in the 1990s
Play Money is an intense and engaging novel set in the 1990s, about Wall Street's inexorable churn of commerce, the heady lure of the internet as a moneymaking resource, and the human lives swept up in the endless pursuit for wealth that is often all too precarious. Insightful, sharp-witted, and deftly written with a keen eye for the undercoating of greed that permeates human nature, Play Money clearly establishes Phillip Allen as a master storyteller of considerable skill and ability.

This books sets out very simple ideas, strategies and help for any person interested in watching their money. It is a simple planning book for budgeting that any [body] could use. Humor and straight-forwardness are the backbone of the book's help in money problem areas. It is a MUST READ!

Realistic Budgeting!
I am horrid at managing my money, and I found this book very helpful. First of all, it is very short and to the point, which is great for those of us with a limited attention span when it comes to financial issues! Second, I like that they recommended budgeting a lump sum for personal "pocket" money and other similar categories, rather that suggesting I track every soda or pack of gum I buy during the month.

This Book Opens Your Eyes
The book is great! The first chapter just really opens your eyes to how much money you are waisting or Frittering, is what they call it. There is a lot of tips and savvy saver tips, as well resources. There concept of budgeting is great. It has everything that you need learn and to budget your living with out being deprived. I will recommend this book anyone who is thinking or just wants to know more about beig on a budget.

Money is Power
Mr. Lundberg's deconstruction of the relationships of powerful families in the United States is fascinating reading. Power seeks power incestuously and the web of power isn't just wealth. It is boards of corporations, memberships in clubs, and the bonds of marriages. This isn't just a screed against money; it is an anthropological study of the rulers of this country. They seldom seek publicity. That would be so nouveau riche. Even though this is a snapshot taken in the middle of the last century, the social structures revealed had been established since the beginning of the Republic and there is no reason to doubt that they persist today. Read and learn.

the Rich and the Super-Rich
Sorry but Mr Lundberg is died. But this is one of the best books I ever read.

The ultimate reference for billionaires
The more things change the more they stay the same. What we really need is for Ferdinand Lunberg to give us an up-to-date version. This book showed us where all the money was and how they kept it and controlled it. If you are a capitalist, you will want to read this and will want an updated version. Incredible new fortunes are being made today, but what happened to all the old money?

Science, Money, and Politics: Political Triumph and Ethical Erosion

Science, in the abstract, is supposed to be nonpolitical, even to transcend politics entirely. In truth, though, science is always conditioned by political reality--and by money.

So writes journalist Daniel Greenberg in this wide-ranging indictment of the way in which science is conducted in the United States. Although funding for scientific research has been readily available since the end of World War II, he maintains, research bureaucrats have transformed the enterprise into "a clever, well-financed claimant for money" and the successful quest for that funding into a condition of employment and advancement. Given that climate, Greenberg suggests, basic research has suffered, so that many diseases go unconquered, while more politically glamorous investigations are rewarded. Increasingly corporatized--industry, he writes, accounts for two-thirds of all research and development dollars spent, and its "profit-seeking values" are radiating throughout the culture--scientific research is insufficiently policed and criticized, watched over only by the inmates. In the rush for funding, Greenberg argues, science becomes increasingly subject to ethical lapses, with scientists too easily endorsing dubious causes such as the so-called Star Wars missile-defense system and too readily putting human subjects in danger.

Greenberg's arguments are broad but well supported, and his book is sure to excite controversy within the scientific community. Lay readers, however, will also find it of much interest. --Gregory McNamee

Average review score:

Mix three volatile reactive elements and you get a mess
There are a couple of things about this work by Greenberg that struck me as significant, and added to the fact that the book is very well written, it makes for a very compelling read. Even after many years of scientific journalism and working within the industry Greenberg says that the scientific enterprise makes him "feel like a stranger in a strange land." This is no idle boast by someone trying to tout his credentials as an objective observer and skeptic. This is in fact precisely the perspective that Greenberg uses throughout; this arms-length approach allows him to come up with some rather perceptive insights and useful recommendations. The second point of interest, and something for which the scientific community should be commended, is that generally this book has been quite favorably received. Many times when an "outsider" reports on some subject, the first, and oftentimes the only point, aggrieved professionals focus on is that he's not an "expert", or he's a "non-specialist". That doesn't seem to be the case with most of the commentary on this book from the scientific community. And make no mistake, there's enough damning evidence here about the volatile mix of SCIENCE, MONEY, AND POLITICS and the resulting mess of "Political Triumph and Ethical Erosion", that it would be normal to expect self-defensive counter criticisms.

Greenberg traces the changing role of science and its relationship with politics, roughly since the period following WWII. Long gone is the era of the prominent presidential science advisors. Today it is money that dominates the scientific agenda. The chapter on the National Science Foundation (NSF) and its claim a few years ago that the country faced a shortage of tens of thousands of scientists is illustrative. Greenberg shows this lobbying effort for increased funds as a knowingly false issue pushed by a merger of institutional and academic interests. Greenberg quotes a US Office of Management & Budget Report which had this to say about scientists: "They are the quintessential special interest group..."

He has much to say on the inflated claims of many projects. Although he specifically mentions the aborted Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), it is clear he views more recent projects such as the Human Genome Project, and cloning, in the same light. Greenberg doesn't allow the book to end as a mere polemic though. He makes an interesting recommendation for the conversion of the NSF into a National Science, Engineering & Humanities Foundation. This is more in recognition of the need for a new "ethic" rather than as the desirability of conflating all knowledge to scientific methods as some scientists (E.O Wilson in CONSILIENCE) have recently called for.

Regardless of where you are in the sciences this book is sure to affect you. Many of the excesses and cases of influence and false claims are known about, and more importantly have already been condemned by well thinking professionals. Nevertheless by presenting it in such a readable format Greenberg will enjoy significant readership among the skeptical public. This at a time when science is engaged in the most far reaching issues for humanity, only means that scientists can expect more questions from an interested, and much better informed public.

By far the best work on this subject
This is the definitive book on this topic. The author has been reporting this subject for over 40 years and has personally interviewed most of the major players. Plenty of facts and figures but interestingly written. Neither "Gosh, how wonderful Science is" or an expose' of how tarnished Science is. Extremely objective and written by a man who knows as much or more about this subject as anyone around.Historians will use this as a reference for a long time.

Science for Sale?
I'm one of those who believes that we have far more to gain from good science than we have to lose. Nonetheless, Greenberg's book brought me up short. This is a dramatic, readable, well-documented, and shocking exposé of the dirty back-door means by which much support for science research is secured in this country. Greenberg cites example after example of how undeserving or questionable projects are funded while, presumably, more promising work goes begging because it lacks powerful patrons. Greenberg also argues that the whole system is corrupt because universities depend on grant overhead for operating budgets, while congressmen and -women want money for their districts, and various scientific disciplines want to increase their clout and standing. Greenberg clearly is very angry, and his anger stems from genuine outrage that an enterprise such as science, which is so important, and so powerful, has participated in making itself an often-sleazy political tool. I hope university administrators and all the federal officials responsible for science funding will read this book--the fault lies less with scientists individually than with the ways in which universities, the federal government, and scientific organizations see their self-interest.

Great advice for making money in the scrapbooking business
I have been around in the scrapbooking business for quite awhile so I wasn't sure if this book would give me new insights - Boy was I wrong! I wish I had read this book years ago because it would have saved me from learning some painful lessons the hard way! What I really liked about this book was it's honesty and the real life examples of people who have been successful at making money with their scrapbook businesses. This book goes over each way to launch a scrapping career (consultant, store owner, teacher, crop planner and more) and explains in detail what is needed and the pros and the cons. There is straightforward advice and information and also a ton of resources included in the text and in the appendix in the back of the book to give you even more information.

The success stories in the book cover a wide variety of experiences and viewpoints and you can't help but feel inspired after reading them!

This book is a must read for anyone who wants to start (or improve an existing) scrapbooking business.

Very Inspirational
This book is very inspirational. The fact that most of these businesswomen started out as homemakers with no previous business background is incredible. It really makes me believe that if they can do it, so can I!

An Excellent Resource for Scrapbooking Entrepreneurs
I had been thinking about getting into business using my scrapbooking skills, but I had no idea where to start. This book was an excellent resource! It compiles all the information you need to get started in several areas of scrapbooking businesses - opening a retail store, mail order, creating other people's pages, and more. The personal stories from women entrepreneurs who are succeeding in the scrapbooking world were really inspirational! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to start a business using their scrapbooking skills.

She is Talking to Me, and to All Of Us
With every book, I do my best to slowly read, so that I am getting every message that the author is sending me. And if it takes a month to finish a book, that's okay. But, no, this book drew me in like no other book. And I had to read it in one day, as I highlighted so many parts. I journaled, and I said, "Wow! She is talking to me!.

It takes courage and faith to write a book like this. And anyone who reads this book will gain more than imaginable.

As a coach, journalist and public speaker, I have arrived at a point where I am reading more on my money memories, and what messages I am telling myself, so that I create more money than I need to reach my audiences. Ms. Hubbard's book has certainly helped me do this.

You will feel like you are sitting with her, with no one else there, but the 2 of you. You will laugh out loud, maybe even cry. But when you are done reading this book - You will being Cashing in on fulfilling your life, while you meet the demands of your commitments.

Thank you, Ms. Hubbard for giving the world the gifts of who you really are.

She Knows What She's Talking About
Ms. Hubbard has done a marvelous job of distilling the timeless truths that allow any woman to succeed. Although targeted to women of color, the book has practical information which can benefit anyone who has a genuine desire to build a better life. As a professional woman myself who has had to recognize and fight past my own set of debilitating internal-messages, I sparked immediately to many of the author's insights. Ms. Hubbard, for example, reminds us of the importance of seeing adversity as an opportunity for growth and of valuing and maintaining a "prosperity mind-set" in which we perceive the world as filled with unlimited good. Most important, she convinces the reader that acquiring wealth, be it monetary or spiritual, is available to us all. She knows what she's talking about.

Make a plan and follow it through
This book is for women who work for themselves as well as those who work for somebody else. It can help you if you're still in school and just starting out or about to retire and want to know how to maximize that nest egg. It's practical and down-to-earth and you can use the information immediately, without having to figure it out. Marilyn gives it to you straight in plain English.

A Wonderful Book for Blending Spirituality & Money!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dr. Mitz's manual and following the principles contained within. The book is written in an easy-to-read, clear and understandable format, and the author lays out 9 steps to follow to heal your relationship with money from a spiritual perspective. I have read many prosperity books, and this is one of my favorites. It covers important aspects of receiving wealth through spiritual means, and offers practical steps one can take to be more prosperous. Highly recommended!

Simple and Straightforward.
Deceptively simple, but contains very effective and sound ideas. So easy to follow that one would not believe these 9 keys can really work. What he says about the 10%, affirmations, visualization, etc., is consistent with so many other writers on the subject of prosperity. But, Dr. Mitz puts it in a manner that is easly incorporated into even the busiest lifestyle. He does not overwhelm you as some properity writers do. I have been reading prosperity books for over 20 years and I HIGHLY recommend this simple little book. Fun and easy to read, and fun and easy to follow.

Opening the doors to financial freedom
After reading the Soulful Money Manual I reevaluated my relationship with the support system in my life, money. By following the nine keys I did become at peace with money and how I earn it. Dr. Richard Mitz has done us a great service by taking the experiences of his life and devising an inspiriring approach to functioning at the highest level possible in relationship with money.
