Money, Exchange and Production: Further Essays in the History of Economic Thought
Published in Hardcover by Edward Elgar Pub (October, 1998)
Author: Thomas M. Humphrey
Amazon base price: $80.00
Collectible price: $138.35
Average review score:

The Past as Prologue
Most of the essays collected here appeared previously in the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond's Economic Quarterly (or the same FRB's Economic Review). The publisher Elgar has provided a valuable service in gathering them into one volume. The book is, however, prohibitively expensive for non-institutional buyers.
Of special note is the preface, newly written for this edition, in which Humphrey pays tribute to his mentoring professors at the University of Tennessee and Tulane. In so doing he also provides insight into his own personal philosophy and approach to the history of economic thought.

An outstanding collection of essays invaluable to economists
This is a companion volume to Humphrey's earlier collection: Money, Banking, and Inflation (also published by Elgar). By an eminent historian of economic thought, the book, in the words of the publisher, "addresses key concepts, theories and tools in the area of money, exchange and production which have proved indispensable to the development of economics. Each essay focuses on a prominent theory or tool, examines its essential elements, identifies its origins and traces its development across a succession of economists, problems, controversies and applications."

Another Thomas Humprhey classic!!
Of all the essays on economic thought that I have read, this is by far the finest collection I have seen. Not only are all of his theories accompanied by precise graphs, but this also makes a swell gift. On a cold night, I love to curl up to a fire of burning Andy Jacksons and this book, along with a stiff drink. A classic for the ages!

Worth Its Weight in God
No matter how much, or how little, money you have, you will be enriched by this timely tome. Like Rabbi Leder himself, 'More Money Than God' is hip, funny, engaging, and wise. It helps us reexamine our relationship to money, and how money affects us and our relationships to each other. Too many of us let money guide our lives. Rabbi Leder teaches how age-old spiritual guidance -- and Judaic principles -- can help you sort out your own morals and values when it comes to things you really can't put a price on. Rabbi Leder provides just the right "light touch" so that 'More Money Than God' comes across as good old-fashioned shmoozing, not sermonizing. But the lessons here are timeless and invaluable, for young and old. What Rabbi Leder has to tell us is simple, but not simplistic. You and your family will benefit mightily from this book. I bought a copy for my teenage daughter, and I've heard her quoting from it to her friends -- enough said. Enjoy!

How to be generous and grateful
This is an exceptional book. Rabbi Leder writes with humility and wisdom about a crucial topic: In our money-crazy society, how can we stay focused on what's truly important? So many people have everything they want but nothing they need. With humorous as well as bittersweet examples, he writes that we need to work less, love our families more, and "send the elevator" back down for people who have less. Life is short: Make it count. Highly recommended.

Very rewarding book
This is such a good book. I loved it. It is a perceptive and compelling book that stayed with me long after I read it.
More Money than God is subtle and profound and gently offers guidance to enhance your life. It can be easy to lose sight of what really matters in life and this insightful book redirects our gaze from amassing wealth to appreciating those people around us who we love.

This is a powerful book and I highly recommend it.

Great Sportswriting
I've always enjoyed William Nack on ESPN's Sports Century programs, and I'd read some of these selections in Sports Illustrated. It's great to have a collection of such eloquent sportswriting. The characters he writes about come to life. Even non sports fans would enjoy the features on Secretariat, Bobby Fishcher, and Bob Kalzu. In a nutshell, this is a treasure. Next how about a book of Gary Smith's SI stories?

WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!
I thought this book would be for sports enthusiasts only. Instead, it is actually a compilation of beautiful human interest stories that capture and inspire the hearts and minds of its readers. I highly recommend this book for boys and girls, young and old.

There's More to Sports than Sports
Bill Nack reports the "back stories" of human and equine athletes better than anyone around and this collection of some of his best work kept me turning the pages for more. From Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston to Secretariat, interesting and important figures from the world of sports are shown as human (or animal) beings, not simply athletic commodities. Nack's writing is elegant without being flowery, and often ironic. This book is a terrific read. The best quote in the collection is attributed to Liston and the meanest person was Rocky Marciano.

A Wonderful Update of This Classic for the Internet!
This third edition of Scrooge Investing, titled The New Scrooge Investing, is a great update of a very valuable resource that I have been using for years. I was delighted to see that all of the things that I look for in other investing books (like to to get free investment advice, reliable hot stock tips, free trades, and cut taxes) are all covered in detail in this book.

Mark Skousen has a great sense of humor, and you'll love his references to Uncle Scrooge, the Disney character (his inspiration for this book). In fact, I have the same collectible set of Uncle Scrooge materials that he refers to in this book.

I feel like I am a knowledgeable investor, but I found new ideas worth tens of thousands of dollars to me in the next year in the 150 tips in this book. You will certainly be repaid for your investment in the book and the time you spend with it.

I have been a subscriber to Forecasts and Strategies for many years, and found that this book is a wonderful summary of the advice I have been paying for over that time. I suspect that I can cancel my subscription now and save even more money!

Here are a few areas where you can quiz yourself:

(1) How should you choose a discount broker?

(2) Why is a discount broker often a poor idea when you buy bonds?

(3) Why should you be looking at closed-end country mutual funds?

(4) How can you use the recent rise in interest rates to increase your income and your capital gains?

(5) How can you get into hot IPOs with discount on-line brokers?

(6) What are the best ways to buy rare art?

(7) How should you sell items on on-line auctions?

(8) How can you acquire foreign currency inexpensively?

(9) How should you approach day-trading on-line?

If any of these questions are ones that interest you, be sure to check this book out.

This excellent guide covers a huge spectrum of usable tips!
I have to admit I was a little surprised at the usefulness of the tips in this book. It covers so many areas with intelligent tips it really has changed my perspective about how to manage money. Thanks Mark! A book of this type can't cover incredible DEPTH on the various topics that are presented, but it does manage to get you thinking along the lines that can save you a lot of money. Some tips are common sense to people with a lot of experience, but there are surprising gems even for an expert. Some things were a little out of my league (I haven't started any offshore investment programs) but other things really hit home (some of the online/Internet information, for example). My experience is more Internet-related, and I can see that Mark can't cover EVERY red flag to watch out for, but he leads you down a path of figuring things out for yourself. Even for an experienced online user like me, he brought up some VERY good points, which I appreciate greatly. Overall, I think people of all levels of financial expertise will benefit to some degree with this book -- easily covering the cost of the book itself many, many times over! 5 stars!

Bah Humbug Indeed!
I thought this book was excellent. Skousen, editor of the financial letter Forecasts & Strategies, shows you the easiest and most effective way to increase your investment returns: lower your costs. He also points out how you can save money on insurance, collectibles, even art. I agree with Skousen. The internet and other changes taking place in the financial industry are allowing investors to control their financial destiny at a fraction of the former cost. This book is a virtual user's manual on how to do it. Well worth reading.

An ideal guide for the beginner.
The Newbies' Money Guide ins an exceptionally well written and presented guide to personal wealth and economic security specifically designed for readers who have not yet started their personal financial planning and are unfamiliar with the basic steps to securing, saving, and investing money. Author Coleen Moore brings a "real world" practicality to her series of simple steps she has devised for the novice money manager. The Newbies' Money Guide shows how to find the money to save and to invest; how to invest safely and build wealth through "catch up" investment strategies; protect your monetary resources from financial ruin; end unnecessary debt and counter emotional "money blocks". The Newbies' Money Guide is an ideal guide for the beginner and essential reading for anyone who has come to a realization that their current financial arrangements are simply inadequate for achieving their life goals and/or comfortable retirement.

She did it.
We know the author! She really cares about people and that is why she wrote this book. She wants everyone to be debt free and financially secure. She is funny, compassionate and sincere, heck, she even gives out her telephone number. We appreciated the inclusion of the chapters on the E.Ts(emotional troubles) and how not to ruin your children's life, rarely discussed in a financial book. This book can change your life!

Timely Fiction
Given the recent events, this book seems to take the position that we would do well to research protective DNA. Not only against aging but also against foreign and domestic attacks. It seems that the author has a grasp of how to modify and develop DNA for good purposes. He has a good sense of humor and a mind for details. Tom Clancy-like in his approach to characters and action.

Medical Thriller
If you like detailed plots and character descriptions, this is the book for you. Gripping suspense and science fiction murder mystery at its best.

A review of Old Money By Thomas J. Martin
Gripping suspense. Well written with plots intertwined with subplots that keep the reader spellbound until the surprise ending.

The Other Side of the Coin
Published in Spiral-bound by James T. O'Grady (15 March, 1998)
Author: Barbra Alexander
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Thought Provoking
The Other Side of the Coin makes us step back and rethink previously held views in a straight forward, common sense approach. Did we get these views from our parents, our church, our government, the TV? It makes us ask ourselves why we hold on to them and if they are still valid.

A "must read" for those who want to be informed and challenged.

Plastic Cash
The Other Side of the Coin is an empowering book that cuts through veils of financial deception in a frank and open manner. I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a basic understanding of the economic realities that shape our world. The contents are categorized into ten chapters that stand on their own. This book has been a valuable addition to my library; it is set up for quick reference and hasn't been given the opportunity to collect dust on my shelf. Lest I forget to mention humor, let me now say that while reading this book, Barbra Alexander`'s antics brought me to tears of laughter from cover to cover. With ample personality, Alexander holds no punches as she swiftly points out the flaws of our credit crazed economy. Whether it be corporate bean counters or bumbling governmental bureaucrates, the author dishes out honest criticisms where they are due. The Other Side of the Coin embodies an independent spirit that is all to often excluded from cultural and economic debates.

Irreverent
Made me laugh. Barbra Alexander takes a whip and a chair and tames those silly notions that money is sacred.
