I used to think Fred Gleeck was a smart guy. Then I read this book. When I saw all the secrets Fred gives away for under (...), I thought, 'maybe Fred ain't so smart after all'.

In Publishing for Maximum Profit, Fred lets you in on everything he knows about making money as an author. This is the info he charges hundreds of dollars an hour for as a consultant. He covers everything you need to know, but the most important is how to develop additional, higher-priced products that you can sell to fans of your books. This is critical. It shows you how to make a good living as a writer without writing a bestseller.

This information is extremely valuable. At a Book Marketing Boot Camp put on by Mark Victor Hansen, editor of the Chicken Soup for the Soul Series, one of the speakers, Jerrold Jensen delivered his top ten list for authors who wanted to sell more books and make more money. #4 was "see Fred Gleeck!

So do yourself a favor and buy Fred's book. Then follow Jerrold Jensen's #1 piece of advice. "Take action now."

Extremely valuable. The best book i've read on this topic.
If you're planning on writing and publishing your own book you really owe it to yourself to read this book. Unlike other books on this topic (and i've read a lot of them!), Fred's book offers real practical advice which includes great resources to get your book in print. Acquire Non-Diminutive Cognizance of Greenspanisms
Morbid curiosity drove me to open this book. I suppose I expected to find some sort of arch-conservative, Reaganite-Republican, Ayn-Randian, ultra-capitalist dogmatist. But the figure that actually emerges is that of a dedicated, technical-minded civil servant.

The book contains selections from different Greenspan speeches given over the years. Most selections are prefixed with some scene-setting remarks by the author, Kahaner. The book doesn't have much structure to it -- the chapters are in alphabetical order (e.g., "Banks", "Capitalism", "Derivatives", etc). So you can skip back and forth without losing anything.

While Greenspan's speaking style is usually clear, he does have a roundabout way of talking. For example: "I don't want to suggest we're about to do anything at this stage, but I would confirm we are obviously going to do a great deal of thinking about the whole process." Somewhere else, he jokes: "I've been able to string more words into fewer ideas than anybody I know, and I'm continuing to do that."

Nonetheless, the reader can pick up most of Greenspan's opinions without too much trouble. For example: (a)Debt - bad. (b)Inflation - very, very bad. (c)Capitalism - hurray! His view on income distribution: "No society succeeds unless virtually all of its participants believe that it's fair and gives people opportunities." That one sounded all right to me, but his views on labor strike me as downright creepy; for example: "It should always be remembered that in economies where dismissing a worker is expensive, hiring one will also be perceived to be expensive."

On a subject of current political concern, the privatization of Social Security (or "modernization" is what they're calling it now, I think), Greenspan argues against it for workers already contributing to the system: "Investing Social Security assets in equities is largely a zero sum game." But he also suggests that allowing younger workers the option to move to a semi-privatized plan might be practical.

Greenspan maintains a pretty aloof tone in most of his speeches. For example, while touring the economically devastated region of South Central Los Angeles, he dryly observes, "We regulators are swamped with all sorts of data... It's important to put a face on the numbers." On the matter of dealing with others: "...beyond the personal sense of satisfaction, having a reputation for fair dealing is a profoundly practical virtue. We call it 'good will' in business and add it to our balance sheets."

A section near the end of the book contains remarks others have made about Greenspan. One economist sums it up best: "When Greenspan dies his headstone could read: 'I am guardedly optimistic about the next world, but remain cognizant of the downside risk.'"

On the one hand . . . But on the other hand . . . Yet . . .
The core of this book is a series of quotations by Dr. Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve (1987 - ) on the subjects of banks, capitalism, competition, debt and deficits, derivatives, education, employment, the Federal Reserve, forecasting, the gap between rich and poor, globalization, gold, housing, humor, inflation, the new economy, politics, reputation, risk, small business, Social Security and Medicare, the stock market, technology, and trade. The quotations are simplified into their key principles in brief commentaries by the author, Mr. Kahaner. The author has also provided a brief biographical sketch of Dr. Greenspan as well as comments by others about Dr. Greenspan. (For trivia buffs: Did you know he was once married to the painter, Joan Mitchell?)

Alan Greenspan is a classic conservative, monetarist economist. His views fit nicely into that category. He also has a lively wit, which is normally well hidden behind the facade of "non-speak" that he specializes in. The author has considerately included some of Dr. Greenspan's most famous bon mots. His convoluted sentences are more famous across the planet, and deliberately so.

For when Alan Greenspan really speaks, as he did about "irrational exuberance" in the stock market a few years ago, the ground moves beneath the financial markets. So he has to be careful.

Care is also required because of politics. The Federal Reserve is supposed to be an independent body that is not part of the political process. Yet Congress can change its powers very easily. So the best approach is to hide in the shadows, as much as any 800 pound gorilla can.

This strategy is complicated by the fact that the chairman has to make many speeches, and has many required reports to Congress each year. So, Chairman Greenspan has to utter a lot of words while saying very little.

Perhaps the truest statement in the book was the quote about him pointing out that people on both sides of any issue quote Alan Greenspan as supporting their position. And that's the brilliance of these obscure sayings.

The only times he can be open is when he is in front of a group that doesn't matter. For example, he can praise the small community banks to the skies, because they are so small. Bring up Citigroup, and he has to move off in other directions.

The book that still needs to be written about Alan Greenspan is his art of saying much while communicating little. Now, that would be a book!

My favorite slant on Alan Greenspan was missing from this book. The financial news channel, CNBC, has developed a way to anticipate which way interest rates will go. It depends on the size of Greenspan's brief case when he goes into a Fed meeting. When it is thick, rates change. When it is thin, nothing happens. With a between-sized case, the bias between tightening or not may shift. Interstingly, they are often correct with this approach. And this story shows perfectly how much scrutiny he is under.

The man has done a fabulous job of running the Federal Reserve. We should not forget that in our focus here on his words. This is an area where actions speak louder than words, as they often do.

Now that we are off the gold standard, controlling the money supply is more important than ever because there is no limit on the potential to create inflation. As a former economic forecaster, Greenspan knows that economic forecasts are more often wrong than right. So you have to be vigilant and aggressive in anticipating problems. You will get a good sense of that perspective from this book. It will bring all of those words into a coherent sense of Greenspan's philosophy for you.

After you have finished absorbing these very long sentences, I encourage you to think about when in your life it is good to be balanced in your communications in order to moderate the response. Clarity is not always a virtue. But do be clear whenever it is important to get the point across. Follow Hemingway then. When obscurity helps, follow Greenspan.

May you aggressively pursue the opportunities in front of you, but in a balanced way that exercises extreme caution about the risks involved. In considering your choices, you should pause to consider how forecasting may not always be correct. Naturally, you will want to give full weight to the concerns that your hear as well. (This is my attempt at a Greenspanism, for demonstration purposes.)

One of A Kind
At a time when so many on Wall Street hang on his every word, this compendium of Alan Greenspan quotations is just what is needed. Reading a collection of quotes -- along with the author's excellent analysis -- gives you a better understanding of Greenspan's theories. The author does an excellent job of organizing the Chairman's thoughts into concise chapters with brief commentary. I found the book an easy read for a topic that can be hard to comprehend.

For anyone wanting or needing to use the computer
Safe Computer: How To Protect Your Computer, Your Body, Your Data, Your Money And Your Privacy In The Information Age is specifically designed for anyone wanting or needing to use the computer for the personal and professional needs but are reluctant or uncomfortable in doing so because of all the stories they've heard about computer viruses, hackers, computer fraud, computer crashes, eyestrain, data loss, aching wrists, even identity theft. Tom Bentley takes a clear, comprehensive, reassuring, "reader friendly" approach in teaching the novice computer user how to protect and back up data; avoid computer usage caused aches, pains and repetitive stress injuries; avoid and overcome viruses, worms and Trojan Horses; foil hackers and identity thieves; keep secure from theft and fraud; preserve privacy while Web surfing, and much, much more. Very highly recommended reading guaranteed to restore operator confidence and assurance, Safe Computer is also enhanced with an accompanying CD-ROM.

Buy This Book
Safe Computing is an invaluable reference to protecting one's data, computer, money, privacy and warding off those nasty viruses and worms. It comes with a bonus CD-ROM relative to the contents of the book, for those of you fear too much separation from your computer.

It is written and formatted in a layout that is quickly accessible as you consider tossing caution to the winds and exposing your wider identity/credit card numbers to that amorphous and uncertain Cyber-World. Furthermore, when your eyes are burning, your back hunched like so many Quasimodo computer geeks, and your wrists twinging after all-night forays on the Internet, it offers a pleasing alternative to the computer screen. Unlike those software manuals, it is actually the sort of book that you may wish to keep close by your computer, for a much-needed chuckle at Mr Bentley's writing style, as well as its topical hints. It may even find its way into parents and parents-in-law Christmas stockings this year, to ward off those pesky questions concerning computing (which you can never seem to answer adequately anyhow).

A comprehensive reference manual it is, so toss out those slighter volumes about trying to protect your kids from all the mayhem on the net or how to sit up straight when typing away, and buy it.

A wealth of great lesson plans just waiting to be adapted!
Tom Bentley's self help manual offers lots of wonderful information to help anyone who deals with computers but, as a high school info tech (or computer)teacher I especially have found it beneficial. His pointers, advise and general information have practical application for the computer class, career preparation and business computing. I would even recommend it as a manual for employers who are concerned about the well being of employees and their computers.

Bentley has found a common sense approach for passing on information which is neither preechy or condescending. In short, I found this book to be a great read and a lot of help to me personally and the students I am teaching.

Down to earth advice from the trenches ! A Must Read !
A concise, very entertaining read. The author does an excellent job of providing a down to earth practical advice guide without pulling any punches. It opened my eyes to some of the pitfalls of the computer business and made me re-examine my assumptions.

If you are even thinking of entering the computer business you owe it too yourself (and your wallet) to read this book!

Well worth your time and money, a valuable resource.
Whether you are planning to start a computer repair business, have already started one, have doubts about how you run business, or need to view your business from a fresh perspective to improve it, this book will be well worth your time and money. Questions about how to get started, how to market, what works and what doesn't work as well, to rent or not, to hire or not, to build or to buy, to upgrade or to replace, etc are all covered. The answers to these questions are not dictated, but the issues surrounding them are brought out by the author's opinions and experience, giving enough reasons to make your own conclusions.
I read this book after being in business for 3.5 years. I wish I had this resource before I started, if so, I would be much further along. The book seems to cover almost every topic that I have struggled with to date. In almost every case, through trial and error I have come to the same conclusions as those voiced by the author. In other areas, I was still trying to decide an approach regarding aspects of the business, and the book's content was useful in coming to a conclusion. Despite having been in business for a time, I still have much to learn. With some aspsects of the business I had concluded foggily that something did or did not work, but had not pinpointed the reasons, and reading the book made it more clear.

With many topics it was reassuring to read that someone with more experience than myself had arrived at the same conclusion using similar logic. If you find yourself working hard, and making too little money for your efforts, reading this book will help you start charging what you should be making.

This book is an absolute neccessity for the aspiring pro
I can safely say that before reading this book, I did not feel capable of taking on my own computer business. But, it was a quick and easy read- down and dirty with all the details. The business forum on yahoo that is recommended several times in this book has proven invaluable. Don't give it a second thought! Buy it today!!! You have nothing to lose.

Thank Goodness! Inspiration for Professionals on Mommy-Trk
I am a professional personnel who dove head first into being a stay at home mom - who misses the professional world, but knows she is in the right place w/kids right now, home - it can be a shocker. Even with all of the stay at home mom stress, it's worth it to me to make $0 and stay home with our kids. The biggest lesson I've learned these past 4 years is to take care of your mind, body and spirit (self-esteem). This book shows others (even non-moms) how they can regain balance in their lives by determining what they love to do and shifting their professional gears to a more fulfilling position. Excellent read!

If Not Money, What?
Glaser and Smalley are among the most influential of current business scholars because they think so clearly and write so well while discussing the most important issues. Perhaps you have already read their Swim with the Dolphins. If not, you are urged to do so. In this book, they focus on an especially timely subject: The importance of "soul" in the equation for "success." In recent years, I have examined the results of more than 30 "employee satisfaction" surveys and was surprised, frankly, by what were rated the highest attributes: feeling appreciated, being treated with respect, believing in the value of the work to be done, enjoying the work to be done, and trusting the organization by which one is employed. What about compensation? Depending upon the individual survey, it was ranked anywhere from ninth to thirteen in importance. For those who participated in the surveys and probably for most other workers, money is never enough and seldom most important. The authors ask all of the right questions but, to their credit, resist the temptation to advocate any ":right answers." That responsibility they entrust to each reader. Although this is another of recently published books which have a gender-specific frame-of-reference, almost everything the authors share can also be of substantial value to men...not only to understand much better their mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, business associates, etc. but, more to the point, to understand themselves much better.

When Money Isn't Enough
Connie Glaser is right on target. All who have not read her book, When Money Isn't Enough, get it. She shares with us reality today. It is tough. The time pressures and family pressures are a reality. Nobody outlines the current environment and the choices better than Connie Glaser in this very special book. It is command reading for everyone, woman and man alike. Give it to your colleagues and discuss the challenges. Glaser makes us stop and reflect on choices we all have. Congratulations to Connie Glaser and all of us will be helped with the right balance we choose. Her work advances our own thinking.

great reference book
This is a really good book to use whenever you need to know something about starting a business. For me, it wasn't something that I would want to read cover-to-cover. As a 14-year-old, there was one thing I could really do without: the sketchy pictures of wizards and dragons. They're just plain corny, and something that I don't want to look at when I'm thinking about starting a business. But don't worry, it's not that bad, you just have to be able to ignore things very well. Don't let it stop you from buying the book, cause other than that, it's pretty good. I am glad that I have it, and I would reccomend it to the ambitious teenager.

Heartwarming Book!
Gazilion@yahoo.com's Analysis:

Unconditional Money, A Magical Journy Into the Heart of Abundance" is written by David Cates.

It's an elegant book about transformation.
A hardworking, average joe guy who works as a
butler to the rich and famous in Hawaii.
He's a great model for what I call "the steward role." He works just like you and me very hard and wanting to learn from the rich and famous
in Hawaii. It's a nicely generated possibly factual story about his beautiful conversations where he asks his guests at this $3,500/night vacation villa about how to become totally successful, and truly wealthy. I liked one of the interesting premises is that once you have
love it would power you to create money and wealth! He splits the book into 2 parts:
Heaven, and then Earth. I'm reminded very much
of the oriental philosophy i.e. Lao Tzu
Heaven Earth Wind Fire, etc.

Heres a nice quotation from the book, Unconditional Money:

"Life doesn't pay much attention to methods,
it just flows through whichever channel's easiest. To life we're all the same like fingers on a single hand. If you were reaching to pick something up, and one hand was full, you'd use the other without even thinking. It's that way with life; if one of us is busy or pre-occupied, the energy will omve in through a stranger, a distant relative, or even an insurance agency. Life's not prejudiced or partial.
The instant we step out of ego, we are welcome to experience the constant flow."
-DAVID CATES

A nice, heartwarming book.

Nice touches with a true story for the reader

who can dream again.

I like the style of writing.

Unique and exotic concepts.

David, if you're reading this please send me

your newest book!LOL

One may imagine learning about unconditional unlimited love

and money with this one!

Utterly Orgasmic!
Utterly phenomenal book! A truly enlightening and thrilling ride to the heart of all levels of prosperity. Cates covers every aspect of the source of abundance! What a revelation and a truly unforgetable gift! You should by two, make that 3 or 4 or 5... to give to every one you know, from grandmother to sister in law! A great gift for newlyweds or business start-ups or yourself! I thank the author for so brilliantly and deeply sharing an amazing story the journey to wealth!

finding out where you are on 'The Path of Money'
This is the latest book I've read on prosperity consciousness, and I highly recommend it. It's the true life story of the author, a spiritual seeker, and his experiences on 'The Path of Money'.

This book is for everyone, but especially those seeking to be self-employed. There is much information here on developing and living 'Prosperity Consciousness'. The author recounts his journey and each of his revelations along the way up until the time he actually published this book, in an entertaining style. In the second half of the book he includes his actual journal entries from the time. The combination of information and emotional content is enough to begin processing you on your own prosperity issues in a powerful way.

So much of what he writes about, confirmed my personal experience with money and prosperity, and then hit me in present time, (right where I was at at that time!!). This book has helped me to very quickly move through some of my own blockages and on to my next step in creating my own prosperity. You will want to read this book more than once!

Christian N. Chabot's Understanding the Euro is a well-rounded guide to the world's newest currency--whether you're planning to do business in Europe or just visit. Written in an easy-to-read question-and-answer format, the book shows how the euro is transforming Europe into a global economic powerhouse. Chabot writes, "This monetary revolution creates the second largest economic bloc in the world, a single market of almost 300 million people, a drastically changed European business environment and the first potential challenge to the supremacy of the US dollar." Chabot gives a concise history of the idea, which stems from Winston Churchill's call for a united European nation in 1946. He also looks at the risks and opportunities that the euro presents to both managers and investors and includes helpful charts that neatly summarize Euroland's 11 economies. --Dan Ring

A fast and easy Euro primer
I bought this baby as the background for an advanced level international econ paper on the fluctuations of the Euro, and it is wicked good. It hands out the basic knowledge like the Rams hand out touchdown balls, and even though it was written before the Euro's current problems, you can easily piece together the reasons behind the malaise.

The only caveat is that if you're really into the mathematical and graphical side of economics -- this puppy ain't for you. If you look at the overload of math that Krugman's International Economics textbook gives you, this pales in comparison. I wish it had more of that, if only so that on those nights I can't sleep, I have one more resource to use. But that's what I have my girlfriend's stories for.

Anyway, go buy it. It's good.

If you want to learn about the Euro, this is the book to get
I have read 2 other books about the Euro and this one is by far the best. It offers an unbiased view of the Euro unlike most other books. It is very easy to read, informative, well organized... I could go on and on. If you want to learn about the Euro if you are a student or businessman, get this book.

Excellent, non-national centric, easy to read
This is an excellent introductory book. It is very easy to read and is very concise. It is written from a general rather than a particualar nationalist view as are several other books on the EURO. It also has a large listing of web sites where other interesting information is available.

This book has great information.
This book has great information in areas of how to manage the kids, the job, and keep your sanity. What I enjoyed about this book was that it mixed research as well as prepares you with a bit of real life situations you might stumble across.

"The Girlfriends Guide to Working at Home"
As a newbie to the WAHM world, I really enjoyed this book and found it helpful and encouraging. Cheryl has such a great sense of humor - I loved all of the analogies she uses throughout the book and the stories she shares about her kids, who are pretty funny, too. She reassures you that being home with your kids really is worth it - whether you are stressed out or haven't seen the light of day in weeks. After reading this book I finally felt excited and motivated about being a WAHM instead of nervous and scared. Thanks, Cheryl, for the inspiration!

Informative and funny
As a non-US citizen there was information which didn't apply to me, but still Cheryl Demas book has been a great inspiration for me in trying to figure out how to start a home based business for myself. It's fun, personal and covers a large number of areas. Reading this + other books on the same subject such as "Mompreneurs" has given me a good understanding of what it will take to "set up shop".
