A warning to potential students
I too have found that this book is full of 'issues' that make learning ODEs not only a chore, but next to impossible. The problems presented in the book make little sense to anyone except for the profs. If you are planning on teaching an ODE course with this book, I beg you to reconsider your choice of books for the sake of your students.

This book is a liability for universities
This book is undeniably the worst math book I have ever used. While the authors and student editors are undoubtedly more comfortable with the subject matter and are intelligent people, I found the text to be uncomprehensible by people that didn't already understand the material.

If you are a student in an ODE course, I would recommend using another text. You may sleep better.

Best differential equations book I've used!
This book's clear writing style, fantastic use of illustrations and examples, and good chapter organization make it the best differential equations book I've used.

I can understand a first time student might have problems with this book. The text isn't perfect. It requires a professor to help guide the student along. But one shouldn't expect to learn a rich and demanding subject like differential equations alone.

Rhino NURBS 3D Modeling

Rhino NURBS 3D Modeling is an excellent book not only on building models with this popular modeling tool but on computer modeling in general. Many of the techniques described here, such as Boolean operations and trimming surfaces, can be applied to building models in other programs.

Many chapters adeptly demonstrate Rhino's power as a NURBS modeler (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines). NURBS is a computer modeling paradigm that makes it easy to build curved surfaces and organic shapes. Certain chapters go into detail on building shapes such as a dragonfly (based on a photographic template), a coffeepot with a lid, and a cartoon-style boy character.

The most interesting chapter covers the process of modeling a human face based on a plaster casting, and it offers numerous photos documenting the process of creating the plaster mold from someone's face, filling it to get the cast, and digitizing it into Rhino using a digitizing scribe.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains all the models discussed in the book, plus a quasi-demo version of Rhino that has all features enabled. ("Quasi" because saving things from the program becomes disabled after the 15th time.) Rhino NURBS 3D Modeling works well for new Rhino users and for artists new to computer modeling interested in learning how a dedicated NURBS modeler works. --Mike Caputo

dont buy this
This book is a joke, it shows hundreds of pages of worthless technical information with no reference to any practical modeling. Margaret should read 3d studio workshop by Duane Loose to see how a tutorial should be written. Save your cash.

Unable to use Rhino because of this book.
The title to this review says it all. I basically have had to "teach" myself in order to learn ANYTHING in Rhino. This book (which I recieved as a gift, THANK GOODNESS because if I had paid for it I would have felt the hole in my wallet) starts out ok in the first few chapters but then falls short dramatically of the intended goal. Later on it crudely shows you how to create a poorly designed figure of a boy and a skateboard that's laughably nothing more than just basic shapes slapped together. As for the section on creating a detailed human face/head from a plaster caste, let's be real here - HOW many people actually a)own a Microscribe digitizing tool at home, and b)have the time to smother a friend in Plaster to create a caste for digitizing a face? If this book had been set up properly it would have taught people how to create the face straight in Rhino with Nurbs or whatever else (again I'm lacking the proper terminology since this book has failed to even teach me THAT, so forgive me if I use the wrong terms) like other books teach people in HALF the time it would take to go through the digitizing process which seems more awkward than anything else.

Now I'm giving this book 2 stars but again it's merely because it DID help me get a knowledge of what the tools where for in the tool bars - but rest assured that's NOTHING you couldn't get from the Manuals. In short: The manuals which are vague to begin with (to this DAY I've yet to find someone who can admit to knowing how to apply the UV coordinates and texture map an object in Rhino entirely - and I've even asked this of the PRO's in the forums with no answer) are BETTER than this book and that's not saying much in it's defense.

Sorry to the author but this should have been written better instead of rushed to market. Now if we can get a RHINO BIBLE from the people that brought us the 3DS Max 4 bible...now ya talking!! :)

Rhino 3D: the best manual
I think that this book was great help for any beginner. I started with previous of Autocad and 3D Studio Max, so this book was easy to learn from. Easy to follow tutorials helped as well as an understanding of basic design. This book functions twofold as manual and tutorial. To those that wrote reviews saying it was difficult, like anything else in life understanding and knowledge doesn't fall in you laps. Trust me, only a fool with no patience couldn't understand this book. EASY. I look forward to a second edition that deals with more advanced modelling techniques and features of this great program.

Don't waste your money. False advertising.
Please pocket your money. Don't shell it out on this book. This book is ALL about using the extrude feature in your 3D program. Extrude this, extrude that. It's tutorials are also VERY unclear and leave you hanging in the dark with unanswered questions. It uses awful, uninspiring art for sample work throughout the tutorials. You're better off learning on your own, experimenting with the controls and what not. What a "lie" . The title is very misleading. I am never buying anything from that publishing company ever again.

not good for learning low poly modeling
This book has to many vague descrpitions that will leave the reader referencing every other reading material they own in order to figure out what the authors are talking about. The picture which the authors tell you to reference in the book are small images in black and white, which are impossilbe to make out, I bought this book used and I wanted to return it. These aurthors tell the readers to reference models which are clearly not the original model they started working with as an easy way for the authors to move on, while the reader is left scratch their heads because what they have doesn't match with the authors, Any one learning modeling aviod this book, it will only fustrate you, save your money for something else.

If your a beginner ...go ahead.
The book will show you enough to know how to make a model and UV map the thing and to be honest when your new and want to get into modding games or somthing thats all you care about however in a way I agree with the ones that were unhappy with this book in regards to the fact that you do the same thing over and over but when your new thats all you do anyways so if you want to get your feet wet and "have the EXTRA money" go ahead and buy the thing it will teach somthing you didn't know.MAYBE:) Everyone has to start somewhere!!!!

Inside 3D Studio MAX 2, Volume 2: Modeling & Materials

The second volume of the most authoritative guide to 3D Studio MAX 2, this guide focuses on the best ways to create sophisticated models and materials. The first part of the book is about modeling and teaches you basic modeling concepts such as polygonal, patch, and Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) modeling, and how to work with curves and primitives. Next you learn how to create models for architectural, industrial, and mechanical design purposes. The authors also discuss how to model for real-time games, virtual reality, and the Web, and how to create high-detail, cinematic output and realistic character models. The second part of the book is about materials: you learn about the types of shaders, reflection and refraction concepts, ray tracing, and rendering, and then move on to design naturally occurring, man-made, fictional, special-effects, and animated materials. You also use the program for creating 2-D maps, which is helpful if you don't have an image editor. The third part of the book guides you through rendering effects, teaching you how to work with cameras, lights, glows, lens flares, highlights, and focal effects.

The intelligently organized guide features tutorials with step-by-step instructions as well as technical discussions and large, clear screen shots. The included CD-ROM has project files for the tutorials. There's also a full-color gallery of interesting models and scenes produced in 3D Studio Max, an appendix that teaches you about importing AutoCAD files into 3D Studio MAX 2, and another appendix that provides an overview of useful 3D Studio MAX plug-ins. --Kathleen Caster

The publisher, authors and editors should be ashamed.
It doesn't appear anyone took time to review the book before publication. It has incomplete lessons, the wrong illustration with the wrong lesson, it lacks continuity, etc., etc...

Evidently the positive reviewers for this book never used it.

Lots of errors...
Sorry, but I can't recommend this book. I love Vol.1 of this series, but this one is full of errors. There are several errors in the tutorial descriptions, which make the step by step instructions for max beginners a pain. Of course if you have some more experience with max, you will spot these errors easily. The worst thing of this book is the CD. There are a lot of projects with wrong links to bitmaps. For most of the projects you can recreate the missing links, because the bitmaps are somewhere on the CD (or your harddisk). But there are also tutorials on the CD (e.g. the fender of the car) which you can't execute because of missing bitmaps. This book is not worth the money you have to pay.

...of course just my 2 cents.

A wealth of information ruined by errata
The authors are very knowledgeable and cover lots of ground, with the emphasis more on materials than modeling. NURBS once more gets short thrift (will no one give it an in-depth treatment?), focusing on the simple creation of lofts, lathes, etc., with few insights into how to work details into these objects once created. The book is riddled with typos, missing steps, erroneous figures or files, etc. The publisher's Web site provides tech-support for this and other books, and through them I received an errata file written by one of the authors. While this is of some use, it barely scratches the surface of what is wrong with this book, and the errata itself contains many mistakes. It was reckless and unprofessional of the authors to hand in so many untested examples, ditto of the publisher in not performing a proper copy-edit, and ditto again for both to foist the mess on unsuspecting customers. If they team up again for a book on the newly-released 3D Studio MAX 3, check for reviews before buying, and it might not be a bad idea to contact the publisher and ask what steps they have taken to avoid the mistakes made here.

Database-SQL-Rdbms Howto: Postgresql Object Relational Database System

Read the Intro and decide for yourself
All you need to do to evaluate how wonderful this book is is to read the introductory section entitled "Laws of Physics Apply to Software."

A web search based on that phrase should find you the same elsewhere on the web; most if not all of the material in this book has assortedly been presented under such titles as a "Linux Database HOWTO" or "PostgreSQL HOWTO." (Originally it was called the "Database HOWTO"; people objected because there are other databases on Linux than just PostgreSQL, and the HOWTO is basically a "cheering session for PostgreSQL.)

It is still mirrored, here and there; the Linux Documentation Project indicates that the PostgreSQL HOWTO has been "removed for review," which is rather suggestive of the quality of the material...

Deserves 0 Stars
It is amazing what gets into print. This is a Bad Book. It is full of insane rants and inaccurate statements. There are good books on PosgtreSQL. PLEASE go buy one of them and not this.

I suspect the first two reviews are actually by Al Dev.

Excellent
I have read this book, and found it is quite useful for SQL. I would recommend to anyone!!

Quantitative Modeling of Derivative Securities: From Theory To Practice

Avellaneda's worse performance
This is a surprisingly sloppy book written by a known academic in the financial engineering world. That is Marco Avellaneda. At first sight, this book is a good idea. It is suppose to bridge the gap between literature that are too simplified for quants and the high level books that are too mathematically rigorous for pratitioners. However this book is presented in such a sloopy manner that any profit driven company would sack these two authors. There are typo mistakes in almost every page and some fundamental errors. There are numerical examples there are completely wrong. On top of that, who writes a quant book without giving any exercises. The authors should comprehend that mistakes in quantitative books can be very misleading to the reader especially if the reader is trying to learn. If you don't have a Ph.D. in Math, don't read this book. It might do more harm than good.

A useful introduction to modeling of derivatives
This book is written by the two well-known applied mathematicians - Marco Avellaneda of the Courant Institute and Peter Laurence of the University of Rome. Avellaneda has been involved in financial mathematics for a number of years, while Laurence's interest in this subject is more recent. The book can serve as a useful introduction to the quantitative analysis in financial markets. As such, it covers a lot of ground stretching from an exposition of the standard Black-Scholes theory to an interesting description of the HJM framework. In addition to the standard material, it contains several original results developed by the authors themselves. The first printing had so many typos that its study was difficult for a novice. Most of these typos had been corrected in the second printing. In its present form, the book can be strongly recommended to a general reader with interest in the mathematical finance.

Very good treatment of mathematical finance minus the typos
This book is no doubt written in haste and typos are galore. I have read this book in its entirety and I highly recommend it. Concepts well covered include Binomial trees, Brownian motion and stochastic calculus, APT, HJM formulation, etc. It is a great stepping stone to get to Duffy's book. A second edition would be a great idea.

Not Useful
This book was purchased during the execution of an MQSeries project. It was opened once, put down and never referred to again. Perhaps as an introduction to those who have no background in queuing or distributed processing it would be helpful.

If you are a developer do not buy this book
This book is for managers that want to have some understanding of MQSeries. It just covers some old use cases. I am a Java programmer and I was looking for some inside to MQSeries, patterns, etc. No in this book. I did not even finnished the first chapter. I browse to the book and I quickly realized that it was not for me. I made my manager happy by making a present. Now it is being display at his desk. I gave it 3 starts because it might have a used for some people and there is really not too many good books on the subject.

it is made for a dummy like me
I am a little manager. I micro-manage a technical group by reading books such as this one. It is great because I can now use all the buzz word I learned from this book to kiss up the upper management. Moreover, I can also intimidate people under me everyday with what I read from here! Yes, I do! If you want to be like me, buy this book!

A great project that wasn't finished
I have spent a lot of time studying this book. The early chapters are the best. The book needs work. It has a lot of valuable information, especially for a programming student who does not have much database experience. Unfortunately, it has a few glaring errors and omissions. The book has graphics that are labeled wrong. It refers to files on the accompanying CD that do not exist. I couldn't find an errata page on the Internet for the book. If the book were taken through a very serious editing process and re-published as a second edition, I might buy the new version.
However, the quality of the writing, the overall poor quality of the binding, and the annoyances of being mis-directed make this book a poor comparison to "Delphi 4 Unleashed" and the Tomes of Delphi "Algorithms and Data Structures." Buy this book, only if you gave up trying to read database chapters in the Delphi 4 Unleashed. Also, be prepared to make a few mental jumps when you try to follow the projects.

This book is great
Contrary to the opinions of most of the other people who have written reviews on this book, I thought it was great. I have been developing applications in C++Builder for about a year or so (and in Delphi for a few years before that), but never had to do anything too complicated with databases. I especially found Part II of the book extremely valueable and easy to understand.

Even though this is a Delphi book it was invaluable to me in completing a C++Builder database application that I was required to write.

In my opinion, if you aren't advanced enough to know how to do database programming in Delphi (or C++Builder), but would like to be, this book is for you. If you are already an accomplished database programmer, then you probably wouldn't look for a book like this in the first place.

Good Book For Beginners
Do not buy this book if you are looking for a book on advanced Delphi development, this is for beginners only. If you are a beginner and want a comprehesive introduction to Delphi Database development then this book is for you.

this book
this book is alright but the thing that i hated was that it says "go to snap settings" and it took me over 20 minutes to find it. It doesn't tell you where to find stuff. It took me over 2 hours to do some projects because i was exploring to find settings and boxes i had to check. dont buy it.

Poorly written
I was extremely disappointed by this book (I borrowed it, thank God). It is sparse on several subjects, exercises lacks answers and the book is in general poorly written. Besides that, the book is a merge of two books and the integration of these books should never have been attempted.

You may go to the book's home page and download a couple of chapters for free and decide for yourself.

Sorry, I cannot possibly recommend this book.

Another LONG-WINDED book.
This book is filled with copious repetition (see chapter one alone). Some concepts are not well presented. Explanations are too often compromised by awkward English usage. Wish the authors understand that a thick book does not make it a good one. Concise books are just what we need today.

Very nice book if used as a textbook
Very nice writen for new learners while covers enough aspects to step further. Long because it is from the merging of another 2 books. Recommended as a handbook for new commers to database area.
