Take it off the shelf
This book is out of date. It is for an earlier version of pcAnywhere, version 9, not the current version 10.

PcAnywhere For Dummies
Book is outdated and is not compatible with the latest version (10.0 - 10.5). It is also limited to dial up connections and contains very little on connecting via internet.

pcAnywhere for Dummies
I found this book to be extremely helpful in setting up and running the software. The guidance offered is clear, simple and straight-forward, and helped me get through problem several areas in using the software. Definitely a recommended purchase in the Dummies series if you use this prgram!

Not a good buy
We used this book for our graduate level course and the instructor(author) asked us to read the book. But there are
a lot of topics not well illustrated and explained. Some ideas
are confusing or totally wrong.
No need to mention so many typos. Chap 6 and Chap 7 are among the worst.
Probably try another one "Database Mgmt Systems" by a UW Madison Professor. That one would be a lot better.

Almost complete. Very good.
Very interesting, well written reading. The main problem is completeness: although some new topics are covered, other, more traditional, but fundamental, are not. One simple example: triggers.

Very Satisfied
Clear. Concise. Organized. Complete. Instructive

Outdated and of little value
I found this book somewhat outdated. Even though it was well-written if was of little value. There are several other books of better quality.

Introduction to Groundwater Modeling
I found this text very valuable in explaining the differences between these two methods and how each handles the dependent variable (head) and its first derivative (flow). The text also discusses Laplaces equation, iterative methods including Gauss-Seidel/SOR. Chapters are dedicated to finite difference and finite element methods under steady-state and transient conditions. It also demonstrates how each element is handled separately using finite element method and then the equations are assembled into a conductance matrix.

This text is a very good complement to other modeling texts. However, if you want to learn how to set up your hydrogeologic conceptual model, what data is needed to develop a good model, how to choose your numerical model, verify, calibrate your model, interpret results and perform a post audit, this is not that text. For the purpose of model setup etc. I would recommend Applied Groundwater Modeling.

Highly recommended
I've used this book in two of my groundwater modeling classes. Despite the fact that it is a little outdated, it has the clearest explaination I've come across of the mathematics behind groundwater modeling. In addition, it contains very good example problems.

Sign of a steady decline
I purchased this book in order to solidify my experience of ISA server after 2 years building firewalls with the product, with an aim of taking the 70-227 exam at the end. As I began to read the book, I realised that a lot of the content was far too basic to really get into the nuts and bolts of ISA. Each exam topic is skirted over in such a way as to not genuinely explain how ISA works. This may be acceptable to scrape through the exam but won't prepare you for using ISA in the real world. The book is full of typos, and some of it - particularly the interrelationships between protocol rules and packet filters - is plain confused.

The chapter assessments have exhibits which aren't clear enough to answer the questions without taking a leap of faith, and some of the answers are ambiguous at best (like leaving the word "deny" out of "deny packet filter"). This is not very helpful to people who are novices with the product.

If you are hoping to use the CD to cement your knowledge, forget it. While the questions may well be valid, they are poorly presented and the questions and answers wrap off the screen on some systems. Mine even told me I was doing an Exchange exam at one stage. This is simply not what you expect from a major publisher - if you're going to include this quality of material, you shouldn't bother bundling it at all.

If you bought this book already, consider getting a transcender test to test and rebuild your knowledge, and play with an ISA server - the online help contains a wealth of information about it. Also be aware the book went to press before FP1 was released, so there is nothing about the OWA publishing wizard.

This will probably be the last Sybex book I buy. I have been unimpressed by several of their titles now - so I'll be sticking to the genuine Microsoft material in future!

Very poor software!!
Although the book was in a good presentation style, unfortunately the testing software that comes with it is very disappointing, not user friendly in the least, invisible answers, answers that can't be seen because of the exhibit buttons.
If you don't need the software then the book is OK, but if you are relying on the software for the exam prep questions then forget it!!

Well organized, comprehensive and must buy for 70-227 exam
Thanks to William Heldman and Sybex, this book is all you need to pass ISA 2000 server exam with a good score. I used this book alongside Cert21.com ISA server 2000 exam to study the product and exam objectives very well, and passed the real exam from the first try. Comprehensive, well written and organized with all exam objectives and more. I suggest you install ISA server serveral times and configure it for different senarious. The companion CD includes good exam questions to help you study for the exam. As usual, Sybex is the best resource to use for any future exam preparation guides.

Understanding the New SQL: A Complete Guide

Has its good points, but look for something better.
Given the first author's position as editor of the SQL92 standard and the association with Jim Gray, this book has been a surprising disappointment. The back cover of my edition describes it as "a valuable reference", states that it will "clarify the differences between SQL89 and SQL92", and targets it to both newcomers to SQL and experienced programmers. On the positive side, it is attractively typeset, the paragraphs individually are readable, and the railroad-track syntax diagrams are attractive. Taken as a whole however, "Understanding the new SQL" falls down.

As a reference, it frustrates. A good reference needs a good index, but the attractive railroad-track diagrams are not set off from other entries in the index, greatly slowing searches. And while there is a complete grammar for SQL92 in an appendix, its organization defies use as a reference.

The index is generally inadequate as well. For example, most operator char! acters are not indexed at all, and the word "operators" only indexes a peripheral subject. I have yet to determine the stance of the standard on case-sensitivity.

Comparison with SQL89 appears only occasionally in the body of the book. Most of it is in a laundry list in an appendix and not useful for reference. The discussion is sometimes less than rigorous or uncritical, for example dismissing the implementation-defined precision of INTEGER in a single sentence. As another example, only in the discussion of LIKE is treatment of trailing blanks by the related '=' operator discussed. The book is organized generally by language features and syntax, and is not as strong in moving from problem to solution.

Let's wait for the second edition
I confess I was a bit disappointed with the book. I hope its second edition will be more 'Complete' than the first one. 'An Introduction to SQL' would be a more appropriate title.

A very useful source of information
This is a very useful book, and every professional user of SQL should read it. The authors demonstrate a clear understanding of the subject matter, and their writing style, with good examples, down-to-earth explanations, and the occasional touch of humor, is simply enjoyable. A particularly helpful feature of this book, is that syntax is shown in easy-to-read railroad diagrams.

It would have been helpful if the index was organized in such a way that one could immediately locate the railroad diagram for a given SQL statement. A separate list of railroad diagrams would also be nice. And although I consider heavy reliance on defaults to be bad programming practice, I would have appreciated it if just a quick look at a railroad diagram told me what defaults, if any, applied for the statement in question.

Any author of books or articles must have his or her target audience in mind. For example, what may be an excellent article for a trade magazine, would almost certainly be rejected by a scientific journal. Thus, when judging this book one must keep in mind the perspective of its authors. If you are looking for an academic textbook with emphasis on scientific rigor, then this book will disappoint you. It is pretty obvious that is not what this book was meant to be. If, on the other hand, you want a practically oriented book that will help you do your job in a better way, then this is a great place to start.

Having worked with databases and related technologies for 18 years, I have seen so many books where the number of pages outweigh the knowledge of their authors by a factor of 2 or more (and just in case there are any publishers out there listening; computer professionals are sick and tired of having to read through hundreds of pages of blah-blah-blah in order to find the information we are looking for). This book is different. It contains 394 pages of ordinary chapters, followed by 133 pages of appendices, and the signal-to-noise ratio in all these pages is excellent.

If you are an application programer, a database administrator, or some other kind of database practitioner, and you are serious about your work, then there are some books I would consider more or less mandatory reading. This is one of them.

Poor Publication
The potential informative content of this book is destroyed by the poor execution of the printed publication. This book which you would expect to be very visually oriented has the majority of its photos so blurred and grainy that they are almost useless. It looks like it was published in someone's basement on an old copy machine. Don't waste your money buying this book.

a bit of a gem
This book is somewhat cheaply published, the photographs are black and white and low res but the tutorials and interviews are great. My first sculpey head based on the tutorial came out very well and I have no other sculpture training. Great advice on working with Sculpey and there are very few other books like it out there. I hope eventually they can do a second edition thats bigger and has better photos. I'd love to take a class from the author.

Disappointment
Disappointment

I will begin in that: If the book did not have the third part of
Dr. Schmidt, that book would be rated *zero* stars !!!
The following sentences are concerned to the first and second part
of the book:
Patterns ??? I disagree ! Describing a *very* general problem and
telling something like "Try to do it better", is not helping at all !
Maybe the material is immature, or just written very bad.
Not organized at all. I couldn't tell what the... the writer wanted
to explain ! many of the details not interesting simply because there are
not attached to any subject of the specific chapter. It was like reading
a student work (student that miss all the classes).

The third paragraph is very good. You cannot miss a good article of
Dr. Schmidt (The father of ACE).The articles are an
updated version of Dr. Schmidt web-site-articles (The problem was that I have already read all most of his articles before ...).

Conclusion: Take the money and run.

Long overdue - excellent resource
This book is divided into small- and large-collections of design patterns, and experience reports, all of which comprise an important body of work supporting one of the most demanding development environments. The patterns that I found most valuable, as well as most applicable to any communications-based architecture are: fault-tolerant telecommunications system patterns (the frameworks that can be mined from the patterns can be tailored to just about any kind of system), and call processing patterns (again, these are applicable to systems outside of the telecommunications domain because they distill complex interrelationships, events and processing requirements into coherent patterns that can be employed in systems that are equal in scope and complexity), and patterns for logging diagnostic messages. In addition, the experience reports in Part III are incredibly valuable to any developer or development organization because they give insight into some of the most challenging problem/solution sets and lessons learned that you're likely to encounter. My favorites are: managing change with patterns, OpenWebserver, and applying design patterns to flexible configure network services in distributed systems. Given the movement towards M-Commerce, extending the enterprise applications suites to PDAs and web-enabled phones, the design patterns will have direct- and indirect-applicability to organizations developing for these environments. Of course, in the telecommunications industry these patterns are directly applicable across the board. This is an important work that provides the collective knowledge and experience of some of the telecommunication industry's best and brightest. For the intended audience and the secondary audiences that I cited this book is one of the most valuable resources a development organization can acquire.
