The extremely good introduction book worth the $195.00 price
An extremely good introduction book for student and beginner professionals, like the book review said, it blend the actual case with the theory gracefully. I only hope if it can attached the simulink programs with the book like some authors did.

Understanding the .NET Framework

Suitable for most any .NET developer or IT professional who works with Windows, Understanding the .NET Framework largely cuts through the marketing hype and confusion to explain what Microsoft's new .NET platform really is and what it means for the future of software development.

While many titles on .NET succumb to cheerleading for Microsoft's newest platform, this book largely avoids this, instead presenting a worthwhile perspective on what .NET means for IT professionals, including a notably fair-minded comparison with Java, arguably the established player in enterprise computing today.

The book examines essential features of .NET (including its built-in run-time virtual machine, a rich array of standard APIs, and garbage collection). Sample code drawn from C# is supplemented with Visual Basic .NET (and several other languages) to give a broad comparison of the support for multilanguage programming available on this platform.

A real strength of this text is the overview of what .NET means for both "traditional" applications and Web development. (The team of authors argue that "thick clients" are not at all dead, and they explore Windows Forms for building standalone applications.) There's plenty of coverage of Web-based applications, too, including a solid tour of ASP.NET and its advantages over the earlier ASP standard for performance and code maintainability. Sections on the new ADO.NET explore new ways to access data beyond relational databases, including built-in XML support.

As it winds down, this text zeros in on Web services from top to bottom (including a solid explanation of SOAP and other relevant standards), plus how Web services are implemented in .NET. Better yet, the authors offer their perspective on the future of software development based on the Web service model.

Overall, Understanding the .NET Framework can be read profitably by both hands-on developers and IT managers (and anyone else in the enterprise who must come to grips with .NET). This often tough-minded and smart look offers plenty of nuts-and-bolts information on the .NET platform, as well as a wider perspective on the future of software built with Microsoft's latest technology. --Richard Dragan

Solid introduction to .NET concepts.
This is a good book. As usual for Wrox titles, there are numerous misspellings and the editing is a bit sloppy. Also, the nature of Wrox books with their multiple authors lends to a somewhat inconsistent flow from chapter to chapter. However, these traits of Wrox books can be forgiven for the solid content "Understanding the .NET Framework" provides.

The book provides a breakdown of the major .NET topics including Web forms, Windows Forms, Data access, COM integration and Web services. Each of these topics is covered in its own chapter with helpful examples to illustrate the points covered. I found myself coding each of the examples in Visual Studio.NET and learning from each of them.

The examples are mostly complete, though the biggest challenge I had was getting the "Remoting" example in Chapter 6 to work. This was because of the need to associate a strong name with the assembly as well as register the assemnbly with the "sn" and "regsvcs" utilities. These required steps weren't obvious to me at first and weren't documented. Also, the authors state the examples could be built without VS.NET. In theory this is true, but impractical because of the associated files VS.NET creates on your behalf in projects.

Some of the highlights include the COM/.NET integration example, the Web Services example, the data type information from Chapter 2 and the excellent breakdown of the WDSL XML format in Chapter 7.

This book is not as high-level as some people might expect from the title. While "Understanding the .NET Framework" is an overview, it is still quite technical. Overall I found the book to be a great value for the purchase price.

A Great door stop that covers all the essentials.
I've referenced the book many times, including the 6 other books included on the CD-Rom in HTML format, which is very easy to carry around. It helped our I.T department setup all of the Microsoft BackOffice products from the ground up. We've used it as a reference point for most "How Do I..." questions. A very usefull reference and guide.

A teaching workbook with usable applications
Finally, here is a workbook on a complex subject with usable introductory software on a CD ROM. The workbook takes one through the necessary steps to set up a water body problem. After doing this, I felt confident enough to try a real water body application. For the latter it would have been useful to have a listing of some common data base sources. With the application set up I kept trying more and more complex problem including the complete water quality modeling.

There are some limitations as with any workbook. It would have been useful if the different water quality model input parameter tables were discussed at the beginning of their application chapters. Also, it would have been useful if there was a more extensive GUI, however, having all the input data in a simple tabular format is still useful.

The feature of putting the set-up and applications up front with the theory chapters at the end, rather than mixing them together is very helpful.

I will be recommending that this workbook be used in a senior level environmental sciences course for which I am trying to get more of a quantitative underpinning.

A good book for new models.
I have worked as a model for 7 years, in different parts of the world. So I have knowledge of the business. Why do I have this book? Well, the book was given to me as a present.

This book will be good for "new faces (a term used to describe a model who is just beginning)".

And Natasha covers everything there is to cover, -as usual.

The reason I only give it 4 stars, is that sometimes in order to understand an explanation, you will have to look up another word.

Covers all of the basics
I really like this book. It is extremely easy to read and is great for someone who knows nothing. It familarises you with modeling terms and gives you some idea of what to expect. I'm not sure how this compares to other books or the child modeling experience itself though and I did still have some remaining questions after finishing the book.

Very good source, but 1995 puts it a bit out of date.
Brings up some very good and relevant topics, but with a 1995 publish date, it is out of date. This is especially true with Windows 95 Client. It would be nice to see a newer version, but probably not likely with W98 coming out.

Vast commercial potential in this field
The field of wireless personal communications is experiencing rapid growth worldwide. Most clearly seen in the huge uptake of cellphones in Europe, Japan and, to a lesser extent, the United States and China. Plus, WiFi has taken off strongly in the developed world, with enhanced 802.11 standards being quickly solidified and adopted.

This volume, as of its writing in 2000, describes much of the engineering and theoretical underpinning of this field. It does not have the 802.11 standards that came out after 2000, but much of the book is still very germane. There is no lack of research interest in this field, driven in no small part by the anticipation that nomadic computer and the rise of the pervasive Web have yet to occur. Still early days for those, we hope.

The field contains tough issues, as may be seen in several papers in the book. In earlier decades, wireless communications were often to and from antennas at fixed locations, with ample power. Or, if the antennas were mobile, like on planes, usually power was not a consideration. Nor the possible maximum length of the antennas. But in modern personal mobile uses, the constraints are far tighter. Power must be minimized, and you cannot draw out a one meter antenna.

Which gives great potential for researchers like yourself to invent and commercialise new applications, if you can overcome these challenges, aided perhaps by ideas in this book!

bible of dispersion
I am reading 1969 version of this book. I have borrowed this book from a Professor. It is a good stariting point for the formulation basics in dispersion. Up to now I had seen the names of Gaussian type, had never faced with the formulations. Thanks to Bruce Turner
